BLYTHEWOOD, SC -- The vulture flies no more.
Gov. Rick Perry's address to about 40 diners at famed Southern cookin' joint Lizards Thicket Thursday offered a healthy helping of anti-Obama rhetoric with a side of swipes at the "insiders" who are running for the presidency.
But his least appetizing metaphor for Mitt Romney -- one in which he graphically compared Romney's former company Bain Capital to a vulture picking at the carcasses of damaged companies -- had vanished from his speech.
The Texas governor first unveiled the "vulture capitalism" term on Tuesday, echoing a similar line of attack to Newt Gingrich has used against the former Massachusetts governor.
Perry used the term three times in one speech yesterday but then appeared to abruptly drop it during later campaign stops.
The wave of Bain attacks has subsided as conservative commentators ripped Perry for being "anti-free-market" and providing fodder for Democratic critics of Romney, should the presumed frontrunner become the GOP's nominee.
In Blythewood, he began a sentence that sounded like a possible wind-up to a defense against those pundits.
"I'm a capitalist and I believe in the profit motive, but there is a point in time where we have to say 'Wait a minute, what is going on here?'" he began.
But instead of launching into the story of workers in Gaffney, SC laid off at the hands of Bain -- a staple for the last few days in South Carolina -- he dinged the US Treasury for its cozy relationships with Wall Street banks, a months-old critique.
Perry's tempered criticism comes against the backdrop of a defection by a top Perry backer, Barry Wynn, to Romney's campaign. Wynn told the Associated Press that the Texas governor's recent attacks on Romney's record at Bain had spurred his decision to switch sides in the primary.
Asked about the "vulture" capitalism swipe on a Fox News interview Thursday, Perry did not disavow the attack outright but implied that his examination of Bain's record could help voters determine if Romney is a "flawed candidate" before the general election.
"The fact is, this process is about winnowing out individuals and testing whether or not they're a flawed candidate or not," he said. "And I will tell you when people can point to where you made a quick profit and kicked people out of their jobs, that is an issue that has got to be addressed."

So, they're all getting the "memo"...even INDEPENDENT Rick...
The Holy See enforcing the 11th commandment;)
---------------------------------------------------------------
Even the "fiery" Newton has cooled his jets...
Newt Gingrich was expected to arrive in South Carolina on the warpath against Republican front-runner Mitt Romney after stinging loss in New Hampshire last night. But that wasn't the case.

From where I sit , it is a weak field at best .
Now is the time for one of them to stand up and grow a pair . Worry about it later . Up till now not a one has shown sighns of having any real leadership ability . As we all know we need a real leader now .
bob
I watched a really old movie last night, "State of the Union" with Spenser Tracey playing the Mitt Romney part, Katherine Hepburn in the Mrs. Romney role, and Angela Lansbury in the Rupert Murdoch role.
How absolutely spot on that movie still is, even after over 60 years. It was all about a basically nice guy, businessman being convinced to run for President, how politics is dividing the country and how pandering to the various interest groups to get the nomination corrupts even the best people.
On Perry backing off... I guess he finally understood the memo, it just took a few days longer for it to sink in that he's supposed to be a Republican.
As for who the GOP should vote for, look who comes out and still has there principals left..... Huntsman, Paul ?
This has nothing to do with Perry agreeing with what Romney did at Bain Capital (I don't think he's smart enough to realize what Romney did at Bain Capital). The republicans have simply realized they have their nominee, and now they want to make sure they can get favors, positions and influence if by some miracle he gets elected.
Now all of you little boys in the sand box ... stop fighting!!! I promise all of you nice new toys if we can unite against Obama ... all of you!!!!!!
We have sheep to herd and we have very little time to waste .... a few have already gotten off the path and too much hard core truth will cause a stampede and we may never get them back .........
Somebody told on poor Ricky and now he has to play nice. I wonder if he was taken out to the wood shed?
Memo from the people, not the Republican party. His "Vulture" comment has cost him dearly with the voters.
That "vulture capitalism" comment didn't endear him to the vulture capitalists that run the Teapublican party, and Perry found that out the hard way. But make no doubt, the rest of us will remember, we've seen the results of vulture capitalism.
If Romney becomes the Teapublican nominee, his past will come back to haunt him, big time.
"Memo from the people, not the Republican party. His "Vulture" comment has cost him dearly with the voters. Cost him the 5% he pulled in NH? Or maybe the 8% he's polling in SC. Define "cost him dearly." One can't lose what one never had.
Personally, I have a lot more respect for Rick now than I ever did before.
Come on Perry, man up! Don't give in to those teapublican thugs! Tell your story and put the VULTURE back into your talkin' points!
Someone up there in the Republican kingdom told him to Sh&& up, or else they would spill the beans about him!
Ha ha...It's great to see the Republicans tearing each other apart for a change, instead of tearing up President Obama.
Romney and Bain are insects, termites, they fly in and destroy everything. And he is a child of illegals from Mexico.
Mitt Romney is an Anchor Baby!
It's too bad that every time Perry says something great he backs off later.
@Iamwoman: your a discredit to your gender. Romney does not destroy everthing. He was successful 70% of the time which in the VC world is nothing short of miraculous. He saved the Olympics, he balanced the budget in Mass. Also, his father was born in Mexico to American citizens. Therfore he was an American citizen. Romney was later born to American parents while living in Michigan. How in this scenario do you seen an achor baby?
Romney is the best, most qualified person to be President and he will be our next POTUS.
Go Mitt!
Funny that Mitt was born of American parents in a foreign country just like Obama was born of an American parent (you only need one) yet I don't hear birthers going after Mitt. It only counts when the person is not a conservative.
Mitt Romney was born in Michigan. Since when is that a foreign country?
LMAO Perry finally showing his democrat roots like he was in the early 90's before he went for the $$$ and became a teapublican. Perry like Regan were Democrat is sheep's clothing lol
And Obama was born in Hawaii, which (the last time I checked) was still a state of the union.
Obama was born in Kenya and has dual citizenship.
Fake outrage from fake candidates. Phony conservatives defending phony capitalism.
Republicans must never call each other "thieves or swindlers", lest their victims hear it and find a new hiding place for their belongings.
sorry dems' say all you want. You have a big loser in the white house and 11 more months and that turkey is gone. Bailing out banks and anyone with a campaign promise while spending america into oblivion isn't exactly something to aspire to.
I honestly cannot pick out any point here. I seriously believe you are a troll.
Nobody bother responding to this guy. A quick look through his posts reveals he is a parodist.
Perry, you are a wimp. If you can't even stand behind the 1st amendment to try to win an election, what would you do in the White House? It's a good thing that you'll never be president, because Iran could probably force you to disarm unilaterally over the phone.
Time to hang up your six-shooters, rhinestone; it's boot hill for your campaign.
We already got rid of the turkey that bailed out the banks. His name was Dubya.
A little truth slips out and the candidates have to bite their lip and be quiet.
"Perry backs off..."
Wuss
Anybody who supports Romney needs to google: "The Mormon Law of Consecration"
The members of the Mormon faith believe that when Christ comes we will live for 1000 years under this law. It is essentially communisim, without Christ at the head. Everyone will give their mormon leader (bishops) all of their earnings and that leader will in turn give to you only what you need. Quite fitting that a man like Romney, who has made millions off of the loop holes of the capitalist system believes in a religion that wants to bring the world into religious communisim.
Dem, you're a bit confused. Long ago, a group of Mormons tried that "communal living" approach, and it didn't work out, leading their prophet to proclaim that they weren't ready for it. It has nothing to do with the "return of Christ", and of course Mormons believe that when Christ returns, Christ will rule - in the Mormon way, of course. Also, Communism has never had "Christ at the head", that statement was really confused. By the way, several other Christian religious groups have also tried the communal approach, some predating Mormonism by millenia, none have lasted very long.
Mormonism has been officially pro-capitalist from it's founding, even that short-lived commune ran businesses, and has been anti-communist ever since Karl Marx published his "Communist Manifesto".
Mormonism lost me at eternal progression. Not a hundred percent sure, but I think that kind of pride is what got satan and his band of evil angels kicked out of heaven.
I am waiting for the evangelicals to realize that, if Romney were to win in November, he'd probably take his subsequent oath of office with his hand on the Book of Mormon, ha ha. That ought to put a few knickers in a twist.
Cm.......,
The church does, however, mandate tithing of 10% of their earnings to be allowed into heaven. I've had friends receive an invoice from the church for past due tithing. Socialist maybe?
then there's this, one of my personal favorites
Everyone on earth now was a spirit in the pre-existence. When we die, our spirits are separated from our bodies and if we were good they go to “spirit paradise.” If we were bad they go to “spirit prison.” The spirit world exists as a place for spirits to go while awaiting the second coming. Just plain weird?
More?
Jesus visited America
Blacks were prohibited from holding priesthood positions until 1978, and women still are.
More than 1 world with people on it and a God for each world.
I don't care 1 way or another about Mitts religion, but to think that the President of the United States could hold such strange ideas as doctrine brings to mind the old Perry Mason line "Goes to character your Honor"
Poor reasoning. Civility is important, even in a campaign filled with rhetoric.
Also, Romney being a Mormon is poor reasoning for why he should not be President. He has given no indication of enforcing his religious beliefs (being Pro Choice and Pro Gay rights, for example), unlike Rick Perry, who blatently wishes to violate Separation of Church and State. Romney is a moderate, and he has the best chance against Obama. I still predict an Obama victory, due to Romney's disputed effectiveness as Governor and the observable improvement in the country since Obama took office.
Now the whole country knows what a "BUM ROMNEY IS " it's just to late ...the damage is done ! The people are all talking ...
Guess Perry got his marching orders from his corporate masters.
I am sure he caught hell from a certain set of "brothers " ...he is interfering with profits...... if Romney doesn't win !
Exactly what I was thinking!
Wow, listen to these comments; the liberal lemmings accusing the GOP of lockstep...the ultimate in irony!
I'm pretty convinced that Romney will be the nominee. But I'd really like to see his PAC run more anti-Gingrich ads, just to pi$$ him off and to make sure Gingrich never, ever runs for anything again.
I predicted this a week ago, right after Iowa. Orders from on high have come down, leave mitts alone, but, stay in the race to break up any protest vote that would decidedly go for Dr Paul.
It's awful hard to win when your own party is fighting you.
I do not believe that the Good Dr will win now, he can't fight them all, and Obama will win a second term....
And, Sorry Feisty, looks like I won't be voting this time around...
Egilman, 10% of New Hampshire Republicans believed he was electable, compared to 66% for Romney. Paul overall is a coward; any controversial social issue Paul faces he will just deal with by saying "Let the States handle it." The problem with this is there are some regulations, for example, that individual states do not have the funding to enforce, and that is where the federal government is necessary. Another thing is social issues. States rights sounds good and all, but allowing states to create their own religions will not only violate the Founding Fathers' beliefs against organized state religion, but will also divide the country and lead to an unstable government.
Also Egilman, I am not sure why you are refering to "Feisty" here, when she has not posted in these comments.
"The fact is, this process is about winnowing out individuals and testing whether or not they're a flawed candidate or not," he said. "And I will tell you when people can point to where you made a quick profit and kicked people out of their jobs, that is an issue that has got to be addressed."
--------------------------------------------------------
Or maybe not...oops! Whatever..
The GOP establishment has spoken (and probably a few threats thrown in for good measure).
Hmmm...Perry is a professional politician; he needs a job...somewhere.
Perry, 'Texas Cockroach' is not needed in Texas. SC can keep him for ever. He did not know how to count up to three. That is how the Texas primary education system has become under him since he slashed and burnt the budget. There is an urgency in Texas for support for primary education system and its teachers. If Perry becomes the nominee ( which is doubtful, thank God), you can imagine what he will do to US education system. Then all of US will be unable to count to THREE.
daryl Im not a rick Perry fan, but I have to tell you I have several friends who have recently taken very well paying career employment in various engineering companies in Texas. I my self have been called 20 some times in the last few months about IT positions in various Texas cities. All in the 100 to 120k range with signing bonuses. Signing bonuses are a sign that they are having a hard time finding qualified people applying. Hell a few of the companies offered me a bonus if I suggested someone that was hired.
yup, and for each of those high paying jobs, you have what? 40-50? lousy paying, no benefit jobs.
Also don't forget how he close down many school in Austin Texas that where located on the East side where it is mostly dominantly black and latinos and then told the parents if your child has history that he would not intergrate them in with surrounding schools, they would be force to go to alternative school, or their parents can put them in a private school at there own expense.
Stone6: "Perry is a professional politician; he needs a job"
Romney has shown you can make a pretty good living just trying to be a professional politician. There's a model for Perry. Then after losing a few campaigns, Perry too can make the argument down the road he's not a professional politician.
Country music singer maybe? He looks well. He can sometimes talk. He lives in Texas. If He forgets lyrics he can make 'em up as He sings or yodels along.
Just goes to show that the Republicans are more interested in what is good for the party instead of what is good for the country, and still have the nerve to tell the citizens that it is "country first". I see nothing wrong with letting people know what has happened in the candidates past that might have an effect on the way they govern, afterall, did they not say that the President's past "association's" as well as his view on other things needed to be looked into?
The republcans want it both ways, to be able to support blood thirsty corporate socialists (please, these vultures aren't capitalists) and at the same time to claim to represent the middle class. The truth is if any of these cadidates could have made the money Romney made, doing what Romney did all of them would have done so, and with pride. The fact is they are all just a bunch of talentless jerkoffs.
Speaking of what has happened in the candidate's past, we elected George Bush, who had bankrupted every company he owned. How could we be surprised when he bankrupted this country? We SHOULD pay attention to what a candidate has done in the past because they will probably do it again.
You do realize that almost no one has been successful with the first business they opened. How many times did Edison try to invent the phonograph before he was successful?
Took the words right out my mouth
It is crazy to support an candidate that supported the bush administration, rick endorsed George Bush and also ask him, and allowed him to give a speech when running for Gov. of Texas to endorse him. That in my eyes says enough.
Jolly
Comparing Romney to Edison is like comparing a bungee jumper to a skydiver. The bungee jumper needs no operating skill, has got nothing to lose and is in it for kicks. A skydiver has real skin in the game and definitely has a downside.
The leveraged buy-out deals, ala Bain, are structured so the promoter gets his money back first and fast regardless of business success or failure. No downside but all the upside. Bungee jumping, not capitalism.
Watching these guys is like watching the 3 Stooges with a couple of extras. I wonder if they realize how stupid they all really look, not only to voters, but people around the globe.
Emil
Pssst Daryl Been out of this country much?
http://blog.beliefnet.com/watchwomanonthewall/2011/09/hum%E2%98%BAr-from-german-parades-floats-and-balloons-in-carnival-parade.html
Please do not use the 3 Stooges as a example of republican/tea bag party stupidity. The republican/ tea bag party candidates makes the 3 Stooges look like the smartest men on earth.
If people get stirred up about venture/vulture capitalism, there's no telling how nasty things will get if those same people start thinking about the petrochemical complex, and that could complicate things for T-Rick back in the Lone Star State.
ot oh, the machine has issued it edict !!!! don"t bring attention to the fact that all the republicans care about is the profit margerine and screw the people !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That "profit margerine" your writing about, is that what you spread on toast ?
It's what Brando pulled out from under the floorboards in "Last Tango in Paris"...oh, wait, that was butter. Anyway, the Repukes will use it for the same purpose.
Thats one of the best posts Ive seen. I cant believe its not for profit!
I have NEVER agreed with Perry but this is one call he had right. Breaking up companies, sending jobs overseas, and taking gobs of money for yourself is NOT job creation. Perry and Gingrich should have stood their ground on this one.
The BIGGEST job losses occurred from 2000 - 2008 under Republican leadership of Dubya, the Great. Yes - Mission Accomplished. Big businesses laid off hundreds of thousands people to improve bottom line, bought struggling companies to break them apart and sell piece by piece and made MILLIONS to fatten their pockets. That is what Republicans stand for - Repubtards do not give a @!$%# for man in the street and his family. Their family values are limited to sloganeering at election times. The question is - why the population think they will do better?? Any jobs created by Repubtards in Congress 2010-2011???????
Just like Jeff Immelt did at GE? You know the guy, the President's Chairman on Economics. Stop buying the hype that it is only Republicans that do this.
"..Breaking up companies, sending jobs overseas, and taking gobs of money for yourself is NOT job creation."
No but it's what 99.9 % of the companies do in this country and all free world economies to make money for their execs and stockholders and spur growth. And growth will/should/might spur job creation.
I'd like to know where all these corporate saints are, creating jobs just for the sake of their brothers and sisters.....lol...
HAHAHAHAHAHA! Scary ass cats aren't they!!!! This is politics and they're running for the President of the United States!!! If I'm going to be President I'm not let Mitt just walk into the nomination without putting up a direct fight!!! Obama and Clinton had a tough hardnose campaign and yet he survived to handle all attacks that Mr. McCain through at him and won. If Mitt's not tested and called on the carpet about Bain Capital now it will be nothing compared to waht he'll face in the election and you all know Mitt has a glass jaw. It's up to them though.
Perry is now looking for the VP job.
If true then only GOD can help poor souls in USA. Oh! Lord please watch over us. Thank you.
If Romney does well in South Carolina, expect all the other candidates to suddenly play real nice with him, in hopes of getting the VP spot. If Romney doesn't do well in S.C., expect the attacks to increase big time in hopes of upsetting his bandwagon.
You should look at Romney's record at Bain. Overall it is remarkable. VERY FEW companies they purchased (and yes they owned them) failed. Of course if Gingrich or Perry ever has real jobs they could speak on the subject of running a business in a tough economy. Funny how they beat a dead horse with Bain. Maybe that is because they cannot find anything else to sling at Mitt.
Gingrich had how many ethics violations??????
Desertbrains...your post cannot be verified because neither Romney nor Bain will release their records. It is a simple fact that Romney made money by killing middle class jobs here and reserecting them over seas. If he says otherwise, he's a liar...after all, look at what he believes as a moron, ooops, I meant Mormon.
Watch "When Romney Came to Town"
Im not a huge Romney supporter, but I do live in Detroit and have for the past 10 years watched Democrat after democrat go to federal prison for doing things that ARE against the law. We can all watch the federal trial of the entire former Democratic administration go on trial and likely to federal prison. In the mean time the city will be bankrupt by April unless Mr Obama bails them out. Which will start a run of cities requesting bail outs. I have noticed that you have difficulty in responding to anyone with out a slur or derogatory name flying out of your mouth. Have a great day!
good post, DesertKing! where are all the corporate saints creating jobs just to help their fellow brethren?? answer: they don't exist. capitalism is all about creating value and growth not about saving jobs! get real! maybe just maybe that value and growth will produce jobs. but to blame someone for playing the same game as everybody else in a free-market economy is really naive... Blingrich and Perry have never had real jobs, you're right. I think Perry is too stupid to understand capitalism but Blingrich is betting voters are too stupid to understand it!!!
This is the saqd story of the rick Perry campaign-they can't make a charge and make it stick. and when they tell the truth like they did-they are so usused to the idea of telling the truth it bite them in the butt.
Perry si proving to be another Goerge bush like fighter jock with lots of swagger and no hat. He is saved that there's no picute of him in filgt suit with his crach hanging out like Bush did on the aircart carrier proclaim ing MISSION ACCOMPLISHED when it wasn't..
If you make a charge stick to it-or no one is going to believe a word you say. Perry has yet to leanthat. Reptition make the heart grow fonder.
Perry is an uncertqain trumpet at best.
I think he flew refueling tankers, didn't he? Close...but no cigar.
why should perry back off, its the only thing he's right about.
Hard working citizens need a "Vulture" in the White House firing expensive and job killing bureacrats producing over 100,000 pages of new regulations per year.
Leave the legislating to Congress.
Oh, yes, fire Government employees! That'll change the unemployment figures - for the worse. Do you really want them competing with you for jobs?
Congress is responsible for creating all the regulatory agencies and giving them the authority for their regulation, thus Congress is responsible for all those regulations. If you've got a problem with it, take it up with your legislators, don't blame those who were hired to carry out the laws and regulate. .
The damage has already been done to Mittens and Newt is going nuclear. The reason all the Bain accusations are so dangerous to Romney is because they are TRUE. When Gingrich finished his "When Romney Came to Town" carpet bombing, Flipper will be unelectable. Mittens will rue the day he smeared Gingrich in Iowa.
exactly
The thing about a businessman(raider corp) is that youknow he doesn't give a damn about the working man and his family, only that can he make a profit.
Right on brother. Amen. Enough said.
Let us all sane folks vote to get rid of Repubtards and Teabaggers, to atone for the mistakes we made in 2010.
Darn it to he11. And I though we would have a good fight on our hands. But they were all called on the carpet for going against the 11th asinine commandment. Marching in lockstep like the Nazis did. No difference actually between these half-baked Republicans and their World War II era compatriots.
Takes avulture to know a vulture I guess. Hard for the kettle to call the pot black. But social security is a ponzi scheme, or is it. I haven't heard him say anything about that any more. I guess their in agreement on that at least. perry was just too dumb to keep it his hidden agenda like romney and bush. If romney is President, God forbid, he'll just start a war with Iran or any where else. Then he'll say we can't afford social security and medicare not with all these terrorist and the axis of evil threatening our national security and the like. Just republicans at their best is all.
The texass governor must have gotten an email overnight from the repugnicrite police.
It was fun to see for a day anyways.
In order to stop the vulture attacks, I guess the republican candidates had to "sign a pledge".
Republicans could have waited with their defense regarding Romney until investigators determine if he didn't cause net job losses by looting and bankrupting companies. One thing is sure, he is lying about the number of jobs he created. There is no such documentation.
Romney lied about McCain in 2008, has lied about his opponents in 2012, constantly lies about Obama, and lies about his Massachusetts governorship positions and activities. Some have suggested that he might be a liar.
Just as with Nixon, the election won't stop the lack of integrity.
If these republicans get into office again Mexico or maybe Brazil would even be a safer place to live than anywhere in the US. Because the next world war will be heading to a town near you. These cartels will look like the girl scouts compared to the nukes that will be coming at us. Maybe first class mail? Because no doubt our borders will become weaker and homeland security will just be too big a tax burden for the rich. They sure aren't going to raise taxes on the rich corporations/ people. Just ask grover. He'll send in the super pacs, and you don't want the super pacs, believe you me.
Translation: Shutup or we'll stop giving you money.
If the Tea Party folks want their country back, they will have to outbid Wall Street.
Hint: The "Tea-party" was created by Wall Streeters. The Teapublicans are hardly likely to bid against their puppet masters.
Was the "Tea-party" created by nefarious power of the Koch brothers ?
The Koch brothers was the money source at the foundation of the teabaggers.
Their strategic error was allowing Sarah The Stupid to 'speak' for them, an act that turned off a huge percentage of America.
Even Sarah's purchase of her new set of boobs wasn't enough to overcome. And when a new, firm, jigglie set won't rally republibaggers you know you've got a problem. Even adding her cutesy wink and hair toss didn't help. They had to retire her back to her front pourch, keeping an eye on the Russians for us.
