INDEPENDENCE, Iowa -- Newt Gingrich said Monday that he doesn't expect to win tomorrow's Iowa caucuses in a bow to his sinking poll numbers in the state.
The former House Speaker, who led in polls of likely Iowa caucus-goers as recently as early December, sought to lower expectations for his showing tomorrow night.
"I don't think I'm going to win," Gingrich told reporters during a press availability. "If you look at the numbers, that volume of negativity has done enough damage. But on the other hand, if the Des Moines Register was right and 41 percent [are] potentially undecided, who knows what's going to happen."
"Whatever I do tomorrow night will be a victory because I'm still standing," he added, noting that this is the second time he has had to fight after many political observers had written off Gingrich's campaign last summer after the majority of his staff quit
Gingrich has been pummeled by negative ads over the past month that have taken a toll on his political fortunes in Iowa. The NBC Newst-Marist poll released on Friday found that he had slid to fifth place among likely caucus-goers.
As for how badly he wanted to win, Gingrich said his desire to come out on top tomorrow didn't surpass personal items like his family.
"No, of course I don't want it more than anything," he said.
Gingrich also announced that he will be caucusing tomorrow night at the Blackhawk County caucus super site, a popular destination for caucus-goers where thousands of Iowans are expected to be in attendance. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, who was born in nearby Waterloo, will also be speaking at that particular caucus site, as will Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

Newt Gingrich has the knowledge and proven leadership to get Us out of this mess that the Democrats have given us. Admittedly he has some personal baggage, which shouldn't be relevant, but it is to those who are in it for themselves.
It is sad to see so many people can't see that the man with answers to problems is getting beat down by a nice hair cut!
@Devdoc12able: Do you just feel really really sorry that he's lowering expectations, now? Or do you know ANYTHING about his past?
It kinda sounds like you don't know Newt and all the 'fun' he had (and problems he created) as a congressman, and later as a lobbyist.
Actually I know alot, alot more than the liberal talking points that you got off MSLSD. I know he balanced the budget and worked with President Clinton to reform welfare. I know that he understands politics and history.
I don't care about him cheating on his wife 17 years ago. And the 400 charges that the democrats came at him with in the 90's, because they were scared to death of him, were all thrown out except one bogus campaign money issue.
He was not and has not ever been a lobbyist.
Next?
I don't think I can win in Iowa
Newt, that's the FIRST honest thing you have said since you started the race.
Is now a good time to tell Devdoc12able that Newt balanced the budget by reforming welfare and TAX INCREASES?
Something that current Republicans in Congress simply refuse to consider, even though the star of the party, Ronald Reagan,(who had 11 tax increases) did so in order to offset his deficit spending. (and still left office with a debt)
Truth is, President Reagan, the man you all so revere, would be drummed out of the Republican party of today as a left-leaning moderate Republican.
And before you Reps. commence to calling me a liar, go look it up, and see for yourselves...
Kennedy raised the debt ceiling 4 times for a total increase of 5%.
Johnson raised the debt ceiling 7 times for a total increase of 18%.
Nixon raised the debt ceiling 9 times for a total increase of 36%.
Ford raised the debt ceiling 5 times for a total increase of 41%.
Carter raised the debt ceiling 9 times for total increase of 59%.
Reagan raised the debt ceiling 18 times for a total increase of 199%.
George H.W. Bush raised the debt ceiling 9 times for a total increase of 48%.
Clinton raised the debt ceiling 4 times for a total increase of 44%.
George W. Bush raised the debt ceiling 7 times for a total increase of 90%.
Obama has raised the debt ceiling 3 times for a total increase of 26%.
The Republicans make The Obama look good.
Your right Obama's Keynesian economics are the best!
Keynesian economics is all about money flowing freely, one worker supporting another worker. I might go spend some of my paycheck at the grocery store, enabling the store to hire a cashier. If the private sector cannot do this, then the government sector steps in to kind of prime the pump and keep the money flow going. Its probably not the best when the government has to step in, but when corporations are sitting on huge amounts of money and not hiring, what else is there to do? The Depression all over again?
I couldn't have said it any better Sheila. Thanks for proving my point.!!!
Devdoc, Sheila did not prove your point - she disagreed with it buy stating why gov't has to step in sometimes. As usual, GOP/TPers leave out portions of a person's quote so it fits their agenda.
Like most skewed, far right Republicans, devdoc wouldn't mind seeing a depression... as long as a democrat (especially Obama) were in office at the time.
The GOP made a fatal error when they decided to have 16 debates. All of us however have benefited from that GOP mistake . If the GOP had just 3 or 4 debates we might not have become totally sick of Bachman with her grating voice that eventually sounds like fingernails on a chalkboard. We finally were able to figure out that Rick Perry just wants to be President but does not want to do any of the hard work to get there. Perry is the iconic empty suit of politicians. We love to hate Romney but we aren't sure just why yet. Romney may be the only candidate who did not wear out his welcome in the debate-a-thon.
And then we get to Newt; arrogant, narcissistic, vindictive Newt. Sure he has baggage; anyone who has been in DC and made millions on K-Street has a messy portfolio. All of that aside, the one grating attribute of Newt is that he talks down to everyone as though they are students in one of his college classes. When I say to myself "can I listen and trust that bloated windbag for four years" it's an easy hell no.
There is a saying; "familiarity breeds contempt" and thanks to the GOP this wise saying is still true as ever. Sixteen debates has exposed the soft underbelly of these people, especially Newt. Way too much air time for all of them.
And what about Newt's secret weapon, Callista; what a piece of work. And, who does her hair? I thought John Boehner had helmet hair. This gal really has the helmet head going.
Hey Newt; good luck in New Hampshire.
Oh the liberal freaks are at it again, attacking anything that challenges their messiah.
OMG = Obama Must Go.
Do you think the Obama cult members would support him no matter what? I mean if he were caught with a hooker doing coke? Would they support him still? If he were caught stealing from the treasury would they still support him?
I think alot would!
Hmmm...the last time I checked, the American people standing behind their democratically elected President was called "patriotism". I guess when you have your head in the toilet of FOX "news", the idea of patriotism becomes obliterated...and then you find yourself defending Newt Gingrich with lies...because his real record looks nothing at all like what he's been saying about himself on FOX for the last 7 or 8 years....
You have my pity devdoc. It can't be easy to live with yourself after being completely duped.
But the democrats really don't have anything negative to worry about with the president at a personal level. I imagine the opposing party has looked that closet over thoroughly, and all they could ever come up with is the birth certificate thing, which finally, one hopes, has been put to rest.
Hey Sharktard, you were missing the entire point. You liberal freaks will defend the community organizer with anything... The most liberal progressive President is way over his head and you liberals with your head in youer %^&%^ are not seeing that. He can do no wrong under your ideology...
Maybe you missed Shockeds point, the office of the President of the United States should command at least a modicum of respect from the citizens. No matter which party, the people spoke at the ballot box.
Yeah Sheila, like you liberal tards gave Bush respect.
That's all you have GB? In regards to an article about Newt himself saying he's not going to win, you babble away about "liberal freaks" worshipping a community organizer??
Grow up, GB. You are only making youself out to look like a spoiled little 5 year old girl that has had her dolly taken away.
Shocktard, i was not defending Newt at all, I know that is hard for you to understand. Again, you are not understanding the point due to your blindness to your messiah.
GB has a point. How to you support the war, torture and economic disaster of the Bush Administration? And, there are people who could never support a black man in the white house.
Devdoc- First of all you will never see Obama with a hooker doing coke, or stealing from the treasury.
Those are delusional Republican pipe dreams.
Amazing. At least three of you liberal wackos said yes to those questions!! There ya go America the liberal agenda. Support Barack Obama no matter what he does!!
Devdoc
Sheila, Shocked and Ted are ALL correct!
The best you RWNJ's can come up with is the birth certificate!
Delusional Republican pipe dreams!
LOL
Yeah, but look at all the babes you have met along the way. It was definitely worth it!
Ahhh the Presidential nomination circus, it's one of the most entertaining shows in town.
Newt is a LOSER and everybody knows it. The voters turned him out. He and Donald Trump should be brothers their egos are so big. Blow hard nothings!
Gingrich: 'I don't think I'm going to win' in Iowa"
Maybe he knows something we do.
No value comment's!!!!arrrggh
How can he realize he isn't going to win when Michelle Bachmann continues to believe she will?
Michelle is just grabbing all the money and media attention she can while the getting is good. She and Palin have a lot in common.
The only people supporting Newt should be dems that want to reassure BO's reelection.
The only people more delusional than Newt are his supporters.
Just amazing ! With all the media support of Gingrich and attacks on Ron Paul, Newt can not even win in Iowa. The Republican Party, if they do not want Obama (who represents the 1% ), better start supporting Ron Paul. Newt can save a lot of money and aggrevation to himself by quitting now. Same goes for Romney. Either one is not even a match for Obama ( Obama is a master of b.s. ) , but Ron Paul ,I believe , can be our next president easily if the Republican Party is smart enough. If they want Obama instead of Ron Paul ,they will get him.
So Newt says "I don't think I'm going to win in Iowa".
Well there you have it America; Newt Gingrich has finally had his first Lucid moment.
Come on Fig you couln't beat a drum
From what I read...I definitely see Obama to win re-elect... If the readers here feels we have a great bunch of GOP...
Just because Newt has a lot of baggage and probably has made some bad decisions along the way will just mean he is just like everyone else...I know I've made bad decisions as well...one thing you can say about Newt...he is a leader...not someone to preach "hope" with no agenda...which is all the GOP has currently...
No, Newt. Merciless corporate greed has replaced maudlin southern religious manipulation. But the wonderful GOP continues to make its impact.
Dear Newt...You said something, that might help you here: Go home, take a bath, and get a job.
What is all of the fixation on wanting to be seen as a Reagan Republican. Gingrich, Bachman and even Palin want people to think of them as a Reagan Repub. He was president so long ago that people who might vote this year are unable able to make a connection. The whole concept gets no traction.
More confusing: recently, Rudy Gulliani suggested that there would be a whole block of Democrats that would shift over to vote for Newt just like the Reagan-Demos did years ago. This is just total nonsense. A little math on that concept tells you that most of the Reagan-Demos probably died of old age or if they still vote, they may have seen the folly of their ways. I don't hear anyone suggesting that there are Nixon-Demos that will come to the rescue. In fact, I haven't heard Nixon's name mentioned at all in this campaign. I'm sure it's just a coincidental oversight.
I heard Reagan's son - Ron on Hardball one day... He said his father was not the man they are trying to make him out to be. Reagan actually had high taxes on corporations and he would never have put up with a "do nothing" Congress. I believe that if the tables where flipped that Obama would not put up with a "do nothing Democrat" because they have given in sooo much this past year just to keep our Nation above water. Obama and a straight Dem ticket 2012.
In other news, Captain E.J. Smith of the RMS Titanic:
"Turn off the ice machine in the galley, boys. Because I think we're going to have more ice than we need real soon now."
Maybe he's doing this intentionally to get the undecided to vote for him. "If you don't want me to lose then make sure to vote for me" Strategic!!!
As for how badly he wanted to win, Gingrich said his desire to come out on top tomorrow didn't surpass personal items like his family (or breakfast at Tiffany's)..
Is this the same Newt who arrogantly proclaimed that he would be the Republican nominee last month?
Newt forgot one HUGE problem when he decided to run for the nomination... his record.
Truth and reality are indeed a beyotch, aren't they Newt?
Hey Neut.....why do you think you would win Iowa? Wake up man! You're an idiot!!!
I'd pay to see Newt vs. Obama in a debate.
Obama wouldn't have a chance against Newt in a debate.
Very doubtful Leona!
LOL
What? Newt didn't have a chance to get to a debate. He was just one of the herd. Mooooooo
All Obama would have to do, Leona, is ask why a good conservative would oversee a doubling of pork barrell spending during his stint as speaker, why would he go after Clinton for screwing around, when he was doing it at the same time, ask him about his $500,000 line of credit at Tiffanys, and how about that cool $1.6 million from Freddie Mac?
You see Leona, it's one thing to say Newt is smart enough to take on Obama in a debate.
But in reality, he's not smart enough to figure out that his past actions as a politician and private citizen would come back home to roost. Hell, he didn't have to spend all that money,I could've told him he wasn't going to make it... for free.
But I guess he'll take what's left of the campaign money you've all donated to him, and perhaps pay down whatever debt he still owes Tiffanys, or maybe set it aside for his next fling...
I really do feel sorry for all you conservatives...
You're more focused on who can beat Obama, rather than what solutions they offer to solve Americas problems.
But then again, a lack of offering solutions is nothing new is it?
I think Obama said YES to a debate but Grampa Gringrich didn't fill out the papers. Ops....again!
Obama would hold his own very well... Newt lives in another world and not in reality......
Leona
Do you want Newt to get a public spanking like the Don did from Obama?
Leona, please get off the meth habit and get into a recovery program before you make any more addled comments.
SILVERBACK: "You're more focused on who can beat Obama, rather than what solutions they offer to solve Americas problems"
If Obama did the job of leading the country, worked with both sides to find solutions to the problems, then we wouldn't be so "focused on who can beat Obama" !!!!!!!!!
I never vote for 4 more years of failure and neither should YOU !
