Gingrich: 'I don't think I'm going to win' in Iowa

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa -- Newt Gingrich said Monday that he doesn't expect to win tomorrow's Iowa caucuses in a bow to his sinking poll numbers in the state.

The former House Speaker, who led in polls of likely Iowa caucus-goers as recently as early December, sought to lower expectations for his showing tomorrow night.

"I don't think I'm going to win," Gingrich told reporters during a press availability. "If you look at the numbers, that volume of negativity has done enough damage. But on the other hand, if the Des Moines Register was right and 41 percent [are] potentially undecided, who knows what's going to happen."

"Whatever I do tomorrow night will be a victory because I'm still standing," he added, noting that this is the second time he has had to fight after many political observers had written off Gingrich's campaign last summer after the majority of his staff quit

Gingrich has been pummeled by negative ads over the past month that have taken a toll on his political fortunes in Iowa. The NBC Newst-Marist poll released on Friday found that he had slid to fifth place among likely caucus-goers.

As for how badly he wanted to win, Gingrich said his desire to come out on top tomorrow didn't surpass personal items like his family.

"No, of course I don't want it more than anything," he said.

Gingrich also announced that he will be caucusing tomorrow night at the Blackhawk County caucus super site, a popular destination for caucus-goers where thousands of Iowans are expected to be in attendance. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, who was born in nearby Waterloo, will also be speaking at that particular caucus site, as will Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

Newt, I think on one hand it was brilliant of you to realize you are going to lose in Iowa. Really you don't need to be a rocket scientist to see that; but in your case since you are so dull with repeating the RWNJ talking points; it is a remarkable deduction. On the hand, it is stupid of you to think you will get anything from voters apart from a few chocolates you get in the Chocolate Factories you visit; "Zany"!!!

the GreenGrinch just shot his campaign in the gut nationally. all anybody else needs to do to blunt Gingrich anyplace, at any time, is get close in the polls, and he whines into his corner for the rest of the day. if he can find a copy of his "30 power words" from 79-80, it can't help him now.

I don't know why he is so angry at losing, not to mention he now instantaneously erupts into tears over this loss. He never started this campaign to be president. He only entered into the race line his pockets with donations and to enhance his book tour. If you are serious about a campaign, you do not run off on a trip to the Greek Isles in the middle of the effort.

"Newt Gingrich made between $1.6 million and $1.8 million in consulting fees from two contracts with mortgage company Freddie Mac,"

They have to work a long time to make that much money ........

Newt the Goof has gotten a big helping of GOP negativity and a money tsunami to sink his leaky dingy. His self proclamation of "I believe I will be the GOP nominee" doesn't seem to be coming to pass, like his load of baggage would be overlooked. Its time to exit the stage Newt before the hook is deployed. Thanks for the comic relief.

It's not swiftboating if you are telling the truth about him.

Newt only wanted to run a "clean" campaign because he knows once the mudslinging started he would be buried in an avalance due to his complete lack of morals, ethics, patriotism and fidelity. With newt it's always been newt first and screw anyone who gets in the way and that includes the American people. If elected he would sell us out the first chance he got as his reptilian stepford wife made off with the White House silver. Newt is the 2nd most corrupt mant to run for the office of president, the first being Bush who drove us off a cliff and then looted the treasury on his way out the door.

The sheeple of the US cant seem to see that the Republican party is ran by con men who just claim to be "good christians". Bachman is an insane "lawyer" who went to Pat Robertsons wing nut "university" and studied biblical law and couldnt tell the truth to save her life, Perry is associated with a cult who is secreatly trying to create a one world government, the new apostolic reformation. Romeny is the member of a cult, the mormons, whose leader looked into a top hat till he had visions of lots of money and many wives and also wants to create a one world mormon government where the church gets 10%of your income and makes you wear blessed underware. Romeny made his fortune laying off american workers and shipping their jobs to china. Santorum is dangerous, he has threatened to exterminate all liberals more than once, he does not believe liberals, progressives, democrates, atheists, gays, lesbians, mexicans, indians, black or any other non WASP has any rights. Huntsman is Romney Lite, and follows the same cult. Did I miss anyone, Oh yeah, Ron Paul who the republican puppet masters will never let get elected because he would end their criminal enterprise. Want a joke.

@The14ugh!ngm@n...........Obama did try to close Gitmo and transfer the prisoners to a secured prison facility in Illinois which is already built and ready for occupancy. The State of Illinois was ready to sell the facility to the Federal government but both the House GOP and the Senate GOP refused to even bring this proposal up for a vote. A President cannot spend funds on his own without congressional action.

Hmmm? I suspect anything any of them say is calculated in political terms. Newt may have expressed a reality based on the polls, but that reality alone would have not necessarily led to his admission.

However, now that he has acknowledged it, he may claim a big victory if he manages to finish in the top four. Lower than that and he'll blame it all on Romney and Paul.

Note: The only reason ANY of these candidates will withdraw (or have withdrawn), is lack of money. As long as they have the money to run, they'll keep running, for the general publicity if nothing else.

It doesn't sound as if Republican voters are turned on by their choices this year, and my question is, if Republicans feel this way, why would they think Independents like them any better? I'm sure die-hard Republicans will vote for Romney, come the general election, but why would anyone else?

So the inventor of personal political attacks and modern-day negative advertising whines about being damaged by personal political attacks and negative advertising? Newt Gingrich's surge collapsed because Republican voters realized their mistake and did not want to relive the sordid era when Gingrich was last a national figure of prominence. Newt's own record and total incompetence took care of his campaign. The attacks from rivals were just the icing on this cake... http://www.sunstateactivist.org
