Subscribe to RSSIn a warning sign for Mitt Romney that the long GOP primary fight may be hurting his image with the general electorate, the latest NBC/Wall Street Journal poll finds that independent voters have sharply soured on the Republican frontrunner in the last month.
In fact, Romney’s negative ratings with independents have jumped 13 points since December.
Last month, Romney’s favorable/unfavorable split with independents was 21 percent to 29 percent. In November, 22 percent of indies viewed him in a negative light compared to 21 percent who gave him a thumbs up in the NBC/WSJ poll.
But in the latest poll, released last week, Romney’s positive score was essentially unchanged at 22%. His negative score, however, jumped to 42 percent with independents, his highest recorded negative rating in the poll with the crucial voting bloc.
The cause could be the race's recent tough rhetoric and widely-viewed debates since the early voting contests began in Iowa and New Hampshire at the beginning of this year. The GOP race has come into sharper focus for a wider electorate, curious about the candidates – and wondering who will emerge to face President Barack Obama in an election year in which the country’s economic situation is uncertain.
Since the last poll was conducted, Romney won, then lost Iowa narrowly; he won decidedly in New Hampshire then lost decisively in South Carolina; and there have been eight nationally televised debates, including two in the run up to this contentious GOP primary fight in Florida.
Romney seems on track to win by a solid margin in Florida tomorrow, but as Marist polling Director Lee Miringoff said, "If Romney locks up the nomination any time soon, he's going to have to pivot quickly to win back independents."

Let's get real here. Gingrich's past as an immoral, aldulterer, and failed politician of the past is very relevant to a future potential president...not that it will matter to die hard Republicans anyway. Anyone that thinks we should be investing in a moon base in today's economic slump should have his head examined. I would love to see Obama debate this overconfident has been, but it's not going to happen because Romney will beat him. Regardless, the Republicans don't have anyone without major flaws to attack so Obama will get another 4 years of the party of "No". It's a lose/lose scenario.
Income inequality will be at the center of the next election. Romney the corporate raider has no credibility on job creation. Romney the poster child for the richest 1% that paid an effective tax rate of only 13.9% has no credibility on fair taxation. Romney the "corporations are people" advocate has no credibility on rulings like Citizen's United, regulation of Wall Street, and putting an end to corporate welfare.
The Do Nothing obstructionist GOPers think they can use the poor economy to win in 2012, but most voters know the poor economy is because of the failed policies of the Republican Party. Add to that the crazy-arse overreach at the state level (and Birthers trying to keep President Obama off the ballot in Georgia, again -- really?!), and pitiful presidential candidates, good luck with that Teapublican douche-bags.
We need to reelect President Obama and give him a congress that will work with him. Obama/Biden - 2012 -- Amen!

This is the critical sector of the electorate that will reelect President Obama. Mitt offers nothing but sacrifice and hardship for the middle class and the poor, and fabulous tax breaks for the wealthy.
Romney needs to be interrogated about his religion and polygamy, his ancestors going to Mexico to evade the laws of the land (returning only because of Poncho Villa, not love for the US), women's rights, racism against blacks clear until 1978 (1978!), etc., and ALL this is only about religion.
Not just the unethical and often ruthless profiting by Bain, which included sticking the taxpayers for pension plans, but also Bain lobbying to keep a 15% tax rate on capital gains -- All of which Romney still profits from handsomely.
Remember how Ross Perot looked good on the surface? Then we realized what a wacky nut the guy was? This applies to Romney and Gingrich (and even more than Ron Paul despite what the GOP establishment would have folks believe). I just want to know why "nuts" including Herman Cain, Donald Trump, and the rest of the clown show end up with so much power and money, while sane people with real merit have had their lives destroyed by the likes of these charlatans.
Save our nation from the hands of the GOP/TP and throw all of the Teapublicans out--and all the incompetent CEOs while we're at it. May the American workforce regain it's proper place in this country, the American workforce that is the real engine of our economy and prosperity.

My postal vote will be for Obama or Romney. I'm happy with whoever the Bildebergers and Bernanke want. Being originally from Florida, I know its affluence and I know the money is going with Romney. There is no choice.
It's going to be better in his second term, jerry. He won't need to worry about re-election then, and he's older and wiser regarding his impossible ideal of bi-partisanship in Congress. Add to it that the American public has had their eyes opened by the Republican's circus-like nomination process, and it's going to be a better situation the second time around.
In his second term, Mr. Obama will be able to carry out his initiatives. After his State of the Union Address, a CBS poll found that 91% of Americans agree with his ideas for the country.
The haters won't go away, but people who are truly open-minded, people who truly want what is best for this country and for our future, will exist in large enough numbers for us to make some real progress in Mr. Obama's second term.
TruePatriot, I disagree with this part of your comment. I don't believe Romney should be held accountable for the tenets of his religion or for what his ancestors did. He was born a Mormon. Most people are born and raised into a religion over which they have no say.
I do think we need to evaluate a candidate for how his/her religion might influence policy. Separation of Church and State must remain inviolable in this country.
With this, I totally agree. When Congress tried to reform the tax law, Bain's lobbyists were leading the fight to keep the 15% tax rate in place for people like Romney.
We Americans need to be more educated, more open-minded, and more involved in the political process. Otherwise, we let this happen to ourselves.

The fact that one of these candidates could actually become president, despite peoples obvious lack of trust in these candidates, goes to show you how money can get you whatever you want in this country.
The problem with democrats (the ones in office, not the morally sound good person that is voting democrat), is that even with government regulation to prevent personal greed from impacting U.S. citizens, most government officials are bad greedy people anyway. Government is corrupted.

The problem for Obama is that the middle class can't exist without investment from the 1% to create jobs. Government can't create a middle class, only private industry can. Look at the USSR, there was no middle class there, look at China prior to them allowing one percenters to invest in their country and create jobs, look at Europe where the policies that Obama wants to duplicate have virutally destroyed the middle class and are in the process of creating universal poverty the same way that central govermnent control did it to the USSR and to pre-capitalist China.
Bureaucrats can't even manage the post office, yet Obama is trying to tell you they can manage healthcare, the auto industry, and tell you what type of light bulbs to buy. It is ridiculous. There is no way this country or the middle class in this country will survive another 4 years of Obama and his socialist policy. He thinks he can do the same thing that has been done in Greece, Italy and Spain, but somehow when he does it it will have different results. Doing the same thing and expecting different results is not the definition of intelligent behavior, it is the definition of insanity. Romney is a good man and no amount of Religious bigotry (which is the same thing as racism-it comes from the same place in the mind and the heart) can change that. The fact that he was extremely successful and he is willing to use his experience to help fix this broken country is a good thing. Sorry but experience as a politician and community organizing is not what this country needs.
If you want to compare religion, then lets look at the Reverend Wright and the hate that he teaches and compare it to what Romney has been taught by his religion. Lets shine the spotlight on Obama and his religious upbringing just as brightly as you want to shine it on Romney. I will take a Mormon who believes the consitution was an ispired document over an Obama that teaches America is a country which should be hated anyday.

I can say with 100% certainty that independents were always going to dislike Romney. You know how I know that? Because EVERYBODY dislikes Romney.
Bet those independents also don't like the idea Romney pays a lower tax rate than ordinary working folks. People don't care how many millions Romney has or how much he makes but they do care that the system is rigged.

In general, those individual or corporate taxpayers who received the bulk of their income from personal services or manufacturing were taxed at relatively higher tax rates than others. Jody - have you been watching Bill Moyer's new program on PBS. He discusses in depth just how much the system is rigged. I really enjoyed the last program with the former CEO of CitiBank. He too, agreed that the marriage of Wall Street and the Banking system was disastrous. I found it very enlightening that he identifies with and supports the message of OWS.

Jody--not only does he pay such a low rate relative to those whose income is earned, his tax plan would lower the taxes on the 1% while increasing taxes on the lowest earning Americans. And this is supposed to make independents like him?
I don't think most people fully appreciated how rigged the system has been since the Bush tax cuts came about, lowering taxes on interest and dividends to 15%, along with capital gains. Most people don't have a lot of that income so they wouldn't know about how it was taxed. Plus, it isn't obvious from the return how the tax is calculated (for those who have someone else do their returns or even on Turbo Tax).

Community Organizing is pretty much politics, these community groups are mostly funded by the government so Romney is right. Obama has only done two things in his life, community organize and hold political office--lifelong politician.
Said it before, say it again...you can't make 40+ million in 2 years in the form of returns and dividends and then talk about how sour the economy is. Money is still moving Mitt. If it weren't, you wouldn't be pulling in that kind of cash. The economy is sour for everybody...except those with the heavy green backs.
People want to lump Buffet and Romney together. The difference, in my opinion, is that Buffet gives voice to the inequality and unbalanced playing field tilted heavily towards the Haves. Romney does not.

The latter half of that statement may well be true, but the first half I have issue with. You didn't pay for the schools, camps or any other institutions you went to. Your education (and a darn good education to boot) was paid for by Parents who loved you and were able to provide that to you. In my opinion, for you to casually dismiss what they provided for you in the beginning tells me all I need to know.
Hears what I hear, the President speaks about what his Mother and Grandparents did for him to provide him his education. Romney speaks about what he did as works of his own hands.

i am interested in his experience in his church as bishop and other leadership position. As the article stated, it is not about theology or even Mormonism but real orgainzing expereince. Mormon communities are set up like small cities with all sorts of rules, procedures and political and social action for the benefit of its members.
But Romney never speaks about that part of his past work expereince.

When the Mormon church excommunicates you, you leave the state, leaving your parents and family behind, never to show your face again, never to see your children again, you give up everything you thought was solid in life.
There is a hell of a difference.
Mormon (Church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints) communities? There aren't any. Name one. There are some smaller cities in Utah that are predominatly LDS or mormon but they don't have any special rules, they live by the same laws that everyone else in the state of Utah or whichever state they live in does. Where do you people get these crazy ideas?
If you want to know what mormons believe get a copy of the Book of Mormon and read it. You can get a free copy by contacting any mormon or going to www.mormons.org or www.lds.org. Judge for yourself before believing something someone who doesn't actually know anything about the Church Romney belongs to tells you. The Church has one of the most successful and sophisicated welfare and humanitarian aid organizations in the world. Because of an all voluntary clergy (Mormon local church leaders like Romney was serve for free, he also didn't accept any salary for turning Bain or the Utah Olympics around either-he did that for free as well) the Church has a lot of money to use helping others and they do a much better job of this than the federal government does. The only group I would say that does it better is the Amish, but the Amish limit their good works to their local communities, the Mormon church spreads it's money all over the world whenever there is a catastrophe and a need.

Who hid his funds into thees offshore accounts?? Why did he hide these funds in the offshore accounts?? How long has the "Romulian" hidden his unearned money in offshore accounts?? Why would the GOP "Speculator and Chief" ever want to make the US Tax Codes fair?? This "Romulian" believes that Corporations are people! Really?? He loves to fire people! He likes to put "Profits Over People!" The "Romulian" is not Presidential at all, and the "Romulian" would be "Politically Pulverized" by President Obama. That is fact! The "Rumulian" is still collecting a paycheck for Bain Captial, and he does not even know what a pink slip looks like. That is fact! The "Romulian" knows what the Middle Class is struggling with! Romey paid out 42% of all his earnings in 2010 to the government or to charity. So what if the government only got 15% of it, the government wastes most of the money we send them anyway. If bureaucrats actually had a clue how to run ANYTHING most people like me wouldn't mind sending them money. I don't like my money being wasted, I like to see people like Romney keep what is theirs, the government doesn't have any right to it. It is especially good when someone like Romney gives more to private charities than he does to the government, private charities use the money wisely and it actually benefits the people who need help, Obama just hire some more bureaucrats and hopes that some of the money trickles down to those who need it. But it gets eaten up by the bureaucrats and their friends and by those who can easily obtain it fraudulently because government bureaucrats are clueless when it comes to actually running anything.

Romney wants to close tax loopholes for the rich, Obama doesn't. Why is that do you suppose? Could it be that Obama wan'ts to raise taxes on the rich, but not on all the rich, only those that aren't his supporters? Do you think maybe he wants to leave loopholes for his rich friends like Sorros and Buffet to enjoy? The way to raise taxes on the rich is not to raise the tax rate it is to revise the tax system and close the loopholes that all the lobbying by rich coroporations and people like Sorro's and Buffet have created for themselves 0ver the past 20 years by buying congressmen, senators and presidents.

Take an actual look at the real world, see how things get done, vote for someone who wants to change the tax code, close loopholes and create a fair tax. In spite of all the loopholes the 1% still pay more than their fair share of taxes, if you add up all the taxes the bottom 95% of us taxpayers pay, the 1% pay more than we do. What we need to do is eliminate the special treatment of some of these 1% by getting rid of the loopholes they have purchased. As a group they are already paying far more than their fairshare and we need them to have money to invest in creating jobs for a middle class in this country so we have to get rid of the government regulations that make investing money in China and India more profitable for them. This is a global economy, the US competes for the one percenters investment dollars with all the other countries in the world. Obama is making it difficult to invest here, he wants to penalize them for making money here. What do you think will be the result of that type of policy? Can any of you see what is happening in Greece, Italy, Spain, and France. Perhaps you should take a good look around and get a small dose of reality.

Since Gingrich and Santorum "made so many really tacky allegations about Romney and were the ones that presented them and Romney went wor negative toward his rivals and Obama...............I would expect Obama is working night and day so that "if any of these allegations are true........Romney becomes a casualty."

If the prediction by Bernake is true that this economny will show no improvement to very little improvement for at least the next 2 years, the voters will not wait around for Obama to ask the people to give him 4 more years. Romney may not win a popularity contest with the independents, but given a choice between him and Obama, the independents will take an unpopular competent businessman over the talking turd that currently resides in the Whitehouse. I agree. Especially in a bad economy, the Independents will not vote for Obama in the general election, even if they do not like the Republican candidate.

He looks the part, but nothing else is right for him to be the President.

Why would anyone vote for Romney? All of the GOP candidates have a lot more money than I do, but Romney has way more than all of them. He is so out of touch with the average Joe and our financial situations, that he cannot relate to our situations. I think that all that will happen, if he get elected is that he will get a lot richer and the rest of us will get poorer. I really wish Herman Cain would have stayed in the race. I will write him in if Pomney is nominated.
Do you think Mitt could live with my tax plan? It is very simple. Double the standard deduction and personal exemptions. Allow only interest paid to be deducted for only one residence. Keep the same tax table as we now have. Mitt and his cronies would be taxed at 36%.
People say that if we tax the rich to harshly, they won't use their money to make jobs. Bull. They would use it to make more money to offset the increase in taxes paid. Why? Because one of the traits of human nature is greed. They will do what they have to keep up their income levels.
Get a clue. If we tax them here, they take their investment money elsewhere. Why do you think China and India are expanding and we are not. A total of 47% of independent voters said they would choose Ron Paul compared to 45% of independent voters choosing Mitt Romney against Obama… Obama would get just 40% of the independent vote in that contest…
We've known this for quite a while, one problem, getting Dr Paul to the nomination for those votes to count.
If the Republicans are so set on removing Obama from the oval office, there is one guaranteed way to do it, but it will be cutting their neo-con political throat, Nominate Dr Paul but, in the end, they will be saving the Republican party and the country.
Count me among the independents who has a negative opinion of Romney. But, hey, look on the bright side, Mitt. You're still head and shoulders above the rest of the Republican field.
Here's Mitt's real problem, though: if he tries to pivot back to the center, it's just going to feed the narrative that he's a dishonest politician who only says whatever he needs to in order to get elected. And every step will be met with fierce resistance and criticism from the conservatives in his own party. Republicans are backing their own guy into an unpopular corner just like they did with McCain. For a full repeat of 2008, Democrats just need to find a way to convince him to pick Jan Brewer as a running mate.

Mark Erich Joseph Laschinski makes a good point. I know the media, and radio talk show pundits want to pretend Ron Paul does not exist, but here is the reality of it all. Ron Paul has more RePublican votes than people realize. Ron Paul has a huge number of support from Democrats. Independents will vote for Ron Paul too. Romney, Gingrich, and Santorum all represent the status quo. They represent party politics and business as usual. With Ron Paul running against President Barack Hussein Obama, everyone who voted for the incumbent President last election, would vote for Ron Paul in this one. Sounds like a winner to me.
