Poll: Romney and Gingrich neck-and-neck in Florida

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney leads former House Speaker Newt Gingrich by two points in Florida, a margin well within a new poll's margin of error, reflecting a close race in the key primary.

Thirty-six percent of Republicans likely to vote in Florida's primary said they intend to vote for Romney; 34 percent would choose Gingrich, according to a CNN/TIME/ORC poll released Wednesday.

The poll underscores the tightness of what has essentially become a two-man race in the largest state yet to hold its nominating contest in the past month. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum has seen his numbers plummet to 11 percent from 19 percent in CNN's last poll of Florida, conducted Jan. 13-17. Nine percent of Florida Republicans voiced support for Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who is not competing in earnest in Florida's primary.

The new data reflect the closeness of the race following Gingrich's win in the South Carolina primary last Saturday; Romney had led the former speaker by a 25-point margin in the previous version of this poll, a lead that's shrunk to two points, within the five percent margin of error of this survey.

The poll is the first statewide survey in Florida conducted completely after South Carolina's primary, in which Gingrich trounced Romney by 12 points, reviving his campaign and seemingly claiming the mantle of the candidate who presents a conservative alternative for Romney.

In the intervening days since that primary, the Romney campaign has spent millions on advertising assailing Gingrich's record, and a super PAC spending on Romney's behalf has spent millions more. A pro-Gingrich super PAC has also reserved millions in ads, but it's still dwarfed by the spending done by Romney forces in the state.

Moreover, Romney's been voicing sharper criticism of Gingrich and his record in Congress and advocacy work for Freddie Mac, most pointedly in a high-rated debate on Monday night in Florida.

To that end, the CNN poll suggests that Romney might have regained some footing against Gingrich in recent days. While Gingrich led Romney, 38 to 32 percent, in Sunday's polling, respondents on Monday and Tuesday were slightly more for Romney, 38 to 29 percent.

FR --

While Gingrich led Romney, 38 to 32 percent, in Sunday's polling, respondents on Monday and Tuesday were slightly more for Romney, 38 to 29 percent.

Huh? Either that's a typo, or that's not "slightly."

But by all means, Spanky ... let's talk trains.

http://host.madison.com/ct/news/opinion/editorial/a-year-later-walker-rail-blunder-looks-even-worse/article_92953a56-2283-11e1-9eff-001871e3ce6c.html

But after the election, when it became obvious the Obama administration was going to send the rail funds to other states, Walker had to fall on his sword to save face. That prompted the Los Angeles Times to famously write "Thanks a billion, cheeseheads" after the money was sent instead to California.

Now, as other states move forward to upgrade their rail systems — the 110 mph train could be a reality by 2015 — Wisconsin is floundering. No 2,300 construction jobs, no track improvements, no plan.

In fact, the only new train running in Wisconsin is the toy train around the Christmas tree in the Capitol proclaiming the state "Open for Business."

"At least we have one train we can enjoy while other GOP governors get a real train," quips Rep. Brett Hulsey, D-Madison.

(emphasis added)

Huh. Who needs real trains, anyway?

Where pistons keep on churnin'
And the wheels go 'round and 'round
And the steel rails are cold and hard
For the miles that they go down
Without love Where would you be right now
Without love Where would you be now

You know, based on what is going on there, Obama should have elected to take the Intercontinental Railroad to Davos this week.
Geithner is getting his, er, brains handed to him.

Not much has changed since last March. Seems the powers that be still have serious questions about the numbers we send out- our stability- and the total lack of plan for fixing this mess. We are being reminded that we face exclusion from the bond market- and, trust me, folks. They are dead serious.

What the heck is Obama going to do if we have to start paying Greek interest on the debt he runs up?

The Fed, the dear souls, took the message to heart. They announced that, oh, by the way, the economy? Not looking like it will pick up any steam until late 2014. Maybe even later, according to 11 of the 17 committee members.

They still think, maybe, somehow, we could possible see three percent growth this year- or maybe next year. These are the people who confidently predicted three percent growth for Quarter III- we announced 1.8%- but very few people buy that number.

Still, the Fed is hoping Quater IV will somehow show two percent growth.

It probably will. . .until revised.

Hey how come Obama didn't talk about bullit trains last night?

Did Obama ever make the statement "The era of big government is over!"? I mean, why not! It couldn't make his speech more of a farce than it already was.

At least Chuckie Schumer thinks we're doing okay as a country, which would surprise the 14 million unemployed, but he still wants those taxes raised on those rich folks:

Republicans are fighting their own battle, once they nominate their candidate, things will change, with a 47 % of disapproval in the Obama's back pack is not going to be easy a fight against Republicans. Not even the millions of dollars from his friend of Hollywood and the comis like Soros with his moveon.org and his surrogates organizations or the killing of Osama will help Obama. Obama will be remembered like Carter , one term president never able to work with Republicans imposing his rule al the time " is my way or the highway".

By tomorrow, the venom from the lefties will be oozing. They will attack everything from his hair color to his waistline. This should be quite amusing. Too bad for Romney that his declaration that Newt "resigned in disgrace" was later debunked and stated to be inaccurate by Charles Krauthammer .... who actually seems to favor Romney.

Might I suggest you start actually researching the candidates instead of just listening to them talk before you vote for them? Newt Gingrich is an unethical, arrogant, egotisitical walking time bomb who has so many bags in his closet he had to store some in Calistas closet too.

I am not looking for the candidate to debate President Obama; I am looking for the man that can actually beat President Obama in a general election and provide sound and reliable leadership for this country after the election and Newt Gingrich is NOT that man.

84 ethics violations- have you ever looked into them? I googled the summary report that is available online. Did you know that they actually had 3 allegations against him but he had them combine them into one before he agreed to admit guilt? Ironically one of the 3 allegations was for providing false and misleading information or testimony to the Committee which is what I believe he went after President Clinton for. This report also states that they settled this matter because it was better for the good of the House which basically means that they cut a Washington deal for Newt. Speaker Gingrich and his lackies can say that these were political payback and if there were only 1 or 2 violations then I would be inclined to agree with that but when you have 84...really?! 84 ethic violation allegations in 4 or 6 years? This is what you want for a President?

How about the House Banking scandel that occurred in 1992- remember that? Another irony- Speaker Gingrich was intimating to South Carolina voters that there was something wrong with Gov Romney's tax returns and that is why he wasn't putting them out there and yet Speaker Gingrich bounced over 20 checks in the house and one of them was a check to the IRS! This is the person you want running the countries finances?

Another one for you: Speaker Gingrich was responsible for helping the Republicans regain control of the House; however, under Speaker Gingrichs leadership the House lost more seats in the next election than any party had in 64 years that didn't control the White House. Right now Republicans control the house and stand a chance at getting the Senate- I don't want to lose that because of Newt Gingrich's leadership.

I have only hit the highlights here and if I have found this with a few minutes of research on the internet then you know the Democrats can't wait to play all those lovely Newt Gingrich interviews and soundbites in the fall. Remember a little while back when he was interviewed and asked about his affairs he said how he was just too patriotic and loved his country too much and that was why they happened? I am sure that will be one of the many great ones we get to relive again. Newt Gingrich is a very divisive, arrogant, unethical hypocrite and embodies every negative stereotype of a politician.

Please- stop listening to what they say and start researching what they have done.

WOW! Talk about tunnel vision! Newt Gingrich won because he put a bullet right into the head of Mitt Romney with the movie "When Mitt Romney came to Town." That is the real reason. He did not paid for that movie. He has a super rich friend in Las Vegas that put that up for him. A super PAC

You remind me of the neighbor that will always criticize the neighbor next door, when his yard is full of junk. Look how dirty your "hopefuls" are. Dishonest and immoral, before you criticize President Obama.

  1. Hey MSNBC commentators: maybe we can move on now on the "hate him cause he's rich" mantra being preached against Romney each night on your shows. I was watching Chris Matthews comments last night and nearly puked at all the anger directed Romney's way and the defending of Blingrich all over the place.
  2. At least Romney has a somewhat decent character as far as we know!!
  3. Why don't you concentrate on the history that would be made if a crook like Blingrich were actually to be nominated??
  4. Ask Blingrich's ex-wives as to his character and fitness to be President. You know this IS gonna come out. I'm sure the Blingrich , his PAC money, and supporters will resort to calling them whores and liars but it'll be a little harder since he actually married them...
  5. Not to mention ethics violations, being kicked out of congress, lobbying to the entity responsible for the economic collapse, stopping the US government because of a personal slight, and spending half a mill at Tiffanys....
  6. Imagine telling your son or daughter "I want you to grow up and be like Newt!" I sure can't!!
  7. Now how is Blingrich gonna win a general election again?? Oh yeah - you billybobs still clingin to them fierce debatin skills ... lol

...energy quotes from last night's State of the Union address, starting with this "all-of-the-above strategy":

1. "With only 2 percent of the world's oil reserves, oil isn't enough. This country needs an all-out, all-of-the-above strategy that develops every available source of American energy. A strategy that's cleaner, cheaper, and full of new jobs."

This is important. In order to make the smoothest transition possible to a clean economy, we must be aware of prices and jobs. Renewables are already seeing victories in both of these regards — the falling priceof solar indicates a promising future for cost-competitiveness and increased development (JOBS). But we must not be distracted by industry blunders like Solyndra. Just as the president said, "some companies fail":

2. "Some technologies don't pan out; some companies fail. But I will not walk away from the promise of clean energy. … I will not cede the wind or solar or battery industry to China or Germany because we refuse to make the same commitment here."

If the United States is to become an industry leader, it has to step up and lead. Right now, we are in the race, but we are feeling the heat from China and Germany — both with strong innovation and manufacturing in clean energy resources. If we are not going to cede the wind, solar or battery industries to either of these countries, then we must learn from them. We must commit ourselves to the promise of clean energy.

3. "We've subsidized oil companies for a century. That's long enough. It's time to end the taxpayer giveaways to an industry that rarely has been more profitable, and double-down on a clean energy industry that never has been more promising. Pass clean energy tax credits. Create these jobs."

This is the commitment to the promise of clean energy that we must make. We must even the playing field and invest as much in the clean energy industry as we do in fossil fuels. As Obama makes clear, it's not about the politics. It's about this country's future as an innovator and leader...

Of course the president talked about Solyndra and XL pipeline, or did you think Mitch Daniels "pitiful" response was the real truth? LOL.

Jim,

So restating historical FACTS is an attack? Discussing his ethics violations, which are a FACT, is attacking? Telling the truth about his lobbyist connections is an attack?

So, according to you, we are supposed to completely forget about ALL history... ignore every FACT... and vote based on inaccurate information or pure emotions. That's how you think people should live? That's how you live?

Well... I guess it's true that ignorance is bliss.

Amy

You didn't look too hard. All 84 dismissed - for lack of evidence.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/govt/leadership/stories/101198.htm

and it wasn't just the Committee dismissing any wrong doing the IRS did too!

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/govt/leadership/stories/gingrich020499.htm

What Gingrich signed which is really signed off on was their anger that he had not provided complete information to the committee causing the committee spend $300,000 on investigating him.

http://ethics.house.gov/sites/ethics.house.gov/files/House%20Report%20105-1_1.pdf

His years of arm twisting fellow republicans cost him his speakership, because this was their chance to get him out of their way. The Geniuses who voted him down went on to make bad deals with the democrats leading up to the 1999 finance reform Bill. The problem with the bill wasn't repealing provision 2 of Glass-Steagall. The problem was the CRA enforcement strengthening that the democrats wanted as a condition of voting for the Glass Steagall provision. The CRA was the tool that got finance to follow to the letter the deficient government low bar loan requirements that lead to the housing boom and the bust in 2008.

BTW: The charges were brought by Pelosi who was on the ethics committee. Having them dumped wasn't good enough so she threatened Gingrich with releasing the investigation to the public. Ethics issues are supposed to be kept private unless they are proven and brought to a reprimand or Censure. Anyone on the ethics committee releasing ethics reports without a formal reprimand or censure is themselves guilty of violating their sworn ethics.

What you have is the party of no ethics going after people with flawed ethics. Based on polls and listening to people - more are figuring that out every day. The more that figure this out, the bigger the losses will be in 2012 for the Democrats.

It's easy to see why Romney will win. Romney would win 5 out of the 6 swing states if the vote were held today which means he beats Obama.

While on the other side, 60% of Americans hold an unfavorable view of Gingrich and Gingrich has 100% name recognition. That means if Obama goes against Gingrich all he needs is 40% of the vote to win. McCain at least held 45% of the vote in 2008, which means Obama would win by a larger landslide against Gingrich than he did with McCain!

Romney's private life appears to be well better than any president of the last fifty years or more. The bs about his wealth is just flat wrong, since Romney gives 70% of his income to government and to charities combined. Obama gives one percent of his, but he is only expected to spend other peoples' money, not his own. Typical liberal action.

MSNBC only uses the polls that favors what it wants YOU to believe, but ignores others.

The real poll is next Tuesday.

I am still curious why there hasn't been a peep on MSNBC about Obama having to prove he is qualified to get on the ballot in Georgia in court tomorrow morning. Maybe they just want to ignore the 27 different SSI numbers in 20 states, including his current from a state where he has never lived.

If YOU had 27 SSI numbers, YOU would be in jail for identity theft.

Sterling unless the federal judiciary gets the lead out Ron Paul can't even vote in his district whichever one that is. Texas can't hold any election except for local elections until DC passes on our redistricting. Whivh due to a federal panel of judges in San Antonio overstepping their authority and getting their hand slapped by SCOTUS is back to square 1.

        American-2051576:

There is no pipeline issue to talk about.

In case you don't follow the news, several states including Nebraska (with a Republican Governor) are still reviewing the proposed path for environmental and safety concerns. Nebraska is requesting a different path which affects its neighboring states. The aquifers in the west are critical to providing water for most of the population and food production west of the Mississippi so we're not talking about groundwater contamination that only affects a small community. It has to be safe and have built in controls to mitigate problems in critical areas. And although that we can all agree that a safe pipeline can be built with minimal impacts of leakage, that still depends both on who is doing the work and what specs they are using for materials and quality controls. Skimping on materials or inspections is not out of the realm of bad business practices that have occurred on other projects. It would simply be foolish and premature to approve a plan that doesn't yet have all the details about where it will be run and what the new estimates based on those changes will be.

This is like asking your city to approve a new building to be built without knowing where it will be built and not having the latest specs for how much it will cost, etc... That just wouldn't fly.

Yes, there are some people who object based on the oil extraction methods, but that's a small faction and a whole other story and has nothing to do with the delays by the states that are preventing this from being anywhere ready to approve at this point in time. By next year we should have a better idea of where this will be built and enough details to consider going ahead or not. I have little doubt that the right route and a comprehensive plan that addresses all the issues will be approved by Obama.

Trying to use this as a political talking point as a job killer at this unfinished stage of the project is ludicrous. Why not talk about the several million jobs Obama is killing by not building a bridge to China?

Please tell me you are happy with the Obama administration letting a couple of thousand guns go to the Mexican drug cartels and is stonewalling the investigation about it. Please tell me how stopping the the Keystone pipeline will help Americans get jobs. Please tell me how you could have a SSI # from a dead person in a state you never lived in, plus 26 other SSI #s from 20 other states without being charged with identity theft. Please tell me how, as an American citizen, you could get a Fulbright scholarship to go to an American university without being a foreigner.

Does anyone who voted for Obama care about all of the laws he and his administration has broken? Of course they don't. Has can read a speech and that is good enough for them.

And when his house of cards collapses, those who voted for him will wish he sold them some of those guns. But even if he did, they wouldn't know how to use them.

Romney and Gingrich neck-and-neck in FL...

Well, if it is a race between necks I'd give it to Romney. Gingrich's neck is pretty weighed down.

But Romney will win. It is his turn. If Gingrich wins Florida the Republican establishment will freak the blank out and a good chunk of the Democratic Party will laugh until it cries.

I am still in shock that people are actually voting for Newt. Just a year ago the GOP was chanting "not politics as usual"... now they are voting for the ultimate "politics as usual" candidate. In fact, if you look up "politics as usual" there is a big picture of Newt.

Seriously, Newt is arguably the most corrupt politician of all time... and Republicans have no problem with that. He represents everything that is wrong with our government... the only thing he cares about are lobbyists and his own greed. The man would sell our country, and his own mother, to lobbyists... and Republicans have no problem with that.

Putting Newt in the White House would be like putting Casey Anthony in charge of Focus on the Family.

Quite amazing that so many believe that Newt has no chance to get the Republican nomination while he has all the momentum and has to be considered the front runner. Assuming that Newt will get the Republican nomination, it wouldn't be the first time in history that an unfit candidate rises to the most powerful position in the U.S. Just ask George Bush, Jr., he'll explain to You how it can happen.

You can't just keep talking about taking food stamps away from people and putting black kids to work as janitors and yelling socialilst...some voters are just a bit more educated than that. He'll need some kind of campaign to reach them and yes, that will take some funds and some organization.

Gingrich is leading in the current delegate count, but in the projections of the races, Romney appears to be a head, but neither would have enough pledged Delegates to gain the Nomination. The Word is that the Moderates would welcome the opportuninty to choose someone other than Romney and the conservatives would like the opportunity to choose someone other than Gingrich.

This is what Peggy Noonan, a former Reagan speech writer and a solid, intelligent conservative, has to say about Newt:

What is striking is the extraordinary divide in opinion between those who know Gingrich and those who don't. Those who do are mostly not for him, and they were burning up the phone lines this week in Washington.

Former New Hampshire governor and George H.W. Bush chief of staff John Sununu told The Wall Street Journal this week: "Listen to just about anyone who worked alongside Gingrich and you will hear that he's inconsistent, erratic, untrustworthy and unprincipled." In a conference call Thursday, Jim Talent, who served with Mr. Gingrich in the House from 1993 through 1999, said, "He's not reliable as a leader." Sen. Tom Coburn, a member of the House class of 1994, called the former speaker's leadership "lacking," and according to a local press report, he told Oklahoma constituents last year that Mr. Gingrich was "the last person I'd vote for for president of the United States."

He will continue to lose to his No. 1 longtime foe, Newt Gingrich. He is a human hand grenade who walks around with his hand on the pin, saying, "Watch this!"

There's no comparison between Florida and California other than they're very large states. Florida is still very conservative, far older statewide, with pockets of moderates...but it's not born again far right conservatives that dominate the Republican party (think Jeb Bush). California is overwhelmingly a blue state with pockets of conservative voters and even more diverse than Florida.

That is what is going on. The republicans are paying attention to the Candidates and looking up their records and being very thorough. That is why Ron Paul and Santorum are still in the Race - no real reason to toss them, but not enough reason yet to make them the choice. Note. Santorum has pulled ahead of Paul and is nipping at the heels of the two Front Runners. Ron Paul isn't going to quit, but a lot of his support may fall off as time goes on.

You are welcome to those east coast old people. 20 yrs ago the most popular bumper sticker in Texas was: If you love NY take I 40 east. We'd already had enough of them telling us they knew everything better than we did. Newt does have help here if we ever get to have our primary. You mean when they realize that he actually pays all the taxes he is supposed to? And that he might pay 15% now on his taxes but he already paid taxes at the 35% rate when he earned the money as income? And that he gives more money to charity than he does to the government? Wow- sounds really evil now.

Money in the Caymen Islands? Oooo- big flipping deal. I don't care where his money is as long as he pays the taxes on it and he does. You want to argue it is tax deferred? You mean like a traditional IRA?! Oh my goodness the horror!

Amy: yes he paid all the taxes he legally had to, but boy are you mistaken that he paid 35% on all of that income. You obviously do not understand investment income and why he even has accounts offshore, or why they would even be controversial. (guess you think he just visits the Caymans and wants a bank there, right?) They are controversial because they are not subject to the same taxes as US accounts, which is why he was at least politically smart enough to close his Swiss accounts. Not all voters are like you and think it's irrelevant, regardless of the fact its legal...particularly when the man's sole claim to legitimacy as President of the free world is that he supposedly knows how to create jobs. He knows how to create wealth (which sometimes does and sometimes does not create jobs.) Lots of people who don't live off their investments work hard...there's a shocker for you....that's why this is an issue of fairness, not legalities.

They are controversial because they are not subject to the same taxes as US accounts, which is why he was at least politically smart enough to close his Swiss accounts.

Not Fair? The world isn't fair. Somebody lives a clean life, dies of cancer at a young age and someone who murders, steals, does drugs lives over 100 years.

Fair is a radical's tool to divide people. It create envy, jeolousy, hate, and intollerence for others.

BTW in addition to giving the government 14%, he gave about 15% to charity. The 15% to charity probably knocked about 3 - 4 points off what he paid. Add to that he paid somebody a large some of money help him put his money in places that are tax exempt such as government bonds, Treasury Bills - so the government is using his money anyhow. Then he also paid someone big money to put the income tax return together too.

@Amy, First and foremost we are not truly sure that Mitt made his money honestly!! And since he does not have to disclose "how" he made his millions of dollars 'overseas', there are records that show his business ethics were less than honorable. That being said, I have yet to witness an honorable politician, whether it be a Dem or a Rep. As for the name calling, the mud throwing, the bull crap that flied on this page, it is no wonder this country is in as bad shape as it is in. The very best thing that could happen, it to have every congressmen/legislator/prez all in one building and blast it out of existence and start fresh.

With a system in place where there are no elections, people serve their country like they serve on a jury, each state is allowed 4 members, that rotate every other 4 years, your name is called, you do your 4 years you go home you are done. No tax breaks, no life time payments, no nothing. As for the President, they serve flat 6 years They cannot spend more than the equivalent to one years wage as president on their campaign, all donations must come from individuals, not to exceed $1000.00 and only one donation per family, period. That would level the playing field. ALL capital hill employees should be making MINIMUM WAGE and be living in community housing while in session. No planes, special cars, per diems no perks!!!

We are drowning as a country, my grandchild's children will be paying off this presidents terms debt, which is completely disgraceful. The spending MUST STOP. Our senior citizens and the handicapped need to stop being paying the price for the overspending of government, non-US Citizens should not be collecting any SS benefits/food stamps/ medical care, not to mention the free housing/ free schooling. free business loans. That alone would save this county BILLIONS of dollars a year!!!!

Let talk issues rather personal life, who screwed who.. who really cares... we need to get this country back to a working country, where people can make a honest wage, for an honest days work, to buy a home that is not over inflated by 500%, and afford medical care.

And that is the reason that he was scared to death to show us how OBAMA is correct when he says that he does not pay the same amount of taxes as us. In SC he was as arrogant as to think that people would be ok when he was saying: "perhaps I will show my tax returns" as if he was talking to HIS STAFF or THE HELP in his house.

They all get the most possible for what the do and pay out the least possible. For the average citizen its' pay the most to get the least.

NATE SILVER'S FORECAST projects a seven-point Gingrich victory here next Tuesday, but he adds a bunch of caveats. "Our forecast model currently gives Mr. Gingrich a 75 percent chance of winning the state. That seems like too confident a prediction, frankly," he writes on the 538 blog. "On the other hand, Mr. Gingrich does appear to have a modest lead in the polls — and the nonpolling factors do not clearly favor one or the other candidate, in my view. So I would call Mr. Gingrich the favorite for now — but not a clear favorite." http://nyti.ms/w6huui

If that happens... Have you ever seen footage of a coliseum or large building being imploded? If Newt Gingrich wins Florida by a large margin the GOP will be imploded in a similar manner.

Just 31 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of Romney, the poll shows. Almost half, 49 percent, have an unfavorable opinion, and 21 percent said they have no opinion. Romney now holds virtually the same favorable and unfavorable ratings as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, whose numbers have also dropped over the past month -- suggesting that the ugly, protracted fight for the Republican presidential nomination is dragging down its two most prominent participants.

Mitt is a ghost, still here but really gone, propped up by a still humongous war chest and the Republican establishment's denial. His internals nationally have COLLAPSED. The belief that either Romney or Newton could win a general election even against a weak and vulnerable incumbent, after another SIX months of tearing each other down like this is foolish at best and electoral suicide if it comes to pass...

A brokered convention is a situation in United States politics in which there are not enough delegates 'won' during the presidential primary and caucus elections for a single candidate to have a pre-existing majority, during the first official vote for a political party's presidential-candidate at its nominating convention.

Once the first ballot, or vote, has occurred, and no candidate has a majority of the delegates' votes, the convention is then considered brokered; thereafter, the nomination is decided through a process of alternating political horse-trading, and additional re-votes.[1][2][3][4] In this circumstance, all regular delegates (who, previously, were pledged to the candidate who had won their respective state's primary or caucus election) are "released," and are able to switch their allegiance to a different candidate before the next round of balloting. It is hoped that this 'freedom' will result in a re-vote resulting in a clear majority of delegates for one candidate.

Superdelegate votes are counted on the first ballot. Although the term "brokered convention" is sometimes used to refer to a convention where the outcome is decided by superdelegate votes rather than pledged delegates alone, this is not the original sense of the term. Like a brokered convention, the potentially decisive role played by superdelegates can often go against the popular vote from the primaries and caucuses.

Nope. The party can "draft" someone who has not appeared on a single primary ballot.

...but at this point Newton will have to do something to lose...

If anyone could blow his chances in Florida it's Newton. If a true dogfight were to break out tomorrow night in the next debate who would be more likely to fly completely off the handle, Newt or Mitt?

Dangerfield - Yeah, I saw that, but wikipedia doesn't specify what they mean by "Candidate." My understanding is, and I could be wrong, the list of candidates is restricted to the people who won delegates.

It is about DELEGATES...Va is on SuperTuesday and has 49 delegates up for grabs, so not really that much. The question is where will the race be BY March 6th? Will it be a neck and neck battle? Will Newton, or Romney be cruising to the nomination, or will the landscape be utterly unrecognizable?...

My guess is that if anyone but Romney is racking up the delegates at a rate that spells nomination, the Republican establishment will break the glass, and J-E-B will either accept the call to serve his party or not.

                        ---------------------------------------

yep you're wrong..after the first ballot delegates are free agents, actually they are pretty much free agents all the way, but are "sort of" obligated to vote the way their state voted on the first ballot. It's the PARTY's convention, their rules and they can change them to accommodate their needs if needs arise...

                          1) Newt will be in jail by 2013 for tax Fraud (note Andrea Mitchells report) ... That is the Nancy Pelosi bomb but the IRS isnt going to hit him until after he gets the nomination. Newt is and was a tax cheat (one of the violations)

                          2) Newt said he didnt do lobby on The Mortgage Meltdown ... yet the fact is He worked for the Lobbyist Department ... that only hires lobbyists ... if it smells like a fat pig, looks like a fat pig, and sounds like a fay lying pig .. Its Newt Stinkrich ... once a liar, always a liar and he just lied thsi past week to aall Americans.

                          3) Open Marriage: Its still open people ... He just had Sarah Palin Monica him (Sarah actually is too dumb to know thats nasty) Newt is a serial cheat and is still cheating and as long as she has blue boxes that ugly Monty Burns/Larry King look alike Prostitute Calista could care less.

                          4) Newt made American Taxpayers pay for his prostitute ( The Hooker Calista had a no show up high pay job at the DOA that Newt required they give her) and he nor she paid that money back to teh American Taxpayer.

                          5) Newt is a short pompus, hypocritical fat liar. I a Republican will vote for Obama if Newt gets the nomination ... he is a totally corrupt, morally deficient piece of garbage

Phinephancy, You took my thoughts from the other day on the Va. Ballot. But Dangerfield might not be wrong on a brokered convention. An Jeb Bush is a different Bush. He has a pretty decent record in Fla. It would be interesting to see all his children and grandchildren out on the campaign trail speaking spanish. After all his wife is from Mexican descent.

Although nobody talks about it Sometime in April or after when ever the federal judiciary gets it's act together. Texas will have it's primary. With a large delegete count and no true attachment to Ron Paul. Also since we will have seperated the local primaries and only the federal primary will be left the dems will be free to vote in the republican primary normally not a factor because of local elections.

This talk about Jeb Bush is an interesting take. I never cared for him as governor, but I have to say, I try to see a possible future with any of the current Republican candidates and it's a little scary. Jeb may not be my preference, but at least he's workable. What a toss up - for the sake of our country,I actually want the best Republican candidate to be chosen as the Republican nominee. But for my candidate's benefit - I hope they don't go for Jeb.That might be a real race.

Romney was pretty effective in Iowa using negative ads against Gingrich, so it'll likely work again...but who knows? But if Gingrich doesn't pull it off, it'll be pretty hard to gain any momentum when he's not even on the Virginia ballot (oops). Then we'll have to deal with plastic-smile Romney for the GOP candidate.

The FL primary winner will receive all 50 delegate votes from FL.

State chairman must vote the whole 50 votes on the first three ballots for the candidate, unless the candidate releases these votes.

Is it 50? That is right, they lost half their delegates when they moved up their primary.

I must admit, I'm a bit giddy about Newt pulling in 50 delegates. Currently the delegate count is Newt = 23 Mitt = 19 Ron Paul = 3 and Santorum = a frothy 13. If Newt won 50 in Florida the press would go apesh*t and the Republican establishment would drink itself into a coma. Go Newt!

If Newt Gingrich takes the Republican nomination as their candidate for the office off President of the United States, you are staring at another four years of Obama, in that office.

Gingrich shall pull to himself, all of the Far Right, while conservative and moderate Democrats shall run away from Gingrich far and fast, into Obama's welcoming arms. Romney shall take all Republicans, and enough disenchanted Republicans, to sweep the election.

Gingrich = 4 more years of Obama. Count on it.

I know facts are one of those things that the Press hates to report on at any length, but....fact: Romney has already gotten more than 250,000 Florida voters to vote absentee, presumably, for him. You don't get to change your vote once you have sent it in, unless of course it is a Democrat Primary and in Illinois in which case anything goes. Starting that far behind is a pretty difficult, if not impossible, number to overcome even in a state as big as Florida. And, in Florida only Republicans get to vote in the Republican Primary, which I know is a novel concept. Further, Gingrich's head has gotten so big with all of the Press adoration lately that it will explode any day now and his campaign will be over. All of this hoopla is just an excuse for the Press to report on something. Even the remote possibility that Newt might actually win the Republican nomination is something they just cannot ignore because it means their guy, Obama, would win in a landslide. Frankly, I think they are still in shock at the utter stupidity of the people of SC and Republicans in general and the possibility that they just might hand the election to Obama in a way they never thought possible.

The Florida primary does NOT count. It does not award any delegates. The GOP National Committee elites are scamming the system forcing Florida and Missouri to have a caucus at the very end of the election to award delegates. We will be lucky to have even 2 candidates left by that time........ real convenient.

I have never seen such blatant manipulation by the GOP party elite and the mainstream press. It is embarrassing. Florida is a Beauty Contest with no meaning but I would bet 2/3 of the voters think it is real. Florida will also be lucky to have 1/50th the turnout for a lame caucus that late in the election process.

This is why most candidates are bypassing Florida... for now.

"The only candidate we were worried about was John Huntsman." Their only choice with a brain was ignored by a bunch of people without them, how ironic.

"nisl" is right and funny, but the GOP cant pick a canidate so there isn't anything to be afraid of

A brokered convention could again produce Jon Hunstman. Along with Jeb Bush or maybe both on one ticket.

Looks like Mitt is history, he hemmed and hawed his way out of the nomination being undecided what to say about his income taxes. I know that what he did was all allowed by the tax code but this time the OWS got it right. Only the 1 % could pay accountants to figure out how to used the tax code for the Cayman Islands ploy.

That gives Newt the nomination. That means the GOP is finished for 2012 and Obama is good for a second term. Even the GOP regulars won't vote for Newt, how can they expect independents and dissatisfied Demos to vote for him?

At least we don't have to listen to more of the political babble. "Happy days are here again."

I don't care if Newt had an affair anymore than I cared that Clinton got blow jobs in the Oval Office... I care about political experience. Incidentally, Liberal Politicians do not have the market cornered on morality. John Edwards was having a love child, and spending campaign funds on his videographer while his wife, Elizabeth was dying of Cancer...

True, but John didn't run as the "Family Values" candidate. And I didn't care that Clinton was having some fun in the Oval Office either, but Newt sure did.

Gingrich is a proven cheater, liar, and hypocrite. The fact that he is tied with Romney shows the sad state the Republican party is in. I am firm believer that people get what they deserve. And, Republicans deserve Gingrich....I just hope this country does not.

Newt may be everything you say but for many of us he is the only candidate willing to speak out for us. Four more years of Holder's DOJ and we'll be holding prayer services in basements with lookouts.

Why hasn't any one mentioned who Newt really is? Does any one want someone that historically has sold out the ones he is supposed to be representing simply for a few million bucks. He has proved he is NOT trustworthy on any level. While Mr. Romney is squeaky clean, he is not by any means conservitive. Rick Santorum, should be in a sanitorium. And while Ron Paul has great ideas that should have been instituted sixty years ago. To try that now would surely be the downfall of this country. If the GOP can't come up with someone worth running, We'll have four more years of you know who.

Ron Paul is the only one who consistently speaks truth to lies. Have faith in yourself, your family, your friends and your neighbors, in a platform that is firmly planted in the truth, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. So, Obama wants to start a class warfare battle and pit over 200 million working people that made less than 10 million with those few that made more. Obama is dillutional, misguided, distorting the realism. This guy makes no sense. Don't fall for his "woe is me" and wealth redistribution crap. He has to be sent packing in November.

So, you think that someone making $1,000,000 a year and only paying 14% and another making $90,000 and paying over 25% is OK? Maybe YOU need to be sent packing in November. All Obama is saying is that it should be fair. Those making more should pay more. The $1,000,000 earner paying 30% (sill keeping $700,000) is not gonna feel it as much as the $90,000 paying 25% (keeping $67,500 - tough to keep a family of 4 or more going on that).

As long as Obama and his party are sucking up lobby money from Goldman Sachs, the FED bankers, Fannie/Freddie and everyone else on Wallstreet nothing will change with any "tax plan". Both party's will right the loopholes BEFORE the tax law will be written....... as always.

The only thing that will come from a "tax the rich" program is what we always get... longer employee hours, lower employee wages, less medical benefits and now zero retirement. Whatever is left over as further taxation will be passed onto the consumer with higher prices.

We cannot have the President and Congress taking lobby money from the very people they are supposed to extract more tax money out of. I mean it does not even make sense that after taking billions of dollars over the last decade from these wealthy people and their corporations etc that somehow THEY would get screwed in this deal.

Obama had his party minions hosting $3500 a plate dinners to campaign money. Just what do you think these people expect back??? Higher taxes? Bwaa ha ha ha

While we continue to elect politicians who take lobby money there will be no change. Ron Paul has not taken a dime in lobby money over a 30 year career.

Obama has been licking their boots for 3 years now and is in the front seat of the Bilderberg limousine while Romney and Gingrich are fighting over the back-seat.
