PANAMA CITY, Fla. -- In the final days of campaigning before Tuesday's pivotal Florida primary, former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney's campaign is leaving no weapon unused against his chief rival Newt Gingrich.
At his afternoon rally Saturday, and on television, Romney's attack centered on Newt's history within the Republican party.
"He's an historian. But that doesn't give him the right to rewrite history," Romney said of Gingrich. "The Contract with America, that was a good thing. We took over the House, that was great news. What happened four years later? Well he was fined for ethics violations. He ultimately had to resign in disgrace. He can't rewrite history. We have to go back and look at history and say he may be a great guy with a lot of great ideas, but he is not the leader we need at a critical time."
Meanwhile, on television screens across Florida, the Romney campaign was up with a new ad titled "History Lesson," which excerpts an NBC Nightly News broadcast from 1997, in which anchor Tom Brokaw is seen reporting the news of Gingrich's ethics violation.
NBC News on Saturday wrote a letter requesting the Romney campaign remove all network material from the ad.
Romney campaign adviser Eric Fehrnstom said after the event that the campaign had received the letter and was reviewing it, but believed it fell under legal "fair use" guidelines. In the meantime, the ad will continue to air across Florida.
On a third front, Romney surrogates Saturday continued to appear at Gingrich campaign stops, chatting with reporters and jousting with Gingrich campaign spokesman R.C. Hammond.
Fehrnstrom described the surrogates -- Reps. Charlie Bass (R-NH), Connie Mack (R-FL) and Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) -- as a "truth squad," and said the Romney campaign got the idea from Gingrich, who has promised to trail President Obama around the country to seek out opportunities to debate the president, should Gingrich become the Republican nominee.
The Romney campaign would not say if the "truth squads" would continue after the Florida primary.

I have my vote worked out... Going to vote for the biggest lier... Boy that's going to be rough to figure as they are all calling each other liers...
What a sad joke for American... to have to choose between these "great American crooks"...
wow really, romney is so rich its stupid, you think he cares about the people really, the guy is @!$%#en twisted in the head,we need some one who understands the people and is for the people, not rich and can careless of the people, our rights are gone her ein the states, they just passed a @!$%#e dup law for all people here, they can do w/e with you any time they want,if they even think your a problem,go look it up got passed like a not to long ago by congress, its suppose to stop terriost, like wtf,i been in cali all my life, and i never ran into a terriost, they make this @!$%# up so all you people have fear, dude when was th elast time you seen a ied in our road sin the states never, the only thing that happend was 9/11,that was bad,but that doesnt go on everyday, this tatic they use is @!$%#en failed, they want people to picture everyu middle eastern person as a terriost no joke,we live in a sick world, that is ran by moneu greed and the killing of innocent people.
Is rich bad? Sometimes rich means untouchable, a good thing in a politician. FDR, JFK and GWB 1 and 2 were rich and although they all can be criticized, none of them can be criticized for taking money to do dirt. Nixon and Carter were relatively poor and they both drew about a 9" vacuum. And the 2 of them, big time failures, left the office richer than when they showed up.
Anthony, admire your spunk...but you need a spell checker and a grammar checker. It was complete torture reading your post.
How will Mitt Romney address fairness with American workers whom he took advantage of them during Bain Capital and made a quick profit by slice and dice the companies he brought, and now he only pay 13.9 % tax rate from that wealth, when American workers pay 30-40 tax rate? Will Mitt address fair share with American workers or he wil call them envy of his 13.9% tax rate and Swiss Bank account?
By the way, will Mitt Romney show American voters his complete tax return since Bain Capital?
You are one of many who think the evils men do within the law make them crooks. These deeds make them soul-less but not criminals
Soulless is assured, criminal is still a hung jury. Luckily, voters don't need conviction before sentencing.
Your choice, vote for a melted down political party, trying to kill America to spite her president OR
Vote for a party and president trying to get America back on its feet.
We apologize for the lack of choice. (Ron Paul supporters, please don't tag to this about your lame candidate)
I find that both Romney and Gingrich often tell the truth. I believe everything they say about each other.
The fact that these two guys are the rights best shot at the White House is a miracle for the Democrats. How ironic that just when the right has controlled the supreme court, sold their souls to corporations, is working to take away voting rights and trying to redistrict to their benefit and has been highly successful with their Obama lie machine ala Fox news, they are stuck with these two well, unfit candidates. May be there is a God. Screw you Karl Rove!
Mittens better be careful with that history stuff. He's got some himself.
Full disclosure: I'm a died-in-the-wool lifelong Democrat. But Gingrich is not just an "historian" - he is history. Hope Freddie and Fannie got their money's worth from their "historian."
ENOUGH ALREADY!!! You're supposed to be running for president, not out to implode your Republican party.
Romney calling Gingrich out about the truth. Can life be anymore ironic?
Speaking of History, check this out. None partisan interviews on how the banks got completely out of control.
One of the people interviewed, Citibank CEO. Bill Moyer doing the interviews.

Where is Biden? I wish he would say something about these two character assassins. The Republicans could use some comic relief.
He's just Biden his time until the real fights start. Can't afford to stick your foot in your mouth too many times you know.
It always upsets me to hear politicians, whichever party, concentrate on politics instead of focusing on representing the people. I know, they have to succeed at politics before they can succeed for the people but it just seems like they get carried away and loose focus on what is important to the people. Prime example has been the Republican / Tea Party with their total concentration on their political ambitions, totally focusing all of their efforts on faulting and blocking Obama, without any hesitation or conscience for the costs to or needs of the people, only being "puppets" for "the few", their strong supporters who "pull their strings". After the last twelve years, I really don't see any justification for any Republican / Tea Party candidate to win and that isn't saying the Democrats are so great, just that they have demonstrated they are more interested in serving the people and not just owned and controlled by "the money". Bush-Cheney gave us the example the Republicans want to return to, the total concentration on "the few", always pushing this country towards being a two-class society with "the few" competing in having it all and the majority struggling to survive. The economy hasn't done all that well under Obama but maybe it could without the self-serving obstructionism of Boehner, McConnell, Cantor, Ryan, Bachmann and the others.
All i'm going to say is GOD help us cause what i see is ROMNEY AND OBAMA isn't worth a PEA IN A POD.
I'm republican and as i see now if we don't stop the name calling OBAMA will win in 2012 and that will end America as we've known. So the republicans have to show they can turn America around and undo what OBAMA has done to THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
we'll be a third class world if ( we the people don't get our act together and stop those who are destorying our country.)
