PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- With just three days to go until the Florida primary, Newt Gingrich told reporters Saturday he is in this presidential race for the long haul.
“I will go all the way to the convention. I expect to win the nomination,” Gingrich told reporters following an event outside the PGA Museum. “You just had two national polls that show me ahead. Why don’t you ask Gov. Romney what he will do if he loses since he is behind in both national polls?”
The former House speaker, who convincingly won the South Carolina primary, says he will get to the GOP convention in Tampa “state-by-state.” “If we win Florida, I will be the nominee,” he also noted to the couple hundred people in the crowd.
GOP rival Mitt Romney and Gingrich are fighting it out down in the Sunshine State this week – throwing jabs at each both on their own and with surrogates.
Romney continues to call Gingrich “Goldilocks” – making fun of him for complaining about the audience at debates. Gingrich reiterates his assertion that Romney lies because the campaign is desperate, telling reporters Saturday, “You cannot debate somebody who is dishonest.”
Surrogates from the Romney campaign stand in the back of most Gingrich events to give a “rebuttal” to the press. Saturday outside the golf museum, three members of Congress – Rep. Charlie Bass, R-N.H., Rep. Connie Mack, R-Fla., and Rep. Mary Bono Mack, R-Calif., – stood chatting when Gingrich campaign spokesman R.C. Hammond, for the third day in a row, approached the group and began asking questions.
Gingrich told reporters curious what he thought of the way his spokesman interacts with members of Congress that it is “a free country” and sees the Romney campaign sending supporters to his events as evidence of “desperation.”
“It's a slight overmatch – R.C.'s a little bit more informed than they are, but nonetheless, it's fine with me, he [Romney] can send as many members as he wants. When he gets tired we'll bring Toby back and Toby's agreed to help R.C. take a hit,” Gingrich said. [Toby is R.C. Hammond’s dog.]
One Romney surrogate, Rep. Bass, served with Gingrich in the House back in the '90s and said voters should listen to those who worked with the Speaker.
“He is a good guy but he is not going to be president of the United States,” Bass said. “He knows it, we know it, the people of Florida will know it next Tuesday.”

There have been a few things that have been difficult for me to handle during all of this including Romney wearing faded blue jeans, Gingrich's smirk, Romney referring to his $374,000 in speaking fees as 'incidental' income, Paul suggesting that the income tax rate be lowered to zero, and Gingrich's moon colony. Lots of others, but it's bedtime.

Gingrich will have to pay his way to the convention and get in as a bystander. HE'S DONE-FACE IT. He's done just like Grandpa Ron Paul. Romney is the conservative, but more importantly, nobody is rooting for Newt more than Obama.

If you have to give Newt any credit in this race, than it would surely have to be his ability to keep on being horridly humiliated and keep on ticking or in his case tricking (smile)... Because if he can talk about moon colonies, where he would send his exes of course, and still be in the current republican nomination process. That speaks volumes on his competition and how the party is supporting them. Yet for all of his woes and how his own political party has treated him. He is but a sweet one-two bloody nose punch away from totally exposing his rivals and all of their weaknesses. Almost like rooting for Cartman to kick the British dorks behind on Southpark... I’d like to see fair media coverage on all candidates especially Ron Paul. This is what goes on a Presidential debate? I've seen better 3rd world country stuff keep me more interested than what see on TV or the newspapers. I'm a liberal Democrat that loves President Obama & wants him re-elected but between Romney & Newt I prefer Newt, he at least is just what he says he is, Romney looks like the devil in the movie "End of days" & couldn't make an up or down decision if chinese troops were landing in California.

There is a pattern with Newt. He is always complaining that external factors work against him. The Romney smear campaign, the media, the crowd in Florida. If he wants to be loved, which seems to be the reason why is running for president, he better get out of politics.

This is evidenced by the current battle for Republican Nominee. Any level headed person can see the best candidate is Romney, however he is not 'CONSERVATIVE' enough for the base. And the Silver tonged devil (New Gingrich) has labeled him a moderate, a label the Tea-Publicans just cant tolerate, moderates are not allowed to breat or procreate as far as the REAL TeaPublicans are concerned..
Thus they have schizophrenically painted themselves into this purity corner. Mitt is not Conservative enough for their tastes so instead it seems they would prefer a candidate who has divorced three times for younger woman, who as former speaker of the house literally, shut down the government because he felt he did not get preferential seating on Air force one, and ultimately was thrown out of office by his own peers for Ethics violations. The Republican's as a party are so DESPERATE to defeat Barack Obama that they are willing to put a known crook of questionable restraint and judgement in the White House as President of the United States.
Newt has CLEARLY demonstrated he does not have the judgement OR the restraint to be President. His past actions speak for themselves. However if Romney gets the election the base will not rally round him because he is a moderate who is not 'CONSERVATIVE' enough for their tastes. If this country needs ANYTHING right now it is a moderate, we need to move to the middle not the extremes.
This is SO rich to watch the Republican party going down in a pile of their own making. Ladies and Gentlemen of America don't fall for the Republican hype. Like true GANGSTAS they are willing to destroy the whole empire if they are taken out! They are trying to convince you that things are so dire, the world in such disarray, that we are all about to EXPLODE! And they only way to stop this from happening is to vote us back in office so we can continue to screw things up just like they were a short 4 years ago.

Gingrich is the only person the Republicans have with any brains. Romney, Santorum and Paul are sleepers with average intellects. Ron Paul is the most dangerous candidate out there because he really wants to get rid a lot of the government that "keeps things going." Insane.
I'll only disagree with you on one minor point...Gingrich talks the way stupid people imagine really smart people to sound.
He's also probably the most dishonest of the whole bunch...and that's saying a lot.
I'm really going to miss Newt! It's too bad his surge couldn't have lasted a little longer. My hope now is that Paul surges next.

How will Mitt Romney address fairness with American workers whom he took advantage of them during Bain Capital and made a quick profit by slice and dice the companies he brought, and now he only pays 13.9 % tax rate from that wealth, when American workers pay 30-40 % tax rate? Will Mitt address fair share with American workers or he will call them envy of his 13.9% tax rate and Swiss Bank account?
By the way, will Mitt Romney show American voters his complete tax return since Bain Capital?

funny, because I'm pretty sure votes win elections, not debates. This isn't American Gladiators. Part of winning votes is not pissing off the public, which Newt is doing whole groups at a time. jac, I would have given Huntsman a real close look, and probably voted for him also. But no way will any of these other idiots receive my vote. At least with Obama, he is trying to clean up a mess he didn't make. And congress is not helping him.
Look at Obama's poll numbers compared to Congress. That should explain a lot of things to people. But some people are so blind in their hate, it won't matter. It will be a interesting time upto the elections in Nov.
