CINCINNATI, OH –- Newt Gingrich today tried to link Mitt Romney and Barack Obama as one in the same when it comes to their stances on birth control for religious institutions.
“Romneycare and Obamacare they're too similar,” Gingrich told the crowd inside Price Hill Chili Restaurant at his first campaign event in the Buckeye State this morning. “There's been a lot of talk about the Obama administration's attack on the Catholic Church. Well the fact is, Gov. Romney insisted that Catholic hospitals give out abortion pills against their religious belief when he was governor.”
Gingrich was referring to a Feb. 3 Boston Globe article, which reported that Romney -- in Dec. 2005 -- "required all Massachusetts hospitals, including Catholic ones, to provide emergency contraception to rape victims, even though some Catholics view the morning-after pill as a form of abortion."
More from the article: "[Romney] said he was acting on his legal counsel’s interpretation of a new state law - one passed by lawmakers despite his veto - but he also said that 'in his heart of hearts,’ he believed that rape victims should have access to emergency contraception."
Since Jan. 30, Gingrich has relentlessly criticized the Obama administration for including a provision in the health-care law that requires all religious institutions to cover birth control in their insurance plans, despite religious teachings.
“The Obama administration is engaged in a war against religion,” the former House Speaker, who converted to Catholicism, told supporters at a rally in Jacksonville, FL two weeks ago after hearing the letter sent by Catholic Bishops to churches read at mass. “Their decision last week that they would impose on every Catholic institution, every Jewish institution, every Protestant institution, the Obamacare standard of what you have to buy as insurance. It is a direct violation of freedom of religion and an example of the increasingly dictatorial attitude of this administration.”
Yesterday in Colorado, Romney jumped in the battle, calling the Obama administration’s coverage for contraception a "violation of conscience” and has written in the past that he "stands with" the Catholic Bishop’s opposed to the mandate in the health care law.
But today, Gingrich argued that when Romney was governor, he made religious institutions cover birth control as well.
“Over and over, you get the same pattern. And I think that a Massachusetts moderate finds it very hard to draw a sharp contrast with somebody who is an Illinois radical," Gingrich told the 150 person crowd in the Buckeye State.

Love watching folks tear each other apart to prove who's holier than who. Newt has found new religion after descrating his marriage vows more than once and Romney baptized his dead athiest father-in-law w/out regard for the man's religion or lack thereof. Jumpin on the relgious bandwagon to get votes. Shameless, feckless hacks. This from party that went around rumoring that Obama was a muslim. Some people still believe that crap.
Honestly, who "converts" to Catholicism?! What, the protestant version was lacking in pomp and spectacle? Or was Confession a safer bet for forgiveness than an ambiguous "acceptance of Christ as Savior"? As a liberal atheist, I dont pretend to understand ANY of it, but...Catholicism? by CHOICE? REALLY??!
When you turn to hate and fear, you turn away from what Jesus taught.
Reality bites--back in the early 60's, my dad worked with a woman who was a devout Catholic (she went to mass EVERY morning!) and with a man who, on being diagnosed with a cancer that would mean not only a long painful death, but would also wipe out all his and his wife's financial resources, leaving her destitute.
So the guy went to his car, ran a hose to the exhaust and then taped it to the back window, took an overdose of pain pills, turned on the car, and put a bullet in his brain. (he wanted to make SURE.)
and the good Catholic woman's response? "too bad he left a suicide note, because if he hadn't, they could have ruled his death an accident, and he could still have been buried in holy ground."
IF suicide was such a mortal sin, did she think GOD wouldn't see through that?
Of course, the Catholic church has gotten around that now: IF a Catholic person knows that committing suicide is a mortal sin, which would cause them to go to He11, then only a crazy person would willingly do that--and since a suicide committer is crazy, they aren't responsible for their own actions, and can still be buried in holy ground.
Wonder if that works for murderers, too?
By the way a recent poll has over 50 percent of catholics supporting the law. I've known plenty of Catholic women who were on the pill. An institution run by celibate men who don't actually have to personal deal w/ the issues of pregnancy or sex are a wee bit out of touch. Firing medical staff for saving a mother 1st is a bit weird when it was OK to move pedophile priests from parish to parish leaving them to victimize the children they hold in such dear esteem to live on this earth.
Gingrich is such a master of women's issues, of course. Romney is a master of nothing but changing his story depending on what he believes people want to hear. Apparently people want to be patronized, lied to, and held in contempt. His first concern after entering a room is to get out his hand sanitizer. His wife is there to remind him not to dis the peasants.
this article alone makes me like romney more but i'll still vote for obama
I just can't believe that in this world today, with all of the issues we face, the Republican party is making A WOMAN'S RIGHT TO CONTRACEPTIVE OPTIONS OF ALL KINDS (OTHER THAN ABORTION) a campaign issue! It's 2012 people! We left the dark ages behind a few years back. Contraception is a woman's RIGHT. Women should be allowed to choose if and when they have children. Insurance companies must provide those health choices and services. A woman taking a pill or having surgery to prevent pregnancy is none of their friggin business. And it's none of the business of any friggin Republican jerk like Gingrich. Period! End of discussion! If you gave every one of these self righteous creeps a polygraph test or truth serum and asked them how many women they had extramarital sex with and then provided the means for preventing pregnancy or even abortion, you'd see they are all hypocritical male chauvinist pigs!
ANY of today's Republicans or conservatives claiming some kind of moral high ground or acting sanctimonious is repugnant and about as honest as the sideshow carnival snake-oil salesmen, but especially in the case of Newt Gingrich. Just a coincidence that he has the same kind of grin and facial expressions as Larry Hagman's J.R. Ewing character in the old Dallas show? No because he's just as trustworthy and believable as J.R. ever was and today's Republicans are not that much better. Conservatives have always been moral and ethical hypocrites.
Where does any man get the nerves tell a woman what to do, what she better have and what's best for her, or else. I say or else what? And can you imagine women telling men that they can or can't have children because of certain criterias. No matter what kind of circumstances this man might be in at the time of the pregnancies... I think not... And where does the Catholic church get off and decide that they will not issue out contraceptives to any women due to their beliefs. Yet they accept money from the government without any hesitation. And how about the GOP with their ideology on pro and anti abortion stances. Yet when this child is born unto a 99%er the rightwing-nuts are eliminating any and every kind of assistance to the mother and her child, claiming that these "Entitlements" are hurting the deficit. However when they were in charge "Deficits didn't matter". Don't belive me just look up (V.P Cheney)...
These hypocrytes in the GOP truly have no shame and will say and do anything within their power to retard, regress and try to return America back to the near dark ages. This party is so full of $h!t and they harbor such evil and pathetic beliefs. That if by chance they ever get in power again. Anyone that doesn't fall under their criteria of being a white male, rich and a christian. Will wish that their better off in a morgue. And that's not the way to preside over all of us Americans... Go figure and then go vote...
Newt Gringich is not just pretty face, and he's forcing people to recall Romney's own record where Romney says "in his heart of hearts" that women should have aces to emergency contraception if raped.
To hear Mitt head now, he calls the very thing he was implementing -on advise of legal counsel-"warfare against belief". If this were so Romney was the first enlistee in the war. And it's sup rising that 28 states followed his lead-including Georgia where Gingrich was Congressman.
And where was Newt while all this was going on? why did he wait till 28 states later to say something? really? He had five years to bring this up while Mitt was running around saying he was going to run. And hey-what about back when Mitt did run-where was Gingrich the eagle eyes on conservative beliefs then? why weren't there alarm bells in the street then.
And where wore the Good Catholics of Georgia? Where were the good catholics of 28 states? Why all of the sudden has this become sin? Boston is a pretty Catholic city-where were the riots in the street over this?
Give us a break-this is poopy cok put out by a heirachy that never did anything about pedophile priests for years who now want do try in divert attention from their own sins.
Why do GOP men think they have the right to tell women what to do with their bodies?
Sharia Law?
Hey Newt, were any of your "women" on birth control, and did you use a condom when having multiple affairs....Hmmmmm.
I think all religious institutions should be taxed, and follow the same healthcare rules as any other institution....after all most religious institutions are now involved with politics....and do not deserve to be exempted.
precisely. either stay out of the political picture ENTIRELY, or pay up.
It seems to me that most of the comments here miss the entire point. There are two totally different situations. If a Catholic institution (hospital or University or anything else) already offers insurance that covers birth control, the only difference would be that the employee copay would be zero. I really doubt that there would be any objection by that institution. On the other hand, if an institution currently does not cover birth control then the employee is not losing anything they currently have anyway. The argument that those institutions are taking anything away is not valid.
how on earth can ANYBODY take little moral lessons and "tips" from ginrich is what i wanna know?
he's had THREE WIVES! most through affairs!
thats exactly WHERE on the list of qualifications for someone to "speak morals" to the rest of us? not to mention be any sort of religious authority...
yeah newt.. go get that open marriage and then talk to us about social conservativism..
why any of you people listen to him is just beyond me.
Believerof--you said a mouthful.
And just remember, when a man is elected president, he takes an oath of office to uphold and defend the Constitution of the US.
Newt has TWICE before taken an oath before God and congregations to love and cherish a woman "TIL DEATH DO US PART" and BROKEN that oath.
(The fact that he has taken it again with a third woman and SEEMS to have kept it is, I believe, a tribute to the fact that she watches him like a hawk, and goes everywhere with him.)
So why ANYONE would believe any 'oath' Newt might take is beyond me.
This is biggest NOTHING in US History, and is NOT the real concern of 99% of Americans. Where is a fair GOP/RNC Jobs Plan?? If the GOP Clowns can?? Progressive Power wants the GOP Clowns too talk about designing a fair tax code for all. America needs to put people back to work now, and not later. The important issue is the huge US trade deficit, and to stop US Corporations from sending US Jobs overseas. The Unemployment rate is too high America! The "GOP Clowns" have developed NO new job training programs at all. The GOP/RNC Clowns need to create jobs, and not social distractions. That is fact!
'Ol Gingrich is running scared and throwing out all sorts of shenanigans to further confuse the already gullible.
One wonders about the direction the extremist want for this country. Everyone wants to tell the president what to do and how to do it. Obama is president, he lives in the White House and flies around on Air Force One. He's an educated man and not only won the Nobel Prize, but took out some real bad people during his first years. The U.S. economy gained 243,000 jobs in January, far above expectations. The unemployment rate dropped to 8.3%. This should be good new for the economy as the party of "NO" and the "Do Nothing" 112th Congress have failed to shut down. Bigotry and prejudice are alive and well in America today!
Per wikipedia.com: In 1961, Gingrich graduated from Baker High School in Columbus, Georgia. He became interested in politics during his teen years while living in Orléans, France, where he visited the site of the Battle of Verdun and learned about the sacrifices made there and the importance of political leadership. Here's a guy who attributes a vicious victory to "political leadership" and has probably NEVER HELD, FIRED, OR SEEN THE CONSEQUENCES of what a weapon of war will do to a human body; probably much like his republican constituency. 'Tis what we call call twats, one and all.......may all those who vote for this hawkish man behind the protective Kevlar curtain feel the wrath of what real loss really is and why his involvement in ANY military, political, or national decision is paramount to treason.
Newt's personal life says a lot about the man and his abilities to understand women's issues.
I have made a humorous video that I believe shows how his wives must have felt about his loyalties. You may see it on Youtube. . Put
"watch?v=AQSsMRe6BJE" in the youtube search bar.
Hope you enjoy!
