Rand Paul does not rule out presidential bid

CONCORD, N.H. -- The heir to liberty may be ready to bear the torch.

On a solo outing as his father’s chief surrogate here Saturday, Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., left the door wide open to a presidential run in 2016 were his father, Texas Rep. Ron Paul, not to win the Republican nomination.

“First things first is that I’m here trying to help my dad,” Paul said, when asked about a possible bid. “I can’t answer any questions beyond that -- other than to say that I am interested in national debate.”

The careful remarks came during a forum held at a local restaurant Saturday morning, sponsored by the Bartlett Center for Public Policy, a conservative think tank. They seemed to mark a new step in the national political career of a second generation of the Paul family -- a widely expected development.

The elder Paul, at 76 years old, is in the midst of his third run for the GOP nomination. Rand Paul, who turned 49 on Saturday, was elected to a Senate seat in Kentucky in 2010 -- and seems poised to inherit the movement his father generated inside the libertarian corner of the Republican Party.

“I am interested in long-range goals of changing the country," Rand Paul said, "having a more limited federal government, having more local control of our government. You do that by appearing in the media, speaking to groups around the country, sometimes running for national office -- or maybe, in the Senate.”

Paul’s visit here to The Draft restaurant, a regular stump spot in New Hampshire, was the first of two appearances he made on behalf of his father Saturday, three days before the New Hampshire primary. His appearances included vigorous arguments on Ron Paul’s behalf, especially in the area of foreign policy -- where other GOP candidates have sought to portray the Texas congressman as weak, or naïve.

Addressing a crowd of about 200 people at Windham High School, south of Concord, Paul fielded several questions about his father’s position on Iran.

“Others have said, ‘Well, Ron Paul doesn’t care about Iran getting a nuclear weapon.’  I think that’s an inaccurate representation of my father’s position,” Paul said.

“The question really then becomes,” he added, “if they do get a nuclear weapon, is there only one alternative? Is the only alternative war?"

Despite Paul’s effort to direct attention toward his father, audiences seemed unmistakably interested in him. Among the handful of people who showed up to the low-key forum here in Concord, few still were Ron Paul supporters -- though they were drawn in by the chance to see his son.

Spec Bowers -- a state representative from Sunapee who is supporting Texas Gov. Rick Perry -- approached Paul after the event to discuss local politics.

Asked why he came to the forum, Bowers told NBC News, "I came here to shake the hand of a future president."

President Obama (now 50 years old) is consistently holding up 20 hours a day. Conservatively, it's fair to say that Mr. Ron Paul wouldn't be up to the manifest task.

Rand Paul is delusional and has visions of repealing the Civil Rights Amendment in addition to his thoughts of running for President in 2016 if papa doesn't get the GOP nomination.

Junior better get ready 'cause papa ain't gonna get the nomination.

Ron Paul is the one who challenged all of the other candidates to a bike race through 90 degree weather. I would be willing to bet that he is just as healthy or more so than Obama is.

Come on, we know that he isnt working 20 hours a day with all the vacationing he does.

If it isn't blatantly obvious already the democrat equivalent of Fox supporters spit at someone without the sacred "D" behind their name shamelessly and all too often.

You guys do know Obama can't be elected to president again in 2016, right?

WTF?

So to recap …. The guy strolls in at 11:30 after a $4 million tax payer paid vacation in Hawaii, has 3 meetings and later does a little campaign teleconference before calling it a day.

Roughly 5.5 - 7 hours? (of non campaign work)

The next day he has his 30 minute PDB meeting, then spends the full day flying to Cleveland to meet with a family (pick-up a big big check from some ½ a %er?), gives a (campaign) speech on the economy to high schoolers (who literally laugh at him when he tells them they “inspire” him) flys back at a cost to the tax payer of $600,000+.

Roughly .5 -1.5 hours? (of non campaign work)

Thursday … gets in a 10:00, has 2 meetings and gives a speech

Roughly 5.5 -7 hours?

Friday … manages to get in before 10:00 (9:50) …. Has a meeting, gives a speech

Roughly 2 – 2.5 hours?

20 hours a day?

Obama barely managed 20 hours for the week … if that!

Thanks so much for your post Backhouse … I always wondered what the heck Obama was doing all the time but probably would have never bothered to actually checked without your ludicrous post.

One more thing …. I noticed you worked another thread yesterday for over 8 hours – on that single thread – 16 posts … good job!

I bet you wish Obama worked as hard as you and Feisty and Bev work, huh?

One more Backhouse …

President Obama – 61 days

President Reagan – 112 days

President Bush - 181 days

from this CBS article? …

So far, President Obama has taken 61 vacation days after 31 months in office, At this point in their presidencies, George W. Bush had spent 180 days at his ranch where his staff joined him …. And Ronald Reagan had taken 112 vacation days at his ranch.

So did you edit out the part in bold, or did you pull it from the libbie one-stop dumpster of thinkprogress where it was already pre-packaged for trolls in the know?

I would ask if you understood that Bush felt that the security of Crawford was a great place to get work done with his staff and advisors … away from the distractions and interruptions of DC ….

I would ask if you understood that working at home is not quite the same as laying on a beach in the middle of the Pacific … but …. you don’t.

It would be interesting to compare the actual costs to the country of Obama's luxurious vacations to those of Reagan and Bush at their respective ranches with staff and occassionally meeting with foreign dignitaries as well as Congressional leaders....

I wonder how many times Reid and Pelosi were invited to Martha's Vineyard or Hawaii to discuss the budget with Barry, lol!

Aug 2011: So far, President Obama has taken 61 vacation days after 31 months in office. At this point in their presidencies, George W. Bush had spent 180 days at his ranch where his staff often joined him for meetings (At what cost to taxpayers?) And Ronald Reagan had taken 112 vacation days at his ranch. Bill Clinton took the least time off -- 28 days.

    http://www.cbsnews.com/2100-18563_162-20093801.html

Bush made 77 trips to the ranch during his presidency. That is an average of 1 trip every 5 weeks. He spent 490 days at his ranch – 16.7% of his time as President.

    Bitter Bobby180

President Bush took 149 trips to Camp David, 77 visits to his Crawford ranch, and 11 trips to his father's Kennebunkport mansion. Since Air Force One reportedly cost $56,800 per hour to operate in 2004 (which Bush used to get to Crawford), and the plane can travel up to 630 miles per hour, it cost at least $259,657 to get the 2,880 miles to Crawford and back, each time Bush went, or
roughly $20 million dollars just for taking the plane on the Crawford trips
    alone.

Is it just me or has everyone strayed from the topic of this article. The headline makes reference to Rand Paul toying with the idea of running for president in 2016, if his father doesn't get elected President, which is a sure bet. I realize the thought of Rand for President isn't palatable for most intelligent people but anyone on this thread should at least acknowledge the poor guy. I have and fully understand what a total waste of time this has involved. Show some respect or go find an article about presidential vacations to hold your debate there!. To CHILLED, my apologies you alone make mention of Rand and I tottally agree with your suscinct assesstment of this kook.

    Dennis, yes.

President Bush spent 487 days at Camp David, 490 days at his Crawford Ranch, and 43 days at Kennebunkport Compound:

For a total of 1020 days = 32% of Bush's term spent on vacation.

    Hey Mickey,

Our 21st century President is probably (definitely) the hardest working President in our history.

And since he took office three years ago, it's been one big deal after another, the oil spill, disasters, earthquakes and floods. A stream of natural disasters. The Arab Spring, Libya, Egypt. AQ, Laden,Iraq, and Af. The hostage-takings and threats to close down the government, the no-compromise from GOP leaders filibustering at 3 times the pace ever seen in US history, their refusal to create jobs from the get-go to give us any help to get our economy back on track, following a catastrophic financial disaster. Republican congressinals doing all they can to defund the critical legislation that was put in place to get us back on track. The Eurpopean financial meltdown, the corruption and secrecy in campaign $billions, the Congressionals who signed their integrity as US representatives over to a Lobbyist who represents Big Oil/Big Money. Extremists on the right working with Koch and ALEC and big corporations to control our politics in a way we've not seen before.

Factor in a 24/7 media and an ever-present on-line 'reality' not seen before and ---the disinformation Faux news. Factor in all the work needed to improve our relations with the rest of the world, that had given President Bush a D- grade. Factor in historic legislation that has been passed, that went by unattempted by previous Presidents.

Folks who check into www.whitehouse.gov and check out the Briefing Room, Issues, Blog etc. on a regular basis - feel tired just thinking about the endless meetings, calls and events going on there. The young interns must be exhausted! They too write their stories on the Whitehouse Blog, and say how much they are learning and how it has changed their lives.

Phew! Security briefing every day at 6 am rain or shine. Who would do such a thankless job? Only someone who really cares about his country and, like a new parent, does not expect to get much sleep at night.

    Hello there Backhouse,

[Our 21st century President is probably (definitely) the hardest working President in our history.]

Well, there is a lot of crap to clean up from the eight years preceding him. But in this age of instant gratification, there are those who will always claim that "Obama hasn't done a thing" or "Obama hasn't done enough".

And dispite all the stonewalling and road blocks put up against him, he still has managed to accomplish quite a bit.

And finally, re: Rand Paul as (???) President ???? He's an imbecile and worse than that wants to return to the good ol' days that were good for the rich but hardly anybody else. That is before 1933. Ron Paul has some dignity, but at 76 is definitely too old to take on the Presidency. Rand Paul is an acorn that never developed into the stout oak tree that dad is. Don't think it's "like father, like son." I see no sign that Rand Paul could ever attain the maturity and honesty of his dad. Not that I agree with most of Ron Paul's polticial philosophy, but he does seem honest.

Comparing President Bush's vacations on his ranch in Texas to Obama's and family's vacations worldwide is a BIG joke. Think about how stupid it sounds. Let's compare the cost to American taxpayers that their vacations cost. Obama has so blatantly wasted so much of our money during his one term in office that we should all be outraged. Obama has been a constant embarrassment to our country with his childish behavior. When he doesn't get his way he sulks like a spoiled brat and schemes vengeance on those that spoiled his fun.

If one considers his time on the golf course or playing basketball work than maybe he would be credited 4.5 - 5 hrs. of work a day. He certainly hasn't done the work he has been paid to do. Thank goodness his term is almost over and we can get a real president that will get us and our country out of the mess he has gotten us into. He should NEVER have been elected in the first place and because of all the criminal activities that were taking place during the 2008 election with the fraudulent votes and threats from his henchmen at the voting polls, his pretense at being the president is as legal as his policies.

We will all benefit by his leaving office and a person with intelligence, experience and leadership being our new president. Only then will we and our country be able to get back on course and be the great country we have always had before Obama and his czars took over. Send the Chicago thug back to Chicago where the corrupted is accepted.

George - Why thank you for responding to my post to you. First, let me agree that "W" was a piss poor president, having even said that, is still a serious understatement of the obvious. Tax cuts at a time of war (even though they were wars of his choosing, not even getting into the validity or the lies told to get into those wars) were irresponsible. Slumbering through the run up to the housing bubble fiasco and no regulatory attention paid to this looming Sword of Damocles's situation was criminal. Bush was a "great divider" and an idiot to boot. The Crony Capitalism on display towards K Street influence peddlers, like Abramhoff, and the behind the scenes machinations of his dark prince Cheney, Haliburton's mole in more ways than just resemblance, are legendary. Clearly you are suffering from buyers remorse, which no doubt you should. I've also have no doubt you voted for him twice, which entitles you and others of being of being totally naive and easily brain-washed.

President Wilson successfully lead our nation and the world to victory over the Huns. The Great Depression was Hoover's great achievement by fiddling while the economy burned. Having been immortalized by the Hoover vacuum cleaner, which has been scientifically proved to suck just a little less than the Pres of the same name.

Now on to the present POTUS. Obama has led us back from the gaping maw of a depression. Rescued a nation left on life support and bleeding jobs profusely. Does more need to be done? Of course it does! That is why I truly believe the POTUS will get a renewed lease on the WH in 2012! Wish you could join us in the celebration! But I'm betting you'll be no fun to be around in November.

Hunter Thompson and Ed Abbey are both unfortunately dead, and I see nobody with enough talent to carry their torch on. America's loss.

amused and completely distracted... what history books have you been reading? Comic books don't count, lol! Woodie didn't want anything to do with getting involved in WWI, but weakly did so succumbing to public pressure because of the Luisitania sinking.... he was not much help in post war either, bowing to Lenin's demands... and giving Germany many concessions not normally given the loser in a costly war.... many years of Cold War was another Woodie contribution... oh ya and the League of Nations which turned into the United Nations, yikes! How'd that one turn out for us? So tell me again how great liberalism worked back then... :)!

lil debbie, I never claimed to be E.Abbey or H. Thompson and it's a little presumptuous for you to accuse me. You are showing your wacko left conspiracy tendencies!

I am a big fan of both authors (actually read F & L in LV from a series in Rolling Stone Magazine years ago). My first name is George and took the last name at this blog because I admired and understood the character, especially after Vietnam, a Lyndon Johnson toy.

As for Abbey, I do enjoy his books! Have read MRG a few times, but my favorite is Desert Solitaire! Bought the first edition of that book in High School and read it a few times.. once while camping in Arches Nat'l Park the subject of the book. If I was smart I'd have kept that 1st Edition in a safe place considering what it's worth today!

I was a liberal, but grew up and got smarter. As for this particular political race I'm definitely for anybody but Obama. His mentor Harry Reid is someone I know and while I morphed from liberalism to fiscal conservatism... good ole Harry went the opposite direction.... he found out he could make more money as a liberal. And that is another small but significant reason for my change of philosophy.

I see the liberals of today are pretty much like the liberals of the 60s/70s full of rancor and name calling but not much in the realistic solution department.

Miked-332794 - Thanks for typical conservative rant. So what if Wilson wasn't gung ho on going to war. Our nation wasn't a world super power at the time and did not have a record of getting involved with European entanglements. The bottom line is Wilson did get Congressional approval for going to war and we made the victory possible. Stop whining! Just revel in the portentous outcome.

That's blatantly false. Just because they don't agree with it for its invasion of property rights (and no other reason) doesn't mean they want to repeal it. In fact, they've pledged they wouldn't try (why would they, that would be ludicrous, would garner no Congressional support, and would be politically a terrible terrible move). Come on now. Quit it with the low brow fear tactics.

How in hell you equate danger to the sacred philosophy of "property rights" with the civil rights act is beyond me. Oh, wait. Maybe you mean the mantra that it doesn't allow motel/hotel owners, housing owners/realtors or restaurant owners to discriminate and refuse to do business with African-Americans? That's a totally false argument and you know it. There are plenty of ways that these businesspeople manage to discriminate to their heart's content, even under the feared Civil Rights Act. Really, they would like to be known ot oppose it as part of their coded message to potential voters, i.e. appealing to the bigots among us. Of course neither Paul expects to repeal the Civil Right Act, at least not in their lifetime(s), but it doesn't hurt to subtly (?) signal to the proper voting segementn of the public just where your heart lies. In other words, NOT a N---word lover.

hahaha future president. why isn't that fool stalking his man rick perry for a handshake, because he has about as much chance as the spawn of ron of becoming president.

Men are corrupt and money and power mongers. do you really think that 'liberty for all' would stand a chance why is he running on the republican ticket any way you white boys need to be scared because i see the black man rising up and kicking your ass, making you slaves if old ronnie gets his way

romney wants to baptize your dead, is a bold face liar waiting to hand the keys of the country to his buds at your expense, nothing new here. obama will beat him so let him win the nomination

santarioum is just another sleazy catholic who wants to get into your boys bedrooms and force you to marry your babies mama, i suppose molesting them would be okay with him too, but you have to marry and divorce as many as you can. he is not going anywhere but back to pa kind of a religious socialist would you not say

gingrich is the ultimate sleaze ball politician with his plastic looking wife. i am surprised the republicans are not backing this guy in droves. oh, i know, the family values thing, except reality vs rhetoric is always going to be a problem for the party of do nothing. he won't win the nomination.

you don't like obama, don't vote for him

Golden - Personally, I think Mitt Ro-money is more plastic than Barbie. Just a casual observation on my part.

Golden - After further consideration, you are correct Caligula (Newt's wife) is plastic as well, but she is only an extremely close 2ND to Ro-money.

willard Romney is definitely the plastic man who looks at you funny as if you somehow sneaked into his private all-guys club of rich people, born with a silver spoon in their mouths and making whatever $ they make by ripping off the working people. Romney belongs in a non-democratic country (we are fast becoming one) and I hope in hell he goes back to do something constructive like running a Sunday school. His governorship of Massachusetts was such a disaster that not only did he not seek a second term in that otherwise intlelligent state, but the Boston Globe, the most influental newspaper there, endorsed Jon Hutsman for President a short time ago....Romney can't telll the truth or level with people to save his own neck. Newt Gingrigh had to tell him to "cut the pious baloney" during the Sunday debate when Romney tried to pretend he is a sort of George Washington, Gentleman Farmer type, who does not seek elective office except to do good for his country. (lol). In fact romney has been trying to win public office consistently since 1994, a fact he couldn't deny. He also refuses to release his tax returns to show his finances, maybe not legallyrequired now butit would be a nice gesture of openness since everybody knows he's rich and wants to give the rich more tax cuts and raise taxes for the middle and lower We don't need this little would-be heir apparent to King Geoge III.

Should Ron Paul get elected(not happening), its more likely the North Korean model of succession will be employed. From "endearing kook" to "wacko kook".

One never knows where the government will go on behalf of it's people. For the last several years the pendulum hasn't swung too far one way or the other. This guy wants to swing the pendulum all the way around and so far not enough people are on board.

When they talk about returning control of government to the local level that is because the Federal government doesn't allow discrimination and other "intrusive governmental powers" they loath. These racists would just soon not have Uncle Sam them that they can't discriminate against black people and/or whomever else they want to discriminate against. Another euphemism they use to try and justify discrimination is "private property owner's rights." That anybody should be permitted to discriminate against whomever they choose. We have already seen where that gets us. Ever heard of slavery? In their warped view of the world Wool Worth's was completely justified in their private property ownership rights to discriminate against black people by not serving them based on their race! The rednecks still are not happy that the Feds ever got involved in the South in the 1960s. They still see the integration of the University of Mississippi and the southern universities by the Federal government as a slap in their redneck faces. In their mind the Feds should have left the investigation of the murders against the civil rights workers to the local authorities who had done nothing but turn a blind eye since the slaves were firs freed. Which, as you can probably imagine they think Abraham Lincoln had no right, authority or justification to tell them they couldn't have slaves and that if a "local" government decided to allow slavery then the Feds have no right to tell them otherwise. These bigots, both Rand and Ron Paul are the most evil, vile and insidious type of racists because they have learned to couch their hatred in terms that are not as sinister sounding as the old "N" word and the other hate speech of yesteryear.

I'm amazed at the vacation issue. Perhaps W was an exception but I don't know of many presidents who have had an easy job. Well, maybe Reagan, but that explains Bush trying to emulate him.

To the point of the article, when Rand Paul revealed he was OK with racial discrimination in terms of it's constitutionality, I figure his father would be appalled. As it turns out, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. I used to respect Paul senior. Never have Rand.

I suspect that Obama will lose the election. I voted for him, will probably do it again just because of the lack of a candidate I have any respect for on the Repub side. Assuming he does lose, I can't imagine our country's future. Everyone with a remote chance for the nomination is owned by corporations. Perhaps Obama is as well. Our free market system isn't free, it's for sale to the highest bidder. And I'm bitter.
