Sarah Palin on Tuesday urged South Carolina voters to support Newt Gingrich in their GOP presidential primary, offering the closest thing to an endorsement the former Alaska governor may come before this weekend's contest.
“If I had to vote in South Carolina, in order to keep this thing going, I’d vote for Newt and I would want this to continue,” Palin said during a FOX News interview Tuesday night.
Her support for the former House speaker, however, was somewhat qualified. Palin said she believed it would be best for the primary campaign to continue, so as to continue to add scrutiny to candidates and forge their strength as an eventual nominee against President Obama.
“More debates, more vetting of candidates because we know the mistake made in our country four years ago was having a candidate that was not vetted, to the degree that he should have been,” Palin explained. “I want to see that taking place this time because America is on this precipice — it’s that important. We need this process to continue."
“We think its a pretty darn clear call to arms,” Gingrich campaign spokesman R.C. Hammond told NBC News shortly after Palin made these comments this evening.
The conservative vote in South Carolina remains split between Gingrich, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and Texas Gov. Rick Perry going into the closing days before the Jan. 21 primary in the state.
Each has been rallying voters behind their candidacy as the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who would see as the heavy favorite to win the nomination if he were to score a victory in South Carolina.
“If you consolidate the three conservative candidates, we clearly would have a huge margin over Romney, and the challenge for me is to convince conservatives to come home and have a single candidate on Saturday,” Gingrich told a crowd in Florence, S.C. today.
Palin offered words of flattery for Gingrich beyond her support this weekend, crowning him the winner of a Monday night debate. Her husband, Todd Palin, has formally endorsed Gingrich for president.
"Newt Gingrich is a true leader, which he has proven not only since the beginning of his campaign, but throughout his career,” Todd Palin said in a written statement sent out by the Gingrich campaign on Jan. 9.
It is still unknown if either Palin will actually campaign for Speaker Gingrich on the trail.

We need someone as president that is more to the center. We as a nation need to heal after years of Bush to far right and now years of Obama to far left. Romney with help from above will be the one who balances our country again. I'm a blue dog Democrat and I will be voting for Romney.

I don't think Democratic dogs of any color are allowed to vote in Republican primaries. If you meant you'll be voting for Romney in the general election, you might be getting ahead of yourself a bit, since the GOP hasn't settled on a candidate yet.

Mitt Romney is going to be the candidate, everyone already knows this but the media likes to try and place this out and the losing candidates are hoping for some miracle that has never happened and won't happen this time either. Mitt Romney has actually improved in SC and has a good lead in Florida, this is a last ditch effort by some poor losers.
I, like excaliburgc, wasn't a big fan of Bush and haven't been happy with Obama either. I'm a registered Independent who tends to be conservative but I have hated the cast of characters the Republicans have had to choose from. I would / will vote for Romney if he is the nominee because he is the most centered candidate option the country has had since Clinton was running.
Isn't it terrific that Romney proves that Americans can prosper in America, NOT on taxpayer money and lobbyists?! Great that he didn't end up being an OWS thug or on Food Stamps but invested in America and created business jobs and business experience for Americans!!!

In the last three years Obama's failed policies have weakened the economy. The failure of Obama in the last three years can't be pinned on Bush in putting more Americans on food stamps than any other previous president.

It is truly amazing how the right seems to not even acknowledge that essentially every major problem in America right now, is due to their big experimental failure from 2000 to 2008. Palin would vote for Gingrich? That's a good enough reason alone not to vote for him, but that is just the latest on the long list of reasons.

face it thanks to Newt we now see Romney as a strong canidate that will crush those over paid union workers, with their out rageous pensions and medical benefits and vacations. Make them give them up and take a pay cut or close them down and ship their jobs over seas. What this nation needs right now so we can bring all those jobs back from chins and keep what jobs we have here. romney is a true hero and Newt is a slimy lizard who doesnt even like capitalism obviously. Its a good thing to take money from a bunch of lazy dem workers and give it to the good gop hard working stock holders. NOW There is a recommendation worthy of ignoring. What has Palin got against the Newt? Granted she still holds a modicum of sway with the Tee-Party but the Tea Party itself appears to be divided in their choice of Candidates.
Given the current offerings of the GOP as a choice for President; It looks like Obama will be running alone, not only in the primary but in the general election as well. The GOP is beginning to look like the captain of a Luxury Liner who is waving to his crew from shore while the ship is sinking.
Someone is asleep at the wheel and the 11% vote of approval that the Congress has is not helping matters.
