Democracy at Dixville Notch: Early NH voting puts Romney on top

It was not a random sample and it will have no predictive value, but a quaint New Hampshire tradition – dating back to 1960 -- was preserved Tuesday just after midnight when voters in two tiny mountain towns, Dixville Notch and Hart’s Location, were the first ones to cast their ballots in the first-in-the-nation New Hampshire primary.

The winners in midnight democracy in Dixville Notch: Jon Huntsman and Mitt Romney, with two votes each; the winner in Harts Location: Romney, with 5 votes. Ron Paul came in close second with 4 votes, followed by Huntsman with 2, according to the Union Leader.

Another 250,000 or so voters are expected to join those early birds by casting their ballots later Tuesday. Polls in the Granite State close at 8pm ET.

In 2008, John McCain won the balloting in Dixville Notch with 4 votes. Mitt Romney finished second with only 2. McCain also won Hart’s Location in 2008, edging Mike Huckabee, 6 votes to 5.

Dr Paul is a heck of a lot closer to Mitts than the voter polling indicates! Not a very big sample but it's cool anyway. Not looking good for Huntsman...../snark

"In July 1966, Willard Mitt Romney left for 30 months in France as a Mormon missionary. He arrived with grand ideas about how to change and promote the French Mission; and like most individual Mormon missionaries, he did not gain converts. He became demoralized, and later recalled it as the only time when "most of what I was trying to do was rejected."

Well, Mr Romney, come this November, it'll be deja vu all over again.

There were 9 eligible voters in Dixville Notch...I watched the vote count and was amazed.

2 voted for Romney; 2 voted for Huntsman; 1 each voted for Gingrich and Paul then 3 votes for President Obama....

There is no need to be offensive by adding the gratuitous "m" in the middle of the last word.

After all, there's nothing unConstitutional about discriminating against "morons" when it comes to voting for public office, although given the results of the last 12 years, you'd think there was.

This is waste of time IMO and what is so wrong with the political climate of our country! Since the "economy" seems to be the political flavor of the day, I will remind everyone that there is no President capable of running an economy as large and complex as ours. Although a politcal decision they make could affect it, positively or negatively, they in general have ZERO CONTROL over how it operates!

If someone wants to vie for Presidential candidate, according to the US Constitution the only requirements is they be a born US citizen and age of 35---that's it! The crap that eminates from this limited pool of poltiical extemists (both sides) who then spends most of their time prostituting for campaign donations to keep their crappy job while purposefully DIVIDING our country rather than working on ways to improve it COLLECTIVELY is downright disgusting!

I'm an AMERICAN CITIZEN who wants the Federal government, especially a US President and Congress, to stop interfering in our lives and get back to focusing on the FEDERAL ISSUES that the Sovereign States (collectively known as the "Union") have agreed to and is clearly spelled out in the US Constitution! And I want the Sovereign States to get back to their job of governing their residents as they're in a better position to know what government services they need or don't need! Sadly, Amerians no longer know or friggen understand the type of government they really have! BIG sigh.

FYI---we are NOT a democracy which is a government established by different groups of like minded people (think Dems, Reps, Libertarians, etc.) who prop up their political puppets and take advantage of the poor and uneducated to do their bidding! [Read up on Socrates] Our founding fathers despised such a government which is why they opted for a "FEDERAL REPUBLIC" which is a power sharing system to ensure no one person (a King) or a collection of persons (political parties) could overthrow the People or Country. The adoption of the US Constitution was how they levelled the playing the field to ensure: 1) The States retained their Sovereign rights to govern the People within their territory without interference; 2) The poor, uneducated or underepresented couldn't be subrograted, enslaved or forced to engage in the whims of others; and 3) The Federal government was to ensure the States didn't override the Constitutional rights of People and provide limited services to the States (1 armed force instead of 50; 1 centeral post office system instead of 50, etc.) that was ratified through the original or a formal amendment with 3/4 of the States and 2/3 of Congress agreeing to it.

We essentially have a tri-lateral system of protections that begins with the People, operated through the States, and mediated by the Federal when the States and/or People have an issue with each other. However the PEOPLE were given the ultimate Power and Responsibility of ensuring our Constitution and laws are NOT thwarted by another citizen, company, State or Federal Gov. which is where the Second Amendment comes in---it is every " citizens Civic Duty to do this!

The President is nothing but a glorified administrator. The Constitution purposefully gave this position the least amount of responsibilitiesbased on previous historical models. The founding fathers knew the danger of giving too much power to one individual (think King, Despot, etc.) , which is why Congress was given the broadest as it's far more difficult to get a collection of 400 different minded individuals with limited powers to overthrow the US Constitution/People than it would be for one individual with unlimited powers. The only responsibility the federal government has over our economy is cited in Article IV. The States have for most part of America's history been responsible for overseeing its own economy for the benefit of its citizens.

I want our federal government to STAY OUT OF issues outside of what is mandated in the US Constitution, period. It's high time the States get back to governing these matters where re-imposing stricter Charters (pre-civl war) and STRIPPING the Charter's of companies who act badly to protect the public would go a heck of lot further than the crap they get away with now and the People continually suffer for it! Households generate the income in this country, and when governments and/or companies start hoarding too many of the profits/income produced by the households it threatens the economic stability of this country as a whole! You can't buy your way out of debt! Until our jobs stop being offshored, households retain a larger share in the profits they're labor creates, wall streets stops acting like an unregulated casino, and our governments (Federal & State) stop pandering to corporate criminals (including the Federal Reserve Board), we will never have a stable econimic foundation again!

I'm sick and tired of all the "political whoring" that goes on this country! The People are not taking the time to EDUCATE THEMSELVES on complex issues (like their own government) and simply go lockstep with whatever their little poltiical mouthpieces tell them to believe! Do you honestly believe a President is capable of running our economy? HELL NO, and for any of them to say they can "create jobs" is nothing but a good dose of SNAKE OIL because they simply don't have the POWER, CONTROL or ABILITY to do so other than add more layers of unending laws that takes years to implement and won't know the final results until years later because the People have shown they simply do not have the capacity to regulate themselves, companies or their own government for a very very very long time....LAUGHABLE!!!

So, Romney did not better his 2008 showing in Dixville Notch.

This is irrelevant. If the same group of candidates were running this year as in 2008, this statement would be relevant. Problem is, they aren't. Its a whole different group of candidates and I think the field is much better and much tougher this year than in 2008.

    Huntsman doesn't stand a chance.

Romney is going to win. The shame of it all is three or four states decide on who the presidential candidates are most of the time. This isn't right. Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Florida should not have that much power in determining the next president. The system is broken and that is how we wound up with the incompetent president we now have in office.
I propose having a maximum of ten debates, then ALL the states have their primary elections on the same day. That way all states have equal input in determining the candidates. The current system is idiotic. What if we had the presidential election the same way as the primary? It would be a total joke.

I look at it this way

    Obama...more of the same...corporate puppet....NO!!!!

Romney....corporate hands are locked in his pockets, same as Obama...NO!!!

    Perry...well enough said....OMG NO!!!!

Santorum....religious nutjob hell bent on a Christian jihadist war! Hell NO!!!!

Gingrich....evil man, corporate lobbysist, will ruin this country for personal benefits....NO

Huntman....was ok, but then he changed, he has some hidden agenda (i feel) No!!!!

Ron Paul....well, he wants liberty, he wants to cut foreign spending, he does NOT want to continue baseless wars, he wants to focus on fixing America and its core values, which we have drifted. He wants to support our National Defense, but not in the false ways the current and past establishment has done.

Basically ALL the other candidates, (while some have some (very few) good points), they are still ALL a corporate puppet, and will eventually still be EXACTLY the same, with the exception of Ron Paul, who cannot be bought, and this is why they fear Ron Paul. Like Ron said in response to the others calling him dangerous....Ron said "I am dangerous...to their empire".

The fact is that by the process of elimination, based on who is bad for this country....leaves only one person....Ron Paul for president in 2012.

On the flip side...if you are searching for someone who is trying to do something positive for this country and its people, and who actually has positive views, which are also morally and ethically great America AND the world.....again it leaves only one man standing....and that man is Ron Paul.

If the media covered everyone fairly and equally, Ron would leading in EVERY poll, however many people who do not have access to other media...all they hear is Ron is bad...quacky...not mainstream. Soon will be the day that the media will lose all its credibility, and they will have to return to honest journalism, instead of the bullsh*t they are advertising.

Anyway.....Really want change.....see the candidates for who they are!!! See them for who they represent? Do you want someone who defends Corporate America...or someone who defends the People of America?

    SpryLynnx, wow, what a rant.

Now a question for you. If you want the economy driven by the states, how do you propose to keep the US as a country of 50 states? Eventually each economy will be driven separate from the rest, which in turn will result in more purchasing power in one state and less in another. This in turn will lead to the eventual destruction of the US as we know it and we'll in all likelyhood have another Civil war on our hands. Not over slavery this time but over economics. Would you rather our country be broken up like Communist Russia was back in the late 1980's early 1990's?

You may be right concerning your take on the Constitution, but in order to have a sound fiscally responsible economy, each state MUST work together within the Union. Otherwise, you have economic chaos within the country. It would be similar to what the Euro countries are going through now except that it would be within one country. Are you suggesting we expel those states who are currently unable to balance their books?

By the way, I've heard that Ron Paul has accused the Fed of manipulating the ups and downs of our economy since it was founded approximately 100 years ago. It that is true, then was was the manipulation before it was founded? We've gone through recessions and depressions even before the founding of the Fed.

As far as Obama...he does not run the country...he runs a continuous campaign. He is bad for this country and he will be a one term President his empty rhetoric is not going to play in America and his campaign will be similar to a rerun of a "B" rated movie.

The Bigot part is what makes him totally unelectable, even the Republicans know that.

The level of fanaticism his 'supporters' have is very indicative that he is more of a cult than a candidate.

And don't try to tell me he is not a bigot, anyone who goes around calling gay people "queers' is a bigot. Plain and simple.

Also to have a newsletter that goes out under your name and then claim YOU HAVE NOT EVEN READ it for years and years later, is ludicrous. Nobody buys that Pauley!

"Conservatives and libertarians should fight back and challenge the myth that collectivist liberals care more about racism. Modern liberalism, however, well-intentioned, is a byproduct of the same collectivist thinking that characterizes racism. The continued insistence on group thinking only inflames racial tensions.

I hear the dozen or so people in those first tiny mountain towns hold a drawing to see who would cast the first vote. I don't know why this is even important, but it is tradition every 4 years.

If anyone is running for President who professes to have the knowledge of the law of the land and promotes it, who swears to follow the Constitution which protects and upholds citizens rights, and has the proven character to affirm those practices as displayed in their consistent actions in line with law, those are Presidential qualities and that person should be strongly considered for the role. In every election in this country we should be inundated with candidates that have those qualities. I only see one. Ron Paul.

Electibility has a lot to do with who won't vote for you than those who vote for you. Calling this field unelectable is simply pushing an opinon, not a reality.

43% of the voters find Paul as unaccptable - That means he could win, but he would have to work hard for it.

54% find Perry unacceptable - i.e. if he cannot change this quickly, he should quit.

                      44% see Gingrich as unacceptable

25% See Santorum as unacceptable. This is a definitely electable number

                      16% See Romney as unacceptable.

The next thing to know is how much people like you. Paul has a strong loyal base, Romney has his supporters, Newt has his supports, Perry, Huntsman and Santorum are unknown quanties and that is what we are going to see in the next couple of weeks.

I am amazed and saddened at how Obama gets blamed for anything and everything.

As for coal mining ,since the companies decided it is more profitable to blow mountain tops away they actually employ thousands less miners.

Who left this country in a feaking freefall your man Bush.

Is it not the elephants who are also saying we are losing are freedom, howcome the religous extreme have the right to say whether i use contraceptives or not.

If they win we will become a dictatorship, ruled by ignorance and greed.

Jesus was a liberal who cared about the poor ,he did not use the poor to gain power for the rich by playing on their fears .

matters -- President Obama, by virtue of being the President of the United States has the honor of being blamed for anything that happens and for receiving credit when anything happens just as it has been since George Washington. If he is incapable of accepting this honor then he should not have run for office in the first place.

Stop whining. Bush left nearly 3 years ago. The country is being led, rightly or wrongly, by Obama and he and all of his followers need to come to grips with that reality and buck up.

IMHO - The KINGS would use religion to gain power over the people. The rich just used starvation.

Today, we aren't much better. We use Science, Slander, Pure democracy, the courts, and a entitlement state to control people. It's a pretty convoluted system, but it works quite nice for moderate, liberal, and progressive politicians.

Willard Mitt Romney's pious baloney may be best understood in the windward side of Oahu, Hawaii. Circling the wagon through Power and Greed is creating strife and controversies in a small Mormon town of Laie on Windward coast. As one says, these people are ruthless; they will stab you in the back and place a rose on your coffin with a smile.

                            J. Willard Marriott and Richard Marriott each donated $500,000.00 to Willard Mitt Romney Political PAC. President Steven Wheelwright, controversial BYU-Hawaii President held a fundraising event for Mitt Romney at his BYU-Hawaii campus home in December 2011. These Wallstreet developers are pushing the Laie Marriott Hotel and ignoring flooding problems for surrounding neighbors.

Truly, although (practically) unthinkable, the only thing that is slowing the progress of further government tyranny, is the Second Amendment, which is under constant act by the government. Yes the public education is a failure in many ways. Fortunately, I was privately educated. Therefore, I know the true meaning of the Constitution. I do not advocate violence. However, if you ever were taught history, you should know that if you forget, or do not consider history, it is bound to repeat itself.

You deserve a refund if you truly believe that the framers of the Constitution intended to authorize armed insurrection to subvert an elected government.

Speaking of history, did they never teach you about the French and Indian War? THAT'S why the Americans needed a well-regulated militia; to DEFEND themselves from armed attack, not to destroy our freely elected, democratic form of government.

                                    Nice moniker though.

The Constitution was not written to obtain Independence from the French! You construe history for your (lame) argument. It was, of coarse, Independence from the British and the King. We suffer something similar today! Taxation without Representation! End of discussion for me.

New Hampshire is infested with Massachusetts transplants who fled Massachusetts after ruining that state with the candidates they elected. Because they still have ties with Massachusetts and the Massachusetts mentality they are going to vote for Romney for the simple reason that Romney was once governor of Massachusetts. Just like the Kennedys they now worship Romney.

Slick Willard is at it again having one of his imfamous "mitt fits"...."corporations are people too", "l like to fire people"..."I am not one of the 1%, I'm one of you" <----if he hasn't said that, he will...and the list goes on and on.

Mitt is going to have a real big fit this November. Its going to be fun to watch on election as state after state rejects Slick Willard and the teabagger fascist evangelical idiots.

I suggest that the focus is not for American citizens to drive party affiliation 'tit for tat', but to assess political positions that support peace, fiscal responsibility and where on any given day, the American citizen is the biggest and most important part of the process. Oh, I thought you were talking about the Obama administration. Because, let's be honest, with the signing of the NDAA, pushing for SOPA, the re-authorization of the Patriot Act allowing roving wire taps, unconstitutional recess appointment, violations of the War Powers Act, and more...the Obama administration is the epitome of following a Constitutional framework of upholding civil liberties and fiscal responsibility, right?

Besides, who doesn't like hyperinflation? That's what the Constitution's all about! /sarcasm mode off.

Exactly. Truth is, regardless of who one's supporting now we're in some serious, serious trouble. The Democrats are going "haha. stupid tebaggers," and the Republican's are bashing Obama. It's obvious that during every election each side tries to make the appropriate parties look bad. But, this is more then just "political pandering." There's a very real possibility of multiple things happening depending on who gets elected from: (Obama) having the credit downgraded again if fiscal responsibility is not achieved leading to potentially higher interest rates hurting the lower and middle-class. Thus as a right the Fed will likely artificially keep rates lower, push for more spending, etc. In turn, this will keep devaluing the dollar leading to inflation, potentially hyper-inflation. (read Soviet Union early 1900's and early 1990's). Or, on the flip-side if Romney gets elected, he'll change the tax structure such that the lower class (making less then $20k) will see an increase as much as 60%, and the middle class a small tax cut (around 2%).

Other possibilities (real possibilities) is more civil unrest as the U.S. continues to push to have the highest disparity among rich and poor. People, do you WANT another Civil War? Do you want us to be pushed to the brink of ruin? Stop playing games and treating this like it's f'in joke and "just another election." My kids and their kids future are on the line. So, go ahead, keep up the usual status quo B.S. Don't be surprised when sh** really hits the fan.

As long as consumers consume, we are still doing business. If they start listening to those retards screaming about the debt, then we're in trouble.

IMHO - ignoring the debt might make you not panic, but if you don't recognize it as the probem it is and deal with in a postive manner, at some point creditors do turn off the faucet. Obviously , the Mormon issue is a big issue , but what about this Venture Capital Business financing. Venture Capitalists are a lot different from banks . Banks make loans based upon not getting involved in the Business . Every VC though generally is involved in management of the company given money to especially financial management of the company they place their money in . This is sometime in voting common . It is usually however in voting preferred whose interest payments may be deferred by the creditor . In essence , the VC usually remains in control in some way of financial reporting and the possible ownership of the assets of the firm . What the Republicans are not telling you is VC as an industry has been going down in recent years so that their are less and less VC . Romney is running for Pres because he was in a dying industry . One of the reasons why it is dying is because of theft of Intellectual Property which price of protection called cyber security has been going up . So, to hire security experts to stop hacking and run security tests on a system has been getting more expensive .

The fact someone used to work as p1 programmer and now has been replaced by Visual Basic C + programmers , and is unemployed does not make the former P1 programmer a good choice to run for President of the United States.

I think that voting in N.H. is ridiculous. They are expecting 250,000 voters, when Iowa only had around 110,000? I don't think it should be legal for N.H. to have citizens from other states in to vote.

Limited government expands your personal liberties while unlimited government steals them. When you take back your own freedom you will also be providing it to your neighbor. We will all have the freedom to agree and to disagree while at the same time knowing we are our only recourse, which counters division. Never cease the conversation. Ron Paul 2012

I'd pick a truthful president for a change instead of another president that will tell you what you like to hear and then never accomplish what he'll say he will do during his term. Also no offense to Obama but he takes too many vacations and the Republicans are blocking him from doing anything. Whats the point of putting a man in office who will be prevented from doing anything for another 4 years and our country will most likely suffer even more? I say its time to put Ron Paul into office have this guy completely end the war stop the 51% of americans taxes into this war and start fixing america! I can almost garantee the moment the war ends completely is when the economy is going to shoot into something positively better that is assuming by the end of 2012 our government isnt too deep in the debt. Which I wouldnt be suprised if it was already too late. I mean come on 11 years of war? Our cash is being spent by a wild teenager with a new and huge credit car that loves to spend!
