Gingrich takes aim at Romney's remark about poor

RENO, NV -- Newt Gingrich seized Wednesday on a Mitt Romney gaffe, suggesting that the former Massachusetts governor had acted divisively by saying he was not concerned about very poor people.

Gingrich, who finished a distant second behind Romney in yesterday's Florida Republican primary, wasted no time at his first event in Nevada before going after Romney for the remark, which has replayed on cable news channels all day since the comments were first made this morning.

"I want to start with something the governor said today because it gives you a perfect distinction in our two approaches," Gingrich told supporters inside Great Basin Brewery. "Now, let me just say something here. I am fed up with politicians in either party pitting Americans against each other. I am running to be the president of all the American people, I am concerned about all the American people."

The former House speaker said that while all Republicans are committed to defeating Obama, a “real debate is starting in our own party about what is the best way to defeat Barack Obama." This is evident by the varying winners of the early nominating states. Money, Gingrich argues, is not the answer.

“I don’t believe that Gov. Romney can afford to outspend us 5-to-1 every place in the country. And I guarantee you that’s not a formula for him to defeat Obama because he’s sure not going to outspend Obama. I believe ideas matter. I believe people matter,” the speaker said.

Coming off a double-digit loss in Florida, Gingrich also faces an uphill battle in Nevada -- a caucus state that many predict Romney will also carry.

The speaker, who acknowledged Romney’s advantage in the state, vowed to still compete here as he spoke to reporters this afternoon.

“We are here to campaign. We are competing across the whole state. We want to compete in every single caucus meeting that occurs and I thought frankly this was a pretty good starting point for that,” he said and noted his campaign is adding more events to their schedule for the week ahead.

Gingrich only has private meetings in Las Vegas for the remainder of the day.

Why isn't msnbc reporting the biggest story the last 2 hours. Gingrich just filed for his portion of the delegates in florida. Which he does have right to since florida broke the rules. They had a winner take all before april 1st. Romney is gonna lose a lot of delegates based on the rule. People will say well they were punished. Not true they were punished for moving up there primary. They haven't been punished for there winner take all status. It couldn't be filed till after the vote. Florida GOP are as dumb as rocks. Florida thinks they above the party. I hate newt and Romney. I just can't figure out why Msnbc skips on some of the good news.

Earlier today i was on another story and the conservatives there were saying this uproar was all some liberal distortion of Romneys remarks..all the fault of the nasty news media..Now this..

.I dont think they will change their position because the ability to hold two contradictory ideas in their dumb ass heads at the same time and believe them both to be true is what makes them what they are..

They think its all a liberal media distortion..they think Newt is a conservative...You figure out the rest..

The whole idea of Newt defending the poor is so bizarre, I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

If, perchance, the American electorate should decide to choose either Newt or Willard over Obama, or for that matter, even over Ron Paul, they would be doing the country the greatest disservice imaginable.

Wake up people! You don't like ObamaCare health policy? Well then you shouldn't like RomneyCare either. Romney crammed his mandatory health policy down our throats here in Massachusetts when he was governor-- long before ObamaCare came along. Wake up to what Romney really is about!!! ...... As usual Fox Noise got it wrong. Per the NRC rules the following will take place regarding the Florida delegates (per the times) : A new Republican National Committee rule says that no state holding its presidential contest before April is allowed to award its delegates to the national convention on a winner-take-all basis, unless it is one of the four early carve-out states (Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada).

Many states see the winner-take-all as being preferable to a proportional format, because it provides for bigger swings in the delegate race and makes their states more important. Thus, the RNC created the new rule to make it less appealing for states to move their contests earlier in the year.

Florida is already in violation of RNC rules because it moved its primary into January. And the RNC, which has already docked Florida half of its delegates for moving its primary up, says it cannot punish a state twice.

Therefore, the states that are already in violation of RNC rules for setting their primaries too early (Florida, Arizona and Michigan) were allowed to go winner-take-all.

As much as Newt thinks he can change the world, there are some things that are just beyond his control, including Callista’s spending habits.

do you have a link to that. Florida received a letter in december after they were docked half there delegates. The letter stated that they couldn't have a winner take all before April 1st or the other nominees could file for there portion of the delegates

You changed the whole article around. Doesn't say anything about them not being able to punish twice nice try.

This is why, when former RNC chairman Michael Steele said on MSNBC today that Florida was not a winner-take-all state, eyebrows were raised.

“Florida’s proportional,” said Steele, who opposes Florida’s winner-take-all status. “Florida violated the April 1st rule of the RNC, Rule 15, and their delegates, whatever number’s apportioned to them, will be proportional for the candidates.”

keck, probably above your pay grade to distinguish between taxpayer funded and out of pocket funded? You see, the Obamas have enough personal wealth to pay out of pocket.

Sorry keck - I don't care what you thought you saw or heard on TV, Florida will remain a winner take all state. The RNC stated in it's previous letter, last year, that it would not punish Florida twice. The reduced their delegate count by 1/2 as punishment for an early primary. Changing the awarding of delegates would be punishing Florida twice, according to the RNC, and that they will not do.

However every family member of the President will incur SOMETHINGS at taxpayer expense, whether Rpublican or Democrat...they eat food, have staff, have protection...get real, they give up all semblance of a private life, and there is realistically no other way to do it...so unless you are going to research the adjusted spending of every Presidential family, get off it...

It has not only brought a higher standard of living to a greater number of people than any other economic system in the history of mankind; more important, it has been a decisive instrument in preserving freedom through maintaining private control of economic power and thus limiting the power of government.

He may be a good business man, but I dont beleive that is in the best interest of 90% of the Americans. For example, he is in favor of mortgage foreclosures, let investors buy up the homes and rent them. How does that relate to the American Dream? Many, but not all, have fallen on bad times not because any fault of their own. I also beleive he was in favor of letting GMC and Chrysler fail. Today. they are both doing good as American Companies. If the Government would not have helped them out, you all would be buying yor cars from China and Japan. And, I beleive, both GMC and Crysler are on there way to paying back the US Govt. What an Investnment for the US Govt!

that is actually a great idea for the homes that are doomed for foreclosure they can be bought out and rented out which will speed up the sale of foreclosed homes and help stablize homes values instead of doing nothing and watching the homes slowly go into foreclosure and sell and continue to bring down the vlaue of real estate

yes some wanted gm to fail because they felt it was not fair to other companies that failed and did not get bailed out their would have been a adjustment ans possibly come back strong the ups and downs as a free market

Not on any fault of their own? I lived in California in 2004 on a military base and they had just finished building 16,000 new homes by the base and the starting price was 550,000 for a two bedroom house with no yard. Within a few weeks they had sold all the homes and there was a waiting list for the next 20,000 homes but the price went up by 50,000. No one in the area had a paycheck that could afford to purchase a 600,000 home. But that did not stop them they went with the interest only ARM and 3 to 5 years it would come due (everyone thought that they would just move out and make money on the deal). No fault of their own? Then who do we blame. The housing crisis is what sent our markets crashing and the people making the loans saw the storm clouds coming and just did not care. No fault of their own? It is all of our faults. We put people like Gingrich and other in offices in the 80 and 90 that de-regulated as much as they could and the buzzards came in and cleaned house on all of us. ++++++ No fault of their own. Who is running in this primary that has a chance to get us on the right path if we blow it then once again someone will say no fault of their own. It will be our fault as it has always been. We the people get to select our leaders and we put them in office and some years ago someone said they are there to work for us. That has not happened in a long time. Who is at fault we are. Lets get rid of the old. Three of the four Republicans are the old. They have gone to DC and what did they do for us. Who did they work for and what values do the hold today that they have been true to? No fault of their own?

When I'm not kissing babies, I'm stealing their lollypops" [ Ref: Hunt for Red October.]

Mitt Romney is all smiles and all charisma, which should be everyone's first clue that he's a politician trying to win over voters. Because Romney is a politician, everyone should remember Pelt's words.

It is funny to read what the media or the spin cycle can spit out. The media rewrites and leaves out way to many facts. Then Gingrich has to come charging in to save the day. Really. A pole would show that about 1 percent would worry about the rich, 95 percent would worry about the middle class and 4 percent would worry about the very poor. The very poor in this country do not have it as bad as third world countries. They very poor have a safety net. We take care of our very poor. So what was wrong with his statement?

This includes not only the middle class but also many in the military. If you are so tired of the media, then stop watching Fox Noise. Oh sorry, they are only entertainment, not news.
