Subscribe to RSSSALEM, N.H. -- Rick Santorum said today if he were president and covert operations, funding revolutionaries, and stricter sanctions didn’t work in shutting down Iran’s nuclear facility, he would “take it out.”
“More needs to be done to stop Iran now,” Santorum stressed, adding, “We’re going to take it out for you” with a “tactical strike.”
He continued, “We have to take this facility out, so we don’t have” an all-out war with Iran.
Santorum’s saber rattling toward Iran is common on the campaign trail. He often says that President Obama has not done enough to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon and that more needs to be done. But his remarks today, in response to a questioner who asked what he would do to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, went a step further.
First of all, Santorum said, “Iran’s already declared war against us.”
If Iran were to acquire a nuclear weapon, he contended, events like the terrorist attacks on 9/11 would become “a routine occurrence.”

Salter???? lol..... Just a disgruntled McCain hack. Salter doesn't know what he is talking about. That is a personal opinion and maybe Santorum has the same about him.

If Salter thinks he is so damn smart, why isn't he a U.S. Senator? I think I'll go to his FB page.

Santorum is just another war monger - to the left and to the right, war is on their lips. But Obama says the same thing. So does Congress. Any presidential candidate, running or seated, who is stating they will take us into a war with Iran is out of their mind! Don't think party - think peace!

Santorum and the other Republican hawks has miscalculated. Their aggressive rhetoric on foreign policy and relentless bashing of the president's record underestimates the support Obama has on foreign policy and the complete disgust among the public with any talk of more neo-con military adventures that will hit America hard in the pocketbook and with the lives of our soldiers. This aggressive agenda is out of touch with both reality and the sentiment of most voters.

The thing is the American people do not fight wars. .01% of the population is serving. That is who fight the war.
ITM,TX I would take issue with that statement to this extent, while the American people do not actually fight they do deal with the consequences of war which can be substantial. I think it would be better to include all americans can pay the price for war in many ways. War should always be a last resort but a final result as well.

How do I know this? Hmmmmm... My nephew was sent there before New Years day. Currently the troop count is close to 2000. Just enough personnel to set up a base. They are currently sending over Patriot Missles and Foxfire missles.

Alan, it is in no ones interest to have Iran with a bomb. It is a good question though, how do we stop them. No easy answer either. Consider if we make an air strike against Iran, will they declare war, more than likely, but how do they accomplish that. They have nothing that can hit us directly so who do they reach out and touch if not us. Do they close the straight, now they have multiple arab countries against them as well as us. It is very easy to say just bomb them but what happens after that is a question to you
There will be consequences, Lebanon and Gaza come to mind. There is also the likelihood of terrorist attacks in Bahrain and other facilities in the Middle east maybe Europe and Africa. But if the result is that they don't get the bomb then it is worth it. Unfortunately it is one of those "Things could be worse but we'll never know" answers.
I don't see the logic of jumping on Santorum for this because I think the next Administration of any party will bomb Iran. If it is the Obama Administration then some of the posters here will be all for it and that is why they're hypocrites. I hope it doesn't come to that but I don't see a peaceful alternative.
Alan, most likely you are correct but should another country and people pay for our actions. Again we go to well it won't hurt me or mine. As for them not getting the bomb due to this type of action by us I do not think we can stop that only delay it further. I suppose a country closer to Iran could take direct action but it would probably take a bomb to stop a bomb and things would get worse in a hurry. I think Santorium over stepped the talk on this one without much thought or experience in this area. This could be dangerous in itself.

Which ones should we target? The truth is that in the over SIXTY years since the Manhattan Project, only one nation has been reckless enough to actually DETONATE a nuke and we don't have to worry about them.
There are far greater threats to the USA militarily, to be concerned about from nations who have possessed the bomb for decades, to worry about or threaten isolated, non-nuclear Iran is just campaign bluster for the faithful from a pandering candidate on the campaign trail...
The "threat" (to the USA) of Iran developing a nuke, is the last gasp of the dying Neo-Con school of thought. They are a danger to themselves and their neighbors, but not because of their suspected weapons program.
Oh, and the Israelis will deal with that threat if it comes to the point of confrontation, while we're still pulling out our saber to rattle...

The only country that has demonstrated proven inability to be trusted with a nuclear weapon is the United States of America. If a second nation adds itself to the list, I'll review and revise.

Not really a party issue as I think this is pretty much the Administration's position as well. I doubt this time around that President Obama will say he's willing to meet the leaders of Iran anywhere, anytime. They pretty much rebuffed his overtures.

I think the difference is (at least IMO) that Huntsman understands and knows the area AND has a vested interest. Santorum just strikes me as trying to play tough to appeal to the base. Get my drift?
Notice that someone like Santorum, with no family to put in harm's way, is really eager to prove his manhood by wanting to send other people's loved ones to war? Is it in the drinking water of the right? Or is it something Freud would have to address?
Look; when we take that oath and join the military, we know that we are putting our lives in harms way. Every soldier knows this. The military is not for everybody. If you can't get with the program, find yourself another occupation.
The problem is it is alright for ACTIVE DUTY soldiers to grind but when the Natl Guard and Reservist are called up...oooohhhhhh hell we got to MAUCH "AL Sharpton voice".
Don't play with me, itm, my husband did his time. As a Navy wife, so did I. And the military just goes where it is told, the pols in Washington are the ones who decide when and where. Since they are the ones that make that decision, they need to have more "skin" in the game. Might make them stop playing with the lives of our young people.
ITM, I am glad you served for us and you are also correct the military is not for everyone. As for the National Guard they were created for homeland protection, if they are deployed to other countries then who is here to protect the homeland. They have a function as well as the Army, Navy and Airforce, Marines too. As for reserves the name says it all, if they are active reserve then they are just that when needed, but we should not waste our military on half measures, war should be a final result and that being the total elimination of an enemy not building nations or police actions those are not the purpose of a military.

What "Sanitarium Santorum" is not understanding the "Nuclear Reaction" this would cause around the world. The Russians would go crazy and Putin would definately defend the oil interests of Iran. The reaction of the United Nations would be very negative for the United States. The only nation that would support the United States would be the British. China would also take any American First Strike as a direct threat to the oil production of Iran. In the United Nations the Chinese and the Russians would politically gang up on America on many levels. The other thing that would occur is that the Chinese, and especially the Russians would bring their Navies into the Gulf. What does America think will happen when the Navies of the US, China, and Russia enter the Gulf???? Then let us add the "Wild Card Navy." That would be the British Navy. What does America think could go wrong with this very nuclear situation?? Does Ameica think it would go down peacefully??? Which Navy would fire first to secure the oil supply of the world for itself??? The Russians would think America. The Chinese would Russia. The United States would think both Russia and China. While Curerate is off topic, I don't believe that his is a factual statement. I have a number of relatives who are quite ill and have living wills telling Drs & Hospitals what they want done (i.e., no CPR, tube feedings etc). Insurance companies only pay the bills. Unless your referring to Insurance companies denying tests or hospitalization - that's a whole different story - either you have insurance or you don't.

Most people cling to the past and the old ways of war. The whole world has changed and both Russia and China's economies are much more entwined with ours and the rest of the world. I'd suggest we discuss what would happen to their economies of the strait was closed by Iran. Can you imagine what would happen to China if they had very little gas or oil! I think the day has to come where all 3 of us have to band together to keep these rogue nations under control so their wild actions don't destroy our economies. Both Russia and China need to side with us and under no uncertain terms inform Iran to let inspectors in or all 3 go in to destroy such.
