Huntsman snags Boston Globe endorsement; ad blitz coming

NEWPORT, NH -- It is a good day to be Jon Huntsman.

DURHAM, NH - Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman, former Utah governor, speaks to employees during a campaign stop Thursday at Goss International.

The former Utah governor will soon have his first television ads hit the airwaves in South Carolina. His major endorsement by the Boston Globe was posted online Thursday evening and will be in Friday's paper.

As he hosted 300-person town hall meeting Thursday in snowy Newport, a pro-Huntsman super PAC, Our Destiny, announced it will launch a television ad blitz in South Carolina on Monday on behalf of Huntsman, according to an organization official. This will be the first ad featuring Huntsman outside of New Hampshire, where he has focused his campaign. The PAC will buy up broadcast and cable spots in the Palmetto state, but did not specify how much would be spent.

Huntsman said he did not know about the ad buy tonight and was "grateful" for the support.

"We need it," he told reporters.

Our Destiny will also spend an additional $300,000 in New Hampshire to extend an ad buy with just 5 days to go before the primary.

These ad buys comes a day after Huntsman announced that he would air his first ad of his own. The $200,000 purchase on New Hampshire's WMUR was half-funded by individual contributions and half supported by a personal contribution of $100,000 by Huntsman and his wife, Mary Kaye.

Thursday night, Huntsman got another boost, announcing that he received the Boston Globe's endorsement for the New Hampshire primary.

The paper, which is widely circulated in southern New Hampshire, said Huntsman would be the "best candidate to seize this moment in GOP history, and the best-prepared to be president."

The editorial was also a lengthy indictment of Massachusetts' former governor, front-runner Mitt Romney. It went so far as to say Huntsman would "be a better president" than Romney.

"While Romney proceeds cautiously, strategically, trying to appease enough constituencies to get himself the nomination, Huntsman has been bold," the editorial said. "Rather than merely sketch out policies, he articulates goals and ideals."

The Globe added it supported Huntsman's education, immigration, economic and foreign policies based on his experience.

Spot on Feisty!

Huntsman is too sane for the Republicans. Such a shame. The debate we should be having should be between Huntsman and Obama. Two sane men who love their country. Instead we get "So now you like me?" Romney or "All blacks need to get off welfare" Santorum or isolationist Paul. It is three extremes or Obama. Tough decision. NOT!

* BREAKING NEWS *

Think Progress:

An Iowa GOP caucus voter who helped count the votes at his small caucus meeting in Moulton, Iowa claims that former Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA) accidentally received 20 extra votes than he earned — a claim which, if true, would change the winner of the unusually close caucus to former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA):

When Mitt Romney won Iowa by eight votes and I’ve got a 20-vote discrepancy here, that right there says Rick Santorum won Iowa,” True said. “Not Mitt Romney.”

It was against Huntsman.. Lots of Oriental background music, Huntsman speaking Mandarin and last frame was Huntsman in Mao outfit.

It was such a cheesy smear attempt, I was LOL

Huntsman, former governor and ambassador to China, has served our country well.

From the Think Progress article:

According to KCCI, a spokesperson for the Iowa GOP said that “True is not a precinct captain and he’s not a county chairperson so he has no business talking about election results.”

Umm, I thought this was America, and he would have the right to talk about anything he wanted to talk about. This statement really shines a light on the typical Republican/TP Inc. mindset.

Matt, they are so scared of losing their precious first in the nation status they bend over, kiss and genuflect when the nats whisper in their direction. Too much money at stake every four years.

Besides they really did work overtime getting mitts the win last night..

I agree when someone get the goods, they have that absolute right to report it!

* UPDATE *

Think Progress:

On Fox News’ On The Record tonight, Santorum said that he spoke with the head of the Iowa Republican Party, who told him that there was a separate counting error that incorrectly stripped 21 votes from Romney. Therefore, the two counting errors, according to Santorum, have largely offset themselves, although the final certification is yet to be completed.

Why is everyone in such a hurry to write off the candidacy of so many people?

FYI, all of the primaries/caucuses prior to April 3rd have proportionally allocated delegates. Additionally, five of those states are being penalized for violating Republican National Committee rules by moving the dates of their primary/caucus ahead. Those states are New Hampshire, South Carolina, Florida, Arizona and Michigan. Each state will have their number of delegates reduced by 50%.

After adjusting for the penalty in each of those five state, there are 1,167 delegates up for grabs prior to April 3rd. Even if Romney somehow managed to get 50% of the vote in each state, which he won't, that would only net him 584 delegates of the 1,144 he would need to win the nomination. He would have roughly 50% or less of the delegates he would need at that point. All primaries/caucuses held on April 3rd and after are winner take all contest.

The longer Rick Santorum, Rick Perry, Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul and Jon Huntsman remain in the process the more alternatives there are to Romney. It is my opinion that New Hampshire will be a high water mark for the Romney campaign in the low 40% range. The results in other states are going to be more similar to Iowa where it will be split among candidates. By splitting the proportionally allocated delegate states, it makes it that much more difficult for any one candidate to reach the 1,144 needed to win the nomination.

It has been 60 years since the last brokered convention. I think it would be amusing to watch the Republicans have one. A brokered convention would result in the nominee being determined in early September which would only give them 8 weeks until the general election (less in states that allow early voting.)

Greg I think that the only way the bosses can get Mitts the nomination is to keep as many in play as long as possible this is the only reason for someone like perry to be still running. But, there is a lot of stupid ego's out there, you never can tell

More news to frost Mitts.....

LAKE JACKSON, Texas – 2012 Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul is in second place in the key early voting state of New Hampshire with a remarkable 24 percent of the vote, according to a new poll.

The Washington Times/Zogby Analytics Poll, taken after the Iowa Caucuses Iowa shows, Rick Santorum with just 11 percent, and Newt Gingrich, Jon Huntsman, and Rick Perry earned just 9, 8, and 1 percent, respectively.

Poll highlights include an acknowledgment that Paul has an opportunity for growth, and that about half of all single voters support the 12-term Congressman from Texas.

“On the heels of his close third place finish at the Iowa Caucus, Ron Paul is polling a strong second place in New Hampshire. From here on out, it is a two-man race between Ron Paul and Mitt Romney given that one of the tickets out of Iowa was a dead-end due to Rick Santorum’s glaring lack of viability,” said Ron Paul 2012 National Campaign Chairman Jesse Benton.

“There are only two campaigns that have the resources and infrastructure to win the Republican nomination – and one of those organizations belongs to Ron Paul,” added Mr. Benton.

The poll of 498 likely primary voters has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points and ten percent undecided, showing Dr. Paul with the potential to catch and surpass Gov. Romney and win the Granite State.

Is this Dr Paul catching lightning in a bottle!!!

The former governor of Massachusetts will not be pleased. Neither will the GOP establishment. Should I send a box of tissues?

Alas, though, my friend Egilman, I am afraid they won't allow Dr. Paul to close in on Mr. Romney.

Just some observations from your buddy on the left. :)

So why is the Boston Globe endorsement of Jon Huntsman in my local news section being covered by my local news, but this First Read has not been linked ANYWHERE on the MSNBC homepage? There are plenty of older articles that can be pulled down, so this can be posted.

Going out on a limb here, people.

              NH results:

First place: Virtual tie between Huntsman, and Romney (Huntsman probably with the '8 vote ' advantage, this time), w/Ron Paul, and Rick Santorum in a virtual tie for third.

              or

First place: John Huntsman w/Romney a not so close, but definite second, and, again, Ron Paul, and Rick Santorum a virtual tie for third.

              SC results:

First Place: Rick Santorum, with John Huntsman a very respectable second (no name recognition, and not 'Christian' enough . . . darn that Mormonism! . . . but a Mormon that even SC evangelicals can like). Ron Paul in third, and Romney . . . well, he might want to skip this state, he is just too much of a Mormon, and not conservative enough.

Thr Republican Convention will be a respectful contest between Huntsman, and Santorum for the nomination. However, Romney, and Ron Paul will both have enough votes to throw the election to either one (Romney more than Paul, though), and both will be vying for the vice Presidential spot in exchange for their support (since no one will have gained a decisive majority, no one can presume, or afford to pick a VP before the convention, the VP spot will be used to bargain for votes at the convention).

Gingrich will be there throwing rocks (metaphorically) at Romney, and blaming everyone but himself for his not winning, but he will have enough votes that everyone will have to put up with him, while wishing that he would just go away.

Meanwhile, Sarah Palin will be a 'special correspondent' for Faux Noise, while trying to make a backroom deal to become at least the VP pick, or for a cabinet position. She will be outed by one of the more moderate Republican/TP Inc. people she dissed back when she was with McCaine. Maybe, just maybe this will convince her that no one but a very tiny group of people want her around, or care about what she has to say. She finally realizes that she was the 'token' TEA Partier that the Republican/TP Inc. party kept around to keep the TEA Party people in their camp.

Who becomes the Republican/TP Inc. party candidate? If they are smart, John Huntsman (but the Republican/TP Inc. 'smart' track record, so far, is not good), with a total unknown, but definitely not in the mold of SP, person as VP . . . or Chris Christie, who will 'reluctantly' accept the position (while doing the 'happy dance' in his mind, God help us, and everyone around him who might get hurt, if he does it in public). While Romney, and Paul are promised important, but equal in power cabinet positions to keep them in the fold . . . but they are convinced it is for 'party unity' rather than the real reason: no one really wanted them as a VP, anyway.

Now that I think about it, there is a slight, but definite chance that, if Huntsman gets the nomination, Santorum is put forward as VP . . . maybe even a very good chance . . . hmmm . . .

No matter what happens, this year's Republican/TP Inc. party convention promises to be very entertaining.

Jon Huntsman is the guy who officially nominated Sarah Palin for vice-president in 2008. Then he skipped the country (as ambassador to China) while the Republican party spent the next two years going crazy. Now he's back, alarmed — but unmarked — by the madness and convinced he can bring his party back.

"Northstar." That is awesome...sorry i missed that one. Let's see, we have Obama the Muslim and Huntsman the Maoist. Our relationship with China will probably be the most important Foreign Affair of this century and Huntsman is reasonable and experienced both as a governor and Ambassador to China. That is pretty weak Paul...they may fall for that in Iowa but hopefully not in New Hampshire.

Huntsman nominated Palin at the convention because he was the only person who had ever heard of her. They met once at a Western Governors meeting in Denver. Somebody had to introduce her.
