Huntsman dad propped up Super PAC, gave almost $2 million

Jon Huntsman's father Jon M. Huntsman Sr. gave Our Destiny PAC, the Super PAC supporting his son's candidacy, a total of about $1.9 million of $2.7 million contributed to the PAC since October, according to a new FEC report.

That accounts for 70 percent of all the money the Super PAC received.

Jon M. Huntsman contributed $1,887,039.90 of the entire $2,680,289.90 that the PAC received. His final donation came 13 days before the New Hampshire primary, ahead of the last minute ad buys made on New Hampshire's WMUR.

IF THE GOP WANTS TO WIN THIS ELECTION, THEY'D BETTER QUIT ARGUING AMONGST THEMSELVES AND START CREATING AND PROMOTING U.S. ECONOMIC "FAILURE" AGAIN....AND SOON!!

By Don Lee, Los Angeles Times

Reporting from Washington—

The Federal Reserve's latest report on the nation's regional economies showed that the pace of activity around the country is picking up, with the notable exception of the housing market.

The Fed report, dubbed the beige book, confirmed that consumer spending was strong at the end of last year, with most parts of the country indicating significant gains in holiday sales.

The central bank's New York district described the retail activity as "brisk," and Dallas called it "robust." Travel and tourism also performed solidly in most areas at year's end, according to a summary of economic conditions made by the Fed's 12 bank districts and released Wednesday.

Manufacturing continued its "steady overall expansion," the report said.

Heavy-equipment production and steel led the pack as demand got a good lift from resurgent activity in energy, farming and auto manufacturing. There also was strong demand for computers and electronic parts.

The service-producing part of the economy strengthened as well.

Professional services, technology and healthcare providers grew in different parts of the country. "Lending activity edged up overall," the report said, as companies sought more loans.

Although some districts reported gains in home sales from a year earlier, as well as a pickup in apartment construction, on the whole residential real estate markets remained at "very low levels" throughout the U.S. but housing is a lagging indicator and should improve.

The beige book described the San Francisco district, which includes California and eight other Western states, as growing at a "moderate pace" from late November to the end of the year, the period covered by the report.

The report noted significant pay increases for workers with specialized skills in certain manufacturing and technology sectors.

The Fed's report comes on the heels of solid job gains reported for December and other data suggesting that the economy entered the year with increasing momentum.

The beige book is an anecdotal snapshot of the economy based on reports from the district banks and interviews with key businesses, economists and market experts. The book is issued eight times a year.

Sugar Daddy is meaningless in an election with Romney. Romney's wealth is greater than all presidents combined going back to Nixon...times 2!

What's really, really sad is to think that all the millions and millions could be divided up and given to every person over the age of 50 with the requirement to retire and buy a home if they don't already own one. This would open up jobs to younger workers, inject the economy starting with the housing industry, and alleviate government resources for unemployment and other safety nets currently under strain.

So all you 1%ers out there, how about holding a convention like you did in Aspen, only this time pledge to make a real difference and use your vast wealth to do good. THEN I would vote for you, Romney or Huntsman or any of the rest of the 1% candidates. Otherwise, what a waste, what a friggin' shameful waste!

1.8 million food on food stamps while Willard "Mitt" Romney puts his money in Swiss bank accounts and Bahamanian tax avoidance investments. What a true patriot!!! Mitt didn't even want to pay for Seal Team Six.....I guess he figured the rest of us worker bees could pick up the tab for him....Wait until we all find out that the thousands of jobs he "created" at Sports Authority and Staples don't even pay enough to get people above the poverty line. That's why they need food stamps....

"In the 1960s Huntsman Sr. partnered with Dow Chemical (DOW, Fortune 500) to produce Styrofoam egg containers. Dow lost interest in the business plan, but Huntsman saw a big future in packaging for an emerging fast-food industry. Burger King and McDonald's were their biggest customers...."

A. REASONS WHY POLYSTYRENE FOAM IS BAD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AND HUMAN HEALTH.

1. Toxic chemicals leach out of these products into the food that they contain. These chemicals threaten human health and reproductive systems.

2. These products are made with petroleum, a non-sustainable, heavily polluting and disappearing commodity.

3. The product does not biodegrade. It crumbles into fragments that have no expiration date.

3. A certain percentage of product will be dumped in the environment, persisting on land indefinitely as litter and breaking up into pieces that choke and clog animal digestive systems in waterways.

4. The product takes up more space in landfills than does paper and eventually will re-enter the environment when landfills are breached by water or mechanical forces.

5. Foam recycling is a public relations stunt, promoted by the chemical industries that manufacture it. This is done in highly centralized, distant facilities using complex chemical processes and expends far more energy than is ever saved by recycling the material.

B. UNBLEACHED PAPER BIODEGRADES AND ITS USE AVOIDS ALL OF THE ABOVE PROBLEMS.

The various components of Styrofoam are known to cause health problems. Styrene, for instance, is a common concern with Styrofoam food containers where it is released into food when it is heated and could have toxic effects when consumed. Dr. Weil of the Weil Foundation states that people who are constantly exposed to Styrene in large quantities are known to exhibit skin and eye irritation, gastrointestinal problems, headaches, fatigue or problems with kidney functions.

No wonder GOP candidates are wanting to eliminate government regulation of industry....

It was big news years ago when McDonalds moved some of its sandwiches out of their trademark foam clamshells and into paper wrappers. The environment was proclaimed the winner and we all went back to saying, "Yes, I'll have fries with that."

But foam food containers—or more properly, polystyrene food containers—did not go away. Today they are still going strong in both food and non-food applications.

Polystyrene clearly has many non-food uses, but this article will focus on the implications of using polystyrene in food and beverage applications. Most importantly, we will talk about how styrene—the "monomer" form of polystyrene—can migrate into your food and beverages from polystyrene food containers.

STYRENE MIGRATION FROM FOAM CUPS AND CONTAINERS

The migration of styrene from a polystyrene cup into the beverage it contains has been observed to be as high as 0.025% for a single use. That may seem like a rather low number, until you work it this way: If you drink beverages from polystyrene cups four times a day for three years, you may have consumed about one foam cup's worth of styrene along with your beverages. Mmm.... chem-i-callyyyy...

Styrene migration has been shown to be partially dependent on the fat content of the food in the polystyrene cups/containers—the higher the fat content, the higher the migration into the food. Entrees, soups, or beverages that are higher in fat (like a bowl of three-cheese chili or tall cupful of Triple-Cream Frappa-Mocha Java Delight) will suck more of the styrene out of the polystyrene container than, say, water. Some compounds found in beverages, like alcohol or the acids in "tea with lemon," may also raise the styrene migration rate.

When it comes to more solid food, the meat or cheese you buy from the market on a clear-plastic-wrapped polystyrene tray may be picking up styrene from the foam container. Styrene also appears to migrate more quickly when foods or drinks are hot.

HEALTH EFFECTS OF STYRENE

Studies suggest that styrene mimics estrogen in the body and can therefore disrupt normal hormone functions, possibly contributing to thyroid problems, menstrual irregularities, and other hormone-related problems, as well as breast cancer and prostate cancer. The estrogenicity of styrene is thought to be comparable to that of Bisphenol A, another potent estrogen mimic from the world of plastics.

Long-term exposure to small quantities of styrene is also suspected of causing:

  • low platelet counts or hemoglobin values;
  • chromosomal and lymphatic abnormalities;
  • neurotoxic effects due to accumulation of styrene in the tissues of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves, resulting in fatigue, nervousness, difficulty sleeping, and other acute or chronic health problems associated with the nervous system.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer lists styrene as a possible human carcinogen, though this conclusion is primarily based on studies of workers in styrene-related chemical plants. The Vallombrosa Consensus Statement on Environmental Contaminants and Human Fertility Compromise includes styrene on its list of contaminants of possible concern, noting that even weak estrogen mimics can combine with other such chemicals to have negative effects even when the chemicals are individually present at levels that would have no impact.

Romney's wealth is twice as much as 8 previous presidents wealth. Wouldn't you just know it Romney is pushing for tax cuts for himself as if he doesn't have enough money already. Not only that Romney wants to increase your taxes to pay for more tax cuts for himself.

Meanwhile Romney has signed on the Ryan plan which kills medicare with his voucher plan. Then he goes to Florida and promises to protect medicare and social security. Well he also promised to protect a woman's right to choose and you know he now is pushing to overturn Roe v Wade and wants to push Catholic doctrine of no birth control on the entire nation.

You really think he will keep his word to the seniors any more than he kept his word to women?

Be sure and vote for Gingrich to annoy us liberals.

Why is this even a story on FR, since Huntsman is no longer running. It has always been well known that the Huntsman family had around a billion dollars and the father was willing to finance his son's campaign. Jon knew he wasn't going to get the nomination and declined his fathers money.

I could have supported Huntsman and considered him more electable than Romney.

sfcret,

This story indicates the power that the wealthy, and the corporations that they run, have in the political process, and the fact that they have the resources to dismantle government regulations on themselves and their companies to the point where they put the rest of us in danger. SEE MY POST ABOVE.

The fact that Jon Huntsman is no longer in the contest, does not preclude his family business from investing their profits in purchasing another candidate that will protect their interests. Their interests include manufacturing dangerous chemicals and leaching them into our food supply....get it?

Anyone who buys the garbage in most of the advertisements with out checking them out shouldn't be allowed to vote.

    MkeMike,

I don't happen to have a problem with you comments in your post. Tax avoidance is a condition of the tax laws that Congress writes for those who probably contribute to their re-election funds. If the leadership wants to even the playing field for everyone, why not have a simple tax rate for everyone - to include who currently pay no taxes?

As for commenting on the wage earners, why are you so envious of those who takes risks and earn income? Shouldn't we all strive to be in that 1% category?

And when you are critical of millionaires, are you critical of just those Republican millionaires, or is it OK for those Democratic millionaires to support the current Progressive Runp-Ranger in charge?

I can think of many much better things to do with all that money than to waste it on a campaign that had no chance of success from the beginning. There are children going without meals in this country, the richest in the world, there are senior citizens who must do without medication because they simply can't afford it. There are people who once were living the American Dream of home ownership, a good job, a couple of cars, quality food on the table etc. who are now receiving food stamps living in a dingy appartment and using one old beat up car to get around because they lost their jobs a few years ago. The way those rich guys are throwing their money around it reminds me of a feudal king who comes into a village throwing coins to the peasants and gets great joy in watching them scramble to pick up as many as they can.

        Yep MkeMike,

I actually have no issue with a story on how ALL candidates, to include Obama, channel their personal funds. And I would also love to see MSNBC do an expose' on the Obama background. It's impossible to see any information on him prior to Chicago since he has spent millions to seal any background records.

Why shouldn't anyone take advantage of the tax laws written by members of Congress? Perhaps you should look into various proposals written by various members that would tax ALL citizens, not just those who earn wages. With a reorganization of the tax laws, fairness can be found, which should make liberals happy since fairness is a part of Progressive thoughts. Take taxes from all classes of individuals not just those who earn top dollar for the risk they take.

Now who paid the greater dollar in taxes, Buffett at his tax rate, or his secretary at her 35% ratge?

Tell me MkeMike, why is it the role of government to be big and take the country out of the depression we are in?Is big gov. better than one who is fiscal?

          Reply#15 - Wed Feb 1, 2012 2:26 PM EST

          winemaker,

While Romney SAYS that he wants to help America and Americans, he DOES what any unpatriotic, greedy, immorally wealthy GOP candidate would do....he sends his money to Swiss bank accounts and Bahama tax avoidance investments. He does this why we are fighting two wars, started by a Republican President, for which funding was never approved by US taxpayers. He also sends his investments overseas, while we are in the midst of the worst financial and banking meltdown in world history, caused by a Republican party that refused to regulate the banking and investment industry.

US government expenditures represent less than 1/5 of our total GDP. We pay less taxes than most countries in the civilized world. Our government is not that big. While it isn't necessary for our government to take us out of the depression, it is useful that they supply a safety net for average Americans, and use what tools they do have to prime the pump and get things rolling again.

Wealthy people should pay more in taxes and a higher tax rate, than poorer people. We used to have a progressive tax system, which means that each additional dollar earned is taxed at a higher rate than the previous dollar. This encouraged people to earn more to have more, and work harder because marignally, each additional dollar was worth a tiny bit less. Since Reagan, that is not the case. Warren Buffet pays a lower rate than his secretary, who still probably makes about $100,000 per year. If you wish to return to the days where the wealthy make the rules and pay only what they wish, then vote GOP and let them continue to drain the US Treasury and siphon the extra money they get to keep to banks in Switzerland, Dubai, and the Bahamas. If you want a fair progressive tax system, then don't vote GOP.
