Stumping for Romney in Iowa, Christie returns the favor

With just four days left until the Jan. 3 caucuses, Mitt Romney and Ron Paul are running neck and neck, with Romney at 23 percent among likely caucus-goers and Paul at 21 percent, according to an NBC/Marist poll. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Stumping for Mitt Romney in Eastern Iowa today, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie described his own uphill election battle in 2009, and how Romney's support -- when Christie faced long odds -- is one of the reasons he now supports the former Massachusetts governor.

"He came down, he worked for me. He campaigned for me. And more than anything else, he was a resource and a friend at a time when nobody in this country knew who I was -- and half the people in New Jersey didn't know who I was yet," Christie said.

"And those are the kind of friends that you remember, because they're the people who aren't there for the fame or for the glory. They're there because he believed in me and what I was doing and what I was talking about."

Christie, whose campaign also received $6,800 in donations from Romney's Free and Strong America PAC, said this afternoon he was "thrilled" to return the favor for the man he now vociferously backs.

"He was willing to travel to New Jersey a number of times and put his name next to mine, at a time when his name, you know, was, as it is today, the most important thing he has. It's his reputation, and he put that on the line for me," Christie said. "So I'm thrilled to be here today to put my reputation on the line for him, with all of you."

Christie isn't the only recipient of Romney's financial help who's now backing the former Massachusetts governor. South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who endorsed Romney earlier this month, received $62,00 from various Romney-affiliated PACs and several campaign appearances by Romney. (However, the most impactful endorsement Haley received during her primary campaign was from former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.)

Chris Christie as a prosecutor put away thugs like Tony Soprano.

Soprano was clearly a New Jersey Democrat, who fit in quite well as part of the Democratic 'coalition' of union thugs and Wall Street thieves like Jon Corzine.

You can have the consolation of making lame fat jokes about Christie for 4 years if he is selected as VP.

Christie's brother Tod was one of those "Wall Street thieves" who was under investigation. He was just lucky enough to get a sweetheart deal from the federal prosecutor. Think his brother, the former federal prosecutor, may have had something to do with that?

carrot top still has her wig on too tight... Romney will wipe the floor with obama in any debate.... heck...

My political prediction for 2012 (based on absolutely no inside information): Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden swap places. Biden becomes Secretary of State — a position he’s apparently coveted for years. And Hillary Clinton, Vice President.

So the Democratic ticket for 2012 is Obama-Clinton.

Why do I say this? Because Obama needs to stir the passions and enthusiasms of a Democratic base that’s been disillusioned with his cave-ins to regressive Republicans. Hillary Clinton on the ticket can do that.

Moreover, the economy won’t be in superb shape in the months leading up to Election Day. Indeed, if the European debt crisis grows worse and if China’s economy continues to slow, there’s a better than even chance we’ll be back in a recession. Clinton would help deflect attention from the bad economy and put it on foreign policy, where at least she has shined.

Emily Miller of The Washington Times reports that Obama plans to violate the $1 trillion omnibus spending bill he signed on Friday. Instead,he issued a signing statement that he and Eric Holder’s Justice Department believe the bill is “subject to well-founded constitutional objections.”

What are they? That Congress has asked to be notified if U.S. troops are placed under foreign command. It does not ban the practice of placing U.S. troops under foreign generals; it simply requires that Congress be notified beforehand. Yet Obama whines the bill he signed “disallows the expenditure of funds ‘for any United Nations peacekeeping mission that will involve United States Armed Forces under the command or operational control of a foreign national,” unless my military advisers have advised that such an involvement is in the national interest, and unless I have made the same recommendation to the Congress.

Placing U.S. troops under foreign command has been controversial for decades —and had been unthinkable for more than 100 years after the ratification of the Constitution. Then-Congressman Doug Bereuter, R-Nebraska, said on the House floor in 1995,“There is a serious question whether foreign command can ever be constitutional.”Even those on the Right who would allow the possibility do so only under limited circumstances. Liberals in the Justice Department have argued for the president’s unlimited use of the military, under UN command, just as long. Evidently this president views Congressmen asking him for notification when he is violating their war-making powers beyond the pale.

No matter what obama pulls out of his hat, it will be Romney left standing... no one wants what obama wants!

How was that Bob? Childish, snarky, accurate and fun I think. BTW I was thinking of going with Humpty Dumpty instead of Lumpy, what do you think, did I go with the right one? I take a little pride in my childish snark, and would value your constructive criticism.

Ben, Clinton would never share the ballot with the guy from Kenya! Nice hypothesis though! Clinton is light years ahead of Obama in what it takes to run the country.... she can negotiate effectively with both sides of the aisle... BO is too thin skinned to ever get the job done! And Michelle wants too many vacations... :)! I do like Chris Christie... he will do whatever it takes, Obama will take whatever vacation it takes!

Well thanks Bob, but I was not covering for Fiesty, she can defend herself just fine.

Childish, snarky and insults comes from both sides and I consider it a big part of the fun on a blog like this. I can't be super serious all the time, I can be pretty mean to the political candidates or their ideas, and I certainly tweak a poster now and then, but as long as we don't get to personal with that stuff, I think it is fun. I do try to do it in a way that is not a flat out personal attack on another poster, but as I said before it is easy to get carried away, as we are passionate about our politics and positions, and due to the anonymity of a blog. To those who have felt I have crossed that line and personally insulted them I apologize. I definitely intend to tweak a little at times but it is not my conscious intention to insult people, and hopefully when I do tweak someone they can see a little humor in it as well. In any event it comes from both sides and some of the stronger players from both sides (like yourself and Fiesty and others) that have been here for years have some healthy rivalries going, but I want to believe, and I do believe, that they truly have no ill will for each other. But hey what the hell do I know I'm just a communist, Marxist, socialist, freeloading, lazy, lefty, bleeding heart liberal.

Watching the Klown Kar Krisscross Iowa, has brought some much needed Comic Relief to America, since Stewart & Colbert are Off till the New Year.

I havta admit that Brett Bair of FOX has been the Only member of the Carnival Barkers(formerly known as the MSM)to challenge Romney at this point in the process.Chucky T riding around in the Clown Mobiles across Iowa has served noone but himself, as if his Head needed to expand any further. Andrea Mitchell(as noted on another thread)is nothing but a Shill for the GOP, pretending to be a TV Moderator. The MSNBC part of the 4th Estate has lost thier way & I don't see them finding IT anytime soon.

As for Gov. Christie, his head is like Chucky T's, it does'nt need to swell any further either. All that needs to be said about Christie is he's a "Protoge of Karl Rove". Enough said!

As we Weeble out of 2011, & Wobble into 2012, may I say:

If he thinks 2009 was a struggle, wait until he runs for reelection. His bullying, everyone-but-me-is-stupid attitude got old really fast. His own party within the State is not too thrilled with him either, as he hung some of them out to dry in this year's elections while he ran around the country on his national ego trip tour.

"Romulian Romney" picked up "Creepy Christie" in his Romulian Bird Of Prey. Together they can spew about tax cuts for the very rich, and no financial regulations for Wall Street Bankers/Investors. The "Romulian" will brag about his connections to his good friends on Wall Street. "Romulian Romney" will laugh about his "flip-flopping," and think it clever. Now it is very important to keep the GOP Elephant. AKA. "Creepy Christie" well fed so he does not have another "Creepy Christie Comment." All Doughnut Shops be on the look out for a huge GOP Elephant stomping around looking for more fried food to eat. The "Romulian" does not have any intention of helping the Middle Class, the Working Poor, the elderly, and the disabled. It is not shocking at all to read "Romulian Romney's" Economic Policies to understand that the top 1% will do very well. Hey! Hey! Ho! Ho! The party of NO has got to go!! Well Iowa it will be time to pick a GOP Clown of your choice.

Nope. Don't think they ever did. The Klingons and the Feds enjoy an uneasy alliance, but as far as I know the Romulans never kissed and made up with the UFP.

There is no question that Mitt Romney has the backing of the GOP establishment and all of the Washington types that have been running this country into the ground for decades. Odds are, however, that no voter -- Republican, Democrat or independent -- will give a rat's behind about what Chris Christie is force-feeding them about Mitt. Romney is a distant corporate operator, a cold and calculating man of the executive suite. He thinks we're going to be impressed by what Chris Christie has to say. Not exactly... http://www.sunstateactivist.org
