The Week That Was: A look back at a wild week

It was maybe the busiest week of this campaign, leading up to the South Carolina primaries. There were two debates, two candidates dropped out, and the Iowa caucus results were reversed, stripping Mitt Romney of a win and giving one to Rick Santorum.

Discuss this post

There was enough 'material' over this past week, it will undoubtedly fill three or four chapters in the book of; "You Just Can't Make This Stuff Up"!

The entertainment value alone was PRICELESS!

Hey GNOP supporters - how's the ABO-2012 thingy working out for ya? lmao!

Time for some more *popcorn*

Feisty, I'm headed over to the DDI, looking forward to sitting by a big fire sippin' a drink of choice. Also bringing with me some fine salsa and guacamole and hope you have some good pizza.

I also would like to hear a little Etta James on the ol' juke box, followed by some Al Green...'Everything's gonna be Alright'.

A very good weekend friends, tomorrow will be an interesting day.

I'll have to check with my delivery driver - they are announcing travel times on the news right now - in some cases a normal 1/2 hour drive is over 4 HOURS!

Here's the Etta & Al you requested;

Would you not think that, when a candidate or his/her representative made a totally ludicrous state, ent, the media would be all over it?

How about if it was a blatant lie? Think the Insult to the intelligence of the media and the electorate might warrant a mention?

I do- the first class "professional" journalists on this site do not.

You mean like Bush that spent 3 of his 8 years (35%) away from DC?

While he was there he found time to ride his mountain bike 20 hours a week and read one book every 6 days and didn’t take daily briefings on Sundays.

In 20 hours a week our President could get in 5 rounds of golf !!!!!!!

Everyone, but you liberals, has heard that Bush did work at Camp David and at his own home in Texas.

Just ask all the dignataries and other politicians who went there on official business.

Too bad Obama couldn't conduct his business at Disney World. I hear that Mickey Mouse and Goffy demanded too much of his time.

I never said he didn’t work while away from DC. All Presidents put in a lot of work while away from the office.

He averaged one trip to Texas every 5.5 weeks – how much did it cost me for those 77 trips?

Just how much extra taxpayer money was spent to spend all those staffers back and forth to Camp David and to his TX ranch??

Dennis,

how much did it cost for Bush to go to Texas, you ask??

#3.12 - Sat Jan 21, 2012 11:44 AM EST

You have the patience of a Saint for debating with Leona the Loon...

how much did it cost me for those 77 trips?

Asked & answered:

During Bush’s two terms, the cost of operating Air Force One ranged from $56,800 to $68,000 an hour. Bush used Air Force One 77 times to go to his ranch in Crawford, TX. Using the low end cost of $56,800, Media Matters calculated that each trip to Crawford cost taxpayers $259,687 each time, and $20 million total for Bush’s ranch flights.

If cost of the flight was the only expense involved to taxpayers Bush’s vacations would still seem rather economical, but there is more, much more. Unlike the Obama’s $4 million Christmas vacation price tag, which includes the cost of everything from transportation to accommodations for the First Family, the White House staff, and the White House press corps, Bush’s numbers only include the cost of flying the president to Crawford. The cost of transporting and accommodating staff, media, friends and family is not included in Bush’s vacation numbers.

In response to growing criticism that the president was on vacation too much, the Bush administration adopted the Rovian tactic of scheduling, “work events,” while the president was in Crawford so that they could claim that President Bush’s vacations were working vacations. During his infamous pre-9/11 August vacation, the AP reported that, “Using the ranch as a base, he will promote White House initiatives in Rocky Mountain National Park, Denver, Albuquerque, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh and San Antonio.”

Bush’s “working vacations” cost taxpayers a small fortune in travel costs because President Bush and his staff would make day trips on Air Force One all across the country in order to counter the criticism that he was on vacation too often. For eight years, Bush essentially used Air Force One as his personal vacation taxi service.

What was also not counted in Bush’s Air Force One mileage total were the vacations where Bush flew to Crawford from Camp David such as the following via Media Matters:

In a December 27, 2001, Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Sun-Sentinel article (accessed via Nexis), national correspondent Jeff Zeleny reported “[a]fter spending Christmas at the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland, the president and first lady boarded Air Force One to travel to their ranch near the village of Crawford.”

And on December 26, 2007, The Associated Press reported that Bush took “Air Force One to fly from his Maryland mountaintop retreat to his Texas ranch here to see in the new year.”

FactCheck.org was writing about the anonymous chain emails about Obama’s travel costs and noted in July that the stories about Obama’s travel expenses are, “part of continuing pattern of false and misleading claims about the travels of the president and the first lady,” and that Obama used Air Force One less in his first two years in office than George W. Bush did.

It’s a funny thing how that “Senate” thing works, where you need 60 votes to override a filibuster.

Republicans might win the Senate but will be far short of having enough votes to overturn anything.

The best you can do is to defund it but you will not be able to overturn it regardless of what your Presidential candidates tell you.

Leona, why is it not OK with you for President Obama to take a trip with his kids? I think everyone works better when they take a break now and then. This is also the time, as Sasha and Malia grow up, that memories are made. Both girls will be out of the house in a few short years. Should their childhood be put on hold while President Obama is in office? Not only has he taken less vacation time up to now as Bush had at the same time in his presidency, he has also gotten more done, including repairing our relationships with other countries. I really think he has taken a normal amount of vacations/trips compared to other presidents before Bush.

      Bethie,

With all due respect to your opinion, Obama is President of the U.S. ! You're worried about his "memories" !!??

If he wanted to vacation and play golf so much, there are many other jobs out there for Obama. Add to his vacation time all his fundraising time. We tax payers shouldn't be paying for him to constantly fly all over and fundraise.

One big reason Chris Christie didn't run for President is the fact that he wants to spend time with his family.

        #7.3 - Sat Jan 21, 2012 3:15 PM EST

Ignore Leona. She didn't care how much vacationing and fundraising Reagan and Bush did, and she knows it.

Our country is healing, and we’re heading upward from the very deep and very wide hole the Bush Administration dug for us... it's been a slow recovery, and we're not quite there yet, but we're heading in the right direction!

Obama is working for the middle class, he's on the side of hard working Americans and those less fortunate... we need a second Obama term to ensure our country is on solid footing. We need the Affordable Health Care Law which will enable every American an opportunity to acquire affordable health care... by the way which should be a right not a privilege; we need a large infrastructure plan which will put millions back to work; we need fair tax policy, tax breaks for folks making less than $250,000 and slightly higher taxes for those making a million+; and, we need to preserve Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, however some adjustments should be made, i.e. means testing and gradually increasing the eligibility age.

Obama stands for the above and with Dems’ out there campaigning and voting we can take back the house and increase our numbers in the Senate... then we'll see real change in this country.

On the other hand... if the GOP take over the white house be prepared to see the Affordable Health Care law be repealed, and we'll be once again at the mercy of big insurance companies; be prepared to watch Medicare and Social Security privatized; and, be prepared to see the tax rate for our dwindling middle class increase while the tax rate for the top two percent decrease...

Under a GOP led administration the middle class and our seniors will lose their safety net, they'll have higher taxes and the rest of the dwindling middle class will be reduced to accepting minimum wage jobs... and the rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer!

THINK TWICE BEFOR YOU PLACE YOU VOTE... do you want a GOP at the helm driving in reverse, or, do we NEED President Obama to continue navigating the ship back to prosperity for ALL Americans? I for one am voting for Obama!

Obama/Biden are for the 99% -- The GOP are for the 1%
