Is this Kosher? Gingrich accuses Romney of forcing Holocaust survivors to eat non-Kosher

Newt Gingrich has upped his attack on rival Mitt Romney, running robo calls in Florida now accusing rival him of forcing Holocaust survivors to eat non-Kosher food.

Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond confirms that the robo call is paid for by the campaign.

"As governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney vetoed a bill paying for Kosher foods for our seniors in nursing home -- Holocaust survivors, who for the first time were forced to eat non-kosher because Romney thought $5 was too much to pay for our grandparents to eat kosher," a man says in the robo call. "Where is Mitt Romney's compassion for our seniors? Tuesday, you can end Mitt Romney's hypocrisy on religious freedom with a vote for Newt Gingrich. Paid for by Newt 2012."

Asked about it today, Gingrich repeated three times, "I have no idea what you’re talking about." Yet Gingrich was quick to pounce on Romney during the last debate, when Romney professed not to know about a Spanish-language ad his campaign was running hitting Gingrich for implying Spanish was the "language of the ghetto."

Huffington Post first reported the ad.

The New York Post reported: “Mitt Romney is getting heat for a 2003 veto he cast as governor of Massachusetts to reject $600,000 in additional funds for poor Jewish nursing-home residents to get kosher meals. At the time, Romney said he nixed the funding of about $5 per day because it ‘unnecessarily’ would lead to an ‘increased rate for nursing facilities’ — even as kosher nursing homes were complaining that state-funding-formula changes could force them to close their kitchens.”

what's disgraceful about this! WORKING taxPAYERS do NOT get nursing home care under medicare yet medicaid rats get it free! now there is something to complain about! now they want kosher meals. how about a new cadillac too!

yes kosher meals ... what they have been eating all their lives ..except for the concentration camps. It would be interesting to know if other avenues were tried to reduce the cost of the kosher meal or it was just a slash with out thinking of other means. Honestly I think the new cadillac would more likely go to a politician with all the insider trading that goes on. but hey lets go after the poor elderly who most likely worked all their working years and payed taxes.

Jilted wrong my grandmother got care under SS the nursing home gets the check then puts a small portion into a personel account. And if your working then your insurance from your company is supposed to cover it until it runs out then medicaid takes over. So working americans get the same coverage.

Bernie -- it's too late for that. After Obama wins in November, the Republican Party better come up with something to run on other than we hate liberals, poor people, Hispanics, Blacks, Muslims, gays, atheist, Hollywood, the media, people in the northeast, and people on the west coast along with some economic policy other than tax cuts for the richest of the rich and a foreign policy other than bomb um. In not -- they will disappear by 2022.

Andy, that's ludicrous. If the debt goes there it will be because of the GOP's refusal to increase taxes on those who have for too long been getting breaks they don't need or deserve, for the cost of two unfunded wars started by the GOP (and Newt would have us on the ground in Iran in no time if he were elected), breaks for corporations earning billions yet paying no taxes, and a slew of other expensive unfunded programs like Medicare part D. I'd like to understand how the GOP had this epiphany about funding all new programs all of a sudden starting on Jan 29, 2009. Were the heck was all this when GW was in office?

This debt situation simply cannot be controlled or reigned in without an increase in revenue. Without that, we just might hit that debt mark. If you do a little research (I know facts are not exactly indigenous to conservatives) you would find that current deficits are fueled 4 times more by bush policies than Obama's.

So, bob, we continue with all of the useless programs and red tape we currently have? Anyway you want to look at it, from the right, or from the left, there will be hell to pay. Haven't found those facts, bob, are you another one of those libs that are blaming everything on Bush? Besides, our biggest debt yet has not yet come to fruition, that would be Obamacare......................I guess that is Bush's fault too? Just a little note, I left the Bush bandwagon during his second term, you are correct, he went way left on his constituents, that's why so many left him. The sad fact is, we don't have a conservative front runner, we have left of center moderates who claim to be conservative. They aren't conservative, they are Republicans, there is a HUGE difference.

Andy -- are you dumb enough to believe either Romney or Bush will actually do anything about the deficit? Do you remember what happened the last time Republicans controlled the White House and both sides of Congress? Need I remind you the greatest surplus of all times because the greatest deficit of all times -- in less than 3 years and without including most of the costs of two wars?

"are you another one of those libs that are blaming everything on Bush?"

Andy -- you do have a short memory. From 1976 to 1992 Republicans blamed Carter for everything wrong in the universe. Then from 1992 to 2008 they blamed Clinton for everything wrong in the universe. So using the example set by Republicans -- Democrats have 29 years to blame Bush just to pull even.

And yeah, I do remember, reminds of last 6 years of Democrat control, ludicrous! Remember, the ones that ignored any kind of budget talk? One of those wars, absolutely every American was behind, the other was a waste of time and money. Ya know what, you are right, neither Romney or Gingrich will do anything about the budget, just like the guy in office now, it will grow exponentially, so, I ask you, do we suffer now, or let our children do it for us? What a legacy American voters will leave.................

Yep, Charlie, I remember, that is why he lost this constituent. I was a Clinton supporter, didn't vote for him, but he did all right by me, and millions of other Americans, I do remember his congress to, do you? I'll have to say now, for me, this is no longer about an ideology, for the current right and left politicians have blended into one, and neither is good for the prosperity of the USA. I will have a write in in November, he will not win, he doesn't stand a chance, we have to stop somewhere, and no one on the ballot in November is willing to do that, my write in is, but the dependence on the government and the refusal to minimize their current life style (across the board) will not allow this candidate to win.

C'mon Charlie, yeah, it was 6 years, remember who does the legislating, it's not the president. And Bush isn't running, just thought you would like to know. What you and I are doing right now is exactly the cause of the situation we are in, I cling to conservative, it doesn't make me wrong, you cling to liberal(?) isn't doesn't make you wrong. Where is the middle? Where do we start to leave our finger pointing behind, and as Americans, come to a middle ground for the greater good of America? I'm not running and hiding over the issues, neither one of us has made a REAL valid point for which side is best, when do we get back to the survival of the country? The suffering is waiting in the wings, that is a fact, how do we come to middle ground to minimize that suffering? An intelligent answer would be appreciated.

Read up. You're believing Newt's revisionist history. Try a fact check site. The two largest surplus budgets occurred after he left the House following his highly hypocritical impeachment proceedings against Clinton while Newt was cheating on his own wife. Newt DID NOT force a balanced budget. The booming economy under Clinton ( it gave me the opportunity to retire at age 56) balanced the budget.

Charlie, c'mon! Really? The facts are there, why it happened, at 45, even your ideology makes me tired. I used to really fight for what I believed in, today, I don't know why I even fought, it's a two party race now, with almost no difference in ideology, but to break us. Our debt reached 100% of GDP last year......................is this really the way to go? Seriously, Charlie, we are not headed in the right direction, even you can see that. Paint the rosy picture you want to paint, the USA is not in a very good position right now.

C'mon, Charlie, I have too, you just haven't read my posts enough to see through your ideology. Bush isn't running, or have I missed something? Neither candidate in the GOP race will do anything for the deficit, the one in office will do the same. So, WE win how? This is an argument that leads us to a lose - lose situation....................so, what is your point in this question? Either way we lose. My whole point, which you have not addressed at all, is where do we win with the status quo? We don't. Your answer has been given, as it was previously, to a question that gives no winner, including our current scenario..........................what a waste of our time to even ask a question like that. They're freakin politicians, and you think either one is for the betterment of the country? How old are you again? Are you sure?

Your ideology is no better than mine, in fact, they both suck, and have gotten us nowhere but deeper in debt, a fact that can not be denied. Your answer was in 55.17, or can you not read between the lines? The direction of the country can not be continued, it is fiscally impossible, the person that started this direction is of no consequence, it simply can not be continued, fact, period.

I'm done, bob, and I don't really care anymore, the deficits are what they are, and have climbed when they did, history shows those times exactly, so check it again. It's time for America to stop the crap that is going on here, on this board, finger pointing................fuels the politicians, the massive gape between ideologies.....................fuels the politicians. As Americans, that is exactly what we have done for quite sometime, fueled politicians, and have sided with OUR side on what is to be construed as facts.......................when are we going to realize that we are wrong? It is our policies that have allowed DC's policies to go so far out of whack. You want fat cats, it's not the corporate individuals that you need to look at, it's the ones that you and I made fat in DC!

Don't care who did it, where the money was spent, the direction of America currently is of socialist/fascist bent, the definitions of both fit the current situation, and no, it didn't start here. It's reality, bob. Obama is not a socialist, his ideas have a socialist bent, but he is not socialist. The current direction of private America is completely corporatism, which is totally different from capitalism. The big question here is, who benefited from, it wasn't just corporations.......................it was our beloved politicians too, greed is blind across the political landscape, they chastise the rich while becoming rich themselves..........................what have we created?

This so-called feisty redhead is a disgusting pig and it is shameful that MSN does not outright ban her for continued bigoted comments exactly like this. Continually making fun of what others hold sacred does not make one "feisty" rather it makes one despicable.

The politics were not as dirty then, or should I say, we weren't privy to all that crap. I'm just a conservative who is expressing my opinion. I do not hate anybody, I just can not understand the Democratic ideology, the biggest debts we have had through out history were due to Democratic ideology, that is a fact. I'm not saying the left created the hole, they just dug it deeper. The same thing that is happening now.

Get over yourself, yourself. Maybe some should do a little intellectual logical review of what they hold sacred. Hard to believe this is the 21st century and we still have people so riled up about myths and then use it to become holier than thou, self righteous and indignant all the while showing little to no compassion and understanding of those who are different than they. Anyone can believe what they want, and I'm fine with that. But keep it in your home and your church and leave it the heck out of politics and schools. If that were the case those with differing opinions and beliefs would be more than happy to let it go and be what it is. But constantly throw it in others faces, and it's a comin' back at ya.

You are talking about the fringe, and I am no where near it. The biggest debt we incurred was after WWII, this current one is gaining on that, and yeah, I agree, Bush has a lot to do with our current debt load, but he didn't increase the debt, new debt, $4 trillion dollars in 3 short years, those weren't his policies that did that. Enough about that, the numbers and facts are there, we agree to disagree. This not the country I grew up in, I have my beliefs, other than political, I keep them to myself, and I'm starting to wonder about those political beliefs, all they have done is make DC fatter than it ever was meant to be. I will continue to be conservative in my beliefs, I will fight tooth and nail for anything that costs the American taxpayer more, I will fight for the belief that every American taxpayer needs to pay their fair share (across the board), I will fight for the needy, those that are truly needy, I will fight for those who gained success, and will disdain any chastising for their success, Americans need to fend for Americans, the country, and what she stands for...........................unfortunately, this is a philosophy that has died many years ago.
