NBC/Marist Poll: Romney has 20-point lead in N.H.; Santorum gets Iowa bounce

A new NBC News-Marist poll of NH Republicans shows Romney with a 20-point lead. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

Just four days until Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney now enjoys a 20-point advantage over his nearest rival in the Granite State, according to a new NBC News-Marist poll conducted after his photo-finish victory in Iowa.

Click here to read the full NBC News-Marist poll results

The survey also shows a double-digit bounce since late November in the state for former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum – who trailed Romney by a mere eight votes in Iowa – as well as a 15-point decline for former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

And it finds that New Hampshire voters have begun to make up their minds before the Jan. 10 contest, with six in 10 now strongly supporting their candidate of choice.

According to the poll, Romney gets the backing of 42 percent of likely Republican primary voters in New Hampshire, including those leaning toward a particular candidate.

He’s followed by Texas Rep. Ron Paul at 22 percent, Santorum at 13 percent, Gingrich and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman both tied at 9 percent, and Texas Gov. Rick Perry at 1 percent.

More than a month ago – in an NBC-Marist poll conducted Nov. 28-30 – Romney stood at 39 percent, Gingrich at 24 percent, Paul at 16 percent, Huntsman at 9 percent, Perry at 3 percent and Santorum at 2 percent.

What’s more in this newest survey, 60 percent of likely voters say they strongly support their candidate of choice, up from 49 percent in the last poll. Just 11 percent say they might vote differently.

Electability and ideology help Romney
Electability and the state’s ideological makeup are helping Romney in New Hampshire.

Sixty-five percent of likely primary voters believe that the former Massachusetts governor has the best chance of beating President Barack Obama in November. And more than 60 percent of these voters prefer an electable nominee to one who is a true conservative.

Romney still underperforms among conservative voters, Tea Party supporters and evangelical Christians in the state -- but not to the extent he did in Iowa.

'Meet The Press' moderator David Gregory joins Brian Williams.

Indeed, he leads among very conservative voters (getting 30 percent to 27 percent for Santorum), Tea Party supporters (35 percent to Paul’s 25 percent) and evangelical Christians (31 percent to Santorum’s 30 percent).

In addition, there are fewer of these more conservative voters in New Hampshire than there were in Iowa.

“New Hampshire is a very different ballgame than Iowa,” says Lee Miringoff, the director of Marist College’s Institute for Public Opinion, which conducted the survey.

Paul’s low ceiling, debates matter
While Paul sits in second place in the NBC-Marist poll, he has a lower ceiling than Santorum has. Forty-three percent of likely voters find Paul unacceptable, versus 25 percent who say the same about Santorum.

Meanwhile, 44 percent find Gingrich unacceptable, and 54 percent find Perry unacceptable.

Just 16 percent of these voters say that Romney is not acceptable.

The poll also shows that the debates – and two more of them take place this weekend – have mattered to New Hampshire voters.

A combined 45 percent say they have helped decide their vote a “great deal” or a “good amount.” That’s compared with a combined 10 percent who say the same about the results from the Iowa caucuses, and a combined 20 percent who say the same thing about seeing the candidates in person.

Obama remains under water in New Hampshire
Finally, President Obama’s job-approval rating in New Hampshire stands at 40 percent among registered voters, which is identical to where it was in late November.

He carried New Hampshire by nearly 10 percentage points in the 2008 general election.

The NBC-Marist poll was conducted Jan. 4-5, and its margin of error for the 2,260 registered voters surveyed is plus-minus 2.1 percentage points. The margin of error for the 711 likely New Hampshire Republican primary voters is plus-minus 3.7 percentage points.

Tad I think those days are gone, and a lot has to do with lieing politicians from both parties. Social Security, the debt each President from either party don`t fix anything, and pass it to the next President.

Bush1, Clinton, Bush2, and Obama have created or supported free trade deals that have destroyed our economy.

Remember Ross Perot wanted to start correcting these problems in 1992. We wouldn`t have these huge messes now. BUT HE WAS CRAZY. So we didn`t vote for him. Now we have this CRAZY guy Ron Paul who actually could fix the problems, but the average american is a nit wit, and can`t figure it out.

Thank you dave I freaking love you for that lol. I wish our neighboring country of Canada were able to vote they been screaming vote Ron Paul but the average american dont listen or bother to ask them for thier opinion. Romney is getting waaay too much media hype to help him out in winning. They mention Ron Paul to the minimum so he has a lower chance of winning. But boy im telling yah this guy is the real deal folks. Obama or Romney wins or that war mongerer say hello to the death of the USA and hello to the North American Union. I wonder what our new money is gonna look like? Polymer? Amero? North American Federation? Try to ebay/google this money! It's already made!

Mccain endorsing Romney is not surprising. Neither of them stand for anything other than more welfare / warfare state. One loser endorsing another loser. Neither can beat Obama because they present no significant alternative policies.

Are you kidding me? You calling us supporters of Ron Paul vermin? Really? Really? I guess you're enjoying the fact our economy is going to hell because 51% of your tax money is going into this war. Not to mention both american and innocent people in this war that sadly gets put in the cross fire are being killed. Is this what you want? Did you not see the news report how our military is "dropping" weapons on the innocent they accidently kill and call them terrorist? I live in Arizona and John McCain is governor here and I agree with him 100% that Romney is nothing but a flipfloper that will ride the ocean and do anything to get votes. You support this man? He'll lie to all you dumb idiots/supporters of him just as much as every other president we have had lately just to get into office and then Rein over our country. I'm sick of the insults you people give Ron Paul the man was part of the constitution before we even had one. I want real change and peace so yes I support Ron Paul 500% and yes even over Obama and im black can you believe that? While they say over and over again giving Romney these great "headlines" on how great he is maybe you people should look in Romney's history of how he destroyed jobs. I think the man is dangerous he spends so much time going to business to business finding out what is going wrong with thier business that not only he probably knows how to fix it, Lets flip the chessboard around how about know exactly what to do to make it worse! Eh? Eh? I dont believe Ron Paul is senile in the slightest, the man is intelligent but im telling you now I rathier have a president that keep lies to the minimum and sincerely make changes to the country then another man that going to keep this Bush/Obama party going. Wake up people! We have to get back our Senate and put the right man into Presidency to get our country back! And I as a black man show the colors of red/white and blue and I dont care if its a racist or not president to do it. Racism has nothing to do with someone capable running a country people and moving it into a better direction infact!

You live in Arizona and John McCain is a senator there and even though Centrist McCain called him a flipflopper last time, he's supporting him this time.

Republicans that Democrats profess to like flock together.

But, you sound like a Ron Paul fan. And hey, if you really are black and considering voting for a non-Democrat whitey, that's a good thing. Getting a little more open-minded.

Jeffrey, Santorum's speech was awesome on Tuesday night.

He's not my first choice, who is sadly departed, and was a woman (I anesthetized myself from any sexist/misogynist charges for life), but A++ on the speech. I mean the dad-fleeing-Mussolini's Italy, the big calloused hands, the working class yada yada yada on and on and on. Good stuff. Expertly tailored towards blue collar white people in the Midwest who will decide the election too. Incidentally.

Definitely above Romney on the GOP choices list.

This Republican Party Presidental Nomination election reminds me of Olympic Diving contests where each candidate gets up and "dives" with the individual poll companies showing their "score paddles". First up is Romney where all the poll companies put up 9s and 10s on their paddles. Next up will be Grindrich, the Perry, then Santorum all taking their "dives" and the polls all showing their score paddles.

I want Romney to win the nomination just so he loses against incumbent President Obama so we have another 3 years of economic recession to get prices down so that we, as a country, can make products and provide services that are competitively priced in the world markets, rather than the current products and services made in the USA that are affordable to no one, including the rich and 1%.

I watched Palin telling Hannity that th GOP establishment better not disrespct Ron Paul, or his supporters. If we are going to end up with banker boy Romney maybe Paul should run 3rd party. He probably would not win but he would scare the living hell out of both parties. He probably would get 20-35%. Anti war, and end the drug war Dems would be tempted to go with him. That might get the DNC, and GOP`s attention.

The one thing I do know is that I absolutely do not want a bible thumper in the presidential seat. I have to wonder why these religious zealots think that poking their noses into peoples private lives is running the country. They should be giving more thought to the deficit and have some guts to bring back America to a productive and thriving country even if it means going back to the gold standard, tightening foreign trade policies and regulating financial industries. But the biggest things I hear about are how to raise our families, abortion abolished, and "lord forbid a gay marriage" which has nothing to do with total welfare of the entire country. If push comes to shove I will vote for Obama and the Tea Party can go fish.

These liberal zealots will take your hard-earned money out of your pocket and spend it foolishly and wastefully. They pay their selves high salaries to sit around and think of ways to enforce their agendas to the detriment of the middle class and the poor. An excellent example is welfare before the 90's reforms and the dependency of millions it fostered. They ram their insistence of gay marriage, lifestyles, and the recruitment of heterosexuals, extreme environmentalism, and socialism down America's collective throats. These issues have everything to do with the jobs, the economy, and individuals rights through the sheer neglect of substantative progress of traditional government issues. Don't get pushed by the LeftyLibDem shovers. Vote in favor of your self and your neighbors, vote for a Republican.

Sharky, the reality is BO is on really shaky ground in terms of voter confidence, economic stagnation, and demonstrable accomplishments. The top risks of course to your horse... dismal economy continues whether exacerbated by Europe or BO's incompetence and vilification; Arab spring turns violent, including Iran & Israel; Supreme Ct. overturns ObamaCare. There are many variations on these themes and not many portend well for the POTUS.

Im confused, the Bush Administration bails out Wall Street (not saying it didn't have to happen I just question how) Wall Street gets $700 billion, doesn't use it the way they were supposed to and earned $3 trillion on the governments money and you all keep complaining about entitlements for people who sit on their butts and don't earn it. Obama bails out the auto industry, most of the money is paid back and industry and the jobs are rebounding. When you look at the personal entitlements in this country compared to the corporate ones, it a joke. Please remember companies like GE earned billions this year and paid ZERO corporate income taxes. I know as a middle class income earner, I paid about 25 times that in federal income taxes alone. We aren't a country made up of voting citizens anymore, we are now just the cannon fodder that the corporations use as a distraction, and we're so short-sighted we let them do it.

Not only detained for ever you can be killed by the gov`t with no due process. Almost the whole congress, and Senate passed it. Obama signed it into law a week ago. Surprisingly in the senate democrats, and republicans voted against it.

I can see you like him, but he doesn't have enough steam to make it. He doesn't have enough universal support for the nomination... The real question is: If you are a Republican are you going to vote for the Republican nominee, or are you going to vote for Ron Paul as an Indepentent. I do not particularly like Mitt Romney; however I like him a bunch more than Barack Obama...

A vote for Ron Paul might be like a vote for Ross Perrot... Ross split the vote and gave us a Democrat as President...

There already staeling the people money John Corzine`s firm MFS Global went bankrupt, and $1.2 BILLION DOLLARS is missing from account holders, and I don`t see much being done by either party. None of the CEO`s no where or how the money disappeared. They all should have been arrested already.
