Romney addresses 'Occupy' in final New Hampshire rally

BEDFORD, NH-- Maybe it was sharing the stage with N.J. Gov. Chris Christie last night that did it, but Mitt Romney was ready to engage when Occupy protesters disrupted his rally for the second night in a row.

As chants of "Live Free or Die, Always Occupy" broke out in a familiar refrain, and police closed in, Romney did something few in the hall expected, or had seen before. He told one protester to stop shouting and ask a real question.

"How about instead of shouting, why don't you say what you think, say your view. What’s your view madam, what do you think?" Romney asked.

While the question was unclear - the protester was deep in the crowd - Romney's answer unambiguously laid the elevated role of money in presidential politics squarely at the feet of President Obama.

"The answer is, this president is spending money and has spent money, we have had over the history of this country a public funding plan for our presidents, and you know what? This president has been the first one to throw aside the public funding program to break all those barriers and to spend massively more than any president in history," Romney said. "This country is too important to hand over to President Obama for a second term."

In 2008, then candidate Obama chose to forgo matching public financing for his campaign, and ultimately spent a record $747 million dollars pursuing the White House - a controversial decision at the time. Romney had spent $17.6 million dollars this election cycle through the end of September, according to the latest filing data available.

With the crowd energized, the frontrunner Romney closed out his stump speech by urging the supporters to vote in tomorrow's primary, telling them "you're going to make a big statement tomorrow."

Of course it is millions though still by far set the record for how much a candidate had to spend to buy an election.

The point is, Obama is the biggest hypocrite on earth on this as well as many other rich-guy issues. Obama slams the current system, but instead of opting in for the public finance option, feels the need to raise a billion dollars in this current election cycle. This says a lot about him - his lack of confidence, and his lack of good character.

You either believe and support what you believe, or you spend taxpayer money on Chewbacca Halloween parties and $4 million on holiday travel while vilifying rich people.

What is truly pathetic are the loonie lefties who still support this fraud.

I love Bedford NH. Home of Sarah Silverman.

Huntsman is the only hope for Republicans. To my Republican friends in NH, (although they are few). Be sane or be gone.

Huntsman is a statesman. An ambassador. Fluent in Mandarin.

Respected in China, the next powerhouse we will need to address.

Stop this right-wing social social engineering.

Make the right choice. I love Dixville Notch! Too cool (maybe literally) a place.

Good heart! I miss NH. Peace to all in this special state.

WHAT'S UP with all the left wing right wing shyt. we're americans and i think everyone has forgotten that. everyone gets mad when someone less fortunate is given assistance or an oppurtunity. stop hatin and tryin to hold people back. it's bad enough that we got rid of slavery not that long ago in our own country yet have to sit here and listen about foodstamp president. does anybody realize the cost of living and minimum wage don't add up. the reason why foodstamps are so high is because states are not doing their jobs in the welfare office i see illegals making off like fat rabbits. so now because bush opened his back yard our system is flooded and people that live in low income housing have to fight for jobs their never gonna get because illegal pay is always cheaper. so stop cracking on obama cause that's what he means by failed system.

There is such a buzz in NH this time of year in a political election.

Cold air. Freshens the mind. Sharp wit. Clear thought.

Reflection on years past and a forward vision on our path to the future.

I miss that very much. Truly intelligent people, with a purpose and a sense of responsibility.

I'll be watching tonight as Dixville Notch casts their vote. All best to you my friends!!

Karl Rove alone plans to spend $150M on the 2012 election through 2 groups whose money comes from anonymous contributions, thanks to the legalized bribery of Citizens United. Add in vast amounts of Conservative propaganda through dozens of talk shows, an entire TV network, and a plethora of well-financed blogs providing free campaign support for the eventual GOP candidate.

Hypocrisy? Hypocrisy is pretending none of this matters and much of our political process hasn't been bought and paid for by the Conservative Movement and the wealthy elites who pay for it.

You really believe that Obama doesn't discuss things? So I guess the negotiations with Boehner over the deficit didn't happen? It was Obama that offered the largest cuts in exchange for revenue increases. It was Obama that held the health care summit with the GOP leaders. He asked for real and immediate solutions to insuring the uninsured and those denied or priced out of health insurance. All the GOP would offer was tort reform and cross border policies, neither of which provided any expanded coverage. He's discussed his policy objectives until he's blue in the face and not one GOP Senator has ever crossed the aisle, not one. So just who is unwilling here?

      Janis,

Pray tell just what is really going on?

      pj,

I think I read this story a little differently than you. Before anyone was "escorted out" Mr. Romney gave the protesters an opportunity to actually say something, pose a real question, rather than just shouting silly slogans (Live free or die??? At over $1,000,000 clean-up and repair bill in the city of Los Angeles OWS certainly has a strange view of living free). Instead of protesters seizing the opportunity for meaningful dialogue, "the question was unclear." Though the article didn't say so I imagine Mr. Romney couldn't hear a question through the din of the questioner's fellow protester's chanting. I am not a Romney fan but he definitely took the high road here, put 'em on the spot.

This is understandable, they are just following the lead of President Bush. When they didn't find any WMDs in Iraq, they started saying they invaded because Saddam was a bad man.

When President Obama is reelected, they might finally figure out we aren't buying the 'longer, and deeper' lie, either.

This is another flat-out in-your-face Republican lie to add to Romney's and Newt's and Rick's debate whoppers which went unchallenged. $747 Billion dollars is even more than the entire Defense budget. It's possibly even more than George W. Bush stole from America to give to his buddies in no-bid contracts. It's more than the entire Iraq war should have cost. And where would O'bama get $747 billion?

Just because they rhyme, doesn't make them similar or easy to mix up if you have any concept of how different they are from one another.

People on any news/talk/or entertainment show are there strictly for the raitings which allows the station to sell air time as expensively as possible. If the station is not getting a good return on their money they will not continue to run a show, now if you wing nuts really want him on this network I suggest you do what the followers of Hot in Cleveland did to TVland, bombard them with calls, letters, and commitments to their sponsors to watch the show and purchase the products. Yeah, don't mention that Obama was partying like a rockstar in 2009 while vilifying the rich, or that his administration has more former Goldman Sachs employees than any in history.

Don't talk about this President overseeing an economy that has now had more people receiving foodstamps than any President in the history of our nation.

And forget to mention that Obama has had back to back to back larger deficits than any President in history, with no end to Trillion+ deficits each an every year for the forseeable future.

Forget to mention that his Jobs Czar is the CEO of GE, the biggest corporate tax dodger in the US, and the company actively building factories in China, creating jobs for Chinese, because its cheaper to build there than here.

Yeah, the rich get richer - and statistically, more so under Obama than any President in history as well. He is a BIG friend to the rich, and a net importer of foodstamp recipients.

Mitt Romney was a '60s protester who protested protesters

It was 1966, when Romney was a 19-year-old Stanford freshman. Romney and his friends were unhappy that 15 anti-war students had occupied the reception area of the university president's office to protest new Selective Service requirements that affected students' draft deferments.

In any case, it turns out Romney wasn't exactly an opponent of deferments. He got one himself.

As a Mormon missionary, he took a "ministerial deferment" from the draft -- and served his time, not in Vietnam, but in France.

And there was another group, too........I remember, it was Code Pink! I remember them sneaking into Congressional Hearings, camping out in Texas, protesting in parks and interrupting rallies.

The Tea Party never dressed in disguise to gain entry to an event, for the sole purpose of interrupting a speaker. Most Tea Party events were paid for, with permission and permits, and were relatively orderly.

Groups of every kind are allowed to voice their opinion in this country. We all have the right to assemble. We all have the right to free speech. Doing it in manner that is not obnoxious nor disrespectful can prove to be effective as well.

Mr. Romney was right to ask the protester to speak. I wonder if the OWS folks have a coherent message. I'd like to know what it is. It seems when someone tries to respond to their ......whatever it is they're doing......they shut down and cry foul.

Where have you been, Candice? Do you NOT hear OWS on every street corner? There are many items on their agenda...from saving people's homes (thanks to the Bush deregulation of Banks) to Stopping the erosion of our Bill of Rights by the Republican dominated Supreme Court. Oh, maybe, some of us citizens don't really care about the Bill of Rights anymore, eh? Most of us do and to that end, we will be LOUD, we will be CLEAR, and we will be HEARD. We are not there to debate, we are there because we have a RIGHT to be there and if you don't like the message? To bad, we don't like your republican policy and procedures and we are not sheep to be led to slaughter. Mitt just doesn't want anyone to know how much income tax he paid - or rather, how much he Didn't pay, lol.

      Candice;

There is not room on this thread to answer your querry wanting to know what the coherent message of OWS is, but begin with this:

There has been no real accountability for the greed and fraud of Wall Streets big banks that caused the housing collapse.

Now, this nation is founded upon the self-evident truth that ALL are created equal. If you or I or any of the OWS individuals obtained money illegally, we would be investigated, prosecuted, and incarcerated. OWS is asking that, everyone being equal, an investigation be conducted and, if applicable, prosecutions pressed on the individuals responsible for the housing meltdown and subsequent economic crisis. Because the responsible parties are part of the "1%" they are likely to eschew investigation, prosecution and incarceration unless "the people" demand otherwise - cronyism is rampant.

Hopefully this will give you a basis to begin your education of OWS and the "99

      %" positions and purpose.

Trust me, this IS just the tip of the iceberg. There is so very much more inequity, immorality, illegality and unfairness the OWS addresses.

      #20.7 - Mon Jan 9, 2012 11:01 PM EST

      Janis,

No, I don't hear OWS on every street corner anymore. When they did occupy the street corners and were asked what they wanted, barely a few offered anything coherent.

How does OWS propose people's homes be saved? The loan modification programs put together by both Bush and Obama have failed miserably. How would you save people's home, Janis?

The Supreme Court is ruling against Freedom of the Press, Assembly, Speech, the right to petition, the right to keep and bear arms, unreasonable searches, trial by jury, due process, eminent domain, cruel and unusual punishment and taken away States rights? Really? That's scary.

Certainly the OWS have the right to be heard. They have the absolute right to be loud and to be clear. But when they do so by disrupting events like the ones described today, aren't they trampling on the rights of the people who were exercising their rights to free speech and assembly?

      Shouldn't everyone's rights be respected?

It's not that I don't like the message. I simply and truly don't know what it is.

      Not as Stupid,

I totally agree those who were involved in the financial crisis should be held accountable.

The FBI is finally investigating Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in the context of criminal charges.

The SEC has filed fraud charges against the ex-CEO of Countrywide.

      That's a start.

Unfortunately, the many causes of the financial collapse are so far and wide and encompassing, a good portion of the country would be thrown in jail if they went after everyone......from the bankers to the mortgage brokers, to the real estate agents and appraisers, the teachers, the home buyers, the investment bankers, the traders and even employees of the SEC who couldn't figure out what was going on.

I am totally with you on your view of illegal activities. Unfairness, though? No one I've heard can articulate what they would consider to be "fair."

No one I've heard can articulate what they would consider to be "fair."

You mean it is sort of like SCOTUS' position on pornography; "I can't define it, but I know it when I see it."

It is not easy nor simple to verbalize.

Here is a post from another thread that may be helpful: someone asked:

What concerns me more is why insurance companies are allowed to decide who lives or die in this country. Why are they allowed to ruin peoples lives?

      My response:

      Definitive answer:

Because they are part of the "1%" OWS is protesting.

See, with the 1%, it is about power and control and being "above" someone else; the 1%ers do NOT subscribe to the self-evident truth that ALL are created equal - the self-evident truth that this nation is founded upon. Thus, the "1%ers" should face charges of sedition and treason, among others, in my opinion. Instead, they buy their way out of investigation and prosecution with dollars and influence. Truth and equity and morality and fairness do not come into play in their world.

The concept is age-old and clearly stated in the Bible as the second most important of God's commandments, "almost as important as the first..." Operative descriptive: EQUALITY. If it is done to me, it must also be done to YOU; If YOU are given an advantage or a benefit, I must also receive the identical benefit or advantage. To do otherwise promotes the "class war" so many wingnuts attempt to blame the President for (see Christie's remarks to OWS protestors, and Romney's diatribe/"message" to the President regarding his OWS interruption) when in reality it is THEY, attempting to remain "above" others who create that warfare.

Remember Leona Helmsley? One of the most notorious "1%ers" who clearly stated the 1%er attitude/lifestyle/belief. This is why we have OWS, and I will state unequivocalbly that I AM 100% IN AGREEMENT WITH THE GOALS OF THE MOVEMENT!

They are necessary to promote and achieve something that is long overdue: true equality and not simply "lip service" about freedom in America.

Every time someone drops that one I respond that taking away the loopholes which allow the very wealthy to pay a lower effective tax rate than the middle class would be a great way to start.

Why is it that all you tolerant liberals are the first ones to call people who disagree with you stupid? Why is your opinion they only one that matters? You go out of your way to insult any body from the TeaParty, but you think the OWS crowd can do no harm. Perhaps you should go to a Tea Party rally, then compare it to OWS. You will find, the park is clean, there is no nudity, drugs or police to break up the rally. I guess it all depends on what you think is ok.

We don't call the other side stupid because they disagree with us Mike, we call them stupid because it is painfully obvious that the republicans are up to no good. They are trying to implement even further, the policies which got us into this economic mess in the first place, and quite frankly, anyone who buys into their obvious negative agenda, and can't see that they are completely without any morals or integrity, IS stupid. They are fighting tooth and nail to oppress their fellow citizens and intentionally tank the economy in hopes they can blame the hurt on Obama. If not for people like you, who can't see what is right in front of their faces, they would not win a single seat.
