FLORENCE, SC -- Rick Santorum has only one word to describe the pro-Mitt Romney Super PAC television ad now running in South Carolina and Florida.
"Yuck."
The presidential hopeful said today that the Restore Our Future ad -- which claims Santorum voted to allow convicted felons vote -- is dishonest. "Now Gov. Romney has taken that and said Rick Santorum is for felons voting, and that is a lie," he told a crowd of nearly 150 people packed into Percy & Willie's restaurant. "And by the way, I think there is only two states that don't allow that. And so to go out and mislead the people of South Carolina as to what our record is on this, is just yuck."
Instead, Santorum said he supported a measure that would allow felons who have successfully completed parole to apply to have their voting rights restored.
The former Pennsylvania senator pledged to run a campaign based on integrity that would not "make claims about someone else that aren’t factually based." But he did not rule out going negative, the infamous pledge presidential rival Newt Gingrich made and has since broken. It was negative ads from the Romney Super PAC that have largely been credited for Gingrich's drop in the polls.
"I know a lot of candidates have been very upset about Gov. Romney and his PAC and what he’s doing attacking, as you know, Gov. Romney and Congressman Paul have been running for now for three states, a pretty hard negative campaign, which I think tells you a little bit about what they think of their ability to appeal to people’s better sides that now they have to go out there and just hammer everybody out there," said Santorum.
"If you do it legitimately that's fine, if you do it legitimately. But repeatedly I think Cong. Gingrich has made the comment, made the point that Gov. Romney has not been accurate in what his assessment is," he added.
With a spike in the polls and yesterday's endorsement from a group of conservative leaders, the Santorum campaign will have deeper pockets than ever before. The hit from Romney supporters shows he being taken seriously as a contender, but learning from Gingrich's fall in Iowa, there will be increased pressure for him to respond to the negative ads and mailers now beginning to flood the Palmetto State.
"I expect that from Barack Obama I don’t’ expect that from a Republican running for president," said Santorum.
"We are better than that."

"We are better than that."
What alternative universe is this guy living in???? LOL
Ironic that Romney takes another republican's poposal completely out of context but he's indignant when others do the same.
Mitten's record for integrity is a bit spotty.
Not defending Willard, I'm a democrat and I'm committed to voting for our great president a second time, but people have to remember that the candidates themselves have no control over what a super PAC says or does. They are legally prohibited from coordinating in any way with the super PACs.
For Santorum to even suggest that the republicans are better than that in reference to Romney's PAC's work is ludicrious at best. I fully expect a totally rude, crude, dirty, disgusting, ugly, disrespectful, lying, cheating, traitorous, evil campaign by whoever is nominated. They have already proven total disrespect for the president and should be thoroughly condemned for that. I am fifty eight and I have never seen such utter hatred directed to a president.
Expect bottom of the barrel tactics from bottom of the barrel candidates.
Biased, out of context, soundbites are being used AGAINST me? egads! How did this happen? lol.
"live by the sword, die by the sword". The "holier than thou" nonsense is pretty amusing, however.
Funny how Romney can attack Newt and Santorum and nobody says anything, but if they attack him the republican higher-ups say they are hurting the party . Completely double standard. Ask Romney about his MEXICAN family and why he votes against the new immigration laws.
Again, not defending Willard Romney, I'm voting for Obama again, but I must reiterate that no candidates are legally allowed to coordinate in any way with the super PACs that promote them. They cannot tell them what to say or not say or tell them how to spend or not spend their money.
Also, Romney doesn't have a mexican heritage, he has ancestors that migrated to mexico to escape American prosecution for their polygamous lifestyle. They didn't interbreed with any mexicans, they formed their own commune, much like the FLDS of today.
Ricky, you are such an eloquent speaker.
This is all so very amusing. Thanks to the 5 conservative knuckleheads on the Supreme Court, the Repubs got what they wanted with the Super PACS.
The amusing part is that they are using it against each other. The Dems don't have to lift a finger or spend a dime.
Vote independant.
Call me crazy, but I really don't see the problem with restoring the voting rights of felons that have served their time.
The Right wants felons because most felons are undereducated and low wage earners. These happen to be the demographics of Dems.
Put them in prison and take away their right to vote.
They recognize that most of America is Liberal to moderate and don't really like "job creators". So they need to limit the vote to compete.
If you think Bush and Obama were busy digging graves for the American people, and both were, wait until you see how quickly a Romney, Santorum, or Gingrich will shovel the dirt in on top of us!
These politicians, Democrats and Republicans alike, strive towards one common goal...maintaining the corrupted Washington Establishment, the status quo.
Only one Candidate speaks out loudly and clearly about dismantling the corrupted govening system, and returning control of the government back to the people. We all know who that Candidate is! He's the one politicians chide, ridicule, and ignore, but are actually scared sh*tless of.
Sorry, but the guy you are talking about seems to be nothing but a niave old man, dreaming about the days of the dust bowls.
Good one Rick. "We are better than that" Nobody is Swift Boating this year?
Stay clear of Santorum - He is a loser and liar like Dumbama.
hanseat,
Who is your candidate?
obama/biden or clinton 2012! elizabeth warren 2012!
Kay,
I hope that Elizabeth Warren runs for President the next go around. She is incredible.
Isn’t it time to just look at the FACTS and the facts tells us that Romney flip flops more than a poor fish out of water. They are all liars (every party) but this guy takes it a new level.

A tale of two Mitts
The problem here is that as weird as many think Santorum is, and I am in that crowd, what he might like to happen and what he could actually force to have happen are two very different things. The Presidential seat is limited , to a great extent to what congress passes to him.
With Romney, it is much different. the things he suggests he would or could do, he easily could do as president. That is illegally use Pacs, stepping around the law to get out his negative messages, using the seat to further his own business dealings, things like that.
It is definitely reprehensible that there are politicians out there who believe that once a felon has hpaid his debt to society, that person should continue to be punished. However, with the unsavory definition of Santorum that is out there, who is Ricky to say "yuck"?
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
I guess my question is, how does someone run a positive campaign when there's nothing positive to say about any of the candidates? They're all running negative campaigns because there's so much negative about these candidates to use. If they're going to say nothing but positive things and still be truthful, it's going to be a very quiet campaign. The thing is, with the exception of Ron Paul, there's nothing that distinguishes these candidates from each other. They're all trying to prove they're more conservative than the other guy by adopting this extreme position or that radical belief or some other insane idea they think will win over right wing voters. The bottom line is there simply isn't anything positive about any of these buffoons including Ron Paul. They're all very unbalanced and dangerous people.
Everyone else, on Santorum: "Yuck."
Oh please, spare us the hot breeze snookums. The GOP has proven beyond any doubt that they are certainly not better than that. What an asinine statement to make in public. Or private for that matter.
Huntsman got out of the race because of the toxic atmosphere. Its unfortunate that he was the only one that could see the cynical dividing of the country that the rest are performing. It became apparent in 2008 that the Republicans were all about who they were against, but clueless as to what they were for. Then just as now, they were definitely not in favor of a "united" States. Huntsman may be gone, but the atmosphere remains, and the toxins are increasing.
Huntsman got out because he's polling behind Stephen Colbert in South Carolina. He was the only non-crazy in the GOP clown car, but he is a very conservative politician, make no mistake.
Yes, very conservative. As far as I can see, he is the only one with a modicum of integrity. The only one that doesn't ooze vile spite for those that differ with him.
Also, two Mormons in the race is not a good strategy for the dark side.
I think this says it best......Republicans want you to vote for the one who lost to the one who lost to Obama! Priceless Newt!
Hey Rick,
If you're going to call Gingrich "Congressman Gingrich" and Romney "Governor Romney", you could at least have the class to call Obama "President Obama". Or are you one of the birthers who don't believe he is legitimate?
Believe it or not, I actually have a "friend" with two Masters degrees (Engineering and Architecture) who is so far to the Right he makes Attila the Hun look like a Progressive! This guy, who really ought to know better, fervently believes, in spite of all evidence to the contrary, that (a) Obama is a Muslim and (b) he wasn't born in the USA. Of course, also being an evangelical Christian, my friend gets his information directly from God, so why bother about evidence? :-D
It must be great (and so convenient) to have all your questions answered for you before you even ask them!
The GOP is in an unbelievable mess as a result of their cynical and negative leadership and their complete inability to acknowledge the failure of their ideologically based policies. This will not stop until they have ruined each other and their respective campaigns, there are no winners, even their ardent supporters are sick and tired of this. As a professional the first thing you learned is not to publicly criticize others in your profession or you will all be painted with the same brush. The voting public will not forget all these negative and scurrilous comments no matter who emerges as their candidate!
"We're better than that???" Oh, please! Republicans invented negative campaigning! Get real!
