GEORGETOWN, SC -- As many may know, Newt Gingrich is an animal lover. But Sunday night he appeared doubtful that one of his Republican rivals enjoys the furry friends as much.
“I am a big pet lover, yes,” the former House Speaker told reporters today in the Palmetto State. “I actually think it is fun to have animals. I think it is fun to like your pet enough to actually be near them.”
These comments came after Gingrich was asked to comment on Mitt Romney’s treatment of his dog a few years back – Romney reportedly put his family dog, Seamus, in a cage affixed to the top his car while traveling with his family on a vacation.
“Well, I just would rather not have been in a kennel all the way to Canada, personally,” Gingrich said at the Land’s End Restaurant after a town-hall event.
The Speaker notably did not discuss Romney by name during either of his events today and only did so when asked by reporters.
The Gingrich campaign released a web video just last week, "For the Dogs,” that dug up this controversial topic from the last campaign cycle and included it in a montage of “moderate Mitt’s greatest hits.”
Several weeks ago, Gingrich himself even launched a website dedicated to animals: petswithnewt.com. He has also on several occasions frequented zoos throughout the country.
While some did chuckle at the question posed to the Speaker this afternoon, Gingrich agreed that Romney’s treatment of his family pet adds to the narrative about the former Massachusetts governor.
“I think there are many characteristics that come out in the course of a presidential campaign from the use of words like ‘I like firing people’ which didn’t mean he liked firing people but he said “I liked firing people’ which sounds like I liked firing people even though it wasn’t…. to putting a dog on the top of a car for 9 hours,” Gingrich said. “I mean all these different things paint a picture, all of us have pictures and the Governor has to figure out whether or not that picture is electable. I wouldn’t want to debate Barack Obama with that in my background.”
Gingrich and Romney will participate in the next GOP debate Monday night in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina – the first time they have shared the stage together since Romney’s commanding win in the New Hampshire primary last week.

I'm not a big newt fan, but I keep hearing what "terrible" things he did to his wives...he DIVORCED them...seems like he probably gave 'em the best gift he ever could! Reagan got a divorce, nobody cared...I'm sure there have been other prez's who were past their first wives...what's the big deal?

I am an animal lover. 6 dogs and 3 cats. I have to say a man of his stature putting his puppy in a crate on top of his car verses the guy who lives in an apartment close to the city. Well, you get the picture. Im sure he did it properly. I would rather what Mitt did compared to these other people letting their dogs hang out the window or get thrown all over the back of the pick up truck. -Newt- needs to get a life !!!!!

So let’s pull out the time he strapped the family pet to the top of the car and
go after his treatment of animals because it makes as much sense as going after
Romney for his Bain Capitol work. Lets face it, putting his dog in a kennel and
strapping it to the top of a car is far safer than letting it ride in the back
of a truck with no leash or even better yet pull a Clark Griswold and tie it to
the back of the cruiser and hit the freeway at 70mph. Newt needs to go away,
especially if he wants to start slinging mud at ones character, lets talk about
infidelity and how Newt is sleeping around on his wife(s) is that worse than
putting a dog out on a car in a kennel?
It is about as logical as saying the Newts involvement with Freddie Mac
and Fannie May single handedly brought down the economy and created the home foreclosure

Why couldn't some of the baggage have gone in the dog carrier, and the poor dog be put in the car? When the dog started having diarrhea (probably from pure fear), good old Rombo's answer was to hose the car and Seamus down, jump back in the car and drive. What an absolute jackass. This is a red flag. What a cruel thing to do. Thank God someone else wound up with the dog later on.

This article only seems appropriate given that this whole GOP race to the White house is reminiscent of a Chevy Chase Vacation movie. Remember Grandma on top of the station wagon and the dog they forgot was tied to the car before they took off. That script was written for these guys.

And being a College Professor at a major university, a senator at one of our largest industrial states and a US senator from that same state are not real jobs. And, winning the Democratic party nomination in a contest against one of the best politicians in modern times and then having a record number (59M) Americans to vote for him as president... those are not a real accomplishments either. Content aside--in terms of writing, how does one "frequent" zoos "on several occasions"? Doesn't "frequent" mean one goes there a lot, and "on several occasions" imply just the opposite? Sounds Double-Plus Good to me...

Right. People may not be sure what's going on with Europe or the Federal Reserve or fracking but a good dog story, or in this case a bead one hits them right in the heart ("how could he do that...how could he...?). And don't make the defense that this was "just a dog" if you value your life.

With all due respect to dogs, this issue is just another tempest-in-a-teapot that these candidates substitute for talking about topics that your average voter is concerned about. I dunno, like unemployment, foreclosures, college grads who can't find jobs, bankers' ( lack of ) accountability, that kinda stuff. The Republican solution, dredged up for another go-round, seems like more of the same policies that got us into this mess.

Republicans whine about saving the auto industry and hundreds of thousands of jobs but they aren't against bailing out the banks that caused the mess in the first place and CEO's rewarded themselves millions in bonuses. What's so hard to understand about that?

The Democrats bailed out the banks, too. Especially Max Baucus (MT) who was at the same time selling stocks about which he had inside information. Interestingly, it isn't illegal for Congressmen to do that. But, it's highly immoral to pee on the dead enemy. But I digress. Obama was heavily supported by campaign contributions from Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac (strong Acorn affiliations). Gee, it must have been the Republicans. And poor Obama inherited it all, didn't he? Well, he's had three years to straighten things out and all the Democrats have increased the Federal budget triple historical spending. And added 200,000 Federal jobs. Big Government is killing this country. And it just keeps spending, spending, spending. The Republicans have voted against all the bills BECAUSE the Democrats want to tax and spend, tax and spend--the historical mantra of liberals. The Republicans promote and were agreeing to taxing the rich IF the Democrats would cut spending in equal amounts. The Democrats wouldn't agree to that. Those are the reasons for the stalemates in Congress. So you can't blame it on the Republicans.
