Romney says no to Obama's 'big, bad things'

DERRY, NH -- For once, Mitt Romney gave credit today for President Obama coming through on a campaign promise.

"Candidate Barack Obama was here speaking and he said he was going to bring big things to America," Romney said, standing in the same high school gymnasium in Derry, New Hampshire where then-Sen. Obama spoke on January 6, 2008. "Well, he did. And they came with big price tags. And they didn't work out so well. Big things. Bad things. Expensive things. He brought Obamacare. We don't want Obamacare. We don't need it, we don't want it. "

Romney repeated the mantra several times during today's rally, labeling the Dodd-Frank financial reform bill and other Democratic achievements of the past three years among President Obama's "big, bad things, expensive things."

Here in Romney's firewall state of New Hampshire -- where NBC/Marist polling conducted this week shows Romney enjoying a 20-point lead over his closest challenger -- the former Massachusetts governor cautioned the more than 900 supporters in attendance not to rest on their laurels in the final days before the primary.

"Let me tell you, don’t get too confident with those poll numbers. I've watched poll numbers come and go. Things change very quickly; it's very fluid. I need to make sure you guys get your friends to go out and you vote as well," Romney said.

And while today's crowd, warmed up by Romney-imported South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, was largely friendly, the candidate did face a brief disruption by a small but vocal group of Occupy protestors, who chanted "Mitt Kills Jobs," while the candidate looked on. As a chorus of pro-Romney chants drowned out the group, and police closed in on them, Romney smiled.

"Well we're lucky to live in a country where people are able to express their views," Romney said. "Although I do prefer when we do it with respect and civility."

It is pretty clear that Mittens trying to attack Obama over the Affordable Care Act is a losing proposition because he was all for it before he was against it.

It jsut horrible! All those 'big, bad things'! Things like protecting consumers from illegal, and unethical practices of pay day lenders, mortgage brokers, investment advisers, etc. It's just unconscionable to want to repair, and improve the infrastructure! My goodness, doing it will only create jobs, and provide an affordable, efficient way for business to conduct business. We wouldn't want business to have an efficient infrastructure, now would we? That would only mean they could hire more people. It would only put more money into the hands of consumers, and those selfish ba$tards would only want to spend it to buy things. How dare they want to increase demand.

And a healthy population? OMG! What could they be thinking?!?! How could they want a healthy population that could work more efficiently, wih fewer sick days? If they get sick, too bad, we'll just hire the next person in line, and throw the sickie on the street.

Education for everyone? Why? You don't need an education to dig a ditch . . . oh wait, we outsourced that . . . it's not like you need an education to . . . well, cr@p, education is important . . . make it for profit! Yeah, that's it! If they can't afford school, then they must be too dumb to go to school. Besides, we can hire foreign college graduates that had their education paid for by their native country's government. They're healthy, too, they had free health care while growing up.

Yep, paying to improve infrastructure, education, and health care, are really big, bad things, alright. And that food stamp/unemployment crap has to go, too. It only ensures that people can eat when there are no jobs, it only fills the demand slump when our financial schemes backfire, cause a worldwide recession, and throw millions out of a job. Shoot, if they are unemployed, it is because they are lazy, and they don't deserve to eat, never mind that we laid them off last month.

Yep, 'big, bad things', alright.

It doesnt matter. Unlike Carter and clinton, BO's left of left policies scare too many voters the middle.

No matter what axlerod does, this election is about BO.

He could have done next to NOTHING, and the economy would have "V'd" out of the recession faster and stronger.

Insteads almost 4 years in and we are stil scrappng the bottom. BO was hired to pull us out.. instead the numbers will remain worse , or at best, exactly where they were whe he got elected. YOU CANT HAVE IT BOTH WAYS BO..way, way too many stanglehold laws TOGEHER WITH Economic growth.

Even if the unemployment goes to 8%, that like going from a F to D- and saying the problem is fixed (and the politcal math that makes that number is a lie perpetuated by both parties to produce an artificialy, UNREALISTICLY low number).

I've seem all kinds of comparisons, except the one that counts: The 1976 democtratic primaries.

Check out this 1976 democratic field for POTUS, cluttered with racists and career zombies, MOST of whom could not make it in the private sector:

carter, jackson, shap, shiver, wallace, washingnton, bayh, bentsen, byrd, church, fauntney, harris, udall and brown.

And out of that unremarkable, over-rated heap of career HOT AIR MACHINES who RISES TO THE TOP OF THE DUNG and gets the nomination?...What is widley considered to be the worst president in history.

But it wasnt about weak carter, like it wont be about Romney (and Romney is much stronger than sunken-chested BO or whiny carter .

Liberals get your 2010 horse binders and drift in to your utopia. A place where everbody lives in a solar powered mushroom houses, tends their victory garden and cleans up each other unicorn poop.

Sounds good but its totally unrealistic, no matter how many laws are paased to legistate the lazy and stupid into prosperity.

Like 2010 it will be a pleasure watching the MSNBC minions cling to wishfull-thinking utopia as their party, at all levels, is washed out to sea.

The worst Prez in recent history belongs to Reagan.

While his wife was telling us to "Just say No!", good old Reagan was selling drugs to Americans so that the gov could finance the overthrow of legitimate governments below the border.

    And 'trickle down economics'?

Romney says no to Obama's Big, Bad, Things?

Romney is talking down to the American public as if we are third graders. Only little children are talked to in such mannerisms.

Just like Romney's recent line "We are going to win this thing.", which he has not clearly defined, he has once again generally described what he is talking about to catch your mind.

When politicians use the phrases that have like Romney where only general catch words are used like things which could mean anything they are merely trying to make you think that if Romney is elected that he will be the cure all for what problems the country has.

Has Romney once described in defined detail what the "THINGS" are that he is going to cure? Not once. He just keeps using general catch phrasess to make Americans think that he can cure the problems of America.

Does America need a president that can talk only in general catch phrases that are meant to confuse Americans into thinking that with him being president that his God sees the problems in your minds and will be cured?

    Not even wrong.

How many of you were confused when you read the article title as all of the problems in your mind swam through your mind?

That is exactly the tactic that Romney is using to cause confusion among the voters. Its called literal brainwashing. Bush tried it during his time in office and looke what happened.

Romney is Bi-Polar and cannot produce a coherently defined response to anyone nor can be state a coherently designed question.

Otherwise he wouldn't be using words like thing which should actually be replaced with a definative word.

Romney is a generalist and would be a disaster for the country if elected.

Popular spending programs that benefit everyone should be paid for by everyone. All of us need to pay higher taxes for programs that we feel are necessary.

The problem comes when we want something for nothing. We shouldn't keep getting benefits that we are unwilling to pay for. If a program isn't worth raising taxes to pay for then cut it.

If that makes me an unfeeling right wingnut or a tax and spend liberal then so be it!

Neither Romney nor Obama has any real plan for fixing the economy or deficits. Both sides are supporting idiots who have no clue!

And I agree with your post.

Problem is, the repubs want only the middle class to pay.
Obama bent many times trying to comprimise and was seen as weak.

As you said, everyone must contribute.
Obama was handed an economic Lemon. Not blaming here, just pointing out a fact.

No Party really has a clue as to how to pull America out of a depression.
      It must be from within.

Recent historical evidence points to the Conservative paradigm having a detrimental effect to not only our economic health, but our stature abroad.
We have been culturaly devolving under their policies.

Only recently have we started to wake up and call an extremist, from either end of the spectrum, a dangerous thing.

Zach> Joe Wilson is not a "colleague" of Mr. Romney who has never been a member of the House of Representatives. That said, Mr. Obama is a liar in addition to being less than competent.

When we lack the freedom to call POTUS a liar if we believe it warranted then we have lost that which differentiates America from totalitarian regimes. I'm not inclined toward that path.

        #35.1 - Sat Jan 7, 2012 4:06 PM EST

Rick: Does "colleague" mean that one must be a member of the House of Representatives with Mr. Wilson??!!?? Can "colleague" mean both men are members of the same political party?? If the latter, then who is the liar here? You or the President?

TJefferson> Colleague is defined in dictionaries. Feel free to do some research independently. It could mean that both men are members of the same political party but then if you expand it broadly enough it could include any member of the human race.

          #35.3 - Sat Jan 7, 2012 4:34 PM EST

Rick: You are 100% correct. However, when I used the term "colleague" I was broadly referring to our elected officials (i.e. governors, members of congress, etc.). With regards to the original comment, the real issue isn't about about calling the president a liar but rather the manner in which it was done. Incidentally, that is the same point that Romney is making. It is OK to protest and he had no problem with protesters exercising their right to protest. But as he correctly pointed out the protest must be done with "respect and civility." Calling the president of the United States a liar while he is giving a speech does not exhibit "respect and civility." If we are going to call out protesters for bad behavior we should also be able to call out our elected officials for similar behavior. This should be done regardless of political affiliation.

I encourage all Americans to read the editorial entitled, "The right Republican," in the December 11, 2011 issue of The Economist magazine, a magazine that reflects the view of intelligent, well educated, conservatives in both Britain and the world. I do not
want to give my own views here WHY the Republicans have done what they have done, but only to communicate to you some of the reasons why intelligent conservatives are so shocked by what has emerged a once great reform political party. The two paragraphs below are quotations from the following: "The right Republican," in The Economist, December 31st, 2011, P. 7.

"Nowadays, a (Republican) candidate must believe not just some but all of the following things: that abortion should be illegal in all cases; that gay marriage must be banned even in states that want it; that the 12 million illegal immigrants, even those who have lived in America for decades, must all be sent home; that the 46 million people who lack health insurance have only themselves to blame; that global warming is a conspiracy; that any form of gun control is unconstitutional; that any form of tax increase must be vetoed, even if the increase is only the cancelling of an expensive and market-distorting perk; that Israel can do no wrong and the 'so-called Palestinians,' to use Mr. Gingrich's term, can do no right; that the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Education and others whose names you do not have to remembershould be abolished."

"Most depressingly, the fatwas have stifled ideas, making the Republican Party the enemy of creative positions it once pioneered. The idea of requiring every American to carry health insurance (thus broadening the insurance pool and reducing costs) originated in the conservative Heritage Foundation as a response to Clinton-care, and was put into practice by then Governor Ronney in Massachusetts. All this Mr. Romney has had to disavow, while Rick Perry is still explaining his appalling laxity as governor of Texas in allowing the children of illegal immigrants to receive subsidized college
              education."

This is a continuation of my post #47 above from the following: "The right Republican," in The Economist, December 31st, 2011, P. 7.

"On the economy, where this newspaper has often found the most common ground with the Republicans, the impact (of the move to the right I quoted in my post #47 above) has been especially unfortunate. America's commercial classes are fed up with a president they associate with big government, red tape, and class warfare. A Republican could stake out a way to cut the deficit, reform taxes
and refashion government. But instead of businesslike pragmatism, there is
zealotry. The candidates have made a fetish out of never raising taxes (even
when it involves getting rid of loopholes) while mostly ignoring tough decisions about cutting spending on defense or pensions. Such compassionless conservatism (slashing taxes for the rich and expenditure on the poor) comes with little thought as to which bits of government spending are useful.
Investing in infrastructure, redesigning public education and maintaining
unemployment benefits in the worst downturn since the Depression are hardly
              acts of communism.

We didn't leave you; you left us

Elections are decided in the middle. If the Republicans choose an extreme candidate, they can hardly be surprised if independents plump for Mr. Obama, or look to a third-party candidate. But there could be two better outcomes for them.

The first would be if Mr. Romney secures a quick victory, defines his base and
moves firmly to the centre. In theory, there is enough in his record to suggest
that he may be the chief executive America needs, though such boldness is
asking a lot of a man who still seems several vertebrae short of a backbone
(John McCain, a generally braver man, flunked it in 2008). The alternative is
that the primary race grinds to a stalemate, with neither Mr. Romney nor one of
his rivals able to secure a victory. Then a Bush, Daniels or Christie just might be tempted into the contest. It is a sad commentary that this late in the day "the right Republican" does not even seem to be running yet."

There are no big unions anymore. That's why Gingrich can propose repealing child labor laws. You will have to find a new boogie man to blame.

Romney is living proof you don't have to be smart to make money in US Corporate world. You just need to be born with a silver spoon in your mouth and you can be a stupid as the stump in the yard. Speak for yourself dipsh!t. We do want healthcare and we do want the bankers and the WallStreet fatcats hands tied so they don't bring us Great Depression III. If you are a multi-billionaire sure you don't need protection from the insurance company. But the rest of us don't want a world where corporations set the rules and police themselves at our expense and misery. In the past Romney was taken for what he is a flip flopper who will say or do anything to get elected whether he believes it or not. Now that he is in a position to actually do real harm to our Nation he can go to straight to Hell. The GOP has brought our Nation two Great Depressions already we don't want or need a third. We have all scene what deregulation looks like and we've all seen how big business will crash the economy to make more and quicker and easier profits. I's what we call letting the fox watch he hen house.

Romney will say anything once and then change it two more times to suit the occasion and the audience. Romney is flexible on all issues with multiple versions for each occasion.

The only credible publican candidate is Jon Huntsman, one can actualy beleive that he actually stands for what he says!

Did you ever wonder if we represent anyone other than our selves? I read more and more websites and it's the same old tired individuals making the same tired comments and using all kids of cute names for Obama, Romney or whomever... and I get out in the street.. and those people have no relationship to the junk I read on these websites. Those people are tired of the tax cuts, losing their Medicare and Social Security and want affordable health care.... and the end of the junk in Congress... and the view on the GOP debates?... you don't want to know....

Romney is the same book as Obama with a different cover.

Vote for Romney or P.Obama if you want to be a slave.
