Gingrich takes aim at Romney's remark about poor

RENO, NV -- Newt Gingrich seized Wednesday on a Mitt Romney gaffe, suggesting that the former Massachusetts governor had acted divisively by saying he was not concerned about very poor people.

Gingrich, who finished a distant second behind Romney in yesterday's Florida Republican primary, wasted no time at his first event in Nevada before going after Romney for the remark, which has replayed on cable news channels all day since the comments were first made this morning.

"I want to start with something the governor said today because it gives you a perfect distinction in our two approaches," Gingrich told supporters inside Great Basin Brewery. "Now, let me just say something here. I am fed up with politicians in either party pitting Americans against each other. I am running to be the president of all the American people, I am concerned about all the American people."

The former House speaker said that while all Republicans are committed to defeating Obama, a “real debate is starting in our own party about what is the best way to defeat Barack Obama." This is evident by the varying winners of the early nominating states. Money, Gingrich argues, is not the answer.

“I don’t believe that Gov. Romney can afford to outspend us 5-to-1 every place in the country. And I guarantee you that’s not a formula for him to defeat Obama because he’s sure not going to outspend Obama. I believe ideas matter. I believe people matter,” the speaker said.

Coming off a double-digit loss in Florida, Gingrich also faces an uphill battle in Nevada -- a caucus state that many predict Romney will also carry.

The speaker, who acknowledged Romney’s advantage in the state, vowed to still compete here as he spoke to reporters this afternoon.

“We are here to campaign. We are competing across the whole state. We want to compete in every single caucus meeting that occurs and I thought frankly this was a pretty good starting point for that,” he said and noted his campaign is adding more events to their schedule for the week ahead.

Gingrich only has private meetings in Las Vegas for the remainder of the day.

What a hypocrite! The guy who calls Spanish "the language of the ghetto" is concerned over Romney's comments? Is there a bigger loser, and I mean BIGGER, than "The Newt!" Okay, maybe Trump, but that's it.

No need to worry about the middle class, soon we will all be poor. That's part of the corporate raider play book. Buy good companies, ship the good jobs overseas, suck all the money off for yourself, ddeclare bankruptcy and then replace the manufacturing job with low paying service sector jobs. Mitt's plan for the middle class make them all poor than poor.

Romney is right. The upper rich 1% are doing well. But that doesn't mean they need to be left alone. Take for instance their tax rate i mean romney's tax rate of 14%. He needs to change that immediately. It's a work around the intent of the tax law using a foreign country.

    Reply#28 - Wed Feb 1, 2012 6:56 PM EST

Wow, its all of 14%, that does need to be changed immediately to like ZERO. Then Mitt can become part of the 50% that Republicons complain of paying no taxes.

One assumes that the Obama campaign is taking notes. To be sure, Hillary had some biting comments about Obama and Obama made some gaffes, but there didn't seem to be this many over such a long period of time.

Lets see Rommeny gives 25% to charity ... 10% Religion and 15% to the poor ... if more of those with Rommenys income gave 15% to the poor ... there wouldnt be any poor ... so how much does Stinkrich, Sanatroum, and Paul give to charity and the poor ... NOTHING. (I looked at the tax returns and its impressive what Rommney does give. Although you might hear of Bill Gates and Oprah charities ... their personal donations pale in total and arent even close in percentage) Also, BO and wife give less than 1% to charity... Look at the donations .. Rommney definately cares about the poor ... but he knows if he doesnt help the middle class ... we will only have what Obama, Stinkrich and Palin want ... The Ultra Rich and the Ultra Poor.

So you say Mitt gives 50% of his income to charity?

The Mormon religion probably gave him a lot more than 10% for running in 2012. And "religion" is just a front for "GOP" these days anyway.

"Romulian Romney" has always NOT cared about the very poor, and he NEVER will. The "Speculator and Chief" is a "Bain Trained" CEO Corporate Raidef. The "Romulian" has NO intention of strengthening the "Economic Safety Net," and he has clear intentions to dismantle it. That is fact! It is not shocking at all America to hear the "Romulian" state this, and he is clearly going to pass the "Richie Rich Ryan Plan." The "Romulian" has NEVER thought about the Middle Class! That is a GOP Joke America! The "Romulian Romney" views on taxes are only spoke about in "Quiet Rooms." It is becoming very clear why this is the case America. The "Romulian" has NEVER earned his own paycheck, and has NO clue of what working hard means. The "Romulian" is in the top 0.06% of Americans, and has NO idea of what means to be unemployed. Very poor Americans are "Expendible" Economically to the "Romulian." Yes America! The "Romulian" is "Economically Evil!" Hey! Hey! Ho! Ho! The Party Of NO has got to GO!!

It is the height of hypocrisy for ANY Republican to talk about relying on a "safety net" when the GOP has spent DECADES doing everything possible to unravel, or just outright remove, that same net.

Did Romney really go to Harvard? Boy, is he acting dumb. Romney stated in public what he should have talked about only in his quiet strategy room. Poor people will vote Democratic. Wealthy people are already with Romney and the middle class will be the tie breaker. Perhaps we need to look at Romney's grades?

The more absurd, disgusting, and ludicrous the statements from the right are, the better the conservative base likes it.

Just a sampling: electrocute a fence between Mexico and Us, put the poor kids to work as janitors because they have no role models, corporations are people my friend, I don't need to worry about the poor.

does anyone in their right mind, after watching any of the repub debates believe any repub is concerned about the middleclass or the poor. that includes all of the candidates. they are concerned about the rich who pay them off.

Yeah Newt, tell us all how you can feel the pain of the poor people. Wasn't it not too long ago, you had a $500,000 Tiffany bill???? Please, you're almost as phony as your wife's mortuary hairdo.

Go Newt! Drag it out until the convention! I believe in you. If you don't get the Republican nomination, run as a third party candidate. The country needs you to do that. Seriously. I can't think of a better way for the 2012 presidential race to unfold. The ~20% of the country that doesn't think you are a disgusting pig needs a voice and you are just the man to oink it--speak it.

        oops.

Nancy Reagan passed the helm (mantle or torch) to Gingrich - not Ronald Reagan. Ronald Reagan had plenty of time and opportunity to bless Gingrich - and - he did no such thing.

By standard they are both out of touch. Romney can afford to mouth off 10k bets and Gingrich shops at Tiffany's on a credit line. Romney thinks that 90-95 % of americans are doing middle class, Gingrich hangs out with Fannie and Freddy.

Gingrich (and his friend Charles Krauthammer) lying will not help Newt (n1twit) win the GOP nomination. Lying is like dying you soil yourself and everyone around you smells the stink even if you don't. "Stinking Liar" is the term often given to traitors such as Judas and Brute.

        Dear Newt Gingrich:

Take my advice and give up. You no longer have a chance (better than one in a million) to get the nomination, especially since you are about to plunge into a sea of Romney states. All you are doing now is helping Obama win the election. I am giving you this advice because Republicans are knee jerk no sayers, and you are going to do just the opposite of what I advise. That will be very good for Obama.

Forget it Newty Fruity. Nevada is gone. Mormon city is a few hours drive. You're toast anyway, but try to keep this sideshow alive as long as you can. Concentrate on your next winnable target, and that ain't going to be close to Cult Central (SLC).

You can hardly call Gingrich a "charitable soul". Newt supports child exploitation for janitorial roles. *ALL* of the ultra-Christian teabags are dangerously out of touch with mainstream American values.
