Perry slams surging Santorum as a 'prolific earmarker'

WASHINGTON, Iowa -- In his first targeted attack against the recently surging Rick Santorum, Rick Perry on Thursday labeled the former Pennsylvania senator a "prolific earmarker" who "loaded up on Pennsylvania pork" during his time in Congress.

Appearing at a coffee shop in Washington, IA, the Texas governor took direct aim at his rival's spending record less than 24 hours after a new TIME/CNN/ORC Iowa poll showed Santorum jumping into third place, with Perry stalled at fifth among GOP contenders.

"Rick Santorum is a friend," he said. "I've got great respect for him, but when he talks about fiscal conservativism every now and then it kinda leaves me scratching my head, because he was a prolific earmarker."

"You know I love Iowa pork but I hate Washington pork," Perry said to laughter from the crowd of about 50. "And Sen. Santorum, he loaded up his bills with Pennsylvania pork. And he even voted for the Alaska Bridge to Nowhere."

Perry then read a quote from a Santorum appearance on Fox News in February 2009 in which the former senator said "I'm very proud of all of my earmarks... I will defend earmarks."

"Senator Santorum I'm going to give you that opportunity to defend your earmarks," Perry added. "Because earmarks are the gateway drug to the spending problem that they have in Washington DC."

A radio ad echoing the same critique hit Iowa airwaves this morning, according to the campaign.

While Perry previously has lumped Santorum with other candidates whose tenure in Washington make them 'insiders," today's attack is the first shot directed squarely at him alone.

The news of Perry's continued idling in Iowa polls yesterday raises further questions about whether or not the Texas governor will push on to South Carolina after the caucuses.

Asked by a reporter today if there's any caucus night scenario in which Perry doesn't continue the race, he responded "Well that's God's will. There might be an outcome that He decides that I wouldn't go on"

"Is God caucusing?" came the followup.

Perry, smiling, replied, "I'm pretty sure He will be.

It seems Perry wants to slam anyone that gets in his way. If he were smart, he'd just give it up. Perry doesn't stand a chance to climb to the top of the pile.

Perry doesn't stand a chance, not because of his poor debating skills, but his debating skills are poor because he lacks knowledge, critical thinking skills, possibly outright IQ. But my first thought was why bother with Santorum? Everyone should be attacking Romney. My second thought was earmarks is all ya got?

Maybe Perry is a Democratic Party plant, ala the Manchurian Candidate. Michele Bachmann might have been trained in a secret San Francisco lab at the same time - loved her Newt Romney jab on how they both backed healthcare mandates before they attacked Obamacare as "socialism."

"Rick Perry on Wednesday labeled the former Pennsylvania senator a "prolific earmarker" who "loaded up on Pennsylvania pork" during his time in Congress."

Hey, Rick - it's not "Pennsylvania pork", it's scrapple. And if you'd ever had it, (thin sliced and crispy, of course) you'd load up on it too. Pass the ketchup!

True Patriot: "Everyone should be attacking Romney".

Works for me - it'll make for some great squirming when they all eventually have to endorse him in a few months.....

TrusPatriot-

Perry is a smart guy- you don't get to be a Governor without being smart. He's just not knowledgeable about national and international issues, so he comes off looking clueless at times.

He may be just running a "feeler" campaign like Huntsman is doing. JH is not serious this time around- he's planting seeds for the next time. Perry may be doing the same.

What REALLY bothers me about Perry is that he used to be a flaming Liberal Democrat! How does one switch that dramatically? I don't trust it...

Hey Lloyd, want to know to REAL reason why Perry is still the Texas governor? Its because PEOPLE KNOW HIS NAME! I live in the lone star state, and the last time I checked, his approval rating was a mere 25%! If Perry is still in when the Texas primary comes around, expect a landslide to anyone else. And if he somehow makes it to the general elections, expect Texas to turn blue.

As a Senator from Pennsylvania, it was his job to do what he could for Pennsylvania. If earmarks are an accepted practice, there is no reason he shouldn't have taken advantage of them for Pennsylvania. Earmarks shouldn't be a part of the political process, but they are. If that's all Perry's got, he should just bail out now with whatever little dignity he has left.

When Texas was dealing with massive wildfires last year, wasn't it Rick Perry who complained about the lack of of assistance from the Federal Governent (begging for more $$$)....WHILE Federal Funds were being spent in Texas to put out the blazes? Was he just mad because he had no control over the spending and couldn't give huge grants to cronies? The same cronies who feed $$$ back into his campaign fund? It's nice to see Republicans themselves pointing out the hypocrisy behind the right-wings' "core values." Basically, Republicans say one thing and do another, if it's not denouncing goverment spending while pursuing pork in all it's forms, it's cheating on their wives while claiming to live by their "faith."

Why do you keep bringing up that man's infidelity? That was many years ago and he asked the Lord to forgive him. Who are you to judge a man's morals. We all are raised differently; some things my parents tolerated that maybe yours would not and vice versa. Besides are you going to hold probably 90% of the men in this country to the same standard? All men lust and have done something probably not in the best interest of their vows at some point in their life. If they say they haven't; they are a lie.

You can live by your faith but yet fall short.

There are just as many Democrat POLITICIANS that say one thing and do just the opposite. A politician is a politician and ALL will do whatever is needed to garner votes. If a politician isn't slanted; he/she is the one that will be on the losing end. It is a sad truth.

Inthemiddle, TX Read the Bible, When one ask for forgiveness the Lord said you are forgiven, Go now and sin no more. Do you really think Newt did that. I think not. He left his first wife when she got sick, he left her for a younger woman. Then when she got sick he left her also for a younger woman. He Cheated in love and life, He was kicked out of congress. He has been from one fraud to another. That's why people that know him call him out all the time. To many people don't know about him that should. That is what this process is all about.

I'm with you- they asked for forgiveness- they got it- who are we to question?

Chuck- with Gingrich- he didn't ask the Lord until he was married to Calista- AFTER Congress- so those that harp on about his first wife- it's irrelevant. His actions are a gauge but not the end all, be all for a person's character- he is probably a changed man- time will tell. Being a Grandfather does something to you- makes you more in touch with reality and makes you want to make others proud. I see that in Newt.

That's the only thing I envy about Liberals....It's impossible for them to be hypocrits at anything because you can't be a hypocrite when you have no core values to begin with. Wow. That sure is admirable, isn't it? "You can't condemn us when our favorite candidate is knocking up a groupie while his wife is dying, because we've never come out and said we're against such things." Wow again. And you people act so smug about it when you should be friggin' ashamed of yourselves.

Think back to your grandparents time...Do you people think they would be proud of you and the candidates you support? Would they be proud of the way you all have done everything possible to tear down the values and morals that they practiced, and that made this country great?

Would they be proud that, because of liberals, the out of wedlock birthrate has soared in the last few decades? That drugs are now commonplace in our society? That filthy music, movies and TV (all made by Hollywood liberals) now infect and poison our society.

Would your grandparents be proud that you kneel down to a man who sees nothing wrong with being friends with America-hating terrorists and jerkoff fake preachers who hate America, Jews, whites etc...?

On behalf of your grandparents, I'm hocking up a great big loogey and spitting it into the eye of you disgraceful, socialist, anti-American halfwits.

Why do you keep bringing up that man's infidelity?

Because character is important. Infidelity / adultery is indicia of immorality. Immorality is indicia that my politician can be corrupted. Trickle down didn't work then, and has never worked. That doesn't keep those that are incapable of critical thinking from supporting it.

And to add something to comment #6.3 - Thu Dec 29, 2011 3:18 PM EST, Reagan was already in the early stages of Alzheimer's Disease when he took office. We know that now, but he was rewarded for his 'folksy' charm and his B movie acting skills. He gets credit for 'fixing' the economy, but if you look at the numbers, we were already in recovery when he took office. He killed that and sent the US into a second double dip recession, and soon had to sign the biggest tax increase in history.

I lived through three of his administrations - one as California Governor, where he did the same thing as he did to the US - inherit a nice budget surplus and trash it, and leave with massive debt and deficit. Why people choose to remember him as anything but a doddering old fool is beyond me.

Rick Perry acts too much like that arrogant Bush clan that amounts to little more than the Hatfields. If Republicans can do no better than dragging the gutters of Texas to find a candidate for President, O'Bama won't have to spend a cent to get a second term. With what the Republicans have to pick from, Dick Nixon looks pretty damn good. Nixon in 2012, death is no excuse!

There is no problem with that. The Presidents always have to pay for their own food and lodgeing while on vacation.

Devil's Son - I used to call Reagan the Great Vacationer. This was before you could look up statitistics like that.

"So far, President Obama has taken 61 vacation days after 31 months in office. At this point in their presidencies, George W. Bush had spent 180 days at his ranch where his staff often joined him for meetings. And Ronald Reagan had taken 112 vacation days at his ranch.

Among recent presidents, Bill Clinton took the least time off -- 28 days."

So, in order, at the 31 month mark:

              Reagan took 3.5 months off
              Clinton took 1 month off
              Junior took 6 months off
              Obama took 2 months off

Rick Perry is so stupid. He doesn't even know that Canada is a foreign country. For Example, his recent statement on the Keystone Pipeline. Build it so we no longer have to rely on FOREIGN oil. DUH!!!

Alan, not only that but he/they don't know that all oil is sold on the international market so that oil whether considered foreign or not, will not necessarily go to the US.

Also, although I can't stand any of the republicans running, I think that this is BS. Actually in general, I think that the talk about earmarks is total BS. Part of the job of Congress people is to secure federal funds for their districts/states. The problem is when they attach these things to non related bills as a way to get what they want, basically holding other bills hostage unless they get what they want. Both sides do this but until the last couple of years it wasn't so prominent. Now the republicans actually brag about hostage taking.

Born and raised in Texas. Perry is the worst governor we have ever had (and I'm 60 years old so I've seen a lot of governors). And, yes, I'll even include GWB in that (because he didn't really do anything at all). When Perry declared he was running for President I was actually glad. He is such a crook. For some reason he gets a pass by the press here in Texas. But I knew the national media would bring so much to light. Hopefully now the folks here will vote him out. Unfortunately, traditionally if you can get 17% of the registered voters in the state to vote for you you will win. I'm just hoping enough people finally realize just how bad he is now.

I think it is safe to say that nobody will have to tolerate this kind of stupidity for long. When he gets back to Texas with his tail between his legs, he better have his cronies set him up with some kind of job, because when he comes up for re-election, he'll get smoked like a cheap cigar.

Romney will, if elected, move the seat of executive government to Wall Street. That will put him in direct contact with his constituency on a daily basis. His residence will be on Fifth Avenue and will be called the "White Penthouse". The plan is called The 1% Solution. The White House Presidential Museum may then occupy the historic building at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. in Washington and will create up to 46 jobs.

Rick Perry is from Texas and the only reason Texas is a state at all is the Alamo didn't have a back door. Nothing but hookers and cowards living in Texas. (except for Austin which is the only place in the state where any sanity is allowed to exist)

                  teabaggersux,

I was agreeing with most of your posts until this one.

I am a native Texan and am Not a coward or a hooker. Nor am I a Teabagger or a Republican. No need to insult us all, just because GW Bush and Rick Perry are idiots.

You were sounding somewhat intelligent before stating that EVERY person living in a very large state fit into 1 of 2 categories. That statement cannot possibly be accurate.

If you would like to salvage any respect for your own intelligence, you might want to modify and correct that statement, and us intelligent folks will consider that you made an honest mistake.... Otherwise, you lose a HUGE amount of credibility.
