Romney defends negative tone of Florida campaign

Republican presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney speaks with the media after a visit to his campaign headquarters on January 31, 2012 in Tampa, Florida. Romney has a double-digit lead going into the Florida primary today.

TAMPA, FL -- Mitt Romney on Tuesday defended the increasingly negative tenor of the GOP primary campaign, telling reporters that he would not "stand back" as other candidates attacked him.

"It would be wonderful if campaigns were all nothing but positive, but that's certainly not the reality," Romney said at a press availability outside his headquarters here. "President Obama will have a billion dollars or so to attack me. He's already begun. The AFL-CIO I understand spent about a million dollars in Florida attacking me. So there are going to be attacks, and the right thing to do will be to respond to them aggressively, clear up those things that have been said that are incorrect, and point out the weaknesses-- the differences between yourself and those that you're running against."

Romney also defended his own negative attack ads and rhetoric targeting former House Speaker Newt Gingrich with the political equivalent of the playground "he started it."

"You know, in South Carolina, we were vastly outspent with negative ads attacking me and we stood back and spoke about President Obama and suffered the consequence of that and also some good debates by speaker Gingrich. We came to Florida and Speaker Gingrich didn’t have two good debates. I did. and we responded to the attacks that were coming to us," Romney said.

That would seem to be a bizarre claim at first glance, given the Romney campaign's status as the richest of all the candidates. The campaign has spent millions throughout the campaign, as has Restore OUr Future, a pro-Romney super PAC. NBC News and ad-tracking firm Smart Media Group Delta, which tracks ad spending by political candidates, reported that Romney and Restore our Future outspent Gingrich and his Super PAC by more than $2 million dollars in South Carolina.

The Romney campaign explained the governor meant they were outspent versus all the other candidates' combined spending.

"I’ll tell you if you’re attacked I’m not going to just sit back I’m going to fight back and fight back hard. I did note that in the Suffolk University poll they asked the people in Florida who has run the most negative campaign in Florida and they said Newt Gingrich," Romney said, referencing a poll which showed 37% of Floridians felt Gingrich ran the most negative campaign, compared to Romney's 31 percent. "He really can’t whine about negative campaigning when he launched a very negative campaign in South Carolina and when the people here in Florida looked at the different campaigns and concluded his was the most negative."

Romney certainly has fought back -- over the airwaves, on the stump and with his surrogates.

Romney's campaign and Restore our Future outspent Gingrich and his allied Super PAC Winning our Future on advertising by nearly a 4-1 margin here, with team Romney spending $15.9 million to team Gingrich's $4 million. Romney also spent the better part of the last two days opening every campaign event by attacking Gingrich, and several of his congressional endorsers have shadowed the former speaker's campaign events, where they've occasionally clashed with Gingrich staffers in what Romney advisers refer to as a "truth squad" operation.

With a spate of recent polls showing Romney expected to coast to victory here tonight, he conceded today he will soon need to pivot his focus back to President Obama, but also left no doubt he'd be keeping up the pressure on Gingrich going forward.

"I would like to spend more of our time focusing on President Obama. That's ultimately what's going to be essential to taking back the White House," Romney said. "But I'm not going to stand back and allow another candidate to define me. [Gingrich's] comments most recently attacking me have been really quite sad and I think painfully revealing about the speaker and what he's willing to say and do to try to take the nomination. So I just can't stand back and let him say those things about me without responding."

Whatever you do Willard...

For the love of God - please don't sing again!

Not only did your rendition of 'America the Beautiful' sound like a cat in heat - it caused my ears to bleed!

Many thanks in advance for your cooperation!

PS: Compare Willard's 'hot mess' to President Obama crooning, "Let's Stay Together"...

Actually, Willard all you do is focus on President Obama because you are afraid your vulture capitalism will expose you.

As you right wing nut jobs say-- " He has no record of his own to run on"!!! Just for the record, that's Willard Mitt Romney.

Seems Noot is in hot water over the use of "Eye of the Tiger"... his defense is that "Eye of the Newt" is out of print.

What is it with Conservatives and intellectual property? Maybe it's just that they're not that "intellectual"?

Conservatism is a mental illness, after all.

Well, I knew sooner or later someone would come up with the Rocky III story.

So damn predictable.

This is always nothing more than an irrelevant act trying to become relevant again.

They should all take Kid Rock's philosophy when Romney asked him if he could use Born Free:

"He and anyone else who wants to use my song do not need my permission. I said he could use it and I would say the same for any other candidate. I have to have a little faith that every candidate feels like he or she can help this country. Without faith, we got nothing. I make music to have it be heard.

Of course, Kid Rock is not an old irrelevant singer.....

How convenient that Mr. Romney forgot that it was he who went all out negative in Iowa when Newt led the polls. Remember, at that time Newt had said he would run a positive campaign until he found out that against Romney, that wasn't going to be possible.

Mitt Romney singing America the Beautiful isn't likely to impact music sales. Really, bad.

Defending the negative tone? Teapublicans, get something straight -- In 2008 the president and Clinton got ugly, but it was about policy, for example who voted for the Iraq war. What Gingrich and Romney are getting ugly about is who is the bigger crook -- Very telling about where the GOP/TP is at (in the toilet).

Rob, apparently you have not bothered to figure up how much money the GOP blew over 8 years. President Obama hasn't wasted money except to fight the two wars HE didn't start. You really need to look at your own conservative politicians before throwing stones at President Obama and democrats. I'd suggest you start with Ronald Reagan's deficit and debt, work your way to Bush 41 and then take a good hard look at Bush 43.

It's ashame that Obama's only talent is to sing Al Greene songs. CBO released some interesting news today. Unemployment is really at 10% and of course the debt....

To put this in some perspective, by 2017, annual interest payments on the debt would begin to rival and soon exceed what Washington will be spending on Medicaid, the state-federal healthcare program for the poor and disabled.

In case you haven't noticed, the gap between rich and poor has steadily widened in the last 30 years...

It bothers 88% of the people in the USA that this office is being bought by the highest bidder

Now this has figures in it. Is the 88% an opinion, or a fact? It would stand to reason that only 12% of people aren't bothered by it. I wonder who those 12% represent. Numbers don't seem quite right. Not a challenge, but my opinion.

If Mr Romney wants to fight...He might start by encouraging his 5 courageous boys to volunteer for military service or the Peace Corps since he avoided the draft thru "special ministerial exemptions" in the 60's.

I always wondered why this guy touts his record with Staples. A company that mostly sells goods manufactured in China. Just sayin!

Oh don't go there....the far left are the last ones who'd actually fight for this country! Until they make up the majority of the military (and they're not even close) they can't point fingers at anyone--rich or poor. They're too busy tearing it apart....occupiers at heart! BTW, if Obama does get back into office, the first thing he'll be facing is confronting Iran in the Persian Gulf....so get used to war, even the spineless left is going to have to deal with it....

              =====

You've been "attacking" the President since January 2009 and yet you 'act' like you're only in a response mode? Give me a break.

Although the validity of your claim isn't certain, but you sound a little salty that the President "...will have a billion dollars..." I thought that is how the game was played? Flip floppin on that too I see.

Liberals will always say that Obama is better than Bush. Hell, they've been saying it for at least 10 years now. One thing I am very happy about is... it won't be the democrats deciding the election this year.

If you mean the millions that are unemployed as a result of the 2nd largest economic crash in the history of the country that occurred under Bush, they likely will not take exception with my opinion. Poll after poll shows Americans blame the crash on Bush, not Obama.

I have been in Scotland for almost three weeks now. The wife and I are god-parents to my nephew's daughter. We see a lot of each other (except when I am on the road, of course).

Mrs. SoCal reports nephew and family were over for dinner the other night. TV was on, and Mr. Romney appeared on the screen. My two year old god-daughter dropped her toy, pointed at the screen, and shouted "Nino!!!" - Nino the spanish (we speak a lot of that in SoCal) term for god-father.

                  Yikes!

                    CM,

Good point, and amusing! Astute indeed!

Though it adds nothing to my story perhaps I should have been more specific for the sake of the linguistically inclined amongst us. We speak a lot of L.A. Spanish in SoCal. The use of nino and nina are colloquial terms of affection for adult relatives, godparents, etc. Note the absence of the tilde in both words.

Part of the reason my god-daughter and get along so well is that often Nino is just a big niño!

The beauty of it is that the Obama campaign can just run ads of Mitt stating his various positions on issues and ask which Mitt is running in 2012. Of course, his Super PAC may run some negative ads, but thanks to the Republican-appointed majority of the Roberts Supreme Court, President Obama can't exercise any control over any Super PACs.

Mark in SoCal, That is an interesting question. I guess only time will tell. I sincerely hope that something can be done about campaign finance reform. I would love to see public financing with serious spending caps and force candidates to spend 5X the amount of time with constituents as they do with lobbyists.

Mark--conventional wisdom would be that most of the super-wealthy will contribute to Republican PACs while a few super-wealthy and the unions will contribute to the Democratic PACs. Having seen the kind of money that has been spent to date, I'm thinking that the majority of the money will go to the Republicans since they have more super-wealthy.

And let's not forget that the Super PACs can also be contributing to state and local races. That is truly frightening to me.

Wow, this has got to be the biggest waste of time and taxpayer money I've heard about in a while. I really thought this birther nonsense stopped when he actually released his birth certificate. It's one thing to disapprove of his policies and politics but do we have to drag this tired dog out of the shed yet again? And yes, he is a "natural citizen" for all those who want to bring up the fact that his father was born in Kenya so he has to leave office immediately.

Currently, Title 8 of the U.S. Code fills in the gaps left by the Constitution. Section 1401 defines the following as people who are "citizens of the United States at birth:"

                            • Anyone born inside the United States *
                            • Any Indian or Eskimo born in the United States, provided being a citizen of the U.S. does not impair the person's status as a citizen of the tribe
                            • Any one born outside the United States, both of whose parents are citizens of the U.S., as long as one parent has lived in the U.S.
                            • Any one born outside the United States, if one parent is a citizen and lived in the U.S. for at least one year and the other parent is a U.S. national
                            • Any one born in a U.S. possession, if one parent is a citizen and lived in the U.S. for at least one year
                            • Any one found in the U.S. under the age of five, whose parentage cannot be determined, as long as proof of non-citizenship is not provided by age 21
                            • Any one born outside the United States, if one parent is an alien and as long as the other parent is a citizen of the U.S. who lived in the U.S. for at least five years (with military and diplomatic service included in this time)
                            • A final, historical condition: a person born before 5/24/1934 of an alien father and a U.S. citizen mother who has lived in the U.S.

                            * There is an exception in the law — the person must be "subject to the jurisdiction" of the United States. This would exempt the child of a diplomat, for example, from this provision.

Anyone falling into these categories is considered natural-born, and is eligible to run for President or Vice President. These provisions allow the children of military families to be considered natural-born, for example.

Is that simple enough for you?

Neither of his parents were born in the U.S. and nobody objected to his name being on the ballot. But there is a difference between Obama and Dukakis that seems to get conservatives really angry and I just can't put my finger on what it is. Can anybody help me with this one?

“This information was published without the DOH or newspaper editors confirming the actual location of the birth in any hospital or location in Hawaii. Did you miss the larger point I was making? The items pertaining to his father don't actually matter concerning his eligibility to be POTUS. He was born in the United States. That makes his eligible.

Ryan---it will never be simple enough for them. Nor for people like Jan Brewer, who think it is OK to wag her finger at the President. Nor for someone shouting "you lie" at the SOTU. Nor for the head of the RNC to compare the President of the United States to the disgraced captain of the Italian cruise ship who is facing criminal charges. We can speculate on their motivation but the bottom line is a disrespect for both the person and the office of the Presidency and it is shameful.

More nonsense from the Queen of birther nonsense, Orly Tates, and her birther conspiracy friends.

Anyone can file a lawsuit for any reason, though frivolous lawsuits are usually thrown out early - as the rest of the birther lawsuits have been. But, undeterred, they kept filing until they found a far right judge that was willing to risk public humiliation to keep the trial going. Doesn't mean they're going to win, and even if the judge was daft enough to accept hearsay evidence and reject actual Government documents and find for the plaintiffs, it would quickly be overturned on appeal.

Romney must be daft. The AFL-CIO spends $1 million, so he counters with $15 million. Thank god this isn't a game of dodge ball. I'd hate to think what he would use. And please explain where the claim that Obama will spend $1 billion comes from? As I recall, it was an estimate of what his campaign would need just to stay close to even with the GOP. Given that outside groups are planning to spend $100 million just to save Scott Walker's sorry ass in Wisconsin, I shudder to think what the oligarchs will spend on behalf of Romney. And the sad thing is - it's just goes back into many of their own pockets since they own the stations, newspapers and production facilities.

Well, at least we know which road he's taking come time to face Obama.

Romney defends negative tone of Florida campaign

                                  "I hit him back first!"

Romney also defended his own negative attack ads and rhetoric targeting former House Speaker Newt Gingrich with the political equivalent of the playground "he started it."

Great, so the GOP nomination boils down to a couple of 6-year-olds fighting in the sandbox.

As long as you dish it out you should be willing to take it.

Keep it going. This is fun.

He lies, he smears, he sheds big tears. the poor nit-Mitt. He needs to clean up his own act, but perhaps an angel came down to him and said, The sins you commit, Mitt, will only help you win, so don't consider it as sin. Fuss about those that trespass against you, the same folks you screw, and spout baloney. I'll cover for you or I'm not Moroni.

SO now people are going to start talking birth-certificates and does he have the right to be President because his father as kenyan huh??!!! Even thought people are having problems getting and keeping jobs and trying to get there lives back on track, this is what's going to be in the news. The depths these people will go to take down the President amazes me. Even if the judge said it's credible it just kills me that a person brings a case up in the state of Georgia just to smear this man and that's real petty to me. As i always say this is my opinion. On to Mr. Romney, again this is what he needs to do, I can't knock him for taking it to Newt once he realized that Gingrich was trying to punch him in the mouth "pious baloney" is the best quote I've heard in the campaign, so he should show his ability to fight back. This is politics ladies and gentlemen and we're not talking about governorship of a state, we're talking about becoming the leader of the free world. Just keep up the good work fellas and let us sit back and watch a good battle.

Romney's SuperPACs started the negative ads in Iowa. So he is being disingenuous again. And he is right, he will not let anybody define him. He is the candidate of change as McCain satirically noted in a 2008 debate. Try to pin Romney down and he'll just point to his alternate ego with exactly the opposite position. As for the billion bucks that will come down on him in the General Election, he can count on it. He bashes Obama every day about losing jobs and creating deficits. Obama has done neither. Romney is getting pretty good at dishing it out against a very vulnerable opponent. But Romney is a walking target. And his double talk about Massachussetts' healthcare plan is comical. It's virtually the same as the new federal healthcare benefit. So when he complains about the scourge of Obamacare and how it will increase the cost of healthcare, he condemns his own program. And I think the evil of his SuperPACs doing all the dirty work will be obvious by the Fall. Apparently, Romney is not a nice guy.

"Hey! Hey! Ho! Ho! The Party Of NO has got to GO!!" "Romulian Romney" is economically very negative for the Middle Class, the Working Poor, the elderly, and the disabled.

ROMNEY NEEDS TO LET AMERICA SEE WHAT HE'S REALLY BEEN UP TO FOR THE LAST 6 YEARS ON HIS TAX FORMS !!!!!!!!!!!!! then watch him self destruct with the american voters. no use for him to keep pretending that he's showed us the tax information america has been asking for. these gullible and desperate republican conservative tea partiers wants to hide romney's past dealings. but there are smart people out there ,that are seeing right through the smoke and mirrors. they can run from it, but time will not let it hide. REPUBLICAN HIPOCRITS HAVE A MEAN SURPRISE AWAITING THEIR ANGEL OF LIGHT. HIS OWN DAD SAID ONE YEAR OF TAX EXPOSURE ,IS ONLY A WAY TO HIDE THE TRUTH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is a thought. Rather than continue to spend the millions and millions of dollars for this election campaign, why don't we take that money and pay down the debt!!!! oh, wait, that's right the republicans refuse to raise taxes on the rich!!! This is the problem we have. millions can be spent on campaigns, the middle class can bail out banks who pay millions to lobby congress and what does the middle class get; absolutly screwed!!! Fire Congress
