Obama stands by energy initiatives amid GOP criticism

President Obama refused to back off his support for clean energy initiatives in his State of the Union address, pushing back against some of Republicans' fiercest policy criticisms of his administration.

Obama called for an "all-of-the-above" energy strategy in the speech, promoting the work his administration has done to ease exploration of oil and natural gas. But he doubled down on new incentives for clean energy research and employment amid Republican criticism over the past year on the administration's approach to those initiatives.

The president calls opportunity for all the "defining issue of our time" in his State of the Union Address.

"I will not cede the wind or solar or battery industry to China or Germany because we refuse to make the same commitment here. We have subsidized oil companies for a century. That’s long enough," Obama said. "It’s time to end the taxpayer giveaways to an industry that’s rarely been more profitable, and double-down on a clean energy industry that’s never been more promising. Pass clean energy tax credits and create these jobs."

That section of the speech seems intended to address some of the most withering criticism from Republicans, who have launched an investigation into whether the administration expedited clean energy loans to Solyndra, the now-defunct clean energy company backed in part by a major Democratic donor.

Moreover, Republicans have loudly criticized the administration's decision to reject an application to build a major transnational oil pipeline between the U.S. and Canada. Republicans said the pipeline was poised to create thousands of jobs.

Obama also took steps to address climate change, decrying Congress for failing to take charge in the battle against global warming. (The Democratic-held House passed a cap-and-trade bill in 2009, but it failed in the Senate despite Democrats' additional control of that chamber.)

"The differences in this chamber may be too deep right now to pass a comprehensive plan to fight climate change. But there’s no reason why Congress shouldn’t at least set a clean energy standard that creates a market for innovation.  So far, you haven’t acted," Obama said. "Well tonight, I will.  I’m directing my Administration to allow the development of clean energy on enough public land to power three million homes. And I’m proud to announce that the Department of Defense, the world’s largest consumer of energy, will make one of the largest commitments to clean energy in history –- with the Navy purchasing enough capacity to power a quarter of a million homes a year."

what do we make with a barrel of oil?

    http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_products_do_you_get_out_of_a_barrel_of_crude_oil

Every 42-gallon (159-liter) barrel of oil can be refined into

    • 19.4 gallons (73 liters) of gas,
    • 10.5 gallons (40 liters) of diesel, and
    • 4.1 gallons (16 liters) of jet fuel, not to mention lots of other marketable stuff.

Every 42-US-gallon barrel of crude provides a little more than 44 gallons of petroleum products. This is gained due to processing of crude. From one barrel we get (in gallons):

    • 7.27 gallons (27.5 liters): Other products (feedstocks for petrochemical plants, asphalt, bitumen, tar, etc.)
    • 1.72 gallons (6.5 liters): Liquefied Petroleum Gases (LPG)
    • 3.82 gallons (14.5 liters): Jet Fuel
    • 1.76 gallons (6.6 liters): Heavy Fuel Oil (Residual)
    • 1.75 gallons (6.6 liters): Other Distillates (Heating Oil)
    • 9.21 gallons (35 liters): Diesel
    • 19.15 gallons (72.5 liters): Gasoline

From petrochemical feedstocks many everyday-life products are then obtained. Some examples are:

    • fertilizers for agriculture
    • plastic toys and gadgets (bags, computer cases, etc.)
    • bubble gums
    • car tires
    • perfumes
    • petroleum jelly
    • ammonia
    • washing liquids

If I know correctly then, 1 Oil barrel = 42 US gallons which in turn = 158.9873 litres, which is approximately 59 litres.

    Answer

On average 20 gallons of gas per barrel. See the California web site: www.energy.ca.gov/gasoline/what's in a barrel oil

Americans consume petroleum products at a rate of three-and-a-half gallons of
      oil and more than
250 cubic feet of natural gas per day each! But, as shown
here petroleum is not just used for fuel.

Now would be a good time to cut all funding to the EPA.

Then after we dump Obama, we can take a look at it again and set up some guidelines by congress, not Obama bureaucrats

Well the solar company owned by the French oil giant Total is doing quite well with the contracts they are getting from DoD. Think about what he said last night about DoD and green energy.

How sad all of you deniers are.

If you had your way, there would have been no research, no invention, no new ideas. None of the advantages or comforts we have today.

All because none of you is willing to try something new. All of you are critical of anything different.

            Ver sad.

              Fielden,

That's somewhat narrow-minded. What I want is the drunken sailor spending by our government to end, useless regulations (and the regulators) to be rescinded (don't worry - the regulators can then get real jobs that add to the ecomomy rather than restrict it), and have the private sector to be in charge of research, invention, and new ideas.

I am all for clean energy just because fossil fuel is finite and it seems that we are trying to use it up as soon as possible. When it is gone, it is gone.

Global warming is a big question mark. I read a paper that claims that the green house gas theory violates the laws of thermodynamics. I think that the paper is controversial but there are explanations of how heat transport in the atmosphere works that do not require a green house gas theory.

Another paper claims that given the current green house gas theory, if the entire world followed the Keyoto Protocol, it would make only an insignificant difference in the climate of the earth.

Who is going to pay for all of this? The President promised that the the 2012 federal deficit would not exceed 229.27 billion dollars and to do that the federal government has to spend more than 1 trillion dollars less in 2012 then it did in 2011. Our federal government needs to spend less money, not more.

@Norm_L, The only reason oil usage has dropped over the last 3 years is because Obama has put so many people out of work no one can afford to buy gasoline. If so called "green energy" was so easily obtainable we would have been using it for decades. There are already hundreds of abandoned wind mills in Europe because they are not practical. The reason they are being built here is because tax payers are subsidizing their cost. Using natural gas for power will drive the cost up for millions heating their homes with it. So far the only way any "green energy" programs exist is because tax payers are paying their way. They can not exist on their own. It is a pipe dream pushed on the American public by ultra liberal tree huggers.

Obama's decisions on the enviornment, were based on his major campaign funding would be cut off if he did not shut down the oil pipeline, by the tree huggers groups. Also his moneyman Warren Buffett owns the railroad that carries the oil in tankers? Plus, his boss and moneyman George Soros has Billions invested in Brazil. Guess where we will be getting our oil? The natural gas iniative. Guess who stands to make more Billions? George Soros again. Bet the media did not disclose that bit of information.
