Romney takes the high road as Christie targets Obama

WEST DES MOINES, IOWA -- Undeterred by the cold or by a steady drizzle, some 600 Iowans came out this morning to hear Mitt Romney, along with his surrogate and enforcer, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, rally the troops before Tuesday's Iowa caucus begins the 2012 primary campaign in earnest.

Romney, as he has done all week in Iowa, set the stakes for 2012 high, telling the crowd the race was not about just changing occupants of the oval office, but also about "saving the soul of America."

No one wages that fight better than Christie, said Romney; the New Jersey governor returned the favor.

"As we always do every four years, America's watching Iowa and Iowa's gonna be, gonna be the folks who are gonna help to start this process to get us going to make sure that the Republican Party nominates the very best person to take on President Obama in November," Christie told the shivering crowd. "Now when you look at that stage in these debates, I think you've gotta come to the conclusion I've come to: there is no person better qualified by his experience and his character to take on Barack Obama and to lead the United States of America than Gov. Mitt Romney"

Christie also jokingly warned the crowd that there would be consequences if they did not support Romney at Tuesday's caucuses. Christie said that he would return to Iowa "Jersey Style," a statement with different, but equally terrifying meaning, to fans of "The Sopranos" and "Jersey Shore" alike.

And while Romney largely focused his message today on sweeping patriotic themes and his own "business guy" credentials, the pugnacious New Jersey governor made certain to dispense some harsh words for President Obama in his closing thought.

"President Barack Obama came out to Iowa three years ago and he talked to you about hope and change.  Well let me tell you, after three years of Obama, we are hopeless and changeless and we need Mitt Romney to bring us back, to bring America back," Christie said.

Oh, great, Republican leaders are having to resort to threats to get Iowans to vote for Romney. "I'm going to make you an offer you cannot refuse...vote for Romney or I'll fill your car with pigs' knuckles."

Any more Christie jokes and yo'll be sleeping with the fishes.

On a lighter note I have no idea what the attraction of Jersey Shore is. Does anybody out there watch and can explain it's popularity? (I have the same feeling about the Kardashians and other "reality" TV)

I don't know, Amy.....as Garrett Haake says above, he could have been referring to the "equally terrifying" idea of sending out the cast of "Jersey Shore". Like Iowa hasn't suffered enough already.....

But hey, I'm glad to hear Romney has a pet "surrogate and enforcer" to do his dirty work for him. Love Christie or hate him, at least he sticks to his guns. I've seen jellyfish at the Jersey shore that have more of a backbone than Romney. And striped bass on a charter boat fish hook that don't flip and flop as much. Not to mention seaweed with more charisma......

(Sorry, Alan.....these aren't Christie jokes, they're Romney jokes, okay? And no - I can't explain it either. I don't have cable for good reason!)

Christie is smart, he's going to wait until 2016 and the open seat.

Pat Boston MA., Obama went to Harvard Law School and knows about as much about blue-collar workers as Warren Buffet and anyone who thinks otherwise can buy some oceanfront property I have in Arizona. Why does everything come back to race? Obama is rich and hateful, why does he have to be a white guy for you to call him so? Who other than the group you're referring to vacation on Marths's Vineyard? Were you purposely excluding Obama and if so for what reason? What about Herman Cain, he's rich, seems quite hateful and not very white?

And speaking of ridiculous race related comments, Eric-913730, it wouldn't matter if Obama was white, orange, purple or green, he's a terrible leader, has no concrete plans just vague idealistic speeches and has more than doubled any previous deficit in this country's history in each and every year of his Presidency! So yes, anyone but Obama in the White House would at least give us a chance at something better instead of more of the same wasteful spending, lack of leadership and direction, etc. and it has absolutely nothing to do with the color of his skin!

This may play well in Jersey--but in the rest of the country--not so much! He wants to be president some day--and if he thinks that bullying and being rude to his constituency is the way to do it, he may find himself with the short end of the stick. Can you imagine him acting like a bully on the world stage? Yuck!

The Left has far and away a better sense of humor than the Right. We yuck it up all the time at how incredibly insane the Right is. "You won't believe what they're doing now!" That kind of thing. But our laughter is tempered by the knowledge that the Right is insane. Not to mention stupid. So our laughter sometimes has the kine of hollow ring that you hear when people are watching a scary movie.

You know, I could have said, he looks like a baked doughboy, nice and golden brown. I also could have said, he looks like Mr Hanky from a comedy show I watch. But he's not as brown as Mr Hanky and doesn't live in a sewer. Oops I said it.

                      Happy New Year!

No appreciable difference between Romney and Obama, both quasi socialists.

If those are my choices, I'll vote for Ralph Nader again.

Ignore the presidential race and concentrate on electing enough real republicans so that Obanma can't borrow and spend.

                      I agree 100% with phinephancy!

People toss around the label "socialist" and "quasi-socialist" without comprehending what "Socialism" actually IS. But it has a negative connotation and the main objective is to demonize and de-humanize anyone who's ideology doesn't align with the extreme right.

President Obama is NOTHING like a socialist and has continued many of President Bush's policies. President Obama is closer to Ronald Regan than to anything "socialist". President Obama is a pragmatist. I do wish he were a better figure head type leader to rally around, but that's not his style.

On Governor Christie, like him or not, he calls BS when he sees it. His comments in Iowa were a pretty lame attempt at what passes for humor in Jersey. That whole "tough guy" persona seems to permeate my home state. I don't agree with Gov. Christie's policies or some of his decisions, but have a new found respect for the man after his appointment of a Muslim, Judge Sohail Mohammed.

Our income have gone up by a few percentage points and the rich have gone up over 300% yeah I can see why you would vote republican. All right, I have to admit it--I look at The Situation because I enjoy looking at young men with superb muscle development (God bless you, ESPN!). Shallow, very shallow, and I keep the sound down so the neighbors don't suspect...

But dirty old ladies need scenery, too.

Sad that the current crop of GOP candidates don't have much to offer, though Romney does keep fit, Huntsman ditto, and Dr. Paul was likely quite the hunk some decades ago, he has aged well.

Alas, they would all get voted off the island (save for Ron Paul, nobody is going to dump a good physician) in any decent reality show.

And they would all get beat by that basketball player in the White House.

Interesting comment, Joseph. And I cannot understand how any "thinking" American would vote against their own self interests and elect any one of the current crop of "Conservatives".

Notice I didn't write "Republican" there? None of the current candidates represent true Republican ideals. You can thank Newt Gingrich and Carl Rove for hijacking our Republican party and turning it into something completely unrecognizable.

Not a libbie, nor a righteous righty, just try to be intellectually honest, look at facts. Bottom line, the frickin guy is fat and if he was not such a lightning rod, he would not get all the "fat" commentary. Moral of story: he keeps mouth shut, he'd be thinner and attract a lot less negative commentary.

But Joe, remember? The right is the bastion of personal responsibility. Never would they engage in sloth nor gluttony nor greed nor depravity. Christie is just the fat little kid that got picked last for the dodgeball game trying to play mister toughguy. A typical Republican trait.

Willard's biggest contributor = Goldman Sachs.

Scotty -- What is your point? Consider this: According to Federal Election Commission figures compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics, Goldman Sachs' political action committee and individual contributors who listed the company as their employer donated $994,795 during 2007 and 2008 to Obama's presidential campaign, the second-highest contribution from a company PAC and company employees.

Well, in for a penny - in for a pound: the Palin / Bachmann ticket will need a hairdresser; who better than Trump? Nobody can work a comb-over like The Donald. For head of their social media campaign, who better than Anthony Weiner. And just in case there is a talent competition; if he's not too busy bribing Congressclowns, they could get Larry Craig for tap dancing lessons.

James, well the theme here seems to be making fun of fat people, and Michelle must have come to mind. (Or is it Moochelle??)

Couldn't contain yourself. Typical, do gooder , righteous rhetoric. Don't, don't and then they turn around and do it themselves. From tone of comments we went from Christie to fat people...nothing personal here I hope. Oh, as an aside, Christie did not get that fat by working his ass off and if it makes you feel better actually heard from an insider that he really is not that fat, just a big wind bag.

I doubt that many people know much about Christie's values, except some political types living in New Jersey. We've all seen a handful of video clips of him, and that's about all. The most popular by far is the clip in which a caller asked why Christie sent his kids to a private school while public schools were deteriorating. I suspect most of us remember his angry response: "You know what? That's none of your business."

Very appealing -- a man who isn't afraid to speak his outrage in public, a man intent on preserving his privacy, a man who resents a suggestion of elitism.

Yet, you know what? When it comes down to it, he never answered the question. He simply responded rudely and avoided any explanation. The question wasn't posed as a challenge. It wasn't shouted. It was a reasonable query. And, after all, he IS the governor of the state and responsible to his constituents for an explanation of his public practices. What IS he doing to help the schools that everyone else sends their children to?

Instead, so far, most of us have applauded him for his pugnaciousness, his willingness to verbally punch people, to speak aggressively like anyone else on the street, and to do it all with a lack of grace.

He could, of course, have simply said he sends his children to a private school because he can afford it and the caller can't, and the public schools are dangerous and falling apart and he's done nothing about it.

If he becomes a candidate for national office, he'll be vetted by the press, and we can expect the usual outcries of "bias in the Mainstream Media!" But let's do it anyway.

Remember Mitt, corporations are people too. So, your corporation fired many people and sent jobs over overseas. That's real nice of you.
