Boehner downplays report of tensions with Cantor

Pete Marovich / Getty Images

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, speaks during his weekly on-camera news conference on Capitol Hill February 2, 2012 in Washington, DC.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said Thursday that he enjoys a positive working relationship with his top GOP deputy, denying a report that tensions between him and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) had gotten so bad the two had been forced to call a "truce."

Boehner said that he and Cantor hadn't had a disagreement in over a year, though the speaker made veiled reference to behind-the-scenes staff feuds famous on Capitol Hill.

"We are teammates and we have been teammates, and I could tell you that I don't think there's been a disagreement between Eric and I over the course of the last year," Boehner said, "As you're clearly aware there's been a couple of staff rumbles from time to time but, you know, that's to be expected when you're doing big things."

Boehner and Cantor -- and, for that matter, the rest of the GOP leadership team -- are famous for staying in their own lanes, running separate political and press operations. Cantor is seen as the de-facto voice, though, for the more conservative, insurgent crop of House freshmen, who have made forging agreements or finding agreement difficult, at times, for the speaker.

Details of those tensions were contained Thursday in an article published in Politico, which announced that Boehner and Cantor's offices had met in January to call an effective truce between their operations.

"I talked to the whole leadership team this morning, along with the staff, the senior leaders, about our need to continue to work together for our team," Boehner told reporters. "And so, I feel good about where we are, and happy that we've got the team that we have."

At last count, Bush and Conservative policies have done a pretty good job on "destruction of America" as you put it.

And what exactly has this Administration done to reverse these policies? Blame the Republican House from 2011 if you must but the major legislation that the Democrats passed when they were in charge were the stimulus and the ACA. The ACA which contains an individual mandate. Wasn't Obama the candidate that claimed his plan would be so good that people would want to buy insurance because it would be so cheap? Didn't he slam Hillary for wanting to garnish wages? How does the individual mandate fit into this narrative? I would say this is 10 out of 10 on the flip-flop meter.

You really think those two pieces of legislation are change?

Policies that have not changed are:

Tax Policy

Afghanistan (escalated)

Unmanned Drones

Patriot Act (re-authorized)

NDAA

SS (Underfunded due payroll tax cut)

Drug Companies and Medicare

Well, Wayne, here is my rebuttal:

Tax Policy: Obama offered a plan that would let tax breaks for the wealthy expire in return for additional spending cuts; but the GOP said no, and any prospect for tax reform before 2012 is limited.

Afghanistan (escalated): Well, the surge is winding down, and technically the surge helped beat back the Taliban and reduce their threat. Plus we're set to get our troops out of that goddamn war of choice by 2014, which will save us billions over the next decade.

Unmanned drones: Technically, Obama has stepped up use of them, allowing us to take out targets like al-Awlaki. They may cause civilian casualties (in which I would ask for more coordination), but they reduce total casualties of both Americans AND civilians by enabling us to use machines with precision instead of ground troops who can accidentally kill civilians and in turn be killed.

Patriot Act: Can't say much about that...

NDAA: Obama signed the NDAA while writing a statement expressing his concerns. It will also show that he may block any parts of the bill that will violate the Constitution.

SS payroll tax cut: Unfortunately you are not up-to-date. The tax cut extension was paid for by increasing fees on mortgages. Obama actually planned to pay for the ENTIRE cost with a small surtax on millionaires, but as you know the GOP are beholden to the 1% and so they refused.

Drug Companies and Medicare: Check the Healthcare Reform bill, which will cut costs for Medicare while extending insurance coverage to millions of Americans.

Change my Ass: Not much I can say except that you aren't up to date on the change that is happening and the change that WILL happen when Obama is re-elected in 2012 and the GOP are destroyed.

    Class Warfare my Ass.

Cantor is just setting himself up to be minority leader in the House after the November elections. Boehner is just in denial about all of those knives in his back. The smart money predicted all of this after the 2010 elections. Cantor knew the tea party was useful, but ultimately had no staying power, so he let Boehner become the speaker knowing it was only for 2 years. Now he is set up to take the thrown after the 2012 republican failure puts Boehner out of the leadership.

John (we have a deal) (we don't have a deal) Boehner is claiming every thing is rosy? The TEA party leader rules the coup. Boehner keeps going back with proposals and Cantor keeps sending him back with changes.

The classic republican sticks to the rules; if you can't say something nice about a fellow republican, don't say anything at all. The conservative establishment is silent on the issue. What's that tell you?

As many times as Boehner thumbs up and thumbs down policy issues, he is awarded the Yo-Yo of the decade trophy.

Cantor can not understand facts. He wants to write history as he sees it and not what it actually says.

Those of us who watched the special interview with Cantor at his home in Virgina were stuned when he and his Chief of staff claimed that President Reagan did not raise taxes. That is simply a LIE. Reagan raised taxes 11 times during his Eight years as President.

The National debt was $930,210T whenReagan took office. Eight years later it was $2,684T. That is a whopping 189% increase in the National Debt by a Conserative President. As a comparison of Percentages of Increase in the Nationsal Debt Bush #1 was 55.6%, Clinton was 36% and Bush #2 was 89% . These numbers are posted on the Official Government web site Bureau of Public Debt.

The Republican Presidents created the Vast Majority of the Current National Debt yet they claim to be Conseratives. The FACTS don't support that claim.

Wednesday ADP reported that companies added 170,000 workers in January, reflecting job gains in services and at small businesses, according to a private report based on payrolls.

Given the usual offset between ADP and the BLS numbers I would expect the official BLS report tomorrow will show an increase of about 110,000 jobs. Perhaps a little low but that will be better than most expect after cutbacks in seasonal (Christmas retail, transportation and warehouse) jobs.

Weekly SEASONALLY ADJUSTED jobless claims down 12,000 to 367K announced today.

UNADJUSTED DATA: The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 415,094 in the week ending January 28, a decrease of 1,786 from the previous week. There were 464,775 initial claims in the comparable week in 2011, down nearly 50,000 from this same week a year ago.

Boehner - aka "Spike the dog" minus the bowler hat and striped turtleneck sweater - thought it would be fun to have the little Cantor dog prancing around at his heels, constantly pestering him with demands of "Can we go chase the Democrats now, John? Can we?! Can we?!"

Alas, as the cartoon always ended with a forlorn looking Spike peering through a set of bars - as he was being hauled away to the pound in the Dog Catcher's paddy wagon - at the conniving little dog who had set him up for the fall and was now wearing his bowler and sweater....

Et tu Johnny B. Et tu!!!

They both have pretty safe seats. They will probably both get re-elected. The only real question is whether they will be in the majority or the minority in the next Congress, and if the majority, whether Boehner will step (or be forced) aside from the speaker position.

"I talked to the whole leadership team this morning, along with the staff, the senior leaders, about our need to continue to work together for our team," Boehner told reporters. "And so, I feel good about where we are, and happy that we've got the team that we have."

Then he continued... "Mitch, Eric and I all want the same thing. As we've said before, we want to see America fail. This is the only thing that will put us back into the White House. Our team is in agreement on this. Even Rush and Grover say so...the lobbyists waiting in my office right now want it too! Once Willard "Mitt" Romney is elected, we can all shift our bank accounts from Switzerland and the Bahamas back to the USA, as we'll have no taxes at all." You could see a tiny tear form as he uttered that last sentence.....

MoonbOts are rote supporters of the GOP/TP, blandly relegating their votes to a candidate that will ship them to the moon to perform mindless robotic mining duties.

Probably, Boehner's chief of staff said Reagan raised taxes and Cantor's chief of staff yelled, "YOU LIE."

Rburn, regarding your post 1.7, I have to correct your statement: destruction of America did not start with Bush. It started with the borrow and spend policies of Reagan. Reagan was the one that started the national debt spiraling upward and out of control. Republicans, unless you haven't noticed, are tax, borrow and spend liberals. They like to say they are fiscal conservatives, but that's a great big fat lie. They spend like drunken sailors, then when they don't have a Republican in the White House, they complain bitterly about balancing the budget. It's all smoke and mirrors. Clinton, on the other hand balanced the budget and left a budget surplus for George W.

Republicans are certainly social conservatives. That is why I can never find a Republican who remotely reflects my own political philosophy because I'm fiscally conservative and for small government, but socially, I'm a live and let live kind of guy. Both these are at the opposite ends of the Republicans positions.

Don't ever let a Republican convince you that Republicans are fiscally conservative. If you look at what they say, I guess they are, but if you look at their records, it tells a totally different story. They love huge bureaucracy. Who else would have a marriage czar other than a Republican governor like Brownback of Kansas? Who else would institute scores of bureaucratic requirements to get medical treatments and come between you and your doctor than Republicans, like they are doing in Texas right now? Who else would burgeon the cost of the legislative process with unprecedented use of the filibuster than the Senate Republicans? Ask yourself why the national debt rose something like 5 trillion dollars under GWB. Look at the neocons website, Project for a New American Century, (which Romney supports) and you will see they advocate for increases in military spending. SPEND SPEND SPEND. That is all the Republicans know how to do, that and borrow.

Don't get me wrong, I know there are times when spending is necessary. But it is excessive and useless spending that I'm complaining about. Pork pork pork. Republicans are the image that I think of when I think of pork, like the bridge to nowhere. Why they like to spend so much I will never know. It's like giving a credit card to a clothes horse.

Perhaps that is why Boehner and Cantor are fighting, there is some constraint on their spending right now and they are both jonesing for it. They need a fix. They haven't had a blank check to just keep shoveling out the money and borrowing like they could under GWB.

When Bush got in the White House in 2001, gasoline was a buck fifty. before his eight years was up, it rose to over four bucks. thankfully, he's gone and it has come down some.

When he and Cheney started in 2001, defense and war spending was 400 billion/year. by the time he left, it was 800 billion/year. They are like junkies. I just don't know how they can claim fiscal conservatism, unless they are like every other kind of junky, they just lie and steal to get more money. Thankfully, now that they are gone, that figure is also coming down.

Maybe that's what Boehner and Cantor are fighting about, which lies to tell that will get them more spending.
