NBC poll: Newt Gingrich gains ground on Mitt Romney in South Carolina

In the final days leading up to the South Carolina primary, Newt Gingrich attacked Mitt Romney's tax rate revelation. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

With two days until South Carolina’s Republican presidential primary, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney holds a 10-point lead over former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, according to a new NBC News/Marist poll of the GOP contest in that state.

But a day after Monday night’s Republican debate – where Gingrich’s performance was considered strong and Romney’s uneven – the poll also shows the former speaker gaining considerable ground on the GOP frontrunner.

Overall in the two-day survey – conducted Monday and Tuesday – Romney gets the support of 34 percent of likely Republican primary voters in South Carolina, including those who are undecided but leaning toward a candidate.

He’s followed by Gingrich at 24 percent, Texas Rep. Ron Paul at 16 percent, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum at 14 percent, and Texas Gov. Rick Perry at 4 percent.

Iowa Republicans to call caucus result split decision

Yet the numbers are strikingly different before and after the debate on Monday, when Romney stumbled over whether he would release his tax records (he later said he would do so in April). Also in that outing, Gingrich drew cheers – and even a standing ovation from some – in response to a question about whether his rhetoric about food stamps and janitorial work for poor children was racially insensitive.

“The fact is that more people have been put on food stamps by Barack Obama than any president in American history,” Gingrich answered. “I know among the politically correct, you're not supposed to use facts that are uncomfortable.”

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney visits Hudson's Smokehouse in Lexington, S.C., on Wednesday.

He later added, “I believe every American of every background has been endowed by their creator with the right to pursue happiness. And if that makes liberals unhappy, I'm going to continue to find ways to help poor people learn how to get a job, learn how to get a better job and learn some day to own the job.”

Another GOP debate takes place on Thursday evening.

What a difference one debate makes
On Monday before the debate, Romney led Gingrich in the poll by 15 points, 37 percent to 22 percent. But on Tuesday, that advantage narrowed to just five points, 31 percent to 26 percent.

“The numbers on Tuesday were very different than the numbers on Monday,” says Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion, which conducted the survey.

And they were especially different among the most conservative segments of the GOP electorate in South Carolina.

On Monday, Gingrich held a five-point lead over Romney among those describing themselves as “very conservative,” 32 percent to 27 percent, with Santorum getting 24 percent.

While on the trail in South Carolina, Mitt Romney said he will release further details about his taxes in April if he secures the Republican presidential nomination. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

But the next day, Gingrich’s percentage with this group jumped up to 35 percent, Santorum’s declined to 20 percent and Romney’s sunk to 19 percent.

Among Tea Party supporters on Monday, Romney edged Gingrich, 35 percent to 27 percent. But on Tuesday, the numbers flipped – with Gingrich at 34 percent and Romney at 27 percent.

And a similar change occurred among likely South Carolina primary voters who are evangelical Christians. On Monday, Romney led Gingrich here, 36 percent to 22 percent, with Santorum at 18 percent. On Tuesday, it was Gingrich at 27 percent, Romney at 22 percent, and Santorum at 19 percent.

While Gingrich gained ground on Romney the day after the GOP debate, his poll position in South Carolina has declined markedly since December, when he led the former Massachusetts governor in the NBC News/Marist poll, 42 percent to 23 percent.

The Bain dog doesn’t bite – at least for now
Romney also can take comfort with this finding from the poll: His past work at Bain Capital doesn’t seem to bother South Carolina Republicans.

Sixty-one percent of GOP primary voters – as well as 42 percent of all registered voters in the Palmetto State – agree with the statement that investment firms like Bain help the U.S. economy. And they agree that while some companies fail or are restructured, others succeed and that’s how the free market works.

By comparison, just a quarter of likely GOP primary voters – plus a third of all registered voters – agree with the statement that investment firms like Bain hurt the U.S. economy when they take over a company; when they lay off workers and reduce their pay; and when they make money for the firm whether or not the company succeeds.

What’s more, 48 percent of likely Republican primary voters believe the recent political attacks on Romney’s past experience at Bain are unfair, while just 22 percent think they’re fair.

And a plurality of likely GOP primary voters – 23 percent – find Romney to be the Republican presidential candidate who best understands their problems. That’s compared with 22 percent for Gingrich, 18 percent for Paul and 16 percent for Santorum.

Other notable numbers in the poll:

•       39 percent of likely Republican voters in the state believe that the ability to beat President Barack Obama in November is the most important candidate quality, and that’s nearly double the percentage who said that in December’s NBC News/Marist poll of South Carolina;

•       a majority (56 percent) think Romney has the best chance of beating Obama;

•       a plurality (30 percent) say that Romney has been the candidate who has spent the most time talking about the issues, while another plurality (41 percent) say Gingrich has been the one who has spent the most time attacking his opponents;

•       another plurality (36 percent) say they like Paul the least;

•       and Obama’s job-approval rating in South Carolina – among registered voters – is 44 percent.

The NBC News/Marist poll was conducted from Jan. 16-17 among 684 likely GOP primary voters (with a margin of error of plus-minus 3.8 percentage points). The pre-debate sample surveyed 349 likely voters (+/- 5.5), and the post-debate sample had 335 (+/- 5.5.).

Among the 2,146 registered voters, the margin of error is plus-minus 2.1 percentage points.

Anyone who votes for a sociopathic nutjob like Newt Gingrich has failed the IQ test of life. Simple as that.

So you'd prefer a sociopath like Mutt Romney who ties his dog to the roof of his car and drives 12 hours to Canada in the middle of winter?

Romney makes Newt look damn near human

It’s obvious that many people haven’t made up their minds yet so the pendulum will move back and forth for a while. A week is a long time in politics and anything can happen.

As for Newt Gingrich, there is no doubt that the stint in the Speaker’s chair helped him debate the “sensitive” issues more vigorously and with more authority.

And Santorum won in Iowa, which will make Romney eat crow. Arrogant people...All of them. I sincerely hope that Santorum and Perry get out of the race. And when they get finally the "" Nominee"" , he get kicked out by Obama. They talk about how many blacks are on welfare, despite the fact that it is the FAULT of the Republicans that the blacks in the South live in dismal conditions.

Gingrich is saying that "" liberals"" are trapping blacks in bad schools, low employment, etc. Most of the Governonrs have been REPUBLICANS. They keep the State in the toilet. I am not sure how President Obama is the "" food Stamp"" President. The Republicans, such as Mint De Mintt and Senator Lindsey Graham contonually cut back on jobs and education. They give vouchers to white, rich people to send their kids to the best public schools.

The GOP are criminals in South Carolina, starting with the arrogant Governnor Nikki Haley

In the debate, he speaks to the American people, and seems to know, how Americans are suffering, and what they need. In other words, he is in touch with America! Go Newt, beat Obama in 2012! They're all sociopaths except Ron Paul...but you're absolutely right. Anyone who votes for Newt "I want to be a dictator" Gingrich is a not-so-smart individual.

That being said...voting in general to pick who runs a society is dumb. It'a argumentum ad populum (appeal to the idiotic crowd who is just a fickle, violent, and stupid lynch mob), an informal logical fallacy.

Somehow it never seems to bother anyone we run our entire country via a logical fallacy! Some even romanticize "democracy" like it's wonderful! All it leads to is idiots voting for idiots they agree with, and those idiots run our education system, which produces worse results and still dumber people in a predictable downward spiral of stupidity!

Just remember democracy-fans...in school the average grade was a "C"...and half the people are dumber than that! That does not bode well for your precious fairytale utopia of democracy from get-go.

It is amazing how few times Ron Paul in mentioned in this article. He is the only one, other than Romney, on the ballot in all 50 states. He is the only non-Romney with even the slightest chance to win the nomination. The press continues to push the bottom-runners as viable alternatives in a deliberate effort to mislead. No one besides Romney and Paul have a chance.

Also, why "Evangelical Christians" would back Gingrich is beyond me. I wouldn't trust him to hold my lunch while I get a cup of coffee. As for "Not the status quo?" He is the definition of "Status quo". He is a Washington insider, who left to work for big bussiness, who now wants back in Washington.

Romney is desperate and he's showing it. He getting more animated, quicker to flip, and grasping at straws trying to make the big kill... only makes him look less presidential and more pathetic.

Oh and BTW guys, the saying is "That dog won't hunt", not that dog won't bite. C'mon you can do better than that. Sheesh.

All of MSNBC's poll qualifiers make it almost impossible to interpret the overall result. GEEEZUS folks gimme a break. "Among Republicans who consider themselves very conservative and will vote if the sky is clear and the temperatures are in the upper 50's, Gingrich comes out on top." C'mon you guys!

      What a bunch of Schlemiels.

Well, that poll is garbage now anyway since Perry is out. He'll still be on the ballot, as will Bachman and Huntsman and Cain and they'll still get some votes despite the fact they are no longer in the race. But where the majority of Perry's 4% ends up could be decisive. Time for another poll kids.

I still believe Romney will be the Nominee. It's his turn. But he is looking more and more crippled by the lack of enthusiasm for him among the members of his own party.

IT MUST SUCK TO BE MITT ROMNEY!

"Sixty-one percent of GOP primary voters – as well as 42 percent of all registered voters in the Palmetto State – agree with the statement that investment firms like Bain help the U.S. economy."

Romney needs to strongly address the Bain Capital issue, because we know Obama will interview as many people laid off by Bain as possible - despite over 5 million people being laid off under Obama.

      Here's the reality of Bain, as I see it;

They buy struggling companies that are on the verge of bankruptcy in hopes that streamlining operations and putting in good managers can turn them around. That requires making a lot of difficult decisions, including laying off some people in order to make the company more efficient and improve the chances of avoiding bankruptcy. Does it always work? No, but if you have far more successes than failures, the investment capital company will make money, but some companies will unfortunately do what they no doubt would have done anyway - go out of business.

What people need to focus on is the overall impact of the investments by the venture capital company. If Bain had to lay off 10,000 people to make companies successful, and then, because they were able to turn those companies around and make them grow and hire an additional 120,000 workers, I have a hard time saying they were 'greedy and heartless' since they still added a net of over 100,000 new jobs. That's 'Free Enterprise' at work, which is what has made America the wonderful success and shining example that it has become.

While I am not supporting Romney for President, the difference between Romney and Obama, whose policies have cost millions of workers their jobs, is stark. If Romney is elected, I would hope that he would bring his experience to bear to streamline the bloated Federal civilian government workforce that he has grown by about 130,000 jobs under Obama. Interestingly, Bush cut the Federal Executive Branch civilian workforce by an average of about 140,000 net jobs versus Clinton, but Obama has increased it right back up again.

It's interesting that Romney is getting beat up over Bain Capital because of the roughly 10,000 people that were laid off from streamlining companies in an attempt to save them from bankruptcy (even though they later ADDED about 120,000 jobs after they were turned around and became successful), but we hear no complaints about Obama cancelling/delaying the Keystone pipeline project which would added 20,000 desperately needed construction jobs where the unemployment rate is over 16%.

A job that was cancelled is no different than a job that was lost to an unemployed person.

Romney needs to strongly address the Bain Capital issue, because we know Obama will interview as many people laid off by Bain as possible - despite over 5 million people being laid off under Obama.

Big difference. With the Bain layoffs Romney was directly at fault. With the layoffs under Obama it was the policies started by Bush that lead to the layoffs.

Remember, Obama saved over a million jobs by insuring loans to GM and Chrysler and no they were not all union jobs. Just a fact that Obama haters try to hide since they took the position that those companies should have gone out of business with millions more jobs lost.

Roy, Have you ever worked with Venture Capitalists? My experience is that the first part of your statement is always true... "They buy struggling companies" but I would rephrase the rest to: "because they are in a compromised financial position." Venture Capitalists such as Bain then look at a company "every which way but Sunday" and determine one of several paths... 1) Pass (most common), 2) Purchase and resell (like flipping a house, they find they buyer before they make the purchase), 3) Purchase and sell for parts (like a car chop shop), and last but not least they purchase to improve and profit. Option 4 is the most risky, the longest time-investment of capital, and, by far, the least desirable.

But I will not criticize Romney for these ventures. It is not a crime to do what he did, and Bain did nothing unethical or immoral that I'm aware of. More power to them, I say.

But I would also not glorify Bain as the second coming to saving jobs... that just wasn't their business.

Romney used Bain to raid workers pension funds then stuck the government (US taxpayers) with the bill. But hey that alright because he was a Republican costing the taxpayers money. Heaven forbid if he were a Democrat doing the same thing.

Don't you people see the irony in this??

The more I read posts from people we have to assume can vote, the scarier the future for our country becomes. How did our electorate got so stupid all they care about is the latest hollywood, jerry springer type BS instead of where our country is headed if this election isn't successful.

GROW some brains for God's sake and care about what will keep us from totally losing our Constitutional rights and the greatest country that ever was on this earth. Obama will destroy us completely if re- elected in my opinion and it appears they are terrified of Romney so they are playing a dirty as possible. Don't be fooled.

          Hi Larry,

The EPA already signed off on the pipeline deal--it meets their standards. Mr. Obama opposes it, for now, because it helps him energize evnironmentalists. And tens of thousands of people who could be gainfully employed won't be. Brilliant.

You claim that a million jobs were saved by Mr. Obama. Quite a Herculean political tasxk, you know? So let's for the sake of argument say that Mr. Obama's policies have directly and indirectly saved or created 3 million jobs. This is MORE than Mr. Obama claims--I'm in a generous mood. Those policies have cost about $2 trillion more that we would have otherwise spent by the government had previous spending policies been in place. Now for the tricky part...simple division.

$2 trillion divided by 3 million jobs will give us 4/job, yes? Can you say $667,000 PER JOB? I'm sorry, but if you were throwing around 2/3 of a million bucks per job in any other context you would be considered an abject failure. But not you. You think Mr. Obama is amazingly capable at his job. And deserves another term as president.

We will never get back the money this president has spent to save/create jobs. The jobs created will never, not in 100 years, not in 200 years, repay to the treasury the amount invested to save/create them. The USA is far less wealthy as a result, with fewer people hired in other positions as well. All so you could be beguiled by a man flashing loads of cash not even his. Sorry, but Mr. Obama is an epic failure as president. He deserves a return to the private sector as fast as constitutionally possible.

ps--when firms go bankrupt they often (particularly with large firms) restructure. Employees remain employed. Suppliers line up with claims to be settled. A judge in the process decides which debts, if any, to discharge, which debts to restructure, and so on. Your claim a million jobs would have been lost had GM and Chrysler been allowed to fail and seek bankruptcy protections is a claim made by someone with no concept at all how bankruptcy works.

I suppose they think the American people would rather let those taken down by Bush's recession starve?

So if Obama is the "food stamp President", will their nominee be the "no food President"?

          Rich,

C'mon. All you give us are the cold, hard facts.

Obama gave us 'Hope' har dee har har, and change for the worse without leaving us enough for the toll.

Clinton 'felt our pain,' as well as a few other things.

Carter said we should turn down the heat and put on a sweater because of our Malaise.

Johnson saddled us with his 'Great Society.'

Oh for the days when a Democrat asked what we could do for our country rather then the other way around.

LMarcT "They buy struggling companies that are on the verge of bankruptcy in hopes that streamlining operations and putting in good managers can turn them around. Roy, Have you ever worked with Venture Capitalists?...............But I would also not glorify Bain as the second coming to saving jobs... that just wasn't their business."

Yes, I have negotiated with venture capitalists, and while they certainly do try to maximize their profits, they also take great risks, and both the venture capitalist and the company have the free choice to accept the deal or to walk away - nobody is holding a gun to the head of the company that is in serious financial shape.

As for the other things that you accuse venture capitalists of doing, I think maybe you've been watching too many Hollywood movies. The vast majority of venture capitalists that I have worked with have two goals - 1) - Evaluate carefully the prospects for success, and 2) - Structure the venture to maximize its potential profits and minimize the risk. Both of these are the essence of 'Free Enterprise'.

Yes, the venture capitalist's main goal is not to 'save jobs', but nobody starts a business just to 'create jobs' - Jobs are a by-product of a successful business. If Bain Capital created 10 jobs for every one that was lost, I'd say that's a very good business record and they provided a valuable economic service to the country.

Speaking of the Panama Canal, Newt "the progressive" Gingrich's favorite President was Teddy "Big Ol' Progressive Warmonger" Roosevelt.

No wonder Newt said he loved Andrew Jackson's foreign policy of "kill our enemies" (which included the genocidal Trail of Tears on Native Americans)...and the crowd in South Carolina's Debate cheered Newt on that murderous point. They cheered war crimes and boo'd Ron Paul's suggestion we use Jesus' Golden Rule of treating others as we'd want to be treated. CHEERED war crimes and BOO'D Jesus!

I love the hypocrisy of the left, criticizing Newt as a "Warmonger" and repressing individuals. Wasn't it Obama who promised to close Gitmo? Still open. Wasn't it Obama who criticized the practice of "rendition" and then endorsed it through a presidential order? Wasn't it Obama who criticized the Patriot Act and now stands firmly behind it with enhanced authority? Didn't our illustrious president order the military hit on a US citizen? I find it comical that it is OK when your guy does it.

@onefungi, Republicans made it impossible for Obama to close Gitmo. They have railed against the President anytime he wants to bring a member of Al Qaeda to supermax. Nice try, attempting to blame Obama on that one.

Rendition with oversight versus torture, I'd say Obama is closer to the mark.

You can blame Obama for continuing the Patriot Act, but it was Republicans in charge that started the whole thing.

Obama gave the order to take out a terrorist, who was far from an American citizen.

What will Romney do with these? What will Gingrich do with these? I doubt anything differently.

If anyone flubbed it, it was the Dems in the Senate.....and there was no filibuster proof majority as there were and are at least 2 Indies in the Senate who do their own thing......in 2008, we got Dem Senators who are so conservative they should be GOP, but the GOP doesn't want them because they don't consider them conservative enough. The Dems are way more tolerant of members breaking ranks than the GOP. They'd need about 70 seats to be filibuster proof. It can be a pain sometimes, but people should be allowed to vote as they see fit, not hammered into compliance. I don't like the GOP way of doing business. Of course, Boehner does have his hands full in the House.......

I'm beginning to think that many of the posters who decry President Obama are suffering with Altheizers, no short term memory. They are living in the past, but can't remember how they got to the present. I took eight years for Roosevelt to clean up the mess of Hoover and his Presidency, and he had a Democratic Congress behind him. What makes anyone think Obama can do it in three years with a devisive Republican Congress putting up barricades at every direction he turns. Joe Louis, nor Ali could have become a champ fighting with one hand tied behind his back. You sound like the Generals who said no black pilot could ever aspire to be a top pilot. Later they said they only shot down 78 German planes. Withholding the fact that they never lost a bomber to German fighters after hundreds of missions. Benjamin Davis, their leader, told them your mission is to protect the bombers and their crews, not to find glory. There are still those who believe they were not top flight pilots, Don't bother to ask the thousands of bomber crews who lived to get back home about what they thought of that group of "misfits". President Obama is being portrayed in the same way, not qualified, but his mission is to preserve America, for all Americans, not become an ace.

Using the Bin Laden lie isn't going to win a Presidency. Afterall there's a book out where Seal Team Six was interviewed before a lot of them died in that helicopter crash, and they were not happy with the President. They said there was no assassination mission. They said there was no shootout to enter compound, they entered via the roof and repeled onto Bin Laden's balcony. They said there were no "helmet-cams", that was complete made-up bunch of BS. They said they were sent to capture Bin Laden, and in fact Seals don't even train for assassination missions EVER. They said Bin Laden only got shot because he resisted, and it was unfortunate since he had a lot of valuable intelligence. They also said if they simply wanted to kill Bin Laden no Seals would of been sent, as all they would of had to do was launch a drone and a missle, logically.

But the sheeple believe Obama is superman or something for giving an order...an order which wasn't even the truthful order he gave. They believe the BS story, fail to look into matter, and are propagandized into deifying a dude in a suit who couldn't kill jacksquat if he had to.

The soldiers killed Bin Laden, and it wasn't their intention. Go dance in the street and celebrate it like a Palestinian celebrates an Israeli bombing, or an Iranian celebrates us being hit...and while you're doing it remember to lie to yourself that you are better than they are.

Sheeple...bah, bah, baahhhh. Read "Seal Target Geronimo" by Chuck Pfarrer. He's a former Seal who interviewed much of Seal Team Six after the raid. Stop swallowing the government's propaganda story just because it's illegal for the Seals to come forward and say it's a lie. They aren't assassins, it's insulting to their service.

That's true -- but had the operation failed, the right wing noise machine would have blamed Obama.

When it comes to dealing drugs, who made more money from medical insurance companies, than good old Newt. Who was a chief advisor to Fannie Mae and Ginny Mae, was it Obama or Newt. Check how much you are paying for medical coverage, hospital coverage, and prescription drugs under the advice of good old Newt as compared to Clinton and then get back to a post. Newt and Romney combined are responsible for 500K unemployed and possibly several millions who have no medical coverage at all. They aren't all blacks and hispanics either. There are a lot of white "former" Republicans in the unemployment lines who are getting food stamps as well. Come November all of Newt's and Romney's and whoever is crying Republican, Republican, rhetoric, are in for a rude awakening. Joe Blow unemployed American, Republican or Democrat doesn't give a twit about family values, abortion, conservative or liberal poilicys, he wants a job. He will remember who voted against him getting one too.

Agreed. And it would of been just as logically fallacious as Obama getting credit for it when it succeeds.

Yes, just as Carter was blamed when the attempt to rescue our hostages failed. The fact of the matter is, the person ultimately in charge gets the credit or the blame (a bit like a ship's captain).

lawl at Romney struggling to defeat a guy on a glorified book tour. It has become apparent that Newt never seriously was running for President based on his numerous book signing tours in non early voting states instead of campaigning. There have been stories of mass disorganization among the Gingrich campaign. (Which either indicates lack of leadership and organization skills or a lack of concern over the primary contest.) If Romney is struggling against Newt, how does he have any hope of defeating Obama?

It's not just "anyone but Romney" and "anyone but Obama"...it's clearly also "anyone but Ron Paul". The Republican Party has a hypocrite streak they are having trouble breaking. They act like Newt is a conservative...lol. He's a progressive, has admitted as much, and Romney is also a moderate. The only real conservative running in terms of small limited government, fiscal issues, and voting record is someone they shun. They want a liberal/moderate/progressive (aka neoconservative) Republican nominee but whine when they get one. Neocons in both Parties are going to be the choice in 2012 if they keep this up...and that means a lose-lose situation for the American people.

They say he's spoken out on the issues more than anyone else?? Then they must not like Ron Paul here because Paul's the one who speaks out on the issues head on. The Republican "Party" is still trying to disinfranchise Paul; amazing. Paul makes absolute sense but the Repubs don't want truth or wisdom. And they think they have an ice cube's chance in he double hockey sticks to win in 2012? Not a chance. It almost looks like they want to lose on purpose.

Early on, there was talk about a group of people getting together, putting on KKK garb, and going to one of Ron Paul's conferences to try and scare him or, mess his campaign up. I though South Carolina had come farther than this but nope. Maybe another 100 years.

Cracker is the historical term used by cattlemen(landowners) in Georgia, but native Floridians use that term for themselves, too.

All of these things mentioned, are going to be cut or eliminated anyway. It is not a republican or democrat issue. American business and the American have decided that the low taxes they enjoy, are more important then these programs. Without additional revenue, the federal government just can no longer afford to fund these programs. Their only option is to cut.

Social Security isn't an entitlement. Last I checked, I am paying into it every month when I get my pay stub.

I hate when the GOP uses Orwell Newspeak and redefines truth by calling obligations "entitlements". There is non-discretionary spending, and discretionary spending, and the ENTIRE military budget is discretionary spending....that is....its optional spending done by choice.

We blow 50% of our tax receipts on the military, thats just insane. Only North Korea blows more of their cash on their soldiers and even they force their military to plow fields when not on duty.

Rick, North Korea blows more of it's handouts from other countries on their army; their own funds are used to support their current Enlightened Leader just as in the past.

You know, you really have to think hard about what is in the Psychological Profile of a Premier who needs a One Million Plus Army in addition to ALL the people of his nation to protect him from harm. SHEESH ! You talk about poly-traumatic reactions.

Odumbo pretty much just killed any chance ( it was very small to begin with ) for re-election when he killed the pipeline and showed he will continue his marxists ways no matter the cost to the average American.

True, this what part of the "BIG" plan thats in place, gas is already up to 3.50 a gallon and they plan on jackin it to 5 bucks plus this summer and thus cause major layoffs and temporially bring down the economy just before election time knowing they can now blame it all on Obama for not oking the pipeline. Thus we take a super majority in the senate, add more seats in the house and take over many more state and local governments and have our man in the white house with a huge mandate in his white hands guaranteeing we can finally eliminate all unions and all entitlements of the last 75 years since fdr!! Make it happen vote tea party were takin america back!!

Newt won't get the nomination due to the fact that he married a promiscuous whore and nobody including the evangelicals would want her as first lady.

Limbaugher- its attitudes like yours that cause half of Americans to hate their president and the other party every 4 years. You insult, spew hate, lie, mis-characterize by making grey issues and black and white. Its people like you that don't get that 98% of Americans are in the middle on every issue. Its the extremists on each end like yourself that are dividing this country.

While moderates in either party may be pure scum to you, moderates are always the majority.

None of them has the best interests of our country and all its citizens at heart. One is just as bad as the other. They all have backgrounds in furthering the cause of big business.

                                                      #17.5 - Thu Jan 19, 2012 9:20 AM EST

After reading the 4 pages of comments I had to join this thread. If everybody would quit fighting back and forth and realize that Obama has trampled the Constitution and trampled on every value that our forefathers fought and died for. We were a "God Fearing Nation". What happened? I'll tell you - Obama has created class warfare. He is the President. He promised "change and hope". Remember? Well the only change I have is the few cents left in my pocket after all of the policies he and his Dem congress put into place. Now with the pipeline nixed, we can thank him for us paying $5/gal of gas! And the only "hope" I have left is that SOMEBODY...ANYBODY beats him and gets us righted back to the God Fearing Nation we once were. I don't care about color, ethnicity or any of the mumbo jumbo the haters out there what to spew. Everybody has the right to believe in whatever religion they want. But the President of this United States is supposed to believe in "ONE NATION, UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL". What is important is that we USED TO BE the country everybody looked up to. We have been degraded thanks to his socialist beliefs. If I wanted to live in a socialist country I would move to Greece. Yep - that looks like a great government to live under don't you think? If he gets re-elected I expect to see a war in the United States between the rich and the poor and I hate to tell you but the poor (like me) will win. I cling to my Bible and believe me, I cling to my guns...I'm tired of this government telling me what I can do. I work my butt off to survive and I help people when I can. It's not up to the government to take my money and give it to a stranger. Lastly...why people don't like Newt...because he tells it like it is. We've been fed more crap by the "politically correct thing to say" and now that the facts have to be told everybody says Newt is angry. Well good...he should be angry and so should anybody who believes that they have a right to work and build up a retirement and enjoy their life just to see that our wonderful President wants to take what I have worked for since I was 12 years old and give it to somebody who is too lazy to work. As for Newt's infidelities while I don't particularly care for how he handled his private life -- look at Clinton...did he handle his personal life right? No...but I can tell you that there were plenty of jobs and people could enjoy the economy under Clinton (and yes, he is a Democrat so don't just think I am all about Republicans only...I voted for Clinton both times)...at least Newt stood up and said he was wrong. He asked forgiveness. He knows he has made mistakes. If you are a true Christian the Bible says to forgive. You don't throw stones. So, Democrats, Republicans, Independents, Tea Partiers, all of us have one job to do. Let's get this country back into the hands of a person who truly wants to see us all succeed on our own and not wait for a check. And don't get me wrong...there are plenty who need those checks to survive for medical reasons (except drug abuse), for physical reasons. I believe that the system has gotten so liberal that I can actually make more money by pretending to be crazy and draw an SSI check and sit at home, watch TV, get government handouts and have more money in my pocket. But my conscience tells me it is wrong. Wake up everybody...no matter who the next president is we have a rocky road ahead and it is time that we band together and believe that we DO live in the greatest country in the world. Newt is not going to be a pushover and just tell you what you "want" to hear. He is going to tell it like it is. Compare him with Chris Christie - why does everybody like him??? Because he doesn't care who he offends...he tells it like it is.

Why do people don't like Newt Gingrich?? He is a lying SOB!!! The idiot claims that he has family values he is now on the 3rd wife that he cheated with on the 2nd wife, which he cheated on the 1st wife with!!! This man is only concerned as to what is in it for him. He doesn't give a damn about the middle class, all he cares about is the money he receives from corporations and the 1% to make sure things go in their favor. He now talks about how he wants to give Alaska's Number One Village Idiot a high place in the administration if he wins. OMG if that happens then you might as well kiss this country goodbye. Both of them would be glad to sell every single one of us out if it meant money in their pocket. if you think Newt is going to bring us back to being a God Fearing Nation you are sadly mistaken he will only end up bankrupting this country for his gain. Yes Obama needs a good kick in his rear but I would pick him over any republican candidate out there.

If you elect a republican the middle class will shrink to lower class while the rich get richer. All the republicans have is I want to make Obama a one term president -but they don't know how I am going to fix anything but cut the programs in the social area, social security, medicare, and while sending the problem to the broke states and of course cutting taxes for the rich while increasing taxes on the middle class and lower class as we restructure the tax code. When the quitter from Alaska and now a estate owner in Arizona says elect Newt to keeo the race going but doesn't endorse Newt - You just know Mitt Romney is the correct person to vote for.

Iranian folks are one of the most kindest culture's. seen it 1979-1986

It makes me so disappointed to hear Rick Santorum, Newt and Mitt so hell bent on bombing a country with millions of people that are and HAVE been kind people for ages.

Just because their Gov Sucks we should bomb them? Thats it? the people are beautiful! Do you really think Iran would start a war with the U.S. and risk a massive retaliation that would kill millions of their own? NOT Hardly! Does our Congress really think that we are that stupid to believe Iran would?

...Just look at our pathetic Government!

Barrows money, to so called Nation build, to raid territory , to start wars with the weapons that the company lockheed makes, whom all of our congress has millions of personal dollars of their own money in the company's stock, and our kids are sent off to die! FOR WHAT? FREEDOM B.S. try Greed! If it was about freedom would we have censorship on our media? or the internet?

(Hilliary Clinton $35million) (John Kerry $30 million) (Newt Gringrich $6million)(B. Obama $12 million) (Mitt Romney $4.7million) (Nancy Pelosi $65million) (Rick Santourm $4 million) and the list goes on and on just from 2002 - 2010!

So, what do you think others human being's on the planet think of our Government? To make matters worse our Gov is owned by the corporations (Bain, Goldmen Sacks, Boeing, Monsanto, Lockheed, Boeing) to buy the media off to paint a picture of our congress as humanitarian's! What a joke! but Oh so TRUE!

One guy People , ONE So called Stupid old Man by the media, will put an end to the vial hostile behavior of this nasty devious congress and he is running for president of the USA at the age of 76!

He left in THE MIDDLE OF A PRESIDENTIAL RACE To Vote Against adding ANOTHER 1.4 Trillion to the US debt! While the other Wh@res are conning you for your votes!

One Man was not here courting you, he was in D.C. fighting for us.

ryan... yeah, all 75 million Iranians are pure evil and want to destroy the US...

so lets kill every man woman and child in the country right????

Iran should have no right to defend its self from its neighbors who do have nuclear weapons. If they do try to make one they are evil. (just ignore the fact that we have thousands and could destroy the world several times over and we have actually used them)

ryan...Go back to high school, finish your GED, learn to think for your self instead of just re-quoting Rush. Maybe even visit another country outside of the US and you will see the world for your self, Trust me its not the scary place Palin, Limbaugh and Newt want you to think it is.

Newt or Romney will totally F the middle to lower classes. It's clearly obvious in their platforms and history of politics. Obama's just going to continue to give in to the federal agenda, keep and gain as much control while the ship continues to sink, effectively fattening the pockets of big business to avoid being assassina......err "removed" from office. The only dog in the fight that seems to have any balls to shake things up is Paul, but he too is a politician and should not ever be trusted.
