Gingrich angrily rebuffs questions about ex-wife

At Thursday's debate Newt Gingrich slammed the news media for focusing on accusations by his ex-wife that he requested an "open marriage." NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

Newt Gingrich opened a pivotal Republican presidential debate with a fiery attack on the media for publishing stories regarding new allegations made against him by an ex-wife.

Gingrich assailed, in no uncertain terms, CNN moderator John King for opening the debate by asking Gingrich to answer allegations made by his ex-wife, Marianne, in an interview with ABC News, saying the then-speaker of the House asked to engage in an "open marriage," or else he would file for divorce.

"I am appalled that you would begin a presidential debate with a topic like that," Gingrich said, earning wild applause from the audience. "To take an ex-wife and make it two days before the primary a significant question in a presidential campaign is as close to despicable as anything I can imagine."

Gingrich disputed the allegations as "false," and his three fellow Republicans onstage resisted piling on. ("Let's get on to the real issues," former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney said.)

It was a spirited opening to a debate that capped one of the most politically tumultuous days of the 2012 cycle.

Again you Gaseous Old Pharts are missing the point! Yes Clinton, Edwards and Jesse Jackson cheaters all of them. But which one of them persecuted someone else for cheating while they were cheating?

Michael: How about one of the lead members (prosecutors) during President Clinton's Impeachment hearings, Republican Congressman William Asa Hutchinson, of Arkansas! Hutchinson was having an affair when he, as a House Prosecutor, was bringing charges against the President. Hutchinson's outrageous, adultrous behavior so outraged Democrats and Republicans in Arkansas that, I understand, he has become an unknown figure in Arkansas politics!

@Melanie flax 1.14 - But, once it becomes public knowledge than its no longer private, now is it? There are no human miracles, it will take a concerted effort on the part of the president and those in Congress to try and turn this economy around. We did not get into this mess overnight and we will certainly not extricate ourselves from it overnight either. It will require a 'let's roll up our sleeves; put the kettle on, and prepare to stay here until we can come to a solid agreement on how America will get back on it's feet.' Nothing more, nothing less.

Hey Newt, it's a little different when the shoe is on the other foot, eh? You made such a fool of yourself trying get Clinton impeached and at the same time you were doinking wife #3 Callista. While you were doinking wife #2 your first wife lay dying in her bed and that is where you served her divorce papers. So you have no reason to be appalled that a question about your adulterous life was asked last night. You opened the door when you were trying to bury Clinton who by the way had the nation in good fiscal balance then came the alcoholic, cocaine addict, college failing(political science failed and finally passed third try with a C-) George Bush and the idiot who ordered the men in helicopters to their death in Mogadishu. Of the four remaining Republican candidates there is not one who can fit into the office of President. Three of them will only make millions of dollars off huge corporations andmake money for them and their rich cronie friends. We all know it is big business that runs this country not the poilticians. Big business says do this and the Republicans and some Democrats scramble to make it work for their benefit. So again Gingrich if you do not like being asked questions about your numerous affairs because I'm sure that there has been more than the ones the public knows about just drop out of the race and help find someone that will stand up to the rich and big business. Oh and by the way George and Dick made millions of dollars off Iraq alone, how much did you make?

How dare they make an issue of a man's commitment to his wife! Oh, wait, that's just what Gingrich required of Clinton when seeking impeachment, wasn't it?

Methinks the gentleman attempted to thwart answering truthfully be being brazenly offended. He does not deserve the office he is seeking -- now or in the future.

How dare the moderator ask Porky Pig if he wanted to respond to the day's headlines.

Ol' Newt the ethically challenged serial cheater, liar and all around jackass can't take the heat.

Remember it was his "love of country" that drove him to screw around.

If elected he will do to us exactly what he did to all of his wives.

I can see it now: Introducing President Newt, the serial philanderer, with his wife, the First Aldultress.

The Christian Taliban will swallow their "ethics" and "values" and vote for Porky Pig if nominated. South Carolina C. T.'s will certainly do so.

The Christian Taliban is not ethical, honest and does possess "Fanny Values".

The Christian Taliban (they call themselves Evangelicals) know no shame.

Newt is just a plain old pig who has no moral values. He is a hypocrite who made a total ass of himself when he was trying to get Clinton impeached. While trying to bury Clinton he was doinking another woman besides his wife. He served wife # 1 divorce papers in her death bed while doinking wife#2, and then when he got tired of her (she wanted nothing to do with an"open marriage") he was doinking a congressional aide who turns out to be wife#3. So just imagine that a cheating fat slob as president and his slutty wife as first lady. Hey, with an open marriage he can have Sarah Palin in for a three way in the Lincoln bedroom.

Yes they are sluts as he was cheating more than once and wife #2 and Wife #3 were sleeping with a married man so their scruple levels have to be pretty low. The only innocent one was wife #1. He is probably not cheating right now because he is in the spotlight but I'm sure he will return to his cheating ways.

It's all about content of character folks - if you add the ethics violations while speaker of the house (Speaker Of The House! and wasn't he impeached?) to his filandering, what you get is a character that's dirty - not the kind of person I want to represent me or my country to the rest of the planet and certainly not the kind of person worthy of my precious vote.

The Republicans are the ones who made it their business to talk about family values, gay marriage, infidelity, etc. Why is it now that Newt should get a pass on these issues? Personally, I don't care what he does in his personal life, but I hardly think he has moral justification to cast shame on the media for questioning his adherence to the standards of his own party.

If you were dying and needed heart surgery and the best hear surgeon in the world wanted to do you surgery, but 17 years ago he had an affair, would you say "Oh no you can't save me!"? Of course not. Newt has the ideas and plans to fix the economy. A real plan unlike the ones that Obama keeps claiming he has but never tells anyone the details.

Newt is the best candidate to change the way things are in DC and fix the economy, just as he did in the 90s!
