NBC poll: Mitt Romney, Ron Paul neck-and-neck in Iowa; Newt Gingrich in 5th

In the past two weeks, support has fallen sharply in Iowa for Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich. NBC's Chuck Todd reports.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Rep. Ron Paul are running neck-and-neck in Iowa, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum is surging and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich collapsing just four days before the state's Jan. 3 caucuses, according to a new NBC News-Marist poll.

Romney drew the support of 23 percent of likely caucus-goers in Iowa – identified based on interest, chance of voting and past participation – ahead of Paul, at 21 percent.

They are followed by Santorum at 15 percent, Texas Gov. Rick Perry at 14 percent, Gingrich at 13 percent and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann at 6 percent.

The Republican presidential hopefuls are in high gear with just days left until the Iowa caucuses. NBC's Peter Alexander reports.

The poll numbers, which are similar to those published in a recent CNN/Time survey, represent a reversal of fortune for Gingrich, as well as an improvement for Santorum and (to a lesser extent) Perry. The NBC-Marist poll conducted in late November had Gingrich in the lead among likely caucus-goers at 28 percent, Romney and Paul tied at 19 percent, Perry at 10 percent, Bachmann at 7 percent and Santorum at 6 percent.

“More than half of [Gingrich’s] support has evaporated,” said Lee Miringoff, the director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion, which conducted the survey.

Negative advertising hits Gingrich 'on the chin'
Miringoff adds that the millions of dollars in negative TV ads targeting Gingrich – from a pro-Romney Super PAC and the Paul campaign – have played a major role in this erosion, with 35 percent of likely caucus-goers now saying he’d be unacceptable as the GOP’s nominee. That’s a 19-point increase from last month.

"The fight I'm in with Romney is exactly the fight that Reagan was in with the establishment in '80," GOP presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich tells NBC's Chuck Todd in a one-on-one interview.

What’s more, only 6 percent in the survey identify Gingrich as the “true conservative” in the Republican contest.

“He took it on the chin,” Miringoff says of the negative advertising campaign, which has questioned Gingrich’s conservative credentials and tied him to Washington.

Splintered Tea Party support
Although just 7 percent of likely Iowa caucus-goers believe that Romney is the true conservative in the GOP field, he has two variables working in his favor, according to the poll. One, only 21 percent of likely caucus-goers say he’s unacceptable as the Republican nominee (compared with 35 percent for Gingrich and 41 percent for Paul).

And two, the conservative vote appears to be splintering between the various candidates, and is no longer coalescing around a single Romney challenger.

The wild card in this race has been and continues to be Ron Paul, the Libertarian who has a growing following inside the Republican Party. NBC's Chuck Todd has more.

Last month, Gingrich had a large lead over Romney (and the other GOP rivals) among Tea Party supporters.

But in this new poll, Tea Party supporters – who make up about half of all likely caucus-goers – are divided.

Santorum gets 20 percent from them, Romney and Paul 17 percent, Gingrich 16 percent, Perry 15 percent and Bachmann 10 percent.

“This is the Romney dream scenario,” Miringoff says. “When you look at the Tea Party and conservatives, they are all splintered.”

Obama’s approval rating ticks up in Iowa
The poll also shows an improvement in President Barack Obama’s approval rating in Iowa.

Forty-five percent of registered voters in the state approve of him, while 43 percent disapprove.

Last month, those numbers were upside down, with 43 approving and 46 disapproving.

Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum vaults past Newt Gingrich and into third place in the GOP presidential race in Iowa, according to a new poll. Santorum talks to TODAY's Savannah Guthrie about the surge, his conservative values and why he can beat Barack Obama in the general election.

The Iowa NBC-Marist survey was conducted Dec. 27-28 of 2,905 registered voters (margin of error of plus-minus 1.8 percentage points) and of 433 likely GOP caucus-goers (plus-minus 4.7 percentage points).

Also, unlike the recent CNN-Time poll, the likely voter model in the NBC-Marist survey included independents and a few Democrats, and it measured some respondents by cell phone.

Anyone who can beat Obama! We can do without one less multi-million dollar vacation at our expense. Here with are with an economy as bad as it is and Obama and fam with entourages in Hawaii instead of at the White House where we're paying him to be. That makes 2 Christmas Hawaii vacations in the last 3 years at our expense. He has a lot of gall to do this a year out before the election.

The day this country can't afford for their president to go home for the holidays, we might as well pack it in.

Well -- when you have no REAL ideas about how to solve REAL problems you talk about vacations, birth certificates -- insane things like that.

You didn`t read what I said. Ron Paul would beat Obama. He is old but not crazy. It is funny how a man these days that follows the U.S. Constitution is considered crazy. It goes to show you those endless negative rants by the media have paid off.

        Obama is making America poor
Food stamp use rises to record 45.8 million

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Nearly 15% of the U.S. population relied on food stamps according to the United States Department of Agriculture.

The number of Americans using the government's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) -- more commonly referred to as food stamps -- shot to an all-time high of 45.8 million in May, the USDA reported. That's up 12% from a year ago, and 34% higher than two years ago.

The program provides monthly benefits to low-income individuals and families, which they can use at stores that accept SNAP benefits.

To qualify for food stamps, an individual's income can't exceed $1,174 a month or $14,088 a year -- an amount that is 130% of the national poverty level.

The average food stamp benefit was $133.80 per person and $283.65 per household in May.

The highest concentration of food stamp users were in California, Florida, New York and Texas -- where more than 3 million residents in each state received food stamps in May.

The rise in food stamp use comes as the U.S. job market continues to sputter, and food prices across the country climb.

Paul's foreign policy is off but he will not be allowed to unilaterally remove our troops from other countries. We Americans will see to it that it does not happen and Congress will pitch a fit before it would ever happen. Go home mitt. Nobody trusts you!

Hmmm... Apparently the voters of Iowa have a very short memory. We have already had at least one president with the onset of dementia or Alzheimer's - Reagan. He was 69 when elected, and was about 78 when he left office. His last two or three years in office showed the signs of mental trouble.

Ron Paul is 76 years old. (August 20, 1935) He looks 90. The risk of RON PAUL experiencing debilitating health issues or death in the next five years is very high, if not extremely high.

It is very embarrassing to realize the Republican Party cannot find better candidates. The present gaggle of presidential wannabes is pathetic.

Report: Nearly Half Of Detroiters Can’t Read

DETROIT (WWJ) – According to a new report, 47 percent of Detroiters are ”functionally illiterate.” The alarming new statistics were released by the Detroit Regional Workforce Fund on Wednesday.

WWJ Newsradio 950 spoke with the Fund’s Director, Karen Tyler-Ruiz, who explained exactly what this means.

“Not able to fill out basic forms, for getting a job — those types of basic everyday (things). Reading a prescription; what’s on the bottle, how many you should take… just your basic everyday tasks,” she said.

“I don’t really know how they get by, but they do. Are they getting by well? Well, that’s another question,” Tyler-Ruiz said.

Some of the Detroit suburbs also have high numbers of functionally illiterate: 34 percent in Pontiac and 24 percent in Southfield.

“For other major urban areas, we are a little bit on the high side… We compare, slightly higher, to Washington D.C.’s urban population, in certain ZIP codes in Washington D.C. and in Cleveland,” she said.

Tyler-Ruiz said only 10 percent of those who can’t read have gotten any help to resolve it.

This is great. I have been wondering about why Whites are racists, and no other race is.....

                      Proud to be White

                      Michael Richards makes his point.............
Michael Richards better known as Kramer from TVs Seinfeld does make a good point.

This was his defense speech in court after making racial comments in his comedy act. He makes some very interesting points...

Someone finally said it.. How many are actually paying attention to this? There are African Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian Americans, Arab Americans, etc..

And then there are just Americans. You pass me on the street and sneer in my direction. You call me 'White boy,' 'Cracker,' 'Honkey,' 'Whitey,' 'Caveman'... and that's OK.

But when I call you, @!$%#, Kike, Towel head, Sand-@!$%#, Camel Jockey, Beaner, Gook, or Chink .. You call me a racist.

You say that whites commit a lot of violence against you... so why are the ghettos the most dangerous places to live?

You have the United Negro College Fund. You have Martin Luther King Day.

You have Black History Month. You have Cesar Chavez Day.

You have Yom Hashoah. You have Ma'uled Al-Nabi.

You have the NAACP. You have BET.. If we had WET (White Entertainment Television), we'd be racists. If we had a White Pride Day, you would call us racists.

If we had White History Month, we'd be racists.

If we had any organization for only whites to 'advance' OUR lives, we'd be racists.

We have a Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, a Black Chamber of Commerce, and then we just have the plain Chamber of Commerce. Wonder who pays for that??

A white woman could not be in the Miss Black American pageant, but any color can be in the Miss America pageant.

If we had a college fund that only gave white students scholarships... You know we'd be racists.

There are over 60 openly proclaimed Black Colleges in the US Yet if there were 'White colleges', that would be a racist college.

In the Million Man March, you believed that you were marching for your race and rights... If we marched for our race and rights, you would call us racists.

You are proud to be black, brown, yellow and orange, and you're not afraid to announce it. But when we announce our white pride, you call us racists..

You rob us, carjack us, and shoot at us. But, when a white police officer shoots a black gang member or beats up a black drug dealer running from the law and posing a threat to society, you call him a racist.

We don't need Romney or Paul. When the NTSB said that all cell phone use by drivers to include hands free need to be banned Paul opened his mouth saying such a ban would be unconstitutional. I guess he is in favor of more people dying because a driver is having a phone conversation and missing traffic signs and killing and maiming innocent people. A few days ago a cop almost T-boned my vehicle because he was talking on his phone and not observing the stop sign. Every time I go out of town I am run off the road by people who are talking on their Bluetooth instead of driving their vehicle. I don't know much about Santorum but he may be an option. I would prefer in May of next year Donald Trump running. I would vote for him. All the clowns in office today need to be voted out with the exception of the few that are truly trying to do things for the people.

I am proud... But you call me a racist.

Why is it that only whites can be racists??

I saw a segment on NBC news yesterday where people off the street were asked about who they were going to vote for. One women stated she wanted to vote for Michelle Bachman but did not think she will win, so she is going to vote for Mitt Romney instead. That one statement she made kind of shows what is wrong with this country. Why would you vote for someone you don't want to win?

Because removing Obama is what matters most. He has shown he does not know what to do. Therefore, he cannot fix the economy. We must give someone else a chance to correct it.

The wheels are being set in motion. Obama knows he will not be re-elected just because of the stagnant economy, and his political beliefs that prevent him from taking action. This next year will be one of the hardest economically that we will have to face. Obama's threat to Iran will certainly result in a small action that will dramatically raise gas prices much to the delight of the environmentalist. Unemployment will begin to rise again with companies once again cutting costs. The new Republican president will look at a far worse mess than Obama was looking at when he took over. Yet, he will roll up his sleeves and get to work changing unfavorable job legislation. We will not hear its Obama's fault one time. No one is going to care whose fault any of it is. The mantra will be who is going fix it? The past is water under the bridge and history cannot be changed honestly. We must move forward, and so has Obama who signed legislation last week that will certainly raise electric charges and spur more lay-offs. Americans are going to be forced to work together, and hard work is what it will take to restore our nation. We will have people with college degrees shoveling dirt. Hang on because it is going to be a rough one people.

I too have a 401K and it is now a small fortune larger than it was in 2008. To get it here, since 2008 I'd invested a large fortune in it so I'm not sure I call this progress.

IMO Bush was a bonehead when it comes to economic policy. I will grant you that Obama is somewhat less of a bonehead. But we don't need a lesser bonehead, we need someone who knows how to create jobs that pay a living wage. Claiming a reduction in job loss because all the jobs are already gone isn't really the type of victory I was looking for. Claiming growth because non-living wage jobs are projected to grow in 2012 while living wage jobs continue to be exported isn't the type of growth I was looking for.

Looking forward it again seems we need to pick the lesser of several boneheads none of which IMO have a plan to create living wage jobs in America. At least Dr. Paul has a plan to reduce the cost of this farce we call a federal gvt. which may reduce the number of Americans falling below the poverty line and requiring assistance.

                            Some questions for Paul Supporters:

Iran starts blasting tankers in the Straights of Hormuz - What does President Paul do?

Kentucky State legislature passes a law that allows resturants to refuse to serve Minorities - What does President Paul do?

Iowa makes abortion a criminal offense (including sentences/fines) - What does President Paul Do?

Arizona passes a law that can only be enforced using Racial Profiling - What does President Paul do?

Alabama passes a law that states Minorites are not allowed to vote - What does President Paul do?

Got a few more - but answering these questions might settle things a bit in my mind.

I think he would be presidential and make a decision, unlike the current boob that waffles until someone tells him what to do.

First off, Ron Paul is not running against God. Dr. Paul is running against Mr. Romney so your questions need to be asked in the context of what the other candidates would do.

What would Mr. Obama do if Iran blasted tankers in the Straits of Hormuz? Well so far he has only given them the empty finger wag which looks worse than doing nothing. What has Obama done about the Pirates in Ethiopia? What happened to Libya when Mr. Obama helped unhorse Mo? And IMO Mr. Romney would be all over charging taxpayers (even non-drivers) to defend corporate tankers in Hormuz. IMO tankers in Hormuz is a cost of doing business and needs to be absorbed by gas prices; if gas prices are too high then those impacted need to voice their desire for a diplomatic solution, not a military one (though as Capone said "You get more with a gun and a smile then just a smile").

State laws in conflict w/Federal laws are a Judicial issue, not an executive one and Dr. Paul is running for President, not the Supreme Court. But what has Obama done about the AZ and AL laws that encourage racial profiling? What would Romney do?

Dr. Paul is far from my ideal choice. But he is light years ahead of the other viable choices we have IMO.

Do you happen to have any Dr. Paul questions that are realistic? or is this the "run for cover hour"?
