Huntsman wins key SC newspaper endorsement

CHARLESTON, SC -- Former Utah governor Jon Huntsman won the endorsement of South Carolina's largest newspaper, The State, on Sunday morning. The announcement comes six days before the Palmetto State primary as Huntsman attempts to quickly gain last- minute traction after spending very little time in the state. Huntsman finished a distant third in the New Hampshire primary after campaigning there for nearly six months straight.

This is the second time Huntsman has been endorsed by a major newspaper with just days to go before an early state primary this cycle. Shortly before the New Hampshire primary, the Boston Globe also backed the former ambassador to China. Like the Globe, The State praises both Huntsman and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney but stops short of endorsing the front-runner.

"There are actually two sensible, experienced grownups," The State editorial said, giving a nod to front-runner Romney. "And while Mr. Romney is far more appealing than any of the other choices, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman is more principled, has a far more impressive resume and offers a significantly more important message."

The State, which endorsed Barack Obama and John McCain in the 2008 primary and McCain in that year's general election, said Huntsman stands "heads and shoulders above the field on foreign policy," praised his economic recovery plan and called his terms as Utah governor demonstrative of a "true conservative" record.

Former RNC Chairman Michael Steele and former DNC Chairman Howard Dean discuss the endorsement of Jon Huntsman by The State newspaper in South Carolina.

The paper also highlighted Huntsman's decision to accept a post as Obama's ambassador to China as a strength.

"He was a popular and successful governor in an extremely conservative state, well positioned to become a leading 2012 presidential contender, when Mr. Obama asked him to serve in arguably our nation’s most important diplomatic post, U.S. ambassador to China," the editorial said. "It could be political suicide, but he didn’t hesitate. As he told our editorial board, 'When the president asks you to serve, you serve.'"

This endorsement will certainly boost Huntsman's struggling campaign here in South Carolina but could be a last-minute addition that comes too late. Although Huntsman has been long supported by big names in the state like former state attorney general Henry McMaster and sitting attorney general Alan Wilson, his organization here is struggling. With very little financial resources, a tiny and often frustrated staff, and low name recognition, Huntsman is working hard not to finish last. In the latest state-wide polls, Huntsman remains in the single digits, well behind Romney and Newt Gingrich.

"I want to beat expectations like we did in New Hampshire. You have to beat expectations to keep moving on," a cautious Huntsman told reporters last night in Hilton Head. "Let's not draw too many conclusions until we get to the 24- or 48-hours mark."

Regardless, the campaign is "so pleased" that the paper chose Huntsman.  "This endorsement continues the momentum our campaign is carrying out of a late surge in New Hampshire," spokesman Tim Miller told NBC News on Sunday morning.

At the same time, the candidate has long been generally skeptical of the actual impact of endorsements at the voting booth.

"Endorsements, I think, are way overplayed in politics," Huntsman said last night, before receiving The State's backing. "It still comes down to individuals having to determine for themselves who are best able to lead this country."

While claiming God has him on speed dial - Perry is defending urinating on dead people!

WASHINGTON -- GOP presidential hopeful Rick Perry is accusing the Obama administration of "over-the-top rhetoric" and "disdain for the military" in its condemnation of a video that purportedly shows Marines urinating on dead bodies in Afghanistan.

No one has been charged in the case, but officials in the U.S. and abroad have called for swift punishment of the four Marines.

A military criminal investigation and an internal Marine Corps review are under way. The Geneva Conventions forbid the desecration of the dead.

Perry tells CNN's "State of the Union" that he thinks the Marines involved should be reprimanded, but not pursued with criminal charges.

Perry said "18, 19-year-old kids make stupid mistakes all too often and that's what's occurred here."

If Perry represents compassionate Christians, I'll take a pass! BLECH!

Huntsman puzzles me. At first blush he seems to be intelligent, rational, and experienced. But a truly rational person knows that anyone with those disqualifications has no chance of winning the Republican nomination.

I still think Huntsman is running right now more with the goal of drawing off a few percentage points of support from Romney so that somebody else can beat him. Unfortunately for that strategy, that somebody else would be either Gingrich or Santorum who are even more unpalatable.

You know Dennis - I think the tea party movement has waned because it's issues are now at the forefront.

In other words it has gotten it's message across, or at least all of the politicians are focused on the debt.

Even the dems.

As for the peeing thing, I defer to Daniel Pearl.

Truly a shame. The only real one who shows a level of sanity.

I still like Obama, but if we end up up with a second choice, Huntsman is the best of the group.

Pleas SC send Santorum and Gingritch home. Perry is already toast.

Sorry Tom... the juvenile behavior the Marines exhibited, only inflames an already violatile situation.

The Geneva Conventions forbid the desecration of the dead.

There are rules in place for a reason - of all people Marines should understand that.

Wow.......We agree! now the punishment is up to debate. There are ways to show these marines they were wrong. I made a huge mistake during a "This is not a drill" Russian Submarine tracking event. The NC2 plotter (weapons tracking table) malfunctioned (servo on the red dot fried) The Captain in CIC asked me "Petty Officer whats wrong with the tracker" To which I responded " Its Broke sir!" Which caused laughter tobreak out for a second. Needless to say a week later I was attending XO's mast and then Captians Mast. The end result was I was restricted to ship for 3 days (We were in the Med and would not touch land for a few more weeks) and forfeited my 2nd good conduct medal.

Dennis - you might want to put the link to the poll, otherwise your statement is worthless. consider that in NC PPP shows that tea party isn't a huge favorite, but no means as bad off as your poll. Being PPP is a pretty reliable poll, you might not want to put that link in, because it will show how worthless a source you are using to make your point.

If you saw a dead person on the street and urinated on him right here in the USA, what do you think would happen to you? The way you people are talking is like you are advocating breaking the law, preforming necrophilia, persecuting religion and just plain childish behavior by the United Stated Marines who are suppose to be held to a higher standard than your common street junkie. These "men" are representing the United States of America to the ENTIRE WORLD, this is inexcusable behavior and they should be court martialed, given a dishonorable discharge and thrown in prison. Wearing two different colored socks is a mistake, urinating on the bodies of falling soldiers is criminal.

Spanky: I'd argue the Tea Party has waned because they were discovered as having no game plan, no direction, no candidate and no ideas...they are the same old disgruntled, uneducated older white guys who want to holler and rant and pitchfork their complaints about being 'overtaxed' in the era of the lowest relative tax rates of the last two decades. They're simply irrelevant. The issue that has real staying power is income inequality and Tea Partiers as a group are not smart enough to figure out how to embrace that one for any meaningful or lasting impact.

We should be the envy of the world. They should strive to emulate us. If others had pissed on American dead people like Perry would be outraged. Certainly this is not the way to make friends and influence people. We look like boors or barbarians in the eyes of other nations. The ugly American has no bounds unless we take action to punish such behavior. Those "kids" are old enough to serve and die for their country so they should be old enough to know better than to do such despicable things. I was taught by my late father that to gain respect one must first be willing to give respect. If we are to be respected in the Arab world it is time we started giving respect. We don't have to agree with them and their beliefs but they deserve respect as much as we do.

It's comments like that by the far right that eats away at their following, everytime Perry or one of the otherr wingnuts say these things they alienates more and more people, pushing them away from the once proud Republican brand. No sane person thinks urinating on dead people is proper conduct for our troops, and Americans in an overwhelming majority dont want to go back into Iraq.

Ummmm, no...wait...not just no, but HELL NO! As brave and admirable as these Marines once were, nothing short of a DD will suffice.

I spoke with my nephew after this happened, and as he heads to Afghanistan from Twenty-nine Palms, his quote was: "Those guys better hope they are out of the country by the time we get there".

Seems The Incontinent Four have made quite a few enemies within their own ranks.

Two things: one the endorsement proves there are some republicans left that have not lost their minds, or self respect.

secondly I taught mt children to have more respect for a dead bird they might find in the yard much less a human, even if they were the enemy, their behavior was shameful and they should not be representing the USA in any capacity. Whats the point if you are going to become the same thing you are supposedly defending yourself from, whats next dragging bodies through the streets, and sick you tube videos, I got no use for the crap they pulled, it has no place in our military, they should be dealt with in the harshest manner allowed.

As far as this "peeing controversy" goes while not smart because of it's propaganda value, big deal. How is it any different than leaving playing card with the army division insignia on the enemy's corpse like they did in Viet Nam. In my opinion not much. So the tribal turds find in offensive. Who cares they're a oversensitive bunch of sand crammers. Instead of being upset over how the dead are treated they should start concentrating on how they treat each other while alive.

Unless you have been in a combat zone with the enemy shooting at you, you really have nothing worthwhile to say about the Marines pissing on the bodies of the very people who have been trying to kill them. These are young men placed in situations that produce a level of stress that you can not possibly understand. They are not to be commended for their actions but neither are they to be condemned. A reprimend is an appropriate level of punishment, but nothing more. What is disgusting is the POS Obama trying to make hay with this.

Bullshi#. No, I've never been in a combat zone, but my brother has, as both a Marine, and later as an Army Infantryman. He has taken enemy fire, he has watched his friends lose brain matter, and I an 100% confident in saying there is no circumstance in which my brother would have ever, urinated on the dead. You know why? Because to do so is disgusting and inhumane, and even at the age of 17 when he first signed up, he was a grown-a$$ man. This action was not a "youthful mistake," it was a vile and hateful act by grown men, and any child of 12 is capable of understanding how reprehensible it is. These young men should be dishonorably discharged at the very least. They do not represent the principles of the country I know and love.

Because if he was to un-quit, that would be an article they could talk about. "Huntsman back from the dead"

In my opinion he's better than any Republicans, in his more moderate political ideology and personal character. But the repubs is all about business owners, oil, war, tax cut for the rich, big hyped words of wealth and glory. So Huntsman doesn't connect with those who became accustomed to abusive politics for their benefits. They think Romney can keep giving them that and they are dreaming because America doesn't operate in a bubble. They are in denial of our social situation and position in the world and will hear anything from the biggest liar to forego looking into the mirror.

Considering how few people actually read newspapers anymore (tv and Internet are the popular ways to get the news), I don't see this helping Mr. Huntsman very much. But, it is nice that someone recognizes that there is someone besides Mitt Romney in the GOP field that has experience in both being governors and businessmen.

You raise a good point however though readership of traditional newspapers is way down such endorsements grab headlines on local and statewide TV stations and as your posting and mine here today show those 'newspaper endorsements' grab headlines on the MSM websites and quickly filter out via Facebook and Twitter.

If anyone still reads newspapers, it's the establishment, including the folks with deeper pockets and including journalists themselves (there isn't much original reporting on the internet which regurgitates the original reporting for the most part from mainstream media) and yes, those do still have enormous influence eventually, with the electorate (Same way CNN and FOX news have outsized influence despite in reality reaching a miniscule portion of the electorate...because of WHICH electorate they reach..in CNN's case, the educated, the movers and shakers...in FOX's case...well, we know who they reach...)

Every rare once in a while I will buy a local paper for the want ads or when something big happens locally, but for the most part our hometown paper has taken a wide swing to the extreme (tea party) right in the last few years even though our community, as a whole, has not. I wrote the Editor many times about it and her explanation was "it's the media's job to expose the lies of the current administration", I responded "Only when a Democrat is President?" and of course her response was an afirming silence.

I guess the moral of the story is that local papers do not always represent the views of the majority of the population, but are representitive of a very small sampling of any given town

              Dennis,

Originally, that is the way the system was set up, the winner was president, second place was the VP. And mostly, in the past, the vice presidency had no real power - just the tie breaking vote in the senate. Another note, the Vice President was only to take over the Presidency until new elections could be scheduled if something happened to the President.

              Ideology,

The problem I have with Americans Elect is that they are also using a non-profit status for political purposes. The Popular Amendment Movement is not an official organization, nor is it trying to collect any donations for furthering their cause....it is strictly a totally grassroots movement that relies on each participant to go out and circulate the two constitutional amendment petitions. Have any of you gotten involved yet? If not, why not? If you want real political change, this is the only way we will ever get it. Note that the method of selecting the candidates for the general election are solely dependent on the SINGLE National Primary day election to be held just eight weeks prior to the general election. There will be NO national party conventions to select any candidate for president, senator, or representative. All three offices are to be filled only through the primary/general election process. Dennis, '68 was my first year to vote, since I was born 11/15/44. But yes, politics and our election system was far different back then.....thanks to no real electronic age.

Both candidates should be required to be non-party affiliated....all registered voters and candidates should be registered as INDEPENDENTS to be part of this party and truly be GDI's (that is what I became known as in OH when I refused to support either party after '68.)

If you want something new, phine, then you should have been supporting the PAM the past 15 months. That is the only way that we will get rid of the money corruption

                phinephancy,

Freedom of speech will ensure that money stays in politics.

The way to get the money out would be a Constitutional Amendment. Do you see two-thirds of the House and Senate voting for that amendment – I don’t.

The next option would be to call a third Continental Congress.

                Dennis,

It was just an idea to be considered. Right now, the GOP cannot even compromise inside its own caucus, but I was thinking long term.

And as for your assassination suggestion, do you think, since John Boehner is now Speaker, that there are those plotting for the deaths of the President and Vice President so he, Boehner can be in charge? I would sincerely hope we are a country that doesn't believe that a "coup" is the answer to political differences.

And that is exactly what the PAM is all about.....getting the constitutional amendment passed that will ban all corporate, union, non-profit, PAC, SuperPAC, etc. campaign contributions AND third-party advertising. It calls for each state to call a constitutional convention to pass the two amendments. That is the OTHER constitutional method for passing amendments and is the route for the indirect method being used by the Popular Amendment Movement.

                Article 5:

                    Dennis,

I just see something bad happening to our country with all the money now being flooded into our political system. I don't know how to solve the problem, I just know the problem exists and that maybe it is up to us, the people, to start to figure out a way to solve it. SCOTUS did us no favor with their Citizens United decision, but the problem has been around longer than that. First step, in my opinion, is legislation stating that corporations are NOT people and money is not free speech.

Look, I am not trying to upset you, or anyone else for that matter, I am just pointing out what I feel is a real problem in today's politics. And it is not just at the presidential level, but in all levels of politics. What is it the president once said, "If it is a man made problem, then man can fix it." I absolutely agree with that.

You are not upsetting me at all, I’m easy to get along with but I am a realists. I point out the roadblocks so that everyone can see how difficult some change can be. I agree 100% that we the people no longer have control of our country and until we get the money out of politics the rich and powerful will decide our future.

More bad news … Here comes “Citizens United” part 2.

In a brief filed Jan 10, 2012 in the Fourth Circuit Court the RNC argues that the federal ban on corporate donations is unconstitutional in large part because it applies across the board to all corporations: While the concept of corporate contributions evokes images of organizations like Exxon or Halliburton, with large numbers of shareholders and large corporate treasuries, the reality is that most corporations in the United States are small businesses more akin to a neighborhood store.

Empowering corporation to donate unlimited money directly to candidates.

Can I just start beating my head against a brick wall now, or is it too crowded and I have to wait in line? Why is the RNC doing this when the polls show that the American people WANT the money out of politics?

The game plan is exposed – destroy unions and empower corporation to donate unlimited money directly to candidates insuring more money for Republicans while limiting (hopefully destroying) the Democratic fund raising base.

The thing most people don't realize today is the benefits they now get (without being a union member) is because of unions. 40 hour work week, paid vacations, health benefits. Thank a union member for that. And unions now only represent about 7% of today's workforce.

Here's my adage, it is the Golden Rule. He who has the gold - rules.

                    phinephancy,

People talk about starting a third party but most States make it difficult. We already have a half dozen National Parties but not all of them are in every State.

Everyone was amazed by the rise of the Tea Party … but … how many ran on ballots under the Tea Party? They ran on the Republican Party ticket.

I worked in a union shop when I was young. I was a production Supervisor and later a Manager in a union workplace. I also worked as a consultant and as contract labor in union shops. I never had problems that I didn’t have in non-union shops. I seldom saw what some call lazy workers or abuse of power.

Americans Elect will be on the ballot in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia. Jon Huntsman would be the perfect candidate. He would pull equally from the GOP and the Dems. He is actually very conservative, but a sane conservative.

His economic policies would balance the budget not put our country further into the hole as ALL of the other GOP candidates plans would do. Do some research. Perhaps, this is the reason the Wall Street Journal endorsed his plan.

Has anyone looked at his amazing record as gov of Utah? The state was a well oiled economic machine under JH. Even the Democrats there loved him.

He actually gets things done. He is able to pull together the best ideas from both parties. He may not be a person that has perfect sound bites, but that is because he actually has full thoughts that take more than a sentence to say.

Paul gets the endorsement of the most popular state legislator, a tea party favorite, and his numbers are surging in SC. And you don't even cover the story. MSNBC must really be afraid of Paul.

This is a 2 man race!! Romney and Paul are the only candidates with the national organization to take down Obama, money to do it, and the head to head poll numbers to TIE with Obama.

I disagree, Huntsman is old GOP, just what the party needs. A win in SC could be the catalyst he needs to go all the way. It is far more impressive to get the endorsement of two major newspapers than the endorsement of 150 evangelical leaders.

this is a kiss of death for Huntsman- why would conservatives embrace a liberal that has now been endorsed by the paper that previously endorsed the marxist Obama?

Also note, Sam Webb, the leader of the party, called Obama a friend back in 2008.

In 1972, Gus Hall, then leader of the Communist Party USA, wrote in his book, "A Lame Duck in Turbulent Waters," describing what had been the long-time party policy:[10]

Our electoral policy has for 25 years been expressed in the phrase, 'the three legs of a stool'....The stool was constructed at a time when the Party was under sharp attack....a reflection of the Party's response to the difficulties.
The flexibility was contained in the idea that no one leg of the stool was the main leg. Depending on the political pressures, one could choose a particular leg or legs. In fact the concept was built on the idea that when the other two legs, namely, the Communist Party and the forces of political independence, got strong enough, then and only then would the stool sit on three legs. But until that day comes the one operating leg would be the liberal wing of the Democratic Party.

In 2010, in a report prepared for the Communist Party 29th National Convention, several members of the Young Communist League USA wrote;[13]

Currently, the conditions rarely if ever allow us to run open Communists for office. When members do run for office, it is within the auspices of the Democratic Party. Otherwise, we find ourselves supporting progressive (and in some instances not-so-progressive) Democratic candidates. Despite how much many of us would love to run comrades for office as Communists, we all agree that this is how we currently have to function in this political climate.

You also have no music in your soul.

I have a song(s) in my hear every day.

But I find it curious that you think only marxists have "music in their souls". How is an ideology that is opposed to personal liberty one that brings "music to the soul"?

And how many Theocrats are running around the GOP hoping to turn the US into a Christian Theocracy? Far more than the shrinking CPUSA. 99.999 % of us on the left could care less about Marxists and we would be just as happy as you to see them find a flat planet to sail off of.

As to Socialists/Marxists/Fascists, let me put it this way ... if you put a Socialist a Marxist and a Fascist into a room with a gun and two rounds in the chamber, at the end of the day only one would survive and that person would not be the Socialist. They do not like each other!

The CPUSA can do whatever they want and it will be to no avail. We on the blue side know that their agenda is dead and we have no desire for it ... we are capitalists with a heart. Time for you on the red side to stop kicking a dead horse.

This state just recently took down their Confederate flag. What more can you say about that. Oh,I did waste my money on a vacation to their Myrtle Beach. They should call it cigarette butt beach because it was one huge ash tray with rednecks as far as you could see.

I was stationed at the Naval weapons station for a while and my daughter was born at the Charelston Naval Hospital. My favorite tee shirt is "Where the hell is beautiful downtown Goose Creek?"I agree Phine, most real southern states have good food. And I count northern Florida. Down where I live most people are from someplace else and the culture is a mix of NY/NJ/Mass.

Aside from my daughter being born just after a deployment, the things I remember best were

                                  1. A Cheeseburger at McDonald's (they were not global then)

                                  2. Seeing the band "Boston" at the Columbia Coliseum. An awesome evening. Back then it wasnt so easy communicating when you were over seas. Calling home meant waiting in long lines for a 15 min call radio transferred to the US.

Even the Huntsman's family has a reputation of not throwing money at their children and having them have to earn their own way.

Don't just take someones word for something, take the time to look it up and see what is what. And the biggest endorsement a candidate can have is the people of the state he served liking him. Romney and Santorum can't make that claim.

                                                              Shelia,

Excellent points. I wonder if the members of the GOP base realize the reason that President Obama tapped Jon Huntsman for the ambassadorship to China? Because he knew that Huntsman could be a formidable opponent in 2012. However, the GOP has now gone so far right, that won't be a problem.

Phine, I still have concerns about the Ryan plan, I wish it would come up at debate so we can get some idea of how Huntsman would put it into practice. It doesn't sound at all good to me and I have read different things on Jon Huntsman's take. I know he endorses it, I just don't know if he endorses it as a starting point or as it stands in its entirety. So it is still a big concern.

Let's see it. What have you got to hide? HE PAID NO TAXES! HE'S THE TOP 1% WITH AN INCOME OF OVER $250 MILLION DOLLARS! Shall I say more?

NOT once did Mitt use his own money! He's a vulture who likes to fire people! Greedy bastrad ruined peoples' lives! He is a disgrace to the Middle Class! I don't care if you are a Republican, Democrat, or an Independent, Mitt is NOT a representative for the people, by the people; ONLY THE TOP 1%!!

The 1%ers that are around him don't seem to mind his wanting to raise taxes on the wealthies while giving breaks to the less wealthy. As a matter of fact those 1%ers have asked congress to raise their taxes so that revenue can be generated.

Obama is working for the middle class, he's on the side of hard working Americans and those less fortunate... we need a second Obama term to ensure our country is on solid footing. We need the Affordable Health Care Law which will enable every American an opportunity to acquire affordable health care... by the way which should be a right not a privilege; we need a large infrastructure plan which will put millions back to work; we need fair tax policy, tax breaks for folks making less than $250,000 and slightly higher taxes for those making a million+; and, we need to preserve Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, however some adjustments should be made, i.e. means testing and gradually increasing the eligibility age.

Obama and the Dems’ are all about the middle class so get out there and start campaigning vote for the Dems' so we can take back the house and increase our numbers in the Senate... then we'll see real change in this country.

On the other hand... if the GOP take over the white house be prepared to see the Affordable Health Care law be repealed, and we'll be once again at the mercy of big insurance companies; be prepared to watch Medicare and Social Security privatized; and, be prepared to see the tax rate for our dwindling middle class increase while the tax rate for the top two percent decrease...

Under a GOP led administration the middle class and our seniors will lose our safety net, we'll have higher taxes and we'll be reduced to accepting minimum wage jobs... and the rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer!

THINK TWICE BEFOR YOU PLACE YOU VOTE...

He could garner enough independent and Democratic votes as well as thinking Republican votes to change this election from a close but Democratic party victory to a victory for Huntsman. To run against Obama you need to field someone at least as smart as he is and the Republican field is generally lacking in the brains department. IMO the best thing this country could do in this election cycle would be to turn out most of the congress and hire Huntsman as President. Huntsman could run this nation and would not pander to special interests as much as Obama and certainly not as much as Romney or any of the clowns running in the Republican primaries.

When I make these above remarks I am excepting Dr. Paul from my consideration. He is both smart and principled but not electable as against Obama because he is a man both ahead and behind the times and Obama certainly is, sadly, a man of this time.

If everyone who "...would vote for Ron Paul, except that he can't win" actually voted for him, he'd win in a landslide. Maybe he's not pretty enough for Americans; they'd be more likely to elect effing Britney Spears/Kim Kardashian, and call it a victory for women's rights...

I wish he got a higher position in Obama's cabinet. Listening to a few things the man has said, I believe he truly has unity in mind for the country. Not just the interest of a few powerful and rich people, but everyone.

I live in SC and am undecided although Jon Huntsman is beginning to appeal to me. If President Obama thought Mr Huntsman's qualifications we stellar enough to appoint him Ambassador, President Obama might be looking over his shoulder right now. I will watch the Debate tomorrow night and hope I can take away something that will help me decide before next Saturday. The bottom line is that we cannot have 4 more years of this sitting president!

When you watch the debate with Huntsman, if you haven't watched one before, don't expect quick one-liners from this man. I really hope that with his rise in the polls, no matter how small, he gets more debate time. So far most of the questions have gone to Romney, Gingrich and Santorum. Any voter who wants a balanced budget and is truly fiscally conservative would vote for Huntsman before any of the other candidates.

Get a clue and look at JH's record as Gov of Utah and his service to the country under THREE Republican presidents. Doesn't it make you wonder why FOUR Presidents have had Jon Huntsman work for them? Maybe it is because it is that he knows what he is talking about.
