Romney revising disclosures for overseas accounts

Mitt Romney could face new questions about his overseas investments after a campaign official acknowledged to NBC News that his campaign is revising his federal ethics forms to report more than a half dozen offshore holdings, including income from a multi-million dollar Swiss bank account that was not disclosed last year.

The tax returns released by the Romney campaign this week showed that the Ann Romney Blind Trust had reported $1,783 in interest income from a bank account held at UBS in Switzerland in 2010. But interest from the Swiss bank account -- as well as holdings in other offshore investments in the Cayman Islands, Bermudas and Ireland that appear in the trust fund's tax returns -- were not disclosed in Romney’s financial disclosure form filed with the Office of Government Ethics last August.

A Romney campaign official emailed Thursday afternoon that Romney’s financial disclosure form is now being amended with the government ethics office “to address this minor discrepancy” and “to deal with some other minor issues.” The Romney campaign’s decision to amend the forms, and additional details about the failure to report the overseas holdings, was also reported Thursday by Los Angeles Times.

The number and size of Romneys’ offshore investments have lately emerged as a major campaign issue, putting the former Massachusetts governor on the defensive over his wealth (estimated at up to $250 million) and forcing his campaign to release his 2010 tax returns this week. When the campaign released the returns on Monday, it arranged for R. Bradford Malt, a longtime lawyer for the Romneys, to brief reporters in a conference call about them.

But while the returns have produced no revelations about any improper dealings on Romneys’ part, they have continued to raise questions about how and why some of his multiple overseas investments were made in the first place, and why there were not more fully reported on Romney’s financial disclosure forms.

Malt said he opened up the Swiss bank account, holdings in which are valued at between $1 million and $5 million, in 2003 on behalf the Ann Romney trust in order to provide “international currency diversification” for the trust's holdings. He then shut it down in early 2010, he said, and transferred the assets to the United States, noting that Romney was preparing to run for president at the time and he did not want to have it become an issue in the presidential campaign.

“I was worried that people would write stories not understanding this,” said Malt, who administers the blind trust on behalf of the Romneys.

But Malt apparently did not act quickly enough, given that the interest income had to be reported on the trust's tax returns for 2010. (He would not say when in 2010 the account was closed.)

The account was first disclosed as one of Romney's holdings when he filed a financial disclosure form in 2007 after he launched his first campaign for president. Malt acknowledged today that it should have actually been reported as a holding of the Ann Romney blind trust and that Romney’s 2007 financial disclosure form is also being amended to correct what he described as a "clerical error."

The campaign had no immediate explanation for why the  $1,783 in interest income from the UBS account had not been included in the 2011 financial disclosure, an omission noted by political rivals. The Democratic National Committee hastily organized a conference call Thursday afternoon to seize on the revelation.

Malt initially insisted in an interview that the amount was below the threshold that needed to be reported. But one category on the standard government financial disclosure form specifically asks candidates to report assets valued at between $1,000 and $5,000 as well as income from any holdings of between “$1,001 and $2,500.”  A campaign official later said Malt had been misunderstood, acknowledging that both the 2007 and the 2011 financial disclosures the campaign filed are being revised.

But the inclusion of the Swiss bank account is apparently not the only revision. The Ann Romney blind trust also reported income from shares in offshore companies such as Barricuda Investments Ltd. in Ireland, Castle Garden Funding in the Cayman Islands, and Sankaty High Yield Assets Investors Ltd. in Bermuda. Those holdings also were not included in the financial disclosure form that Romney filed last August. The form requires presidential candidates to report all assets and income for them and their spouses for the full calendar prior to the year of the filing.

But Malt said there had been no attempt by the Romneys to conceal these investments, and all taxes on their earnings were fully paid. Malt stressed that the Ann Romney trust fund was simply a passive shareholder in the investments funds, which in turn owned shares in the offshore companies. He said the investing entities were like “mutual funds.”

B. Hussein Obama has no positive record of accomplishments to run on. A record of success in jobs and the economy would've been easy to champion. But when you have a record of failure, joblessness, record deficit and U.S. Taxpayer spending with no positive results, Chicago-styled pay-for-play politicking & cronyism, recession and abject, blatant incompetence, half-truths are the best you can do.

Expect to hear more of this as B. Hussein Obama hits the stump this week. He’ll ignore his three years worth of failures and try to build his case on faulty premises and empty promises. That worked in 2008 because Obama had no record. But it won’t work on Nov. 6th, 2012, because he has a very clear record and that record is one of failure and no improvements to the U.S. economy or joblessness.

On the economy, jobs, health care, energy, the federal deficit, the U.S. national debt, housing, lobbyists, ethics, and energy policy -- all of these issues -- the president has broken his promises to the American people. It all makes for a very unflattering before-and-after.

Let’s take that list in reverse order.

On energy, B. Hussein Obama said in 2008 that it was time to end our foreign oil addiction. In 2011, he admitted, “we’re not where we need to be.” He called his own energy policy “just a hodgepodge.”And last week, he blocked the Keystone XL pipeline project, which would have provided America with a safe, affordable energy source, while creating thousands of new American jobs.

On campaign ethics, B. Hussein Obama called Wall Street executives “fat cats” and then acted like a fat cat himself: he’s accepted more Wall Street money than all other presidential candidates -- combined.

Health care was supposed to be B. Hussein Obama’s great achievement. He promised his plan would bring down premiums “by $2,500” for the typical family. Last year, they rose by 9 percent.

B. Hussein Obama boldly promised that lobbyists would never “find a job in my White House.” Yet to date, he’s hired almost 100 of them.

In 2008, he said former President George W. Bush's adding of $4 trillion to the U.S. national debt was “unpatriotic.” Yet B. Hussein Obama has increased it by more than $4.5 trillion and is on track to add trillions more in only three years as president.

B. Hussein Obama promised to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term. Instead, he racked up three record deficits of more than $1 trillion each year.

B. Hussein Obama promised he could create thousands of jobs with green energy spending. Then he lost a $535 million taxpayer-funded loan to the now-bankrupt, "green energy" company Solyndra.

With his $825 billion stimulus, Obama promised unemployment would stay at or below 8 percent. Not only did unemployment shoot past 8 percent, it hasn’t come back to that level since. It's been closer to between 9% and 10% for virtually his entire presidency, except in the last two months of 8.6% and 8.5%.

And then there’s the biggest promise of them all: the economy. B. Hussein Obama was so confident he could turn around the economy that he promised in early 2009 on NBC's Today Show, that if he didn’t have it fixed in “three years” then his presidency would “be a one-term proposition.”

(To be fair, that’s one promise he can still keep.)

In October of last year, President B. Hussein Obama unveiled the slogan “We Can’t Wait.” It was par for the course for a White House that regularly substitutes sloganeering for policymaking. And it was indeed merely a slogan. Three months later, we’re still waiting. We’re still waiting for a plan to revive the U.S. economy, a plan to reduce the U.S. national debt, a workable, reasonable, bi-partisan plan to keep any one of B. Hussein Obama’s many promises that HAVE NOT been kept. If this coming week is any indication, we’re going to be waiting a lot longer.

Remember, B. Hussein Obama is supposed to be this "great, compassionate man of the average-joe American" and president, but he is also the guy who actually insulted the handicapped and special needs, parents, coaches and players themselves of the Special Olympics on the Jay Leno show, calling his bad bowling, "like Special Olympics or something." The clip can been on YouTube titled: Barack Obama Special Olympics Insult.

The defense spending plan is scheduled to be submitted to Congress as part of the administration's full 2013 budget on Feb. 13.

If you willing blind would simply open your eyes, you would understand that you are be sold a complete bill of goods by Rove, Norquist, Limbaugh, Murdoch, the Tea-RNC and 1%er's that are simply UNTRUE. How often have you and/or RWNJ's and the RNC tried to tell American voters that the President has not submitted any budget request to Boehner and the House Johny? LIES AND FALSEHOODS. They have been offered and requested, but the FACT is that Boehner and the Tea-GOP either refuse to act at all, or attempt to "re-work" & amend them to the point that they could not possibly be acceptable, containing so-called "poison bullets" that insure their rejection.

Come on... How about some truth in lieu of RNC/Tea mis-information and talking points.

The President is continuing to lead and "fix" the nation's problems (as Mitch tried to convince us he and the GOP-Tea party would do if we only LET them!) but is constantly and continuously obstructed by those who hurt America.

    Back on topic.

GEEEEEZ how dumb do you think we are Mitt? Ooops, I forgot to declare my SWISS BANK ACCOUNT!

    My bad.

    GEEEEEEZ.

Mitt Romney is not only too rich to be President. He's toooooo dumb to be President. (Which is why I love him so much as the GOP Nominee :-)

And he will be the GOP nominee, mark my words. Newt is going to the moon to corner the green cheese market. He's going to have a colony of green cheese miners up there so it looks like Romney is the guy. Bless his greedy little vulture capitalist heart.

And the President will beat him without breaking a sweat.

WHAT? OHHHHH, you mean THAT Swiss Bank Account. Oh it's not much, only a million or so. Hardly matters.

    @Johny Bee

    B. Hussein Obama has no positive record of accomplishments to run on.

There really is no need for anyone to read past your first sentence as you are clearly not informed as to the actual "facts" of which you speak.

I personally don't care what party you are part of, what color your skin is, what your sexual orientation is, how old your are or what religion you are. But, what I do care about is that you be educated on the issues that you want to participate in debating.

You do a disservice to your country by posting this diatribe. If you truly care about the issues and want the future to be brighter than the past, then stop contributing to the problem and be part of the solution.

Do I believe that Obama has been the best president? No. Do I believe that he has made some very important accomplishments to run on, yes, I do.

But, more than my "opinion", there are "FACTS" to back up that assertion.

If you are going to keep your head in the sand and just spew lies and insults because you are bitter, then at least know that you aren't really making anything better yourself and that you certainly aren't making any accomplishments for yourself.

The outrage over the "tax-cheat" Romney only demonstrates the fact that those posing the rhetoric have never filed taxes of any significan amount. Romney doesn't prepare his own taxes, you mor0ns...they're done by accountants and lawyers.

Anyone labeling Romney at "tax-cheat" over this is an absolute ret@rd. The taxes were paid...the problem is a clerical one, not one of malfeasance. If you really want to talk about real "tax cheats", google Obama's appointees and their tax problems right after the last election. Indeed, distract by talking about Obama. It's what lobbyists are trained to do. Like in "Thank you for smoking" (2005):

(lobbyist) "but you didn't prove that vanilla was the best...

(son) I didn't have to. I proved that you're wrong, and if you're wrong I'm right.

Conservatives don't care who there candidate is. Ask one right now and they probably won't even commit to any other them, because they know they're all dirty. This is why they vote for such dirt bags. The kind that invade countries on lies. Or invent credit cards in the 1980s to enslave everyone into credit debt. The do what they are told. It's their religion. And their religion does not allow them to think for themselves. Free men (Latin: liberalis) are dangerous to them.

Conservatism is the new religion and no one questions their religious leaders. They just wait for the leader to be chosen for them and be told who the new enemy of the religion is.

how about the fact that 36 of President Obama's staff owe over 833,000 in unpaid taxes? So Romney only pays an effective tax rate of 15%? the average effective tax rate for the country is 9.4%, so he mays more than most. He broke no laws, unlike many on Obama's staff. I'd also like to point out that there is not a poster on this site that doesn't tell his accountant to find every legal deduction. Those that say they don't is a hypocrite.

"Conservatism is the new religion and no one questions their religious leaders. They just wait for the leader to be chosen for them and be told who the new enemy of the religion is."

Well put. Some of these people change with the wind, as long as they utter words such as, deregulation, huge defense budget, etc., they have the vote of the weak minded and the wealthy. They also play a game of "moral superiority." Half of their club hates Romney for his religion and the other half hate Gingrich for his many moral failings. I suspect with either one of these buffoons, turn out will be light. They call President Obama a "Socialist." The marginal tax rate was 91% during Eisenhower--now, 35%. Buffett states publicly that he paid in the high teens in income tax and Romney pays 13.9%.

Do they even vet these people at all? Cain? Gingrich, Romney? The Karl Roves sit back and sell criminal behavior as a virtue.

The Bush tax cuts for the 1% was to give them more money to invest in the United States. The Mittster took the tax breaks and invested it outside the US. Just to date we know Mitt invested more than $30 Million outside the US. So far the Bush tax breaks for the rich have cost over ONE TRILLION DOLLARS. How much of that is invested outside the US. That Trillion is money WE had to borrow from China and the Saudis, you and I and our grand children will be paying that back.

Mittens Rob-us-blind Flip Flop, the 1%'er CORPERTE RAIDER and one time governor of Liberal Mass but now he is an arch conservative. Has supported Abortion, Gay Rights, Gun Control, Stem Cell Research and has reverse himself on all of these issues.

    He took both sides on the financial bailout, the stimulus bill, the auto loan package;

His biggest Flip-Flop of all Health Care Reform The national Law is modeled on the one that he championed as governor in Mass that requires every citizen to have health insurance. Now he has Flipped-Flopped. Mr. Flop has taken a hard slide to the right pandering and boot licking to the tea party.

Mitt Flip-Flop Rob-us-blind, a wishy-washy, flip flopping spinless politician without any core convictions, principals or believes a man who will say or do anything to get elected telling one crowd one thing and another crowd another. You simply can’t trust this guy to tell you the truth.

The only good thing that would happen if Flip-Flop were to get elected It would prove that Conservatism is dead as Flip-Flop would stab the Conservatives in the back.

And now we find the little Twit has offshore bank accounts What A SLAZY BUCKET and TRAITOR!

Professor, your writing skills do not match what would be expected from one of such a title.

Second, as long as he goes back an ammends his reports, the most he will face is an interest penalty. More importantly, these errors appears to have been forced by moving legal accounts to avoid controversy over the accounts.

I think the hubbub over his wealth is stupid. IF he were elected president in terms of today's dollars he would be the Fifth wealthiest president.

    Here is the order

    1) George Washington

    2) Thomas Jefferson

    3) Herbert Hoover

    4) John F Kennedy

Only Herbert Hoover should have stayed home and managed his millions instead of managing the country.

Poor little Willard can't seem to catch a break. First he complains about his landscaper's hiring an illegal alien only because it could harm his run for presidency. Then he purges his gov't-issued hard drives before leaving office. Then he releases a limited number of tax returns only to realize that the disclosure generated more questions than answers. Then oops, he forgot to disclose the UBS bank account interest. Everyone in the financial world knows about the recent settlement between the IRS and UBS regarding UBS' practice of harboring tax cheats through the use of Swiss bank accounts. Clearly, his pursuit of the presidency is not based on a strong conviction, belief or dogma. It is based on a script written long ago by a man who feels his status and wealth ensure an easy path to the WH. But despite all the advanced planning and makeover attempts Romney remains an ideological charlatan whose conviction on anything, anything, lasts about as long as a proverbial fart in the wind!

Joethe lib Only 22% of the Bush tax cuts (you know those "tax breaks for the wealthy") went to the top 2% (so the top 1% got even a smaller %). Why incist that these were tax breaks for the wealthy? I know! It sounds good to the other 98%. A real test would be to let them ALL expire. If they benefited only the wealthy, nobody else would be harmed! So when the left only wants them to expire only on the wealthy, that makes any intelligent person doubt their statements that they were mainly for the wealthy!!!

Just a reminder.... when President Clinton (democrat) left office, he turned over the USA to President Bush (republican) with a financial surplus. 8 years later, the USA is in a financial hole to deep to get out from, no matter who is elected.

There is nobody to blame but the american people for re-electing President Bush to a second term. We all saw it. Expensive war in Afghanistan, then a second war in Iraq on false pretense. Tax cuts even when all these war spending is looming over our heads.

President Obama may not have the stellar records you people are expecting of him, maybe he setup the bar to high not realizing he will run into a republican congress whose goals is to prevent his re-election instead of working bipartisan to help the country in crisis.

I would like to know what these candidates have achieved in the past 4 years that helped this country instead of just coming out now swinging their bats wildly of what President Obama has failed on.

You want the job, show me a verifiable resume of your accomplishments and failures.

I can assume that you paid more last year than you owed because you thought it was the right thing to do (you were being patriotic)!! Since 47% of filers (this does not include those that were not required to file) paid no federal income tax, I cannot uderstand your statement that "Even POOR people pay 15.6%"! Mitt Romney didnt do anything wrong. This idea that having an offshore account inherently means your cheating is ludacris. The fact is these accounts, in this case, are more like IRAs or 401Ks than a tax haven. Anyone who has a significant amount of money INVESTED will inherently have very little idea where all of it is going and how its all being invested. I doubt very much that Romney had any clue these accounts weren't reported. In fact to quote the story itself, "

“I was worried that people would write stories not understanding this,” said Malt, who administers the blind trust on behalf of the Romneys.

But Malt apparently did not act quickly enough, given that the interest income still must be reported on the trust's tax returns for 2010. (He would not say when in 2010 the account was closed.)"

Key words being blind trust. The Romneys had no clue what was up. What bothers me the most about this critisim is every single one of you who pays taxes in the USA has signed that line at the end that says to the best of your knowledge this is all true and thought, "Well this is the year i go to jail." If people can mess up 1040EZ forms how would you imagine it's easier when you have more money and have to use the big boy forms.

Even sadder is every year theres a study group that sends out 100 identical copies of tax information for a ficticious "rich" person to be worked on by a tax "proffesional". Every year this study group recieves 100 DIFFERENT quotes for taxes owed. The real problem in this story is how the tax system is so convoluted that it makes it impossible to really know (EVEN FOR THE PEOPLE WHO ADMINISTER IT) if they are doing it correctly.

I am NOT a Romney fan (GO NEWT!!!), but $1783 in misplaced interest reported (AND TAXED appropriately) in a 600 page document declaring $21,000,000 in income is immaterial. (My tax returns are probably 30 pages, and they likely have similarly immaterial discrepancies (a similar percentage of my much smaller income) some years... 1099s reported oddly, etc. That said, if Mitt made $21 million in interest, then I think his principal balance is MUCH greater than $250 million... likely over $500 million and perhaps closer to $1 billion.

Romney is a LIAR! And he knows it. Bring on the evidence. We want to see him squirm.

And while you're at it, get that loud mouthed Gingrich to cough up all his hidden off-shore accounts as well. Gah, he's such a putz.

Not a tax cheat... just shady.. just like The Gingrich Who stole Christmas (300,000)

And unethical.. the disclosure form is important.. the hubris to think it won't catch up to you is shocking.

It's no big deal.. just report it.. to "ammend" the disclosure form now means you "lied" on it before.

Knowingly or unknowingly....With that kind of wealth, he is not doing his own taxes or disclosure forms.. my guess is that I would have my accountant fill out the disclosure so as to make sure nothing got missed or to make sure some things get missed..haha

Just so much deceit from the party of moral grandstanding.

Fiesty, You are absolutely right. Romney is not only part of 0.001% that want US government to give them more tax breaks so that stash more money abroad. Two notes I would like to say about Mitt. I am sure many of you are following the UBS agreement in 2009 and 2010 with US Justice Department to hand over names of approximately 4,950 U.S. holders of UBS accounts.

Quoting from one of the web site of US Tax attorney, "According to the 2008 Senate SubcommitteeReport on Tax Havens, UBS alone has “maintain[ed] for anestimated 19,000 U.S. clients ‘undeclared’ accounts in Switzerland with billions of dollars in assets that have not been disclosed toU.S. tax authorities.” Mitt's account might be one of them (just speculating) and if it's proven that Mitt Romney or any of his immediate family member has or had undeclared Swiss Bank account (highly likely), his candidacy is toast. I would like to see where all his tax disclosures would take him in this election.

                  AP-1414066

Do you think for yourself or just repeat whatever Obama and the DNC say? Do you even stop to really think and evaluate when they make statements like a secretary shouldn't pay more in taxes than a millionaire? Seriously- according to Mitt Romney's tax return for 2010 he paid MILLIONS of dollars in taxes- do you think Warren Buffets secretary paid that much? No, she didn't so Mitt Romney and Warren Buffet do pay more- point 1.

Point 2- Mitt Romney, Warren Buffet, and the like who are paying 15% now have ALREADY PAID 35% IN INCOME TAXES. Now they are paying 15% on the interest or profit earned on their investment money. Basically they are retired and living off the nest egg they were able to work hard to save- isn't that the goal of everyone?

MOST people don't pay any federal income tax by the time you figure in deductions and then tax returns. My family is in the middle class and I don't believe that because there are people that have been more successful that my family is entitled to take more money from them. I consider that stealing only for some reason because the government does it then it is legal.

His Taxes were paid, there was a simple omission on a proceedural document used as part of the candidacy application process - nothing more. As soon as the issue was identified, it was corrected as opposed to stirring the pot for three years before spending $$$$$ tax payers money to fly a personal lawer on a private Jet to Hawaii to deliver a alternate, non-standard birth certificate after the fact. Saying these moneys are a big deal is like saying your average middle class American fogot to mention that their 401K increased in value by $1.00

Give it a rest people - lets stick with the facts and focus on the issues and how we as citizens of this great mess can get out of the mire we've gotten ourselves into. Lets stop voting in dreamers and start voting in doers.

Here's an interesting article from The Atlantic:

Mitt’s wealthy father, American Motors CEO George Romney, released 12 years of his tax returns when he ran for the 1968 GOP Presidential nomination.

These papa Romney tax returns offer a window of their own — into just how amazingly rich people-friendly America’s current tax code has become.

From 1955 through 1966, George Romney reported income of $2.97 million — about $22 million in today’s dollars — and paid 36.9 percent of that in federal income tax.

George in his heyday rated as one of America’s highest income-earners. In 1960, his rewards from American Motors helped bring his total personal income to $661,423, a bit over $5 million today. The IRS only counted 533 taxpayers who made between $500,000 and $750,000 in 1960 — and only 508 taxpayers in the entire country who made more than $750,000.

How did George Romney’s tax rate compare to the tax rate of his fellow rich? George actually paid a smaller share of his income to Uncle Sam than his peers, mainly because he donated almost a quarter of his income to charity and church.

America’s 1960 rich in George’s $500,000-to-$750,000 cohort — a range that would equal from $3.8 to $5.7 million today — paid an average 45.3 percent of their incomes in federal taxes, after exploiting every tax loophole they could find.

The 1960 rich, even after adjusting for inflation, only made a tiny fraction of the incomes our rich today are pulling down.

The true millionaires of 1960 — the 306 taxpayers who reported at least $1 million in income, the equivalent of $7.6 million today — paid taxes at a slightly higher rate, 45.8 percent. These millionaires only averaged, in today’s dollars, about a little over $15 million each in income.

How does that $15 million average for America’s richest in 1960 compare to the income of America’s richest today? The 1960 rich, even after adjusting for inflation, only made a tiny fraction of the incomes our rich today are pulling down. Last spring, the hedge fund industry trade journal reported that America’s top 25 hedge fund managers averaged $882.8 million — each — the year before.

Their tax rate? We don’t know that for sure. But hedge fund managers exploit the same “carried interest” loophole that has proved so lucrative to private equity power suits like Mitt Romney.

The top 25 hedge fund manager federal income tax rate most likely floats between 15 percent — the same rate Mitt pays his taxes at — and 18.1 percent, the average federal income tax rate on America’s 400 richest taxpayers in 2008, the most recent year with IRS data available.

So let’s review the bidding here. Today’s top hedge fund managers make 59 times more income than the richest Americans in 1960, after taking inflation into account. Yet the richest Americans of 1960 paid three times more of their income in federal income taxes than today’s top hedge fund managers pay.

Next just because they pay a few million in taxes they shouldn't get a break on the percentage. I don't blame them for taking any deduction allowed I do.

Amy - you're simply repeating a lie that you heard on FAUX News (courtesy of Rupert Murdoch and the Koch Brothers).

Mitt Romney's income has not "already been taxed". See, he (and most other hedge fund and equity managers) don't take ANY of their income as wages (which would be subject to "regular folk" income tax rates as well as Medicare and Social Security taxes). Thanks to a loophole the GOP enacted for them, they can takes their wages as "carried interest". That money is not subject to ANY tax until they pull it out of their company vault, and then it's only taxed at 15%. ONCE,

Try not paying taxes on YOUR paycheck in the year you earned it and see how far you get. Oh, and you'll pay the "regular folk" rate, too.

And what about Romeny setting up a $100 million trust for his five sons? The campaign said the Romneys paid no gift taxes on the trust because they were able to use credits related to estate tax." See, that's the real beauty of having no "death tax" - you can transfer all the wealth you want to your kids by creating "living trusts" and exempting them from taxes as if you had really died! What a deal!

Romney is a wealthy man , no shame, a successful businessman, who make his fortune risking his money and his partners investing in companies that where in bad situations, some of them where too bad some other turn to be excellent investions, Obama did the same with GM the difference is that Obama borrow money from China ans still owe 38 billions of dollars. Kerry has Villas in Italy in the Lago Maggiori and also has Swiss accounts, like most wealthy Americans. However there are other kind of wealthy Americans like Nancy Pelosi who has a factory in Samoa and make exception to pay increase of the minimum wage to their workers, they are greedy liberals who use their power to exploit people and make their fortune.

I can't beleave how many religious bigots among liberals, are they the same group that call racist, homophobic to the other side. Nothing more than hypocrisy.

Poor Mitt. It's so hard to keep his funds straight. All of his rich friends told him about all of these cool deals in the Caymans and Bermuda. But when it is only a net gain of a few thousand here and a few thousand there, why be forced to report all of those little drops in the bucket? It's not fair. And those tough campaign disclosures - you include everything once and you get hung because you didn't declare it earlier. And to be misunderstood as perhaps someone that would prefer little fly by night companies in the Carribean or wherever as opposed to someone who would rather invest in America. That's not him - he's true blue. But he's got to make the best return and get the best tax treatment. Otherwise, if stuck with the Dow and the Nasdaq, his earnings might shrink to as little as 11 or 12 million a year. And that just won't feed the bulldog - least not all of the bulldogs in his four homes. But its his turn to be President, don't you see?

RealAmericanFirst, a little of the pot calling the kettle rusted? Amy is correct that Mitt pays income tax on regular wages. The fact that those wages are an insignificant portion of his overall income does not make that a false statement. And, I think she has valid points. Everyone is out to tar and feather Mitt because he only paid 14.6% on income and capital gains. Well, if he is paying what the tax code dictates, what's wrong with that. It isn't like he's one of the 47% of wage earners who only pay payroll taxes and didn't pay a penny in income taxes last year. In fact, based on statistics, a large number of the posters complaining about Romney paying $6 million in taxes last year didn't pay a dime outside of payroll taxes. That's like a roommate who only pay's for their car insurance complaining because the wealthy roomate isn't paying the entire rent when he can afford to.

As I said, that's just a lie spread by the Heritage Foundation via FAUX News.

Can you tell me exactly what portion of Mitt's income he paid taxes on as "wages"? Little to none.

no shame, a successful businessman, who make his fortune risking his money and his partners investing in companies that where in bad situations,

WRONG! Taking advantage of companies that needed capital to expand and in need of loans, after that, he would re-sell them. Once they were sold, if the company had the sightliest bump, they had to declare BANKRUPTCY, because they were in such much debt, they were incapable of paying their bills. And they did not even know who they owe the money, while Romney and his investors made many times the original "investment" that they put forth at the beginning.

Also, he would buy small companies that would be considered "competitors" for a fraction of the money -or at minimal cost- Then, he would just close a deal with the COMPETITION and close the original, small company KILLING A SMALL BUSINESS ENTREPRENEUR. this is how your hero works...

Irespond - One interesting thing to note about how Romney and Bain Capital "helped" those companies is that Bain depleted their pension funds and borrowed against the companies' assets - and then used that money to buy Bain Capital stock.

That boosted the value of Romney's and the other Bain managers' stock accounts, in addition to the millions in fees they paid themselves for "managing" all the leveraging and buyouts. Then they either sold the dry husks of what was left of the companies or sent them into bankruptcy.

                      Vulture capitalism at its finest.

The Wall Street Journal reports that 22% of companies bought by Bain Capital were in bankruptcy within 8 years.

And a great quote from the LA Times:

Bain Capital wants to see if you are bleeding, but instead of helping you it will put a bag over your head, stuff you into the trunk and will let you out only if you promise to do everything they say and never get sentimental about things like your community or your employees.

I'm less concerned about the taxes paid on his Swiss account and more interested in why he actually opened this account. It seems to me that if you want diversification of your account by adding international currencies, you use your stock broker to purchase mutual funds consisting of the desired currencies, or even the currencies themselves and store them safely away. If Mitt felt that this account was legal, ethical and moral, why the rush to close the account in an attempt to avoid disclosure on the forms required when running for the Presidency?

While we get a glimpse into Mr. Romney's finances, it gives us a view into a world most of us will never see - perhaps 99% of us. Tax rate less than 15% on $42 million earned over two years, taking your income as capital gains in order to do so. Use an off shore account to hide wealth and perhaps dodge taxes. I'm not going to say it is unfair - nothing in life is fair. However, if our great country has allowed you to accumulate this wealth, isn't it appropriate that your contribution back is in line with your wealth? If he was taxed at 30%, would it have really made a difference? I doubt it.

I know this though, I don't have the tax experience of H & R block, but I have to trust them to not make mistakes. I can't fathom an individual tax return of 500 pages either

Romney associate with Bain invest in more than 150 companies, not 100% turn out succesfull but balance was positive with a good success. The intention of the investing wasn't make money from the bankruptcy but reseal companies that succeed under their management. Staple, Domino Pizza, Martess Discouter , Artisan Entertainment are some of their success those companies create thousands of new jobs.

I want to see the comments of those who critisize Romney, what they say about Turbo Tax Cheater Gaithner.

                        @Amy3

"...according to Mitt Romney's tax return for 2010 he paid MILLIONS of dollars in taxes- do you think Warren Buffets secretary paid that much? No, she didn't so Mitt Romney and Warren Buffet do pay more- point 1."

Amy, dear, if you were paying attention you would have known that President Obama was speaking in terms of tax RATES (i.e. percentages). If you will recall he said that millionaires who make money from investments (capital gains) shouldn't pay a tax rate of less than 30% on those profits (capital incomes are currently taxed at a rate of 15%, BTW). OBVIOUSLY, no one thinks that Warren Buffett's secretary pays more in taxes (as a dollar amount) than her boss does. The president's position (a reasonable one, IMO) is that millionaires and billionaires should not pay taxes at a lower tax RATE than the people who work for them (who clearly make MUCH less), particularly if their income is derived from investments as opposed to earned income (hourly wages, annual salary, etc.). Willard's 2010 tax return indicates that he paid an effective tax RATE of 13.9% on investment income of OVER $20 million dollars, which is ridiculous considering that many families with an annual income of only $50,000 dollars pay taxes at a RATE (percentage) approximately double what Romney paid.

Okay, again you are WAY off on this point. The republiCON talking point you are ATTEMPTING to recite here is actually regarding corporate taxes. The 35% figure that you erroneously refer to as "income taxes" is actually the top corporate tax rate paid by a corporation on its earnings after dividends are paid to the company's investors. Faux Noise and Willard's campaign are claiming that Romney essentially pays 45-50% in taxes on investment income. They argue that the 15% capital gains tax paid on investment earnings actually represents a "double tax" since, prior to being invested, this money was taxed at the top corporate tax rate (30-35%). While this is a clever "spin" on the facts (well, at least clever enough to fool most republiCLOWNS including, apparently, you), this argument doesn't really hold water. Following this line of thinking, a middle class family with an annual income of $100,000 that pays federal income taxes at a rate of 35% (granted, this is extremely rare due to tax deductions/credits, but I am using this for illustrative purposes and ease of calculation), could then say that, in effect, they were taxed at a higher rate (say 45%) when you consider this same income was subject to state and local taxes. This same family could "spin" the numbers to reflect an even larger tax rate (say 51%) if they live in a state that charges sales tax (6% here in Kentucky) on taxable purchases. The point being, these are DIFFERENT taxes just as the 15% capital gains tax is a DIFFERENT tax than the 30-35% corporate tax. President Obama is simply making an argument about the UNFAIRNESS of our current tax code. Consider this: is it FAIR for someone like Willard to pay only 15% federal income tax on UNEARNED (investment) income of $20 million dollars, while an author/entertainer/professional athlete pays 35% federal income tax on the same $20 million dollar income they EARNED from WORKING? The answer: NO. How, then, could it POSSIBLY be FAIR for a secretary working for Mr. Buffett or Willard to pay a MUCH HIGHER tax rate on far less income? The answer: IT ISN'T. That is President Obama's point.

RealAmerciansFirst, I can see how you interpreted Amys post that way, after re reading it, I'm starting to think she may be on the wrong path. Regardless, I found copies of his returns and they are over 100 pages each. Although, through quick browsing, he didn't earn any wages as he is self employed. Over two years he earned somewhere around $600,000 through self employment. I am probably misreading, but, it looks like he is only paying 13.5% on that.

I don't quite understand the "double taxation" argument. If I loan money to you, you get taxed on wages you earn and then pay me interest which I pay a higher tax rate on. Investing isn't all that different. I'm loaning a company money, they pay taxes on the money they earn, then for some reason we make an exception and say the money is already taxed and needs to be taxed at a lower rate. The reality is that the Warren Buffets of the world don't become super rich sticking $2-10 million dollar salaries under their bed. And, even at 20%, an S&P average return would still beat out putting your money in a savings account or CD. Finally, these investment bankers listing money earned as capital gains is ridiculous.

With that said, we still have that 47% not paying any income tax. Historically, that rate has been around 29%. those 29% historically have had such low wages, it doesn't make sense to tax them. today's 47% isn't because people are unemployed, it's the Bush tax cuts. We need to repeal them across the board and make sure we as a nation all pay what Obama is disingenuously referring to as "fair share". Then we need to cut back on wasted spending.

OleBudo3, although Buffet's secretary probably does pay a higher tax rate than Romney, most Americans don't. Money magazine quoted 80% of Americans at a lower rate than Romney. The family making $50,000 probably doesn't pay any income tax. And, as a pre emptive strike, pointing out payroll taxes is a dead argument since that is money those families should expect to be paid back to them through social security and medicare payments. So, yes, Romney needs to pay a heck of a lot higher tax rate, but, then so do a good 18%+ of Americans making under $100,000.

                            #2.58 - Thu Jan 26, 2012 10:51 PM EST

I'm starting to see what Amy's talking about.

Mitt paid 13.9 percent of his TOTAL INCOME in federal income tax (plus another 0.01% in Social Security and Medicare taxes).

That means Mitt Romney paid 35% plus 15% in taxes at the federal level, or 50%, not the 13.9% that he reported to the government.

The rest of us paid something on the order of 15% in federal income tax plus another 15.6% in Social Security and Medicare taxes.

That means we are in the 50% of all Americans who pay no taxes whatsoever.

Go ahead, Amy, tell us why every man, woman, and child in America should pay a flat $50,000 a year in taxes apiece so that Mitt Romney's kids, who banked a cool $100 MILLION should skate without paying a DIME in taxes.

commonsense-not! The average taxpayer does not pay 15% in federal income taxes since 47% of filers pay none!! You do not pay 25.6% in SS and Medicare taxes. I believe you pay 6.2% for SS (the employer pays the other 6.2%) and about 2.5% in Medicare taxes. And remember Medicare taxes apply to ALL earned income (no cap) and now due to Obamacare it will apply to some unearned income. Get your facts straight. I know! You hurt your arguement when you use facts!!!

                                TES

Self-employed people DO pay the higher "combined" social security and medicare tax.

The reason the bottom, and I really don't care at this point whatever percent you pull out of your arse, don't pay "enough" in taxes, is because they are NOT paid enough in the first place.

Wages for the past 15 years have NOT gone up proportionally the same as corporate, business owners' income. If compensation for that 47% had gone up even just a little less than your income, maybe, just maybe there wouldn't be an economic mess and maybe, just maybe, a larger percentage of that 47% would be subject to tax thereby reducing your so called burden on the 2%.

Quote from Minneapolis Star Tribune November 3, 2006 Kevin G. Hall article. "Between 2000 and 2005, workers with four-year college degrees saw their wages fall 3.1 percent, adjusted for inflation. Only two groups, which together make up just 3.4 percent of the workforce, saw inflation adjusted wages rise. They were workers with doctoral degrees or specialty degrees, such as medicine or law, according to the US Census Bureau."

Minimum wage increase is not the answer but a higher tax rate for businesses WITH a credit back on how well they take care of their bottom 1/2 of employees, determined by compensation, thereby reducing the "effective" rate. If you pay as well as you say you do, you would probably get a credit while companies like Wal-mart pay more and reduce your and my burden. See, that's the whole point here, get those that do not provide well enough to pay more in taxes so you and I don't have to.

My mother talks of her father in Germany taking a wheel barrow full of marks down to the local grocery store to buy their groceries because of the economic collapse in Germany at the time. I don't want a revolution but when you, the 1% arrogantly think you deserve better rates, better things in life just because you think you earned it, not your workers providing for you, then the 1% in the past have been taken out by revolutions. Please learn and change your ways, like Moses warned Pharaoh.

JayCFO, have to disagree with you. Given your argument, we would expect somewhere in the low 30% range wouldn't pay income taxes. Not 47%.

I also think minimum wage increases are still in order after 12 years of remaining stagnant. The traditional argument is that a minimum wage increase results in an increase in wages up the food chain, but, we are seeing that without the minimum wage increase. After a rather significant increase by the Democratic controlled house (one of the few things they actually did right), we aren't seeing the a jump in inflation attributable to that minimum wage increase either - even with a 2% prime lending rate. Only concern that may hold true is that the small business bordering on shutting down may be pushed over the edge by trying to meet those wage increases. Regardless, we need to tax the rich more, but, we shouldn't do that without recognizing that many in the bottom half - and many of those calling for higher taxes on the rich - are getting a free ride right now due to the Bush tax cuts.

This is false and you know it! Most people like commonsense are not self employed and only pay the 6.2% SS tax and Medicare tax (not near 15.6%).

zoroaster How dare you point out the fact that those evil Bush tax cuts (you know, those tax breaks for the wealthy") benefited anyone other than the wealthy!!?? Just possibly he stands against the Patriot act before he renews it and then signs defense bill taking away more rights from citizens. All politicians change depending on the mood of the people because their job is to represent the citizens of their state or country.

Oops, looks like he's just like Gingrich, a liar that will do whatever he has to to pad his own bank account or whatever he wants regardless of the laws of America. If you are seeking the highest political office in this nation, you should at least have your ducks in order for the past 5 years or so, because everything will come out. Each others party will be spending in excess of $500 million to bash the other parties candidate, don't you think this will come up? If you ask me, this in itself should prove to everyone he's not fit to lead this nation!!!!!!!!!!!!! When will America grow smart enough not to let these people near Washington? All they care about is what's in it for them! Mike 277 you are 100% correct, it is tax evasion and that's exactly the thing that took down Al Capone. Hmmmm, just another crook I see. If only we could get some people in Washington who really care about the welfare of this nation and the whole of the people, we just might grow to be the nation that others grew to fear financially, in military strength, and in the rights of it's people.

A Romney campaign official emailed Thursday afternoon that Romney's financial disclosure form is now being amended with the government ethics office "to address this minor discrepancy" and "to deal with some other minor issues."

Sure, all this is just "minor" - and $374,327 in speaking fees is "not much".

It was more like a tithe to the Mormon church, it just counts as a charity. Also he gave MORE to the Church than he paid in taxes.

He doesn't stand for ANYTHING, except more money for rich folks at the expense of everyone else in America.

Kind of like Robin Hood, only in reverse.

Um, I would love this guy to tell us what he considers "minor."

Given Romney considers 350 K in speakers fees to be not much, minor could mean something other than the typical definition.

Minor, you know nisl - like the fact that 36 of Obama's own WH staff owe $833,970 in back taxes.

Kinda odd since they are all employed by President "fair share."

Of course that is 'minor' given that federal employees owe $3.4 billion in back taxes, right?

TAMPA, Fla. — As the Republican race moves to a state defined by the extremes in recession-era America — where the underwater and unemployed live just a few miles from the 1 percent — a sharp class divide is emerging between the two top contenders.

Mitt Romney’s crowds look like something out of the president’s suite at a University of Florida football game — prosperous, trim, Tattersall-clad, and supportive but not rowdy.

Newt Gingrich supporters, with their spray-painted signs, American flag tees, flip-flops and fanny packs, more closely resemble a group that would fit in nicely playing a few bucks at the dog track.

The only thing Spanky is trying to do is point out that posters on this blog focus like a laser on the other sides flaw while soundly denying or ignoring their own. Why isn't the fact that White House staffers owe back taxes a pertinent issue especially when the hot topic is who is paying taxes, who owes more and who pays too little. I would say the posters on here on the ones who are trying to "deflect" ANY conversation that might make their party look bad. My feeling is put all the dirty laundry on the table.

You seem to know many things about Romney's taxes. Just how much more does he own over and above what he's actually paid? And federal employees owe $3.4 billion dollars in taxes. Do you think Romney avoided paying that much in taxes, seeing he's not worth anywhere near that amount?

What is interesting to me is that the candidate and campaign were so flat-footed about the tax return disclosure yet apparently some had been planning for it since 2010:

Malt said he opened up the Swiss bank account, holdings in which are valued at between $1 million and $5 million, in 2003 on behalf the Ann Romney trust in order to provide “international currency diversification” for the trust's holdings. He then shut it down in early 2010, he said, and transferred the assets to the United States, noting that Romney was preparing to run for president at the time and he did not want to have it become an issue in the presidential campaign.

“I was worried that people would write stories not understanding this,” said Malt, who administers the blind trust on behalf of the Romneys.

Kind of reminds me of how Romney said he couldn't hire any undocumented workers because "he was running for President, for pete's sake." Not because it would be against the law or wrong, mind you.

Come on danger - I'm easy. Anyone But Obama.

Mitt is Obama, just like Obama is Bush. A clean line of the same policies, with little deviation.

                                                Newt is at least fun.

I support whoever is running against Obama once we get there.

Dangerfield: no you've got it wrong...Rush will support Newt only until Newt drops out (as soon as he gets north of the Mason/Dixon line) and then he will remake Romney as the REAL conservative in the race. Spanky is always on the extremist, knee jerk, 'anyone but Obama' end of her party...All Republican roads at the moment lead to Mr. Romney.

I did not say anything about moral equivalency. That would be like all the crowing about Obama got Osama was good but the death penalty is bad argument. What I said is get all the dirty laundry on the table so everyone can make their own judgement. The tit for tat on just about every single topic goes on every day on this blog by both sides. Please point me to where you slammed someone from the right on this and I will give more credence to your response and will gladly and humbly apologize.

Do any of you understand what the term "blind trust"- as in Ann Romney Blind Trust- means?

                                                Good lord, do you stretch.

And, dangerfield, dear- Spanky bringing up the back taxes owed by the staff of Mr. Fair Share is not just legitimate- it is a public service.

You see any of the "professional journalists" mentioning it? It's the kind of thing that would create something of a uproar, were it generally known- which is the point of keeping it on the down low, don't you think?

Do, please, keep trying to convince us you don't have a dog in this race. It's actually getting pretty comical.

                                                Ah, JAS1:

Romney's taxes. Just how much more does he own over and above what he's actually paid?

Approx. 20% MORE of his $58,000.00 per day income, which amounts to around (ballpark) 4.3 MILLION due the United States.

Curious... isn't that about the amount he claims to have donated to the Mormon Church?

                                                Any more questions?

Next meeting Obama has with his White House staff, maybe Obama can remind them to pay their taxes, you know, because it's the right thing to do. Because sooner or later the media might just start snooping around and asking questions, just as soon they get done with the important business of interviewing Newts ex's.

Stupid: Approx. 20% MORE of his $58,000.00 per day income, which amounts to around (ballpark) 4.3 MILLION due the United States.

You know this how again? Does the IRS know he owes this? Does Nancy Pelosi, John Kerry, Jay Rockefeller, Dianne Feinstein, and Warren Buffett's secretary know they owe this?

Or are you just projecting, because 15% is the rate for Cap Gains taxes, for everyone.

Moral equivalence is a term used in political debate, usually to criticize any denial that a moral hierarchy can be assessed of two sides in a conflict, or in the actions or tactics of two sides. The term originates from a 1906 address by William James entitled The Moral Equivalent of War, subsequently published in essay form in 1910.[1]

Yes thank you very much I do understand what moral equivalency is. From your own Wikipedia source it also states "The purveyors of the device usually start by believing their side is morally superior. They use history, possibly selectively, to cast the situation as a big-picture struggle against an evil power." That explains in a nutshell what goes on with 90% of the posts on this blog on every topic.

I still think getting all the true facts, positive or negative out whether it is relevant to the current thread or not gives you better information to form your own opinion.

                                                    Cute.

                                                    First, I'm not "bitter".

I'm damned mad. Mad at what has been done to my country by and for an inept, incompetent narcissist.

Mad at the media, for abdicating their Constitutionally enshrined responsibility to report in a clear, unbiased manner.

Say what you will about Bush- I certainly said plenty- there was no question of his having a lapdog media.

Think Bush appointees could get away with owing almost a million in back taxes?

Heck, do you think CLINTON could get off scott free?

                                                    Stupid: JoAnna, YOU ARE TROLLING!

I've asked you a simple question. Where are your sources that say Romney did not pay his full amount of taxes?

Stupid: I read and listen to a lot of sources other than Rupert Murdoch.

Good for you learned one. Care to share what sources answer the above question?

But lets be real, if only for a moment Stups. You don't have a source, at least not a legitimate one. You're just bs-ing us, making up some false claims, a little innuendo, maybe even a lie or two.

                                                    So you're full of it.

I wonder if this story will make the Nightly News, or any of the major news networks. It would be interesting, but I am not holding my breath.

I will say this, Mitt certainly likes his tax shelters. Lets see....Switzerland, the Cayman Islands, Bermuda, and Ireland. Could this list be any more of a stereotype for the 1%?

It's a topic for the general election (or would be if the first part doesn't change and the 2nd part is actually true) and also doesn't change. whew! That's a lot!) but has little pertinence when Gov. Romney is nothing but a seeker of the nomination...that''s why contrast and compare is not in order here...

He isn't running against the President or for the White House now, so save it for the General Election, if Romney is the nominee...

Frankly I don't care about any of this. It's all business and it's all legal and it's all capitalism. Corporations are cut-throat. Everyone knows this or should know this.

Now can we stop the "hate him because he's so rich" mantra now and get on with some serious issues.

Gingrich's character issues with his wives and children seem much more pertinent to me for somebody who's gonna be the leader of the free world. Why aren't we digging into all that stuff?? And what about Blingrich's lobbying and misusing the taxpayer's money??? Huh, huh????

We're much more condescending than most of the posters on this board, (except Spanky- he's got that common touch that neither of us can master), because we know that most of them don't THINK.

                                                        They feel.

That leaves the two of us- but you have chosen the course of being antagonistic toward everyone but the multiple poster- and I have stated, truthfully, who and why I am supporting.

                                                          Spanky's favorite pastime:

hummbird - the subject at hand was romney and taxes. when posters start questioning legalities and sources, the door automatically opens up to include other politicians. It would be hypocritical to ignore the other side.

                                                          Regardless, like the article says...

But Malt said there had been no attempt by the Romneys to conceal these investments, and all taxes on their earnings were fully paid.

Where is the IRS ruling on this not being true. BTW - better read up on blind trusts as well.

I'm no republican strategist, but revealing the truth about his returns has to be worse than keeping them secret. He earns $57,000 a day, doesn't do a second of what most American's would call work, and dodges a reasonable level of taxation using loopholes and offshore accounts. How could his campaign managers think this had the better risk calculation?

Do you judge all retirees this harshly or just ones that you feel have made too much money?

I love how you say he does no work- I would think that most people who worked hard and are able to retire off what they made or saved would say that they earned their retirement.

As for "dodges a reasonable level of taxation"- seriously?! Did you read the article? The article and everyone else who has looked at his taxes have all said that he pays all of his taxes. Americans have to pay taxes on all of their money regardless of where we put it- only in Europe could they hide money and avoid paying taxes on it. He ran for office against a Kennedy- if there was a problem with him not paying his taxes we would have heard about this way before now.

Mitt Romeny was in business for over 20 years and you hear nothing about any ethical problems or negative words about how he was in the business world during that time. He managed to bring the Olympics from a negative to a positive and they made a profit on it and then he donated his salary to local charity. He was the Governor of a democratic state and managed to take a state that was deep in the red and leave it in the positive with a large rainy day fund.

Newt Gingrich was the speaker for 4 years and a politician or history professor his entire life and in the 4 years as speaker he had 84 ethic allegations lodged against him, caused the worse election loss of seats in 64 years by a party that didn't control the white house, lectured on family values while he was having an affair, was involved in the house banking scandal of 1992 when he bounced over 20 checks, and the list goes on and on.

I don't get why people think Newt would be the better candidate...

My post was about public perception in an election year. While only a few are actually Occupying anything, most are concerned about increasing income inequality in the US. Gov. Romney pays an effective tax rate of 15% by using something that most would call a loophole (carry over interest). If he was paying closer to 35%, perhaps it would be much less of an issue. The country still hates bankers. The country still hates people that use clever accounting available only to the wealthy. I think his candidacy comes at an awkward time given the views of most about the haves and have-nots. Releasing his tax returns now is more awkward than a fart in an elevator. Less well-off evangelicals were just getting to the point of overlooking his Mormonism.

Nothing in my previous post was meant as an endorsement for Newt Gingrich. I think both men must feel like a false choice for Republican voters.

Bain in 1988 put $5 million down to buy Stage Stores, and in the mid-'90s took

                                                            bankruptcy in 2000.

                                                            * Bain in 1992 bought American Pad & Paper (AMPAD), investing $5 million,
and collected $100 million from dividends. The business filed for bankruptcy in

                                                            * Bain in 1993 invested $60 million when buying GS Industries, and received $65
million from dividends. GS filed for bankruptcy in 2001.

                                                            * Bain in 1997 invested $46 million when buying Details, and made $93 million
from stock offerings. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2003.

Romney's Bain invested 22 percent of the money it raised from 1987-95 in these
five businesses, making a $578 million profit.

Ans as far as the Salt Lake City Olympics goes - Romney was called in after all the scandal broke to give a "Mormon Face" to it - he did not stay long and left before the Olympics ended - and in the end these Olympics cost the Federal Government $ 1.3 Billion dollars 4 times the amount of any former Olympics held on American soil

                                                            Amy3-

                                                            1) What has piqued everyone's interest with regard to Romney's returns is not any wrongdoing, it's the fact that the law ALLOWS millionaires to pay a lower rate than their maid. We've just gotten a peek behind the curtain and, for republicans, this is a disaster. For years they have run on the idea that "job creator" millionaires are terribly overburdened by taxes, and now it turns out that it is the people who work for those "job creators" who are the ones who pay all the taxes while the millionaires pay a rate lower than a guy who flips burgers at "Burger King." No wonder we are $15 trillion in the hole. The Republicans have been lying all along.

                                                            2) No one thinks Gingrich would be a better candidate. Both of these leading republicans are mortally wounded, and because the republican party is in such disarray, no legitimate candidate in his right mind will run.

"Anybody but Obama" might sound like a nice slogan, but in the end, people have to vote FOR somebody, and they aren't going to vote for either of these guys. Which is just as well. If this is the best the republicans can do when they manage their own affairs, they are in no frame of mind to be running the entire country.

The majority of people that are complaining would do the same, but i bet at least half of them wouldn't pay their fair share. It would probably be hidden away and no one would ever find out about it. Give away anything to others would not be in their interest.

Mitt's baggage- he is successful. He made lots of money and he pays all of his taxes. STOP THE PRESSES!!I guess we would hate to have a successful President. He is mormon- seriously?! Gingrich is the one with 3 wives but the mormon concerns you? I guess for a christian an adulterous, immoral, unethical, career politician, currently catholic is such a better choice cause nothing says christian values like Newt.

For Romney it must really suck to be rich....all these vultures looking for road kill. I think he should take his millions of dollars and put it in a big vault where no bank can loan out his investment money to anyone trying to get a refinanced mortgage.

Anything else is just the right trying to claim its classwar fair and that we are envious. I have yet to hear a good explantion from ANYONE as to why investment income should pay less taxes. Tracy: All candidates are rich compared to average Americans. That's not the point and that's why your side has so badly misjudged this race. It's not about class warfare...it's about fairness. The tax code wasn't written into the constitution...it's evolved...and it's evolved in a way that is hugely burdensome on average working people for the benefit of those at the very top of the scale. The reason, remember, was supposedly that what benefitted the very rich would eventually "trickle down", that all of that wealth would create jobs. Now here's a prime example of what most Americans can clearly see, even if you are blind to it. Romney created great wealth...for HIMSELF...jobs were not the point and never were supposed to be the point of Bain. The Republican party has shown their genius for snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory. Field the weakest group of wealthy, white, insider politicians imaginable, running on destroying each other, fielding no new ideas and court the traditional elements of your party (extremists, racists, and haters.) Gee....wonder what's going to happen.

Just like a paycheck at work or income from your eBay business. You would only be paying "taxes twice" if you were taxed on the principal investment - which you are not. You are only charged Capital Gains taxes (15%) on new money earned from the investment, not the investment itself.

That there needs to be those who have money to invest in companies so companies then have the money to rent a location to house their business, hire employees to do everything from invent, engineer and manufacture and deliver a product. Which then creates a trickledown effect such as coffee and lunch shops opening up to feed those workers or companies to hire to landscape their office. Yes, I also agree. You need to have rich people to make a gamble and invest in companies to create all of what I just mentioned in hopes of getting paid dividends on the business they create – what I DON’T agree with, is those investors paying LESS taxes then me on the money they make off of said businesses. Mitt Romney would still have millions of dollars to invest if he paid the same amount in taxes as I did. Period. End of story. He would just have maybe one less car, and maybe one less vacation a year. People are morons who think tax cuts to the rich create business. THEY ARE NOT SPENDING IT ON CREATING BUSINESS. THEY ARE SPENDING IT ON THEMSELVES AND SPENDING IT ON CAMPAIGNS FOR POLITIANS WHO WILL DO ANYTHING TO FIGHT FOR THEM NOT TO GET TAXES MORE. Not to mention shipping American jobs across seas to balance their budget. The kicker is Politian’s who invest in these companies. Who have actually money or stake in stock in these companies. So they are benefitting from blocking regulations against them so they can do shady investing so the Politian’s can reap the dividends that these stocks pay until it all comes crashing down. (see real estate market circa 2008) They are fooling everyone.

yes, the government spends too much money

… That we like to blame on the poor and the entitlement programs for the poor. Is there problem with entitlement programs, yes. Do poor people abuse the system and remain lazy just because they can, yes. Then do something about it. Instead of taking away the money, or giving more money to the program – FIX IT. but it’s funny how no one cares we spent billions of tax dollars bailing out wall street – yet refuse to bump up taxes on those SAME wall street personal to REPAY the economy that they broke. or on unfunded wars. They would rather just take money away from the poor and ruin their ability to become something of themselves.

I would rather give my tax money to lazy poor people, then rich liars.

Seriously - watch the debates - they are making a mistake by breaking the 'code' and throwing real information out there instead of the normal "I'll create jobs"..."I'll cut taxes"...."I'll cut the size of the military".... blah ad nauseam -

Let's quit paying attention to the right hand and see what's going on with the left hand (or vice versa for those who are determined to keep discussions on a two-party argument track)

Ask your local politician to compare the local unemployement rate to the number of H1B visas issued and the population of "undocumented workers"

Ask you favorite campaigning politician what they are doing about the water crises being created from Pennsylvania though Wyoming and down to Texas - by the energy companies flooding water basins with fracking fluids (See GasLand for information)

Ask the next 'pollster' to give you a comparison of US dollars sent overseas vs. the funding requests from each state's transportation/education/health care sector.

Send a request to your political 'representatives' to disclose any/all investments in off-shore companies - then trace those investments back to military contracting corporations (Halliburton et.all)

The American People are responsible for the actions of their government - so be responsible!

And as far as Bain Capital "risking" their money - they never walked away without a sizable profit - especially after they raided the pension plans which cost the government big time However, the laid off employees only recouped $.40 on the $1.00

His wife said that it was a shame that they had release the tax records that they have already. "Romulian Romney" has a ton of money that he made that was never recorded correctly in his Foreign Accounts. That is now being investigated, and the "Romulian" should be worried! Progressive Power wonders how much taxes the "Romulian" pays on his home planet of Romulus?? Is the "Romulian" in the top 0.06% of his fellow Romulians on Romulus?? The "Romulian" loves the broken American Tax Codes, and has made million on mainly Swiss Accounts. The "Romulian" is the "Speculator and Chief" of the GOP/RNC. The "Romulian" is not said a word on creating jobs, keeping corporations in America, reforming the American Tax Code, or backing Financial Regulations that work. Why does the "Romulian" NOT want to release his past tax records from the 1980's, 1990's, and the 2000's??? What types of tax fraud has been going on in the "Romulian's" Taxes?? Who has been doing his taxes? In the past, and now recently?? Legally, the "Romulian" has not broken any known tax laws that America knows of. It is looking like the "Romulian" may have broken tax laws with his overseas accounts. How badly did his Bain Capital Tax Accountants break the tax laws?? "Romulian Romney" is so "Alien" to the economic struggles of Unemployed citizens, the Middle Class, the Working Poor, the uninsured, the elderly, and the disabled. Now he still feels that he is "Alien" to the current US Tax Codes! The good citizens of Florida had better read and understand the "Romulian's view on home mortgages. The "Romulian" has made it clear that he believes in letting people go into foreclosure, and the banks turn these foreclusures into expensive rentals. Notice the "Bain Trained" pattern of thinking from the "Romulian" Florida??

Sounds like both sides are dodging and weaving. The chain email that was copied is correct, but so are many of the concerns about what if anything else has been left out of Mitt's financial records. One thing though, the richer someone gets, the harder it is to keep a handle on exactly where all that money goes. It's kind of like taking the average middle class family and asking them to tell us how much exactly they spend on groceries, dates, movies, etc..There are those who can do it, but the average individual has no idea where most of their money goes. I'm all for a change in President though. I don't trust any of them but the fact that Obama has recieved far more money in campaign contributions from wall street scares me. It's hard to be partial when someone is giving you something. I actually respect both Obama and Romney, but they are both politicians so it is hard to believe everything either one of them says. I do see a lot of ignorance and hypocricy from both sides though. You have the liberal wack jobs that hate anyone even remotely conservative, and then you have the tea party head cases who don't want to compromise even if it means getting something done. In the end, they'll hate whoever doesn't agree with them 100% even though those at the far left or far right have the IQ of a rock.

Wall street gives money to both sides and gives the most to the guy they think will help them the most by making the economy grow not because they even like him or her. Thats just nonsense about wall street.
