Is this Kosher? Gingrich accuses Romney of forcing Holocaust survivors to eat non-Kosher

Newt Gingrich has upped his attack on rival Mitt Romney, running robo calls in Florida now accusing rival him of forcing Holocaust survivors to eat non-Kosher food.

Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond confirms that the robo call is paid for by the campaign.

"As governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney vetoed a bill paying for Kosher foods for our seniors in nursing home -- Holocaust survivors, who for the first time were forced to eat non-kosher because Romney thought $5 was too much to pay for our grandparents to eat kosher," a man says in the robo call. "Where is Mitt Romney's compassion for our seniors? Tuesday, you can end Mitt Romney's hypocrisy on religious freedom with a vote for Newt Gingrich. Paid for by Newt 2012."

Asked about it today, Gingrich repeated three times, "I have no idea what you’re talking about." Yet Gingrich was quick to pounce on Romney during the last debate, when Romney professed not to know about a Spanish-language ad his campaign was running hitting Gingrich for implying Spanish was the "language of the ghetto."

Huffington Post first reported the ad.

The New York Post reported: “Mitt Romney is getting heat for a 2003 veto he cast as governor of Massachusetts to reject $600,000 in additional funds for poor Jewish nursing-home residents to get kosher meals. At the time, Romney said he nixed the funding of about $5 per day because it ‘unnecessarily’ would lead to an ‘increased rate for nursing facilities’ — even as kosher nursing homes were complaining that state-funding-formula changes could force them to close their kitchens.”

Attacking your political rivals, our allowing a felon to screw poor people for a sweet land deal?

This was not a good call on Gingrich's part. This ploy will come back to haunt whoever wins the GOP nomination. It makes both candidates look mean spirited.

Lydia Linn - I certainly am not a Newt fan - but he does have a point This goes to Willard's lack of compassion for people of different cultures and his disregard for his family pet

I believe Willard is one cold fish - who cannot put himself in another person's position

If you know anything about the Jewish culture - it is a fact that they even use different pots and pans so foods will not intermingle

We are talking about senior citizens that are strongly imbedded in their faith

I worked in a Finance Division were some of my co-workers would bring their own food to board meetings and when they flew airlines provided them with Kosher food

So as tryte as this may seem to some people - it does go to Willard's overall character

Of course Newt has a point, but he has done far worse things himself and is advocating for more burdening of the poor, more sustenance for the 1%. Remember, Newt is always talking about Newt. He knows where the bodies are buried because he buried a lot of them himself.....Newt's real message is, there is no ethical, reliable candidate for the GOP.

Clinton was hammered for lying under oath. On the take? What he did is minute compared to what these a-holes do to us daily.

D.C. hates Newt, that is why I voted for him today. He would fix our country and would not care if he is liked. Romney strikes me as a guy who wants to be liked and those guys accomplish zilch in D.C.

Are you kidding? The guy that, as former Speaker of the House, threw a snit and shut down government, with disastrous results isn't a "repair man". Newt would "fix" the country the same way he'd fix a dog. Hmm, sounds like an appropriate nickname, "Newt".

Romney strikes me as a guy who wants to be liked and those guys accomplish zilch in D.C.

All politicians want to be liked, it's part of their nature. What's important is what they want more than being liked. Seeing Romneys fondness in firing people for his own profit, I'd say Romney loves money a lot more than "being liked", he'd gladly agree to being loathed by millions if it meant millions more in his bank account.

A critical fact is missing from this story: Is the nursing-home allegation true or not?

I'm no fan of robo-calls -- but if Romney did, in fact, veto a bill that would allow Jewish nursing-home residents to eat kosher food, I see no reason why that shouldn't be fair game his opponents to mention this in campaign messages.

Why wasn't Romney or his spokesman contacted to refute or comment on the claim made in the robo-call? Is this claim a lie? Or a distortion? I hate when news stories are missing key information like this!

A valid point MisterHippity. We don't know if Mitt was being a meanie-weanie, or if he had some appropriate justification for vetoing the bill. In actuality, kosher shouldn't be any more expensive than non-kosher, since it mostly involves limits on certain food items and rabbinical certification of the way the food is stored and prepared. Maybe an additional $600K for this purpose was out of line. If so, Mitt did his duty as governor of Mass. in vetoing it. As you have pointed out, we don't have the full facts on the basis of this story alone. I think it is far to say that the obvious thrust of the Gingrich ad is simply to make Mitt appear anti-semetic in a state with a large Jewish population.

Which I find weird, because the majority of them are registered Democrats and can't vote anyways. Unless Obama has been successful in pushing many away with his handling of Israel.

              #41.3 - Tue Jan 31, 2012 5:47 PM EST

I think it is couple of things. First, the "Jewish vote" (if there is such a thing) is always in play in the Sunshine State. I know a number of Jews who are Republicans. Second, George W. Bush was seen as a stalwart defender of Israel, so the notion that all Jews are Democrats isn't as strong as it might have been 10 years ago. Lastly, Newt is engaging in scortched-earth tactics in an all-out effort to bring down Romney, even if it pushes voters into the open arms of Obama. I think Newt would rather see Obama re-elected than any Republican other than him get the nomination.

While I support the president, I really feel for his detractors here. There should always be a viable alternative (or more than one!) to the ruling party. I want a sane, non-radical crop of Republicans to provide a fair, nuanced debate over the issues in our politics. Otherwise, many people will be stuck voting for Obama, who they don't support, simply because the GOP are nuttier.

Excuse me! Nursing homes get the SS checks of the residents and put a very small portion into an account for toiletries etc. The food and housing is certainly not free.

Btw, the holocaust survivors should've been fed kosher if they asked for it. and if it is true.

                        Reply#45 - Tue Jan 31, 2012 5:46 PM EST

Maybe a bit over the top there. I think it would be kind of the children and the state to help their parents get kosher food if that is their desire, but I'm not sure we have an obligation to just because they are holocaust survivors, after all, Germany should carry that burden. Also the nature of Kosher food in general leaves questions in my mind. I don't know why they could not get a rabbi to bless the food before it is served, for instance. We also don't know what the people were promised when they entered these homes.

What we do know, is that Newt is a horrible candidate for POTUS, unreliable, ego-centric, angry, undisciplined and widely disliked. Mitt is not distinguishing himself and his pandering to the far-right makes him look completely untrustworthy. Who knows what he'll do? Paul and Santorum just don't have what it takes either. So, here we are, Gary Johnson is the only National Candidate in the GOP with any marketability left. (I know, better look him up)

NC open heart - Obviously you don't know very much about Kosher food - it's just not a Rabbi blessing the food - if it's meat how is the animal killed, how is the food cooked - generally different pots and pans are used so various foods are not co-mingled

                        Why should Germany be involved?

These are American citizens, you would not serve pork or shellfish to a Muslim nor meat to a Vegetarian, or sugar ladened food to a Diabetic

Holocaust survivors are not the issue but that they are practicing Jews who abide by their religion

At one time Catholics couldn't eat meat on Fridays - would you serve them meatloaf?

This is about Romney - who doesn't care about other people's religion except his own
