On the heels of the slimmest Iowa caucus victory in history, Mitt Romney’s 16-point win in last night's New Hampshire Republican primary was the second-largest margin of victory for a non-incumbent in more than 30 years. In 1980, Ronald Reagan beat George H.W. Bush by nearly 27 points. Back then, Reagan captured just less than 50% of the vote compared with Bush’s 22.7%.
And in 2000, John McCain bested George W. Bush by more than 18 percentage points.
Romney’s win last night also was better than average. Since 1972, non-incumbent New Hampshire victors have won by an average of about 12 percentage points. But the high margin of victory could be due to an usually high diffusion of the remaining vote between the other candidates. Non-incumbent winners received, on average, slightly under 40 percent of the total vote, nearly identical to Romney’s share Tuesday night.
*** Note *** A earlier version of this story noted that Romney's win was the largest margin since Reagan. As it turns out, McCain got an 18-point win in New Hampshire in 2000. So Romney's is the second largest.

So, the 'crown' has been polished and is waiting to be placed on top of the vulture capitalists impeccably groomed over inflated head!
Got it... lol
PS: Still waiting for someone to explain to me WHY after 5 years of campaigning Willard still is only at 39%.
The American people are well aware this win was bought ...not earned ..that's why it will hold little or no real relevance ...You are witnessing the buying of a country ..This will not give the people jobs or be better for the people ...This is about the wealthy buying our country for their own profits ...Once the Romney generals are in place ..look out ...it will be Bain Capital all over again.. but on a massive scale !
America be ready to grab your ankles once again .. you have no idea what this religious cult member has the in mind for America !..This is about his profit not the people !
Feisty,
It is the "surge" thing...
Or riding the wave ...
I like your image of the polished crown , but I think his hair will get messed up in SC even though it will be covered by his crown.
Willard too closely resembles the Burger 'King' for my tastes! ☺
Plastic hair & all...
LOL.....Mr. Obama has been campaigning since the 2004 Democratic Convention and he still doesn't have a clue.

Is it just me, or does Mittens always have a weird smirk on his face when he is being interviewed. He seems to be telling the journalist not to ask any questions that would have potentially embarrassing answers.

I love this kind of "pious baloney" nonsense from FR lefty liberals who worship the first Presidential candidate in history to NOT use public funding of his 2008 campaign because of the spending limits it would impose on him. (After initailly promising he would use public funding. Gee, would that be a "lie" or a "flip-flop??) And who will also be the first Presidential candidate to run a $1,000,000,000+ campaign in 2012.
Since the "crown" is currently sitting on King Obama's head; who has destroyed our economy and credit rating, spending over $1 Trillion more per year than Bush, going into debt by more in three years than any other president's full term, defined his presidency by crony capitalism and lobbyists, shoving Obamacare down our throats by procedural posturing rather than votes, trampling on the Constitution by ignoring congress to place posts.
I'd say it's time to knock this "crown" off Obama's head to remind him he's not a dictator. Go Romney 2012
Good question. Maybe it's because the GOP rank and file don't like hold the nose while they vote.
The three states that determine our Presidential nominees are best described as "two hiccups and a fart!" I bet campaign advertising is 50% of their GDP.
MMM...Pious Baloney!!!

The point is that you are a racist troglodyte, your avatar proves it.
Romney's general election rout will be just as Reaganesque as the new Hampshire victory!
Americans don't like being trashed by anyone particularly someone they elect as President.
Hard work and success are valuable traits. What America doesn't appreciate is resentment of success. Time is almost up for the Welfare President.
....and your post just proved that you're a moron with bad eyesight.....what's your point?
I see well enough to see your avatar of Obama in white face, you inbred troglodyte retard.
My point is you display racist images and are proud of it. That makes you scum. Clear enough?
Michael,
I hope you stick around here. I enjoy seeing you get all these libbies in a twist!
Nisl,
Racism is a serious issue and lefties going to the race card far too often doesn't help advance the issue. Have you ever heard of the boy that cried wolf.
The face is that of the joker which obama is. It's as simple as that. It's you with the corrupt mind that has the real problem.
Thanks for trying Bev "Resist We Much", but she won't "come out" when I'm in the sandbox....kinda makes me sad :(

LOL, FIRST READ should draw pictures for people like you, NastyRed-Neck.
There are currently six (6) people running for the Republican nomination. That's why Romney took "only" 39% of the vote. You forgot about the part of the article that says "..........On the heels of the slimmest Iowa caucus victory in history, Mitt Romney’s 16-point win in last night's New Hampshire Republican primary was the second-largest margin of victory for a non-incumbent in more than 30 years..........."
Oh, and by the way, 39% is 7% MORE than what he got in 2008.
When the field norrows down, as the primaries come and go, Romney's numbers, and margins of victory will go up.
That same thing happens in every primary cycle for both parties. The vote is split early on. Then the numbers are less spread around as candidates drop out of the race, and the field thins out.
Go hump someone elses leg Stanley - I'm not interested in YOU or your 'rant' of the day!
Don't make me smack your nose with a newspaper!

Dude...the GOP will spend well more in their Primary than was spent with Obama - Clinton.
What is your evidence that the President bought the election? Bought who, what? The Super PACs weren't around. You have money not funelled through the candidates that are having more of an impact than the money that is.
Better to at least have selective memory than no brain at all. Get real.
So do we interpret this to mean that Romney is a stellar candidate? Or that the rest of the field is that bad?

Uhhh...that's the point brilliant. You are able to attribute a dollar amount to the President. There has been more money spent by non-candidate entities on their behalf. So no, the 08 cycle will probably not be broken, because they candidates won't have to spend like that. Duh!?!?
If we were smart as a nation, we would switch Congress over to a commission pay. You get so much pay for so much accomplished. Might encourage them to show up more, do you think Northstar?

Torpedo.....one might say 'birds of a feather' but then I'd be insulting the birds.
I am grinning from ear to ear today, because, even though Romney won the NH primary, it's pretty clear to me he is one of the weakest candidates a Democrat has ever had to run against.
Just listening to him talk about class and envy, reminds me how George W. Bush, who came from much greater wealth than Romney, was able to convince people he'd fit in at their family barbeques. Bush came across as a man who'd actually worked for a living (even if he hadn't.) Romney acts like anyone who doesn't earn a living leveraging buyouts is a peasant.
How well I remember Al Gore coming to Maine after our ice storm and it felt like a visit from a foreign prince (and I'm a Democrat!) Let's just say, Romney is about as comfortable with "the people" as Al Gore was.
I remember the first time I ever saw Romney speak. It was during one of the first Republican debates during the 2008 election.
First impressions are important, and my first impression of Romney was that he was a robotic phony. I'm hardly alone in that analysis either.
Now that Romney has the nomination locked up I'm comfortable admitting that the only candidate the Republicans put forward this time around that had me worried was Jon Huntsman.
Obama has had some incredible luck throughout his career in who he has to go up against in general elections. His primary fights were tough, but in general elections he gets people like Crazy Alan Keyes and the older, less cool version of John McCain.
nisl,
One of the reason's (of many, I am sure) that he chose Huntsman as ambassador to China was to try and neutralize a run from Huntsman. I think even back then he knew Huntsman could be a difficult candidate to beat.
And I still say it is sad that only 2 small states decide who the nominee of a party is.
You can count on Amy to use the moonbat talking point of the day. So Romney is 'stiff' and rigid and boring, like Al Gore.(Nice made up story about Al Gore)
If Chris Christie was the GOP nominee, Amy would be whining about how loose and off-the-cuff Christie was, with his working class New Jersey accent and his lack of formality.
Amy would say he wasnt dignified enough....yet Romney is too dignified.
Let's face it Amy, you are a partisan hack. Though quite a bit nicer than the lead moonbat, feisty.
Is your argument bobby, that you are NOT a partisan hack? That would be dishonest, don't you think?

Gingrich: "I knew Ronald Reagan and Mitt Romney is no Ronald Reagan!"
Since calling Romney a "Massachusetts Moderate" worked so well in New Hampshire does Gingrich finally call Romney the L-word?
Statistical drivel. The largest Republican margin of victory for a non-incumbent since 1980? Thirty-two years! Wow, sounds impressive... until you break it down:
Since then, we've had 8 presidential cycles. The Republican candidate was running as an incumbent in three of those cycles (Reagan 84, Bush 92, Bush 04).
So, in effect, it is the statistically insignificant sample of... 5. The biggest of 5. Really, this is news?
Go ask Willard if the margin of victory is big news. I bet he'd say it is...I bet he talks about it at some point during the next 10 days and even invokes St. Reagan in his stump speeches.
Fair point, and he already has. His celebration dance last night included reference to a shining light on a hill, or something like that - clearly channeling his inner Ronald.
Just wondering, was Romney a "Reagan Man" in the 1980's? I must admit he confuses me on who and what he was/is for.
Paul---are you referring to the victory address Mitt delivered using a .....wait for it.....teleprompter?! What is wrong with the man that hs has to use a teleprompter---doesn't he know that is a sin?

Just wondering, was Romney a "Reagan Man" in the 1980's? I must admit he confuses me on who and what he was/is for.
Say no more, phine Reagan is a myth
"The Ronald Reagan Myth"
The Progressive Review
"We were told four years ago that 17 million people went to bed hungry every night. Well, that was probably true. They were all on a diet."
Ronald Reagan, TV speech, October 27, 1964
"Poor dear, there's nothing between his ears."
British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher
"An amiable dunce"
Clark Clifford (former Defense Secretary)
The national debt tripled under Reagan
"During Mr. Reagan's trip to Europe...members of the traveling press corps watched him doze off so many times--during speeches by French President Francois Mitterrand and Italian President Alessandro Pertini, as well as during a one-on-one audience with the Pope--that they privately christened the trip 'The Big Sleep.'"
Mark Hertsgaard, On Bended Knee: The Press and the Reagan Presidency
http://www.thirdworldtraveler.com/Ronald_Reagan/Ronald_Reagan_Myth.html
============================================
No wonder the debt tripled since the mythical Regan was dozing off.
Liberals want to talk about the republican primaries while Conservatives want to talk about the President...I wonder why?
Could it be because it is less painful for both to look outward?
dangerfield,
I am noticing this too. Suppose there are songs for this? LOL
Steeler's Wheel comes to mind...at least for this guy...;-)
dangerfield, exactly right. One thing I've noticed in the years I've been watching is that candidates for both parties seem increasingly silly. I don't know if this is because of more media exposure, or because truly serious people want nothing to do with politics anymore, or what.
So, in effect, elections are a contest to see which side can raise the negatives of the other further before election day. We saw this most notably in '04, when no one, and I mean no one, was talking about the merits of either presidential candidate. Kerry's big line was he wasn't Bush, and Bush's that he wasn't Kerry.
And it's playing out big time this cycle, and promises to carry over into the general election. "Anyone but Obama" from one side. Romney, really? will be the cry from the other.
It's all oriented toward getting people to vote against someone. Can't get them to vote for someone (last cycle was an exception). So how to get them to pull the level against.
Gentlemen,
Here is what brought me to a reality check on these threads. My 11 year old granddaughter came by to visit. I hadn't logged out and she pulled these posts up. The conversation between us was enlightening - especially to me (Grandma). I am now looking at this whole thing in a different light.
One thing I've noticed in the years I've been watching is that candidates for both parties seem increasingly silly.
I don't think President Obama is silly. He had to make the decision to execute Osama bin Laden and risk a catastrophe in Pakistan, and that's not silly. He had to hold the line against cutting spending too fast and jeopardizing the economic recovery, when the rightwing noise machine accused him of favoring big government, and that's not silly. I think the birther movement was silly, and I think books painting Michelle as having a problem with Rahm are silly, but I don't think the Obama administration has been silly.
Phine-
. " I am now looking at this whole thing in a different light."
How so?...
dangerfield,
First, just the extremism of both sides and language used. Realizing all the shades of gray in policy issues. Wanting to know I can argue a point with name calling. Looking harder at all sides of an issue.
And selfishly, wanting my granddaughter to be proud of me for being open minded and thinking things out before deciding on an issue or candidate. Children can really shame an adult - and she did just that to me (and a few others that post on here, but I can only work on me!)
This blog isn't exactly "Shields and Brooks"...lol
The old line that you can disagree without being disagreeable is the antithesis of the political blog where the most overheated rhetoric possible is used by both sides because they are not interested in the give and take of rational debate but the self-gratification of singing to the choir of their own beliefs. Both sides harden their positions and rhetoric as they respond to the other side's attacks.
So instead of "debate" based on issues, there are shouting matches based on personalities. It isn't "your position, contention, opinion, etc, is faulty, or ill-considered; It's YOU PERSONALLY (and everything you hold to be true) are wrong or worse. So the most basic political differences instantly devolve into insult-fests, pissing contests or 10 on 1 gang tackles.
Your experience with your Granddaughter reminds me of (yet another!) tune, from "South Pacific" about bigotry and the innocence of children
-------------------------------------------------
You've got to be taught
To hate and fear,
You've got to be taught
From year to year,
It's got to be drummed
In your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught.
You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade,
You've got to be carefully taught.
You've got to be taught before it's too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You've got to be carefully taught!

Let's hope she inherits a better blog environment and more important, a better world...
dangerfield,
A little off topic, you just made me smile. I just watched South Pacific with my granddaughter over the holidays. It was the first time she had seen it and loved it!

Good discussion.
Mark-
And I'm pretty sure Phine meant "withOUT name calling..."
Oops, I did mean without. Sorry, my bad.
Yes that was how I read it (without). Oops. I'm making her look bad.
phine -- what did she think of all the name calling and insults that are thrown around so easily here and avatars that are simply offensive like redhead's?
Apparently,
Mr. Kristol is still not convinced;
Mitt Romney’s claim throughout his campaign that his private sector experience almost uniquely qualifies him to be president is also silly. Does he really think that having done well in private equity, venture capital, and business consulting—or even in the private sector more broadly—is a self-evident qualification for public office?
http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/special-editorial-bain-main_616568.html
Uh Bill, that's sort of the candidate's THEME?
dangerfield,
Ouch! That must not please the folks at Romney headquarters!
Dangerfield ,
Interesting comment.
Seeing that it is primary season I think the silence from the GOP is telling.
I will have plenty of time to look outward during the general election and the reelection of our President.
Let's see: Reagan got 50% and most thought he was ill-qualified and while they weren't thrilled with Carter, it wasn't the end of the world. McCain wins in 2000, but not the nomination. Romney campaigns for 4 years, has all the financial advantages, and still only 39%. And this is impressive how? LBJ got a higher percentage in the '68 primary and he had sense enough to quit.
It's more than obvious that the Republican Party is owned and operated by by the majority of the wealthy, for the wealthy. With Romney, the power will be moved fro the White House to the penthouse. Of course, the middle class will pay all the bills when corporate taxes are lowered so that Wall Street gets refunds instead of paying and the financial wizards that gave us the Great recession will pay no capital gains taxes - the only taxes they now pay. If the middle class can't keep up, they will wring food, shelter, clothing, transportation, and health care dollars out of the poor, many of whom keep trickling down from the middle class.
In spite of Eisenhower's warning, wealth and war are keystones of the Party he once led.
Santorum won Iowa NOT Romney. New Hampshire you should recount your votes too.
Romney is the same book as P.Obama with a different cover.
P.Obama gets his policies from the Romney camp.
Vote for Romney or P.Obama if you want to be a slave in the New World Order.
In the New World Order we the people will lose all of our rights of freedom as citizens and become subjects.(SLAVES)
The "New World Order" was extolled by a wealthy president, George H.W. Bush. It has to do with the economic order and investment wealth. Obama is much more rudimentary. He has stressed trade for prosperity and diplomacy and the rule of law for international society and politics. Profits are one thing, peace and prosperity are another. Voters will decide if we are a capitalist state with limits to freedom or a democracy, with limits to empire building and exploitation backed by military force. The Roman Empire failed because it was an empire, not a democracy.
So...according to exit polls, people voted for the person they thought had the best chance of beeting our current president...not that he had the best policy positions. Sorry, but us Dems tried it that way in 2004, and look what happened.
If Mitt wins the GOP marbles contest, it will be interesting to see how he handles the big dollar pressure attacks that will come his way.
With a big, brittle smile on his face, like he always does.
Job1 - if romney gets the nod, do you really think that he can't effectively respond to anything obama and company puts out? All these attacks to any republican hopefull from another is just practice for the likely scenario obama and company will throw at the eventual nominee. Obama must be pizzed at the nominees stealing what he thought would be his <obamas> thunder and lightning.
american--Romney has not "effectively" responded to any of the questions asked of him! Nor has he given anything of substance--it is all President Obama bashing.
