Mitt Romney is well on his way to a decisive victory in the Florida primary, according to the early returns and exit polls.
And like in New Hampshire -- and unlike in South Carolina -- Romney is winning across the board among most voting groups.
But there are still some warning signs for him among conservative voters in Florida.
Among “very conservative voters” –- 33% of the electorate (compared with 36% in South Carolina) –- Newt Gingrich wins those folks, 43%-29%. Romney, however, wins “somewhat conservative” voters, 51%-32%.
Among evangelical voters -- who make up four in 10 voters (versus nearly two in three in South Carolina) -- Gingrich wins, 39%-36%.
What’s more, 38% say they’re not satisfied with the GOP field and want someone else to run, and Romney and Gingrich essentially split those folks.
Finally, 41% believe that Romney isn’t conservative enough, and Gingrich beats him among those folks, 58%-11%.
Bottom line: Romney's projected victory is his most impressive to date (taking place outside New Hampshire, where he owns a home and was governor of neighboring Massachusetts). But he still hasn't closed the deal with the most conservative of GOP primary voters.

He still isnt winning the true conservative's ,esp if you check out northern Fla.
...or the independents...
...but maybe he will get the Morman vote...LoLoL
I can see by the county's he won , just the wealthy people voted for him !
Who isn't enjoying watching the Walking Dead - feast on each other!
Such a shame the right wing nitwits only have flawed candidates - better luck nest time righties! lmao!
Flawed candidates?
You have the attorney general just a week or two away from being found in contempt of congress and a president that can't even visit the state of Georgia for fear of being handcuffed and tossed in jail for ignoring a subpoena.
Newsflash, Mickey- Florida is a closed primary. Nobody won the "independents".
Second- please, First Read. Who do you think those "disaffected" voters will turnout for? Obama? Keep dreaming.
See, people who turn out to vote in primaries VOTE.
They vote in local elections.
They vote in state elections.
They, definately, vote in mid-term elections.
And, unless they're dead, they vote in presidential elections.
(unless they're democrats- then, they might, actually, vote after being deceased. Particularly if registered in Illinois.).
Sooooooo- all those folks who voted "other"? All those who "wish" there was a "perfect" candidate? They'll vote for the nominee.
It'll be Romney.
Get ready for for President Romney.
Obama shelved in 2012.
Floridians are sick and tired of the negative campaign ads.
Oh Nooooooo.
What id the heck is Obama gonna do?
Run on his record?
Man those CBO numbers are absolutely brutal.
Oh and speaking of walking dead Feisty = how are Quinn's approval rating doing?
Could that monkey have done a better job ensuring Walker keeps on rocking for three more years or what?
How much is that whole silly recall thing going to cost the taxpayers of wisconsin anyway?
I suspect it ain't cheap. OPM.
The libs love to spend Other People's Money.
The libs love to spend Other People's Money.
Did the Repubs alone pay for their primary?
Shhhhh, Ideology. You weren't supposed to tell that the tax payers of Florida paid for today's little shingdig!
[Newsflash, Mickey- Florida is a closed primary. Nobody won the "independents".]
No @!$%#, Dick Tracy...I wasn't talking about Florida...
Sure you did Mickey.
Burn!
I wonder if Newt will take the hint...
Naa, I suspect he's a lot like you.
Well, except for gender. But then you sure never do.
It's why I love you Mickey.
Dear Spanky, I'm dumping you for Mickey.
Best Regards, Cynthia
P.S. It's not me, it's you. Oh, I had the locks changed. I used your toothbrush to clean the toilet and I found a homeless shelter that really appreciated all your clothes. The police said you could pickup your car from the impound lot at your convenience(daily charges are $125.) ;-)
THat's cool Cynthia, cause I a one woman man.
I suspect that's what has always had my girl Mickey knicker in a bunch.
And the pick up is safe and sound - still hooked up to the boat in Havasu.
Canadians are used to no one going into a convention with 50% of the delegates ... with 46 states to go, I yawn. and wait patiently.
Canadians are better at practicing patience than Americans, I am afraid.
Mickey,NY, I think Newt is living in his own reality. Do I think he will take the hint? No. He wasn't even man enough to congratulate Mitt Romney. Class act not.
[He wasn't even man enough to congratulate Mitt Romney. Class act not]
All this from the self-proclaimed party of morals and ethics...
lisa,
In checking the counties around me, Mitt barely won Duval (Jacksonville). He did when big in St. John's but I attribute that to our large retirement community (mostly from the Northeast). However, in 4 other counties near me, Newt won. These counties I would consider "Old South" So, you can do what you want with that info, I just hope it is helpful.
Hey, wait a second Mickey.
Is that a ....wait for it....'talking point?'
Huh. And here I though you hated those.
Or is you your just don't actually understand the term.
Poor Mickey.
Phinephancy, Who won Dade,Broward and Palm Beach Countys? It would also be helpful to know who won the coveted I-4 corridor.
Romney won the Miami area and the Palm beaches. Also the Tampa/St. Pete. area. All areas with a high number of folks from the Northeast. I have heard about the I-4 corridor (Orlando). Have to get back to you on that.
Phinephancy, If Romney won Miami, Palm Beach, Tampa and St Pete he may be doing well with socially liberal republicans. I wonder what that might say about the General election. re: our last conversation sweet dreams.
lisa,
Ok. Here's what I got from the Orlando paper is Romney won Orange County. Again, a very liberal place (after all, that's where the Mouse lives).
lisa,
Gotta dream.
Phinephancy, Thanks for the info. Have a good evening.
You too, girl. Always a pleasure talking to you.
Romney wins in Florida huh Well it is Florida But this is a disaster for conservatives but I can jusy imagine the so called powers that be high fiven each other along with obumba and his hatchmen
Lead, follow, or get out of the way
Time for Obama to get out of the way!
Romney/Rubio 2012
Bwahahaha! get out of the way of WHAT? A stand-still Congress?
Obama/Biden 2012
Nice one Rob. Getting your talking points straight from Mitt.
Oh Boy! Weathervane Willard takes Florida!
Romney/Rubio the best flip floppers money can buy!
Obama/Biden 2012
Romney doesn't need to win over the conservative base to win the nomination. The question is whether he'll feel the need to placate them during the general or if he can navigate the middle ground while under fire from both sides.
Governor Romney needs to acknowledge the conservatives, but he won't need to placate them. The conservatives will vote for anyone but President Obama. A vote for "whoever" is nominated is a vote against the President, and I think given the choice, conservatives would rather choose the one they are less unhappy with. (I'm sure used to voting for the lesser of two evils, sadly).
Romney needs to focus on the non-party affiliated, non-ideological independents. Because the truth is --- no matter how hard either side wants to believe otherwise--- most Americans are in the middle.
Candice, Your right about most Americans being in the middle. Whoever wins will have to appeal to moderates.
44% of voters are locked in to vote democrat. 44% are locked in to voting for the republican candidate.
12% are noncommited but of those 12% only 20% of them think Obama deserves to be reflected.
Not good news for Obama.
Sadly, Candice, you are right.
I disliked Bill Clinton as a human being- but I voted for his re election.
Now? The polarization is so great it is unbridgeable. We are more polarized than ever before- and why?
Well, blame the death of the Democratic Leadership Committee, for one thing. That party has been overtaken by its fringe. For a while, I blamed the evangelicals for the polarization of the republican party- but the TEA parties, which encompassed folks from all walks of life, seems to have caused a drawing together of those who understand the important issues.
Blame Obama, who sees class warfare as a legitimate issue. It worked well for Europe, did it not? They are reaping the rewards of that mentality now.
Blame us- who allowed it to happen.
Tea Party...people from all walks of life? you gotta be kidding. Narrow minded , yes. Ignorant or incapable of recognizing reality. The party and it's people they put their hopes and trust in are using them. Their politicians/candidates sell hatred & show disrespect towards others and then say Amen...
and 'sadly' dear NoJo support for the Teaparty is falling and fading.
You have two sides here. The far left and the far right each eager to blame the other for all the problems of the world. Yet, I say to both sides, you all are the cause. You need to realize there really is a middle ground. And for the good of all I hope you find it soon!
Hey, No Joe.
Evangelicals. The article - and so many articles - point to evangelicals having a major influence and making up" four in ten voters". To me, and according to the Webster definition, an evangelical is more about born again conversion, preaching and on the edge of the radical. Does the press ask voters if they are Christian, and then lump them in the category of Evangelical?
I know a lot of people. Most of them Christian. And none of them would describe themselves as Evangelical.
But Phine, both the far right and the far left claim to be the middle and muddle the murky mess. Misfits scream the loudest and the press hates to report on silence.
Do you remember the term, "the silent majority", Ideology. And that same majority got mad and actually influenced a few elections? I think the same may happen again. The middle is tired of being the battlefield for these two sides. (Americans Elect is a good first step)
Good evening Candice, perchance would that rose be peach or orange?
phinephancy, Sadly I am old enough to remember "the silent majority". They will make themselves heard and decide the next election. I do not know who they will eventually decide to vote for but they are who the candidates should focus on. Maybe the candidates should try to listen to them too.
Good evening, Ideology.
The rose: could be pink - meaning "Perfect Happiness" Could be orange - meaning "fascination" IT could be peach - meaning "Let's get together." (about issues, of course).
I'll go with peach.
Candice, I could not agree more ... flirtation, attention without intention.
Now to be brutal. Your country needs a third party that resides in the middle.
Peach being modesty ...
Ideology.
At first, a third party sounds like a good idea. With our two parties, one half of the country feels unrepresented in any political cycle. With three parties, the candidate two-thirds of the citizens didn't want would win.
True, though. If there was a moderate centrist that could rally and unite both sides of the nation, leaving only the tiny fringe left and tiny fringe right the only ones grumbling...what a happy place and productive place this would be.
Candice,
My concern would not be for the Presidency, but a congress that would be forced to compromise. We have a system up here that marries social needs and capitalism almost harmoniously.
Yikes we are 30billion in debt.
People can't be forced to compromise. There has to be an environment that encourages, and allows people to do so. A good leader would create that environment. President Obama promised that but failed quickly.
Compromise might also come if money and politics were removed and our Powers That Be went back to the actual concept of public service.......serving all of the people.
The failure came from both sides as you know Candice and more blame can be laid be laid at the Republican feet than anywhere else. You must recall that after the election Republicans ran from everything they voted for at the close of 2007. Why? They turned around and blamed all it on him.
Candice,
Dear Lord, girl. The idea of actual public service! We would lose 98% of those in office (I leave 2% in as a hope a couple folks up there really do want to serve the public good!) :)
Ideology. I place a lot of blame on both sides. I do. I don't blame one more than the other, though. The Republicans messed up - huge! And for their mistakes, they lost in the 2007 elections. Then the Democrats messed up - huge! And for their mistakes, they lost the midterms.
Now, I do believe that a true leader - a great leader - would be able to stem a lot of the division and help the sides find common ground. If a leader can't unite, lead through and around obstacles to a productive or at least reasonable end, what do we even need a leader for? Let the two sides fight it out until both are drained and nothing gets done. Meanwhile, the people suffer.
Phinephancy - We would lose 98% of those in office. According to most polls, as it turns out, losing 98% is what most people want!
the peach rose has left my side
I search for a thorn to prick
and remember her by
ideology.
How sad!
Let's get together again soon.
Candice I would settle for a good leader ... the great ones live in history and blood surrounds them.
The poem was not sad ... just playing with peach ... a modest outreach
Balanced budget vote for Mitt!
If you don't think we should have a budget vote for obama.
lol.. They all say that to get voted in then don't do a dam thing . Look what Bush did . And we are still suffering from his lie about god telling him to invade Iraq.I think it was more a flash back then a voice in his head . At least Obama is leading us out of it !
Leading us out of it?
That's rich! Obama has presided over the WORST recovery of all time.
And Romney is no Bush!
Rob, most current leaders are presiding over the worst recovery ever. America is not isolated in this.
How about just a budget? How many days has the government been operating without a budget?
Federal law requires the senate to produce a budget by April of each year.
Call Harry Reid and ask him why?
Truth is he is gutless and won't let his fellow dems put any skin in the game.
I can't help but think that what all the high paid pundits and reporters are saying is what my hubby's small group has been saying all along. They don't want Romney, they like Newt when his is angry and wish somebody else was running (since these good old boys are Floridians, I leave you to guess who). Some of this group say if Romney is the nominee, they will not vote in the general election - or even, take some Pepto and vote for Obama.
Now, before attacking, these guys are your average, blue collar men. Struggling to get by, and are as patriotic as anyone. They believe in God, country, SEC football and NASCAR. So, don't go putting them down as nobody's. They are the GOP base.
Ideology,
The conservatives all over the world must indeed drink from the same well.
Obama is required to produce a budget next week. He has already said it'll be late.
'Recovery summer '09!'
['Recovery summer '09!']
Woohoo...talking point #1
...you ROCK!
phinephancy,
If your husband's friends are truly the GOP base, I think they will vote for the GOP nominee in the end. None of us -- or at least few of us - are excited and inspired about the candidates. None of the candidates will be able to stir up the excitement and enthusiasm the President Obama did in '08. President Obama won't be able to stir that excitement either. There's too many disgruntled, too many disillusioned that want change.
When it comes down to it, I think people who give it some rational thought might come to the conclusion that we can't go on this way much longer.
President Obama's campaign slogan was going to be: "It could have been worse."
The GOP only has to convince voters that anyone is better than what we have now.
Sad. But true.
Naa, Mickey, my little monkey - you are my number one talking point.
But seriously Mickey, how you doin' tonight?
Cause I really, really care.
Candice,
I posted this above, but in the counties around me (including the county these gentlemen live in) only Romney won in 2 of them. 4 other counties went for Newt. I am not sure what to make of this, I can only offer up the information. (FYI, these counties I would consider "Old South")
My best bit of advice to the GOP is to offer something hopeful, say what the are for, not against. I know a lot of folks in the middle are tired of hearing both sides saying what they are and who they are against. If you get my meaning (I am a little tired and my sentence structure is failing a little! LOL)
phinephancy,
I agree. I believe we are all so tired of the negativity. Unfortunately that's what the press gets all in tizzy about so that's all we ever hear. Over and over again people speak out against negative ads. Yet negative ads still run. They still run because they work. Sad, really.
Yes, the GOP has to offer hope and solutions! The country needs to feel good again. I think there are positive messages out there. Only they don't make the news.
Did you hear Romney's speech after New Hampshire? That's the kind of speech I think we want and long to hear over and over again - that might get people excited and hopeful. All the bickering does get old.
Candice,
The hubby has become so tired of it the tv is barely on! And, he is planning a cruise for the general! Can't say I can complain about the cruise, though. (we will vote absentee)
phinephancy -
Your hubby is right to avoid the tv! Sometimes going on "news strike" is good for the attitude and good for the soul.
Our t.v is rarely on. If I didn't have to know what was going on in the world for work, there's many a time I'd just unplug the computer and pitch the newspaper, too.
Good for you! A cruise! I hope you'll be cruising somewhere wonderful! Be safe, though, and enjoy! Be sure to vote absentee! Vote early and often.....oh, that's just here in Chicago....
The appropriate headline is Mitt Romney is NOT the choice of a majority of Florida GOP.
Psst: SteveR - Obama got a whopping 32% in the Florida primary.
Deep thoughts my man, deep thought.
Might we all try and withhold judgement of where the GOP potential nominee stands until after super Tuesday. Just a hunch here, but I would imagine a few more states with their voters would like to have a bit of a say in the whole matter.
Od course, but in the meantime we can bust SteverR's balls for making silly comments.
Golly it's almost like he can't remember all the way back to 2008. Or is it just a total lack of perspective?
Oh well either way he sure is funny.
But, Spanky, in looking at various counties, he is basically right. Not trying to fight with you here, but just been checking things out locally. Romney could be in trouble in the general in Florida.
Well than Obama was doomed, based on his numbers, right Phine?
Cause he got creamed in FLA, straight up.
But come on - Obama is the bomb. No way he loses. Landslide in fact.
I know, cause I am a proud FR participant.
Spanky,
I was really trying to have a civil conversation with you. No snarking. Just telling you what has been going on at the grass roots here that the press doesn't report. Guess you would rather be, well, whatever it is you are trying to be. Sorry to have wasted both our time.
Is a 92% negative ads really an impressive victory, or is it really a victory of cumulative negative ad impressions? This is alonst as bad as Michelle Bachmann bellowing "Obama care" every 5 minutes.
It reminds me of Harold Wilson on the stump in Hyde Park where a heckler yelled "Trash" and Harold shot back "you're right-it's the very word I was searching for.our opponets claims are exacly that". A little while later he was hecked again and this time his opponent yelled "Rubbish", Mr Wlison replied, "Now that you've told me your name, what is your concern?"
What's impressive about a 92% negative campaign? Nothing.
Repblicans advertise Obama's name, and worse yet, link it to the fact that he cares.
But what does it do for them? All it does is drive home the point that Obama cares enough to take the heat and abuse for the health and well being of unfortunates-pregnat women, folks with cerrebral palsy, alzenhiemer's, diabetes and siclke cell anemia and cancerthat can't get health insurance.
Where's the Republican plan? there isn't any. And like they say in baseball: you can't beat something with nothing. And that why they deserve to lose.
The GOP has a plan. They just don't want us to know the truth about it. Quit listening to and watching the circus events that do nothing but distract people from the real issues they will not address. Obama in 2012... vote DFL and take back the house. They spent a lot of time & effort fighting for health care reform amid the worst recession in a long time against an arrogant group seeking continued hardship for the masses & tax benefits for the wealthy.
Romney/McDonnell 2012
Bob,
Good VP choice.
The BIG banks, financial con-institutions and corporations better rethink their tactics. All they did to prop up the Republicans they bought out is not working. They may actually have to behave themselves after Obama, the Senate & the House take control in 2013. Or pay the price for their bad behavior. After watching the GOP candidates go at it, and knowing there is much more to come, they must be wetting their pants and hyperventilating. They'd be wise to start doing the right thing now and cooperate with the current president of the United States instead of trying to undermine him like they have. Correct the wrong or pay the price.
Just4truth,
What are you smoking? The democrats will not keep control of the Senate and the Republicans will keep control of the House. The republicans will have control of congress which will force Obama (if he should be lucky enough to win) to the right and to start compromising and quit spreading the class warfare. Hopeful the people have had enough of Obama and the Democratic controlled Senate under Harry Reid.
The election is about the ECONOMY, JOBS and the national debt over over spending by this administration. Remember the Clinton battle cry "IT'S THE ECONOMY STUPID!!!"
Reality Check: You want to talk of facts then recognize Obama inherited the deficit and with it all the problems he had to respond to, which added to the deficit, yet the deficit isn't what is causing the major problems that the people are suffering with. The Republican / Tea Party constantly concentrates on the issues that are so very important to "the few" (1%) and tries to propagandize them to con the majority (99%) and get them excited, while they continually fail to address the major problems (just faulting, blocking, withholding bipartisanship and irresponsibly putting their political ambitions above all else). Solve the real problems (jobs, the economy,,,) and the deficit, government spending and creating "smaller government" all become realistically more achievable. We need to be wary of the con that is trying to return us to "more of the same", Bush-Cheney style, as there is what got us the problems
One of things I like about coming to a thread toward its end is the overall sense of the posts.
Well this thread is full of blame, gloom and doom from conservatives, middle of the roaders.
Romney just won his second primary , where is the celebration, where is the "he is a breath of fresh air" "he is the leader that can bring this country together, solve our problems, get the Congress to get to work."
even old Rob in MA is carping about President Obama ...
Hey Rob your solution is on his way, just about 1000 delegates left to win. Then the election will begin....
There's a LOT of campaigning to go! The Bible Belt, the Rust Belt, the West, etc.. all have yet to vote. South Carolina gives us a glimpse of how Romney will do with the evangelicals. Iowa shows the power of Santorum, hitting below the Rust Belt! I have no clue what the west wants! (probably Ron Paul). This is far from over!
In the meantime, the Attorney General, Eric Holder, is continuing to obstruct justice. Read the letter from Congress to Mr. Holder here:
