White House calls Gingrich's food stamp rhetoric 'crazy'

The White House on Tuesday responded to criticism of its welfare policies, denouncing as "crazy" a suggestion by Newt Gingrich that President Obama has increased the number of people on food stamps.

Press secretary Jay Carney dismissed of a question about a claim made by the former House speaker during Monday evening's presidential debate about Obama's record on food stamps.

"More people have been put on food stamps by Barack Obama than by any president in American history," Gingrich said at the South Carolina forum, using a line of rhetoric that's become a staple of his stump speech.

But the White House wouldn't let the claim go unanswered Tuesday. Carney explained that, due to the recession the country had been suffering when the president took office, there was an increase in “the number of people who…needed assistance.”

Carney went on to say: “I would simply say that those are the facts, and the economic policies that helped create that situation are ones that, in the case of the candidate you just mentioned, he supported. And they're the kinds of policies that he advocates to this day. This president takes a different approach.”

When pushed on the policies Gingrich advocated which contributed to the recession, Carney responded that the economic policies that lead to the economic crisis in 2008 were supported by almost all of the leading Republican candidates for president.

It wasn’t the only political moment of today’s White House briefing, either.

Carney also took aim at Mitt Romney’s reluctance to release his tax returns, pointing to a precedent started by the former Massachusetts governor's own father when it came to financial disclosure.

“President George W. Bush, President Clinton, nominees for each party for years and years and years. I think going back to 1976, this has been a very standard tradition…I think it was a tradition that was initiated by then-presidential candidate George Romney back in 1968, who released 12 years of tax records in '68, as I understand it.”

The press secretary demurred on calling on Romney directly to release his tax records.

Carney's hint of a smile upon finishing his answer may have prompted CBS’s Mark Knoller to respond, “You just happened to know that.”

I actually was a little astounded that Grinch threw his hat into the 2012 ring way way back ... what does it say that the lunatic fringe base wants to be appeased by a repugnant cantankerous 'ol fool ?

So c'mon South Carolinas' right-wing wacknut base ... we have plenty more caucuses for Noot to shmooze-up the wacko-base for book-signing dollars ... so where's the love for a senile 'ol grandpa who wakes-up to belch, fart, hack, srcatch his butt & groin and spout off in vile hate in front of everybody then snortles & chortles at you before going back to bed ...

... yes Grinch sounds like your kind of cretin ...

LOL.

Newt's got the nerve....he wants to put more people on food stamps by firing janitors in New York. More people are on food stampts due to Bush's policies....and they live in red states...Newt needs to shut up.

I wish, I could get food stamps... I'd have more cash.

It is difficult for the White House to take credit for wondrous accomplishments. I can easily imagine the modest Mr. Obama not wishing to be thought of, justifiably, as the Food Stamp Emperor.

Newt was giving that crowd their diet of "red meat" The fact is that 57% of food stamps are used by white people...something he forgot to mention and given that crowd, wouldn't have mattered anyway. Frankly, I don't give a damn who is getting food stamps. If people need them to feed themselves and their family, it's a good thing this is available. More people are using food stamps for the simple reason that there are 140 million people without jobs. Jobs that were lost BEFORE Obama even came into office. If those people don't have food stamps, how the hell are they suppose to eat? Newt and Willard would probably tell them to eat cake! If they want to call him a "food stamp President" fine. At least people are able to eat!

Brian, you do know that even people working needed food stamps? Those are called the working poor. People who get up every day and go to jobs...jobs that don't pay enough for them to live on. Karma is a bitch and because I get really pissed reading crap like yours, hopefully one day you'll experience exactly what they are going through.

            Yes indeedy.

The characterization of Mr. Obama as "The Food Stamp President" is indeed a racist characterization.

Let all be reminded that the economic disaster we are now languishing in was caused by the policies of the last administration, and not this one. If anything, our current President has saved millions of jobs that, under a particular republican president, would have been lost as the bobble-head left it all up to "the free market".

I would also remind you that this has happened once before. We called it the Great Depression, and its severity was largely due to a President by the name of Hoover, who @!$%#ed his own country so badly that it took a world war to turn things around.

            Sounds familiar, doesn't it.

But its OK, let Newt spout his racist filth. He's not going to be POTUS, not a snowball's chance in Hell, and we of course must in fact thank him for revealing what Mitt Romney really is, a corporate raider with eyes aglitter with avarice beyond his wildest dreams at the prospect of winning the Presidency and ripping our country apart for cash.

That's real nice Rick, and pretty typical too, resorting to personal insults when you have no valid argument.

Let's see now, the previous democratic president...Oh yeah, you mean the guy who grew our economy by 23 million jobs under his watch, the guy who left a budget surplus to his successor, a successor who then proceeded to waste that carefully built surplus on a war that cost 4,500 american lives, left another nation with a quarter million casualties and a ruined economy, and enriched his buddies and cronies at the expense of his own nation.

To the tune of what, a trillion bucks? That's the estimate of how much it cost us. Look it up, Rick.

The same guy who let thousands of people stay stranded in a flooded city, and told us all that he couldn't do anything about it because he couldn't, and I quote, "break the chain of command".

The guy who told us that the free market would solve the problem in the Gulf Coast, after hurricane Katrina had anihalated it.

The same guy who appointed a horse-show organizer to be the head of FEMA.

The idiot who isolated us politically from the rest of the planet, and danced like a buffoon on the steps of The Whitehouse.

But, let's not stop there, Rick. Let's compare, shall we?

The budget surplus in 2000 was $230 billion. This represents the largest federal budget surplus, and the largest debt reduction, in United States history.

When Bush let office in 2008, that surplus had become a deficit of $11 TRILLION.

The time period is the same, 8 years.

Jobs created under Bill Clinton: 23 million.

Jobs created under George Bush: 3 million.

That period of time, by the way, is the same.

This 'previous Democratic President' presided over the lowest inflation rate in our country's history, the largest number of privately-owned single family homes ever, the lowest unemployment rate in modern times, significant drops in crime rates, and significantly reduced welfare expenditure, not to mention actual welfare reform.

Oh yeah, and revenues went way, WAY up, under his watch, as well.

              So did private business ownership.

So did higher education student graduation.

So did exports to foreign countries.

Good luck with proving Mr. Clinton trashed our economy, Rick. People who think, and people who do their research, know better than to believe such nonsense.

But that's OK, Rick, you go ahead and call me a lying S.O.B.

You need SOMETHING to feel good about.

              Don't you.

This is great. I have been wondering about why Whites are racists, and no other race is.....

                Michael Richards makes his point.............
Michael Richards better known as Kramer from TVs Seinfeld does make a good point.

This was his defense speech in court after making racial comments in his comedy act. He makes some very interesting points...

Someone finally said it.. How many are actually paying attention to this? There are African Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian Americans, Arab Americans, etc..

And then there are just Americans. You pass me on the street and sneer in my direction. You call me 'White boy,' 'Cracker,' 'Honkey,' 'Whitey,' 'Caveman'... and that's OK.

But when I call you, @!$%#, Kike, Towel head, Sand-@!$%#, Camel Jockey, Beaner, Gook, or Chink .. You call me a racist.

You say that whites commit a lot of violence against you... so why are the ghettos the most dangerous places to live?

You have the United Negro College Fund. You have Martin Luther King Day.

You have Black History Month. You have Cesar Chavez Day.

You have Yom Hashoah. You have Ma'uled Al-Nabi.

You have the NAACP. You have BET.. If we had WET (White Entertainment Television), we'd be racists. If we had a White Pride Day, you would call us racists.

If we had White History Month, we'd be racists.

If we had any organization for only whites to 'advance' OUR lives, we'd be racists.

We have a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, a Black Chamber of Commerce, and then we just have the plain Chamber of Commerce. Wonder who pays for that??

A white woman could not be in the Miss Black American pageant, but any color can be in the Miss America pageant.

If we had a college fund that only gave white students scholarships... You know we'd be racists.

There are over 60 openly proclaimed Black Colleges in the US Yet if there were 'White colleges', that would be a racist college.

In the Million Man March, you believed that you were marching for your race and rights... If we marched for our race and rights, you would call us racists.

You are proud to be black, brown, yellow and orange, and you're not afraid to announce it. But when we announce our white pride, you call us racists..

You rob us, carjack us, and shoot at us. But, when a white police officer shoots a black gang member or beats up a black drug dealer running from the law and posing a threat to society, you call him a racist.

I am proud... But you call me a racist.

Why is it that only whites can be racists??

Bobo--Yes, people of color can be just as racist as whites, but whites have had all the power in this country and have really honed their racism. You mentioned African-Americans, Mexican-Americans, etc. Those who know their history are well aware that at the turn of the twentieth century there were Irish-Americans, Italian-Americans, German-Americans, etc. Only when those folks melded into the mainstream did they drop the hyphen. As for epithets, I've been suspended from this board for using the term synonymous with saltines, so that goes both ways. Basically, read any history survey text and you will find that this has, by and large, been a country run by white males. When we become something else, then, and only then, will racism (and sexism) die.

I have no problem with people being proud of their heritage..none at all. It does bother me when I some people believe they are "better", have a stronger work ethic, more law abiding citizens, etc. and that's something some people adhere to in this country and around the world ...that somehow because a Caucasian male screwed a Caucasian female their offspring pops out inherently superior to other races. That they have these traits that others lack because they aren't white.

Heyseed's post is factually correct, and you cannot refute any of it, hence your typical response.

That "mental disorder" created social security, medicare and medicaid. Increased private ownership, until republican vulture capitalists realized they could get rich at middle-class expense by lying, cheating and stealing.

                      I see.

So the Clinton Administration had nothing to do with 23 million new jobs in 8 years.

I wanted to comment on the Mosque issue . . . Neither the Nazis building anything near the Holocaust Museum not the Japanese building a memorial of any kind near Pearl Harbor even remotely have anythign to do with the Mosque be built NEAR ground zero. Someone made the comment that other countries would not let us build a church in their country. I think some are forgetting this is a right that we have in this country that others do not have. That is the freedom of religion. I don't see anyone protesting christian churches NEAR abortion clinics that have been bombed by christian fanatics that are pro-life. And get this, they are willing to kill people because they are pro-LIFE! Does that make sense? 'I don't think you should have an abortion because I believe that is murder, so the answer I come up with is I am going to murder you' This is the same circular reasoning that people use to justify religious beliefs. Many people want to go back to what our fore-fathers stood for but forget the fact that freedom of religion was one of those rights. They came to this country to get away from the tyranny of religion. Religion is responsible for most of the bloodshed of all of the world's history, including America's. They rest is due to the lack of toleration for people that are/were different than those doing the persecution. The fact of the matter on welfare . . . is that everyone is on it! The poor get food stamps, unemployment . . and the rich get subsidized, EVERYONE benefits but both sides want to fight about who should get it.

There is one thing I buy into that is coming from the right and that is a flat tax. However, the flat tax should be on all income. Even capital gains. . .I do not understand what makes this income so special, it's income. Some would say the reward should come with the risk, but the reward is there, even if it is taxed. If I make a $30,000 dollars for the year, and the tax rate is 10% I pay $3000. . .if you make a million(revenue, income, investments, etc.) you pay $100,000 . . .in this scenario, you just made $873,000 more than I did, your hard work and your smart investment sense made you an outstanding profit. If you even want to go as far to add an incentive for creating a job (in America, given to an American citizen. . .by all means, you should get a deduction on your taxes. . .but don't cry about creating jobs and being the job creaters, and them send them overseas to save a buck. Because when you add those together and put them in your pocket, eventually it becomes the haves and have nots. In case you don't know how that ended, read your history books. Eventually you will have all the money and no one to buy your product. History has proven that all governments topple, change or die. If we keep going in this direction, one of them is bound to happen.

Listen, I do not label myself as democratic nor republican. But if politicians don't start compromising for the good of everyone, nothing will ever change. This country does not need right or left policies. It needs compromise. You will never hear me say(or see me type) advocating for one side or the other. But the biggest reason for the mess of the last three years does not fall in the lap of the Senate, the House, not the administration. It falls in all of their laps through lack of compromise. This will forever cycle in government while politicians are more concerned with being re-elected then governing. Isn't it a wonder that just about every person you hear say 'government doesn't create jobs' works in the government in some way shape or form. Even the media coverage. The political media would not be around if it were not for politics. If compromise was the norm, neither Bill O'Reilly or Lawrence O'Donnell would have a job. MSNBC would never target FOX NEWS and vice versa.

Military members and their families are using more food stamps than in previous years

                                by Bob Hanafin, Staff Writer

Bryan Mitchell writes in an article that appeared July 22, 2009, "Military members and their families are using more food stamps than in previous years – redeeming them last year[2008] at nearly twice the civilian rate, according to Defense Commissary Agency figures.

The agency reports that more than $31 million worth of food stamps were used at commissaries nationwide in 2008 – an increase of about $6.2 million, or more than 25 percent – from the $24.8 million redeemed in 2007. That contrasts with a 13 percent overall increase in food stamp use by Americans for the same period, according to the Department of Agriculture, which administers the food stamp program…"

White people who call black people "lazy" is met with antipathy on my end because who on this green earth is lazier than white people? When the Egyptians built the pyramids in Africa, (Egypt is in Africa), they did not venture to the north to buy or take white slaves to do the labor. Egyptians, Ethiopians and and other tribes from Northern Africa provided the engineering, the architecture, the metallurgy, stone masonry, the tools, equipment made of rocks and wood, the and laborers. And while the white people crawled around on all fours in the caves of Europe; the African people built entire cities "without" the use of white slaves. Isn't that amazing? I think its amazing! White arrogance still plays a great role in your culture and in these days and times, the white folk are now paying for that arrogance at a prime rate. Barack Obama offers food and Newt offers criticism, now who would you vote for? Newt Greenslop is a fat, old, rich, white man who is so out of touch with the real that we're on the ground while he's somewhere lost in the sauce. But he plans to teach blacks how to be more enterprising. What a giant fool? Everyone in this economy has lost their main livelihood but The Big Fig Newton thinks blacks are just lazy and don't want to find work. wow

When the white folk decided to build their home in Northern America; they went to Africa to buy and steal laborers. The African in America was expected to not only provide the hardest labor but to do so without payment for services rendered; then or now! Blacks planted the white folk's fields and then harvested the crops. They were hitched to plows like mules, whipped and beaten when they could work no longer and some were even killed when their strength finally failed them. Then some blacks were moved to the north to help erect and construct the buildings and offices that some white folk work in until this very day BUT the African in America never received payment or fair wages for his contribution. Well, SHUT UP! Because you are paying now! In FOOD Stamps and gov't housing in busted down neighborhoods, with robbery and murder and rape, with the selling of drugs to your young, as their heads are filled with jungle music and cocaine snorting, with a higher drop out rate than whites could have ever imagined and by turning your daughters into money-getting whores and prostitutes. Whites don't know how to deal with these little nappy-headed grandchildren because they were never meant to be on the menu; never meant to be part of the family. If you deny these babies your children will hate your guts forever! If you parade them around in public, people will stare and point. If you try to explain, your friends will listen and then behind your back accuse YOU of not being good parents which led to this current mess and oh yeah, "what a shame?"

Tell me, how does it feel to be exploited? How does it feel to have "your America" stolen from you and the laws now in black folk's favor? As rap music assails the walls and crevices of your once beautiful homes, how does it feel, to come home and find your son wearing a doo-rag and speaking a crazy language that you've never heard? Fochizzle? How does it feel when they bring their black fianceé home to meet mom and dad? To know that some black kid somewhere has become a big time music/rap mogul who makes five times the money you make? For them to pull up beside you in traffic driving a car that cost more than your children's education? Don't you wish your parents parents had left my parents parents right where they found them? A lot more than food stamps are being taken from white society and it will take a much bigger person than Newt Gangrene to get it all back, IF THAT EVER HAPPENS! One way or another you will pay because, after you've danced to the music, you must pay to the piper! Flin-dizzle my nizzles! Out y'all!

                                  Nice one.

                                  Just one thing...

before whites went to Africa to steal millions of souls for slave labor, they systematically exterminated millions of indigenous native american people, by working them to death as slaves.

                                  Let's be honest, LOL.

When white colonizers and conquerors first set their eyes on the ruins of Great Zimbabwe, they decided quickly that this incredible city had been built by ancient greeks or other europeans.

Because africans, according to these white idiots, did not possess the skills in engineering, architecture or industry, to build a stone city.

                                  LMFAO

                                  Payback's a bitch.

                                  Isn't it.

Newt probably will do well in SC. He's playing to the base of the Republican Party down there. The problem is that he'll have to leave that land of Dixie and come up North...see how that crap plays nation-wide. Some of those people are still fighting the Civil War and will never admit that they lost then and are losing now.

Newt's arrogance and ignorant choice of words only fed the crowd. A good example of what is wrong with this country; greed, selfishness, uncaring and sometimes thoughtless! A lot of people are on food stamps because of job loss, company transfers, cheaper labor, etc. Thousands and thousands of jobs were transferred overseas. The end result several years later is high unemployment and an increase in food stamp applications.
