Gingrich labels Romney a 'liberal'

LADY LAKE, Florida– As the race in Florida draws to a close, Newt Gingrich is trying to draw a much sharper contrast between himself and his “liberal” GOP rival Mitt Romney.

“I am, in fact, the legitimate heir of the Reagan movement, not some liberal from Massachusetts,” Gingrich told the several thousand-person crowd at The Villages, a retirement community outside of Orlando.

In the past, the former House speaker always referred to Romney as a “Massachusetts moderate,” but early Sunday Gingrich began labeling the former Massachusetts governor as a “liberal” instead.

“This party is not going to nominate somebody who is a pro-abortion, pro gun control, pro tax increase liberal,” Gingrich told reporters about Romney outside Idlewild Baptist Church after attending services there this morning.

Gingrich has seen his poll numbers slip in the Sunshine State, where at one point he was beating Romney by a sizable margin. In the new NBC News/Marist poll released Sunday morning, Romney pulled ahead of Gingrich by 15 points – 42 percent to 27 percent.

The former speaker, though, said he was not discouraged by the polls and reiterated to reporters that he would take his campaign to Tampa in August.

“We will go all the way to the convention,” Gingrich said , adding that the convention might be a broken one.

“We have no evidence yet that Romney anywhere is coming close to getting a majority and I think when you take all the non-Romney votes, it's very likely that at the convention there will be a non-Romney majority and maybe a very substantial one,” he said.

The conservative vote in Florida seems to be split between Gingrich and Rick Santorum, who is polling at 16 percent in the new poll. Adding together the two men’s numbers would in turn pull one candidate ahead of Romney, which Gingrich hopes will eventually happen.

“Rick's going to get a decent vote … on Tuesday. I have no doubt the two of us are going to collectively outscore Romney,” Gingrich said. “And at that point it might be a pretty good conversation” to have with Santorum about trying to consolidate all the conservatives behind one candidate, he added.

Romney's first job was as a security guard. Fresh out of college Romney worked as a management consultant , as a consultant he helped failing companies become successful. He worked his way up to vice president of the company. Later he started his own company helping to start companies like staples. The old company he had worked for was facing financial ruin so they asked Romney to come back and save it... Within one year of his return, the company became profitable again. It became one of the top firms in the country. Romney was asked to help save the 2002 Olympics because it was headed for financial failure. Before Romney took over it was running $379 million short of its revenue benchmarks. Romney revamped the entire thing and made it a wild success. Romney is exactly what this country needs right now! Our country is running deeper into debt every second. Our economy is in ruin. We need someone like Romney to turn our country around and make it a success! 2012 can not come soon enough!

then the United states could hide a lot money in out of country accounts just as romney did to avoid paying his underpaid fair share of taxes. The US Govt. gave him and lots of others a way to avoid jail time by admitting to these accounts, bringing the money bvack into US accounts and pay a small fine which is exactly what he did so he avoided jail and only paid 12% tax rate and a very small fine. He and all of the other rich Republicans and Democrats need to pay the same percentage rate as the rest of us and go to jail if caught cheating on taxes like the rest of us. I pay my fair share of my income so should Romney and all of the other rich people and big business. Romney cheated on his taxes and that shows good leadership?

Us militant centrists would like a centrist in the White House although they can be just as evil as the warmongers on the right and the welfare state lovers on the left. A Goldman Sachs stooge like Romney wouldn't qualify.

    Reply#263 - Mon Jan 30, 2012 10:52 AM EST

There apparently is no such thing as a centrist. I have one person I work with who is sure I'm a right wing facist and another who is positive that I'm a bleeding heart liberal. I prefer to think of myself as a rational person who can make my own decisions own each issue based on research and thoughtful consideration, unencumbered by party dogma.

Well at least Gingrich was able to get that right. Mitt Romney's health care plan in Massachusetts, is almost identical to Obamacare. I really see no difference between Romney and Obama. They are both left leaning moderates. But at least Obama doesn't lie about it.

The Massachusetts health care law, that Mitt signed and gave his enthusiastic support for, is very successful. Ninety eight percent of all people are covered. This law is not controversial. The support for this law is overwhelming. Mitt accomplished something the public wanted and now he's claims it's a bad idea. Who is this guy? Does he stand for anything?

A woman went to a doctor to see about getting a brain transplant for her husband. The doctor said it is possible but very expensive. "How much?", she asked. "Well," the doctor answered, "it depends on what kind of brain you want. For instance, a teachers brain is $300 an ounce, a scientist's brain is $800 an ounce, and a politician's brain is $1,000,000 an ounce." "Good God!", exclaimed the woman, "why so much for a politician's brain?" The doctor answered, "Dear lady, do you realize how many of them it takes to get an ounce of brains?"

Newt "THE HOOT" Gingrich thinks he is the only Republican candidate that can go toe to toe against President Obama. Newt hasn't faced reality. The reality is that Newt hasn't even seen his toes in decades. There is one other small detail he has yet to accept and that is that he is a habitual liar that claims to be a historian and all he is spreading is HISTORY ACCORDING TO NEWT.

Let Newt win the nomination. It will lead to the worst drubbing the GOP has seen in its history across the board. Then we can all laugh at Mr. Ailes and the Koch Brothers for digging their own graves.

Running through this string of mostly inane observations,I am at least pleased to see that the Reagan Myth is finally deflating...the apotheosis of this numbskull and the adulation showered on his feeble ideas has always puzzled me...and the mantras intoned by the current pretenders invoking this idiot's legacy is a sign of mass lunacy that I hope will someday be debunked by able historians. As stated by A Hamilton--"The people sir?..The people is a great beast".

Hahaha...timing is everything. Remember the failed attempt to rescue the hostages taken during the Iranian revolution? Remember runaway inflation?

Poor Carter...Reagan arrived on the scene at the point of a huge transition...the end of U.S. post WW II dominance. Arab Sheiks were setting our oil prices; third world countries seizing our embassies and running us out of their countries (Vietnam before Iran). Shifting trade balances, settling in to chronic deficits. In short, a lot of what Carter was blamed for, was simple global economic evolution. In fact, if it were not for that and if Ford had been able to hold Reagan's loyalty, as well as avoided the pardon of Nixon, he would have probably had two terms and the Reagan Revolution may have never happened.

Ford was never going to get a second term. He was the only President to ever serve without being elected to at least the Vice-presidency and voters were not going to validate that action by electing him President. Worst thing to happen to the Republican Party was Reagan's acceptance of endorsement by Jerry Falwell's Moral Majority. Forever tainted their ability to govern based on rational decision making.

You have a point regarding Ford...but it is as debatable as my own suggestions. On your second point, I doubt it. Both parties cater to groups of irrational supporters. IMO, Reagan's ability was his short-conservative-one-liners, with the ability to say one thing, while doing another. Smoke and mirrors...which served him well, up until Iran-Contra. Reaganomics was and is "voodoo economics."

Not that Reagan was the only President to master "smoke and mirrors," which has been more the rule than the exception.

Conservative was never demonized by the left. It was just used out of context by Republicans who are trying to appear to be something that they're not. It's the Grand ole party that likes turning words into derogatory political propaganda sound bites. They themselves trashed the word conservative by being hypocrites. Republicans beat their drum to a different dictionary that's indoctrinated into them by their puppet masters and fools follow gladly trumpeting their new found hate messages. Thee End ...

I live in Massachusetts and I can attest that Mitt ran as a liberal. In a run for senator against Ted Kennedy, he ran to Ted's left. He promised to support abortion rights, favored gun control and civil unions. Moreover, he claimed he was an independent and was not a GOP puppet. Today, I hardly recognize him. He's flipped to the right on all issues. The man is a chameleon, a phony. He has no convictions and will tell his audience what they want to hear.

Romney is a liberal or progressive as they like to be called now personally I like the real names of socialist communist the biggest enemy of the american way of life. Romney has nothing in his background that proves him to be a conservative but to much to prove his alliance to our enemies starting with romneycare the foundation of obama's corrupt illegal law obamacare that is not just costing jobs but also throwing the elderly under the bus by taking billions out of medicare. Second is evidence that Romney has strong connections to freddy and fannie the government funded crony capitalism lending firms that caused the crash. I hear the argument of voting for who has a chance to win as a republican but whats the point if that person is still a progressive aka liberal aka communist democrat or republican they will continue toward big government and bankrupting the country. I'm not a hundred percent for newt but at least he passed 4 balanced budgets under impeached president clinton and is responsible for getting him to sign the welfare reform bill by continuously sending back every time the low life vetoed it. Let's see when the liberals aka communists had total control of congress under pelosi and reid how many balanced budgets did they come up with the answer zero because they never in the years of absolute control put out a budget they just spent like teens with their first credit card. Republicans if you don't vote for a real conservative then the big government spending will continue with the only difference being you'll be the ones taking the blame when they crash the country and it will be the republican party that dies in the wake instead of the communist party formerly known as the democratic party. Republican voters the socialists are a cancer in you party and in washington it's time you start cutting it out by voting them out. That goes for the independent party as well the clown rhode island has as governor won as an independent but has and always will be a socialists weasel.

Did you Tea Party folk actually believe you could take control of the GOP ?

It is past time you realized that the super wealthy power elite that control the GOP have merely been using you. You are no more than a vote to them. They can take you for granted so long as they promise (never deliver) to support your pet social legislation (anti-immigrant, gay, union, etc.).

You should be voting for an independent or even a democrat. Those of us in the middle class actually have a say in the democrat party. Our party powers wanted Hillary Clinton. We wanted Obama. Who won? Your party powers want Romney. You want anyone but Romney. Who's winning? How many times must you be slapped down before you realize you are in the wrong club?

Quite a number of posts back, before the thread took off on Reagan, there was a long post from John-307815 about liberals, etc. I want to thank you for that post, John. I copied it, printed it and put it in my wallet so I can pull it out when I need a good laugh or want to provide written proof of how foolish some people are about their politics and their religion.

But seriously, the biggest problem so many right wingers have is that they have such a misconception of who liberals actually are. Liberals R Us. Across the board as to position, place in society, occupation, income, beliefs, etc. And as hard as it is for you to accept, many of us are born-again Christians. Me? Child of a baptist minister and missionary to the indians in Mexico. Baptized at age 12, married in the church, have tried to live a moral life. Liberal? Absolutely. When I ask "What Would Jesus Do?" I am convinced that Jesus was the ultimate liberal. Remember Zacheus, the lepers, the poor, feeding the five thousand, "suffer the little children," the widow's mite, throwing out the moneychangers, the log passing through the eye of the needle?

BTW, it's not that liberals caved into the scathing definition of the term liberal, it's that we simply do what liberals do - analyze it, see how silly it is and how wrong, consider the source, discard it and get on with our lives. It's called tolerance.
