Gingrich takes aim at Romney's remark about poor

RENO, NV -- Newt Gingrich seized Wednesday on a Mitt Romney gaffe, suggesting that the former Massachusetts governor had acted divisively by saying he was not concerned about very poor people.

Gingrich, who finished a distant second behind Romney in yesterday's Florida Republican primary, wasted no time at his first event in Nevada before going after Romney for the remark, which has replayed on cable news channels all day since the comments were first made this morning.

"I want to start with something the governor said today because it gives you a perfect distinction in our two approaches," Gingrich told supporters inside Great Basin Brewery. "Now, let me just say something here. I am fed up with politicians in either party pitting Americans against each other. I am running to be the president of all the American people, I am concerned about all the American people."

The former House speaker said that while all Republicans are committed to defeating Obama, a “real debate is starting in our own party about what is the best way to defeat Barack Obama." This is evident by the varying winners of the early nominating states. Money, Gingrich argues, is not the answer.

“I don’t believe that Gov. Romney can afford to outspend us 5-to-1 every place in the country. And I guarantee you that’s not a formula for him to defeat Obama because he’s sure not going to outspend Obama. I believe ideas matter. I believe people matter,” the speaker said.

Coming off a double-digit loss in Florida, Gingrich also faces an uphill battle in Nevada -- a caucus state that many predict Romney will also carry.

The speaker, who acknowledged Romney’s advantage in the state, vowed to still compete here as he spoke to reporters this afternoon.

“We are here to campaign. We are competing across the whole state. We want to compete in every single caucus meeting that occurs and I thought frankly this was a pretty good starting point for that,” he said and noted his campaign is adding more events to their schedule for the week ahead.

Gingrich only has private meetings in Las Vegas for the remainder of the day.

Remember this: When Newton was bounced out of congress he was FORBIDDEN to ever run again for public office. That's how repugnant his republican cohorts thought he was. OK? But Newton slipped through that prohibition when Tom DeLay, another republican crook, was later thrown out of congress and the rules for DeLay were changed, allowing Newton to run for office again. Newt is a piece of slime that should be flushed. He knows it and so do his republican buddies. I mean, how awful must you be for your "friends" to tell you to NEVER run again for public office?

You're only hearing the GOP / Tea Bag Party of Hate & Death 2012 Prez hopefuls in public ... what is it you think they're saying and plotting in private ?

It's all the *poor* campaign clowns & strategists-zombies that have to appear a minute later on TV and explain what they really meant then tell you you're nutz for hearing what they just said as taking it out of context ... each and every time ... because you're the wacko ... LOL.

Like Gingrich cares about the poor. He speaks worse about them than Romney and Romney is bad enough. The Republicans have become an ugly, sick political Party. They have made no effort to save themselves from some of the worst candidates in recent history. Not everyone, myself included, agrees with all of President Obama's policies but one thing is evident. He cares about the poor, the working men and women of this country and the unemployed. He looks better and better to me.

Suval, So now Obama is the hero for all poor people? Really? He communicates to us that he cares about the poor. What has he done to show this? How much did he fight for them? The poor in this country is getting poorer under his administration. There is even resentment in some black communities who are finding their situation a lot worse. Actions speak louder than words Mr. President! I don't think the poor are feeling the love for you.

Oh, the Dems want to abort black babies and something else to the effect of Abraham Lincoln saving the blacks so they need to kiss Republicans' ass's ? ... did he actually say blacks voted for Lincoln ?

Wake up people! You don't like ObamaCare health policy? Well then you shouldn't like RomneyCare either. Romney crammed his mandatory health policy down our throats here in Massachusetts when he was governor-- long before ObamaCare came along. Wake up to what Romney really is about!!! Romeny, Gingrich, whoever wins the GOP nomination....can NOT win the WH. No GOP candidate currently running can win the WH, it is not going to happen.

President Obama is assured a 2nd term because GOP does not have a viable candidate that majority of American voters will support.

GOP better focus on 2016, because 2012 is already decided. Obama/Biden 2012.

Dragon, Wow! You really are delusional. Am I the only one reading and watching the news here about the state of our economy? Are you in denial about what is going on? Whoever wins the GOP nomination has Obama's pathetic record to run on. That is all they need to win the White House . Obama has nothing to run on except for the only weaon he has left to use, class warfare. This will not work for the people. They want jobs, a healthy economy. The prediction from Bernake is that there will be little to no improvement in the economy in the next two years. Why would people want to accept this and want to give him a second term? Give me a break.

Dee Dee Dee.... delusional = Gnewt, Romney, Paul, and Sanitarium! Gnewt already has his cabinet picked out... his first programs to cut, to repeal.... Romney wants to "help the poor" LOL.. what a joke that one is; Sanitarium wants to outlaw birth control and abortion and then says that Obama's healthcare plan puts government in your personal business LOL... what the hell is trying to control our reproductive systems?.... and Paul is lucky that he can keep his looney a$$ awake. What a bunch of jokes!

Soros himself said , regarding fiscal policy, that their would be no difference between a Romney presidency or Obamas. Romney would be a foreign policy disaster, he shoots from the lip, and would get us in a nuclear war, scarry guy!

So the GOP are having a controversy about how to beat President Obama? Hmmm, let's see, how about coming up with some new ideas? How about rather than just spouting sound bites they explain exactly HOW htey propose to 'fix' the economy. I don't want to hear 'we need to create jobs' or 'we need to deregulate' or we're going to take back our country'.

How about some specifics? If you have a better plan, fine, you deserve t win. But we know the President's roadmap. He's put forward jobs bills, he passed healthcare reform. You guys don't like either but you offer nothing but rhetoric.

Dsb, Apparently all you are hearing is the candidates saying that we need to create jobs and take back the country. Actually most candidates have very specific plans on how to fix the economy. They have said so over and over in the debates if you actually watched them. Romney, in particular, has been communication his detailed plan on the campaign trail over and over again. If you would like to read about it, go to Mitt Romney's website, MittRomney.com. It is a very, clear and thought out plan on bringing jobs back and restoring our economy.

I have watched every televised debate. All I heard was childish squabbling. I was specific facts and a road map. How else am I to decide? Sound bites and claims just don't cut it for me.

Only days after calling Obama the "food stamp President" (with the implied demonization of those unfortunate enough to qualify for this program), Gingrich is OUTRAGED and characterizes Romney's foot-in-mouth moment as "divisive".

Apost8, I am not a defender of Gingrich but on this issue on the food stamp President issue I have to speak out. By saying obama is the food stamp president, he is not demonizing the poor or referring to a certain group. I don't understand why people take this out of context. It is obvious that Gingrich was trying to make a point that under Barack Obama, the number of people relying on food stamps is the highest it has ever been, that Obama has created an environmnet that forces people to have to rely on food stamps just to get by. The point he was making is that he wants to create an environmnent in which people will have jobs, not to have people rely on foodstamps. What is so wrong with that thinking? isn't that what people want? jobs?

            #62.1 - Wed Feb 1, 2012 9:31 PM EST

I'm sorry, but Newt is throwing red meat to people like you who don't really have a clue and belive everything that comes out of that tadpoles mouth. What group is he referring to if not people on food stamps. The 1%?

People want jobs, but they want jobs that pay a living wage. There are far too many people going to work every day in this country, living on an income that is below the poverty level. It's not just more jobs, it's decent jobs.

As far as food stamps go, there are actually fewer people on food stamps now than under Bush. Check out the Department of Agriculture stats.

What is poor in america. U stay in decent house, u drive a car, kids go to school, u get food if need be. to be poor is a relative term. i have been and lived in places where the whole family has to live on less than a 1$ a day. Kids have never owned a pair of shoes in their life but they walk to school (miles) just to get an education. these politicians(all of them) should have term limits like the president, most of them(obama included) are completely out of touch with the working class. If the middle class fails, then the poor go with them because there will be no one to provide the funding to help them. Who pays the bulk of the taxes in this country that helps the poor? The Middle Class. The country will be truly bankrupt with no taxes coming in. It's critical for the Middle Class to survive. Do we understand how this works now?

What garbage! Whether it's Newt spewing it or NBC/MSNBC this whole issue is nothing more than an attempt by the political hustlers of the world to turn the 2012 race for the presidnecy into a dumbing down exercise.

In other words, seek out the most inflammatory quote or quotes of your opponent -- regardless of the context. Then spread the word in a manner that the witless or intellectually challenged can use when their ilk are incapable of wrapping their minds around really important issues.

Indeed, anyone with half a mind knows exactly what Romney meant with his statement, even if he failed to artfully articulate it. He cares as much for the poor as the next fellow and certainly more than most Democrats. His charitable record is well documented. But hey, why let such details get in the way of an opportunity to demonize the guy, right? It's the American way. Why change -- or better yet, why not?

If Ron Paul could only be less kooky and more practical about what he can accomplish as a libertarian Constitution loving president, we might have a more consistent option for compare and contrast.

While he says this he plans on raising taxes on the middle class and cutting taxes for the very rich! Gnewt wants the poor kids to do janitorial work to "learn work ethic". They get worse and worse every time they open their mouths..... can't help from saying stupid s**t. They are both disgusting and don't know why anyone would vote for these two idiots.

Hey if you don't like the pac money, check out Buddy Roemer from Louisiana. He will only accept $100 for donation from anyone person. He also tells it like it is, they've stolen our country from us and it's time to get it back. He has tried to get in the debates but they keep moving the qualifications each time he reaches what they said last time. I have always said we are fed what the media wants us to know, if you think Ron Paul gets the short end with the media, well there's a whole lot more too. But yea, we have only 2 people we can choose from, right!
