If you buy the new CNN/Time poll and the other anecdotal evidence of growing crowds and newfound swagger, Mitt Romney is on the verge of winning next week's Iowa caucuses.
And he could do it with the same percentage -- 25% -- that gave him a second-place finish in Iowa four years ago.
If that happens, it would mean that Romney -- who supported abortion rights just six years ago, who enacted an individual health-care mandate in Massachusetts, and who raised revenues to balance his state's budget -- would be thisclose to wrapping up his party's presidential nomination.
So why are his GOP presidential rivals attacking each other and not Romney?
Consider some of today's activity:
-- Rick Perry is up with a new TV ad hitting Bachmann, Gingrich, Paul, and Santorum for their current or previous service in Congress. But it makes no mention of Romney.
-- Perry, while campaigning in Iowa today, called Santorum a "prolific earmarker" who "voted for the Bridge to Nowhere" and "loaded up on Pennsylvania pork," per NBC's Carrie Dann.
-- And Jon Huntsman's campaign has a new web video hitting Paul for those racially charged newsletters.
And this all raises the point we raised in First Thoughts this morning: Romney can win Iowa with just 25% if his rivals split up the other 75%.

For a second there I thought the headline read; unscaled...
Come to think of it, that might be more accurate.
Willard does resemble a dying fish flopping around gasping for breath!
Where oh where is Grama Grizzly when you need her - she could put an end to his misery with a single WHACK!
Then we could wrap him up in some newspaper and send him to Karl Rove!
Capich? (sp?)
There are just as many incriminating things that could be used against Romney like the video of Gingrich and Pelosi used against Gingrich. I suspect this isn't happening because of establishment pressure (Karl Rove/Crossroads) as you point out Feisty.
Let them have Romney. I'm still not going to vote for someone who believes in modern prophets and revelation, wearing special underwear, baptism of the dead, and all the other outrageous beliefs of the Mormon church -- They still believe in polygamy in that men don't have to dissolve their temple marriages when they get a civil divorce, but women can only be married in the temple to one man.
If you want to know why Romney is such a flip-flopper, just look at the LDS church and positions about marriage, blacks, the word of wisdom, and you name it. They rewrite doctrine all the time. So to me it's no wonder that Romney does the same thing. All religion requires a leap of faith (i.e., loss of rational thinking, e.g., Perry, Bachmann, Santorum), but anyone who can make that large of a leap in faith is not fit to be POTUS and leader of the free world.
Romney would be a good candidate. I think alot of the 1st time "Novelty Voters" who came out in '08 would like to vote for someone with better leadership experience than what they elected. The OWS crowd will likley rally the poverty lobby against Obama in 2012. It's obvious from the 2010 election that Americans had enough of Obama's rhetoric and failed policies.....
TO: UAW Pleeeeeeeease who wrote:
We certainly do NOT want the Republicans back! Republicans are STILL in denial, and have yet to regain their memory of the 8 years they had the White House.
President Obama will win in a landslide.
American Girl, Would you vote for a better presidential candidate than Obama, from the Deomcratic side of the isle?
Funny thing, Mitt Romney is only able to draw 25% of Republican votes and since only 36% of Americans say they are Republican, that means that less than 10% of Americans like Mitt Romney......
Oh, yeah, with such an underwhelming show of support, Mitt Romney is well on his way to being President........... of his homeowners association, maybe, if he brings snacks to the meeting.
dirp101-
where did you learn math? To my calculations- it looks like 25% of ther party does like him, only 10% does not. They will come around if he's chosen. Romney appeals to the indie's & moderate Dems as well- which is where the battle will be won.
Obama is toast.
Where did you learn math Lloyd? percentages are out of 100%, not 35, like your calculations are showing.
Happy Days are here again
That Romney guy is gonna win
and the GOP is stuck with him
Happy days are here again!
Oh Happy Days are here again
The Pre-si-dent is gonna win
Despite the fact Karl Rove will spin
Happy Days are here again.
Yeah! Happy Days are here again!
Not even MASSIVE GOP voter fraud can knock this train off the track. Read 'em and weep boys. Romney is going to be the GOP Nominee and Obama is going to get re-elected.
Obama/Biden 2012
Lets see, no matter who the republican candidate is, the president will not...
Have the young vote, (hows that hope and change working out for ya Barry?)
Have anywhere near as many black voters as last time, (how's that race baitin workin out for ya Barry?)
Have the independents, (hows those foreign military excursions workin out for ya Barry?)
Have as many moderate democrats. (hows that healthcare mandate workin out for ya Barry?)
Looks like depending on who the republicans nominate it will be either a tight Obama loss or a landslide republican win. (although certain republican candidates would assure an Obama win, mittney anyone?)
The Republicans go nowhere without Ron Paul's Army of voters.
The wrost ticket in voting history would be PALLIN & ROMNEY two of the most stupidest people on earth. He is an idiot!
One poll shows Mittens ahead of Obama by 9 points. Newt is even with Obama.
Amazing how you libbies continue to support Obama. Can't wait to hear him defend his record during the primary.
UAW, you tickle me. Mitt, all things to all people, would make a better President than the one we have? Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeee...........I would have to say that none absolutely none of the candidates I've seen under the big tent would be able to organize a piss up in a brewery. Not a single original thought. Old rhetoric meant to calm the voters that only vote for the same tired old party. Retention of the status quo as though if we steady the course long enough we will somehow emerge as the Biggest and the Best.....We are going to have to enter the 21st Century. We are going to have to re-invent ourselves. We are going to have to be a nation amongst nations. This country wasn't founded on equality. It is a continuation of a struggle. So, pick any one of the cast on offer....not one of them is a real candidate but a fill in till the election is over and done. We can then get on with building an America that includes everyone.
ravenwhirechapel
Two of the most stupidest......did you finish high school?
Gilroy- if 100% is the entire population that votes and 35% are Republicans- and 25% of that entire population as Republicans state they will support Romney, that leaves 10% of the entire population as republicans that still do not support Romney.
Further- 20% of the entire population state they are Democrats- the rest: 45% are either Independents or subscribe to another party all together.
Now, let's add this up: 25% + 10% + 20% + 45% = 100%
See- the math really isn't all that hard...
I could have stated it as almost 73% of all Republicans support Romney and almost 27% do not, so I understand where you are getting your math on this.
In any math though- Obama will have a hard time getting past the 45% mark. He needs more that 50% of all the Independents to vote for him- and they don't support him any longer.
So what are the Paulies going to do when Romney gets the nomination??? He is nothing like their guy.
lmao .. They are not attacking romney because they all need to get it down to a 2 person race. Romney's backers are not moving. When the hard right wingnuts get down to 1 candidate, than they will take on Romney. Unfortunately, backmann and some of the other empty heads are not going to leave the race because their is too much money to be made in book deals and easy fundraising. I mean, who doesn't want to fly around the country partying everyweekend and get a few extra bucks wink wink to "enhance" their connections with the rich and make some side business deals. That's why when people go to congress with the only the shirts on their back, they come out multi millionaires. BTW obama is a multi millionaire now. I guess he should now claim his 1% throne.
@Kritt
If Dr. Paul doesn't win the nomination, us "Paulies" will be voting for Ron Paul anyway. Whether it is on a 3rd party ticket or a write in.
While I am leaning to say that Mitt has the nomination locked up, I still have to wait and see what SC does. If Mitt comes out of Iowa a winner (NH should be his) then he will not fly under the radar much longer. The other candidates will have to address him head on, but it might be a little too late for them to make up ground. SC will be the litmus test for Mitt IMO.
"Romney goes unscathed (so far)"
because the other dingbats are clowns! I, for one, am tired of hearing about the clown issues. Let's start talking serious issues. I'm hoping Romney will debate Obama and there will be serious talk, not more clown talk...
How is that going to happen when Obama will be involved?
Presidential debates minus teabagging hypocrites = potential for serious talk.
Net gain for all america!!!
I agree with you NewtPiggy, we should be talking about the MOST serious of all issues. I'll give you a hint, it's not Iran... That's right the soon to be $17 TRILLION debt. I know Ron Paul has a plan. What kind of plan does anybody else have??? Oh, that's right, cutting a little around the edges and hoping for change.
A child could debate with obama and win.......it does not take much!!!!
Ron Paul won't be there. Who are his supporters going to vote for when Romney becomes the nominee??
Mitt Romney could very well win the Republican nomination by default, the recipient of some very good luck in the form of a gaggle of very bad and very radical GOP competitors. Romney is the only GOP candidate that appears both sane and has the organization necessary to win a long primary fight. That does not make him a strong general election candidate, however. His visceral unpopularity with the conservative base and his inability to connect with fellow human beings on a personal level, not to mention his past history in laying off thousands of working Americans for his own profit, will doom his bid against Obama. http://www.sunstateactivist.org
Good summary, and all true.
mattpfl, you got it all correct 100%.
Are you serious. Obama has lost millions of jobs on his watch. Lied to the American people about his policies. The most inept administration since that other loser Carter and corrupt to boot.
Couple that with the fact next year is not projected to be a banner year and it adds up to fired.
You may not pay attention but the ones who will decide the election are. Guess what? They have given up on Obama.
During a recent national interview, President Obama rated himself as the 4th best President ever. The arrogance of the man. This same fellow holds the record in his administration for:
And now he wants another $T?
You people make me laugh......Obama is not special in anyway yet you fawn all over him. i know about 75 percent of the world are idiots and they are all on the left!
winemaker--- We are in a recession not a depression and O has been in for 3 years --so is it fair to blame him for an entire decade of a bad economy?
Also you do know that Congress has blocked his jobs bills several times don't you?? Thought so.
I agree with a lot of what you say but this isn't true. While I think he has an uphill battle, the conservative base will vote for him in the general election because they have no other choice. They certainly will not be voting for Obama.
He can't connect on a personal level but, how important is that really? Candidates aren't really connecting with anyone on a personal level - it's all a show at the end of the day. Is it better to elect a president because his image connects with people, or is better to focus on the actual platform? Ill take the latter - democrat, republican or otherwise. I can connect with my friends and family if I need that much personal attention. Right now I just want a leader in office who can whip Congress into shape.
To be honest, I don't have much faith in Romney or Obama. We are all voting for what we personally feel is the lesser of two evils.
kritt,
IfI recall correctly, Obama is the President, and the buck stops with his leadership.
How's that last summer of recovery doing for ya? Or all of those other slogans from his administration? Are they working?
As for Congress blocking bills, you mean those spending programs where we are using Chinese money for? How about those loan repayments.....
And when do you believe Harry Reid will introduce any Republican proposals, or even establish a budget for the nation? And if Obama is reelected, will the taxes be increased to pay for his spending programs or will he borrow more money to pay for them?
No matter who is elected, his administration created a big hole for future Presidents to fill.
..HE IS STILL " CREEPY UNCLE MITT "..! ...And no one wants him ! Most people go with their gut feelings ...and a huge red flag is always present ..the min i see him !
Say it isn't so-- Again, just two words: Freud, transference.
Maybe they saw this?
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/elections/election_2012/election_2012_presidential_election/2012_presidential_matchups
Oops. Things don't look so good for the Big O.
Hahhahaaaaaa.
A Rassmussen poll??? Isn't that the poll that uses just republicans as their samples for polling data?
Isn't Rassmussen the same poll that showed McCain/Palin within their margin of error of beating Obama in the historic 2008 landslide???
Nice try. But keep bah-lieving.
Puh-lease
A minor blip on a flat line compared to '72, '80 & '84
I love the way the democrats always try to claim a mandate. (when they very rarely have one)
The biggest landslide elections always historically happen when you have an unpopular president and a disgruntled middle american electorate.
The next question? why are they usually republican landslides? (and, not electoral college landslides, real voter landslides) can you say Puh-lease!!!
Didn't GWB claim a mandate with barely under 51%?
Gilroy97,
No he didn't.....
Mandates are very rare in presidential politics in this country...
It's possible that until someone gets consistently closer to Romney in the polls, they won't go after him because they don't want to kill his reputation for the general election.
..
Liberals call Romney a "flip flopper" .........Let's review the facts on who's the real "flip-flopper"......
Obama said it's bad for the country to raise the debt ceiling when Bush wanted to do it, and what is Obama doing right now?????
Obama wanted "to rise above the Party politics" and as soon as he got elected and the healthcare debacle started , he told John McCain........ " John , the election is over, I WON."
Obama wanted to close GITMO and berated Bush on that point, then decided it should stay open.
Are the gays even happy with Obama ? The list goes on...........
Leona- Don't forget it was Obama's continuation of Bush policies that had led to the foreign policy victories the libs are now championing!
Not only is GITMO still in business, enemy combatants are continued to be held indefinitely, predator strikes continue in Pakistan without the consent of the Pakistani gov't, Bush's anti-terror policies continue to reap victories in the war on terror, enemies of the US continue to be terminated abroad without the knowledge of US allies (Pakistan and Osama Bin Laden), and Obama continues to exercise America's military muscle (although Obama "leads from behind"). In the military, they call someone like Obama a "REMF." Look it up.
It is not just liberals who call Romney what he is, a flip flopper. I seem to recall that Bachmann, Paul, Gingrich and Perry all pointing out that Romney is a flip flopper and the would hardly be called liberals.
Doug what the hell do you call Bush, Cheny, Rumsflaid Wolfoitz and so on? REMF.
These are the same clowns who started 2 wars and but American lives at risk. REMF! "bring it on" remember that slogan. With American lives on the line, Bush tells our enemy to kill American solders.
The arrogance, the sheer belligerence is phenomenal!
As for continuing the Bush policies. Bush stopped / closed the group that headed the search for Bin laden. Remember? probably not.
OK Leona, I'll concede the debt ceiling argument.
On healthcare Obama reached out to Republicans numerous times trying to get them on board but they all followed Uncle Rush's orders in trying to make it his "Waterloo." Obama did include a lot a Republican ideas (too damn many of them IMO) and it has been a hoot watching Willard and Salamander Man flop away from their previously held views on this.
On GITMO, he wanted to move the prisoners to US soil only to be foiled by the 'fraidy cat Republicans who somehow think our prisons, while adequate to hold the most dangerous domestic criminals with near 100% security, would somehow leak like sieves and allow terrorsts on the loose here in the USA. There is a perfectly good empty prison in IL that can hold them. How about the Republicans grow a pair, stop cowering under the bed and let them be transfered there?
As for the gays, he did end DADT, promise kept!
Al,
When did President Obama engage the Republicans on Health Care? There was one photo op meeting where he gave them an hour, but didn't provide any platform for discussion.
When were the other occassions?
By the way, loved having dinner at the Vintage Press when we were in Visalia. Great place to dine.
Winemaker, apparently you forgot about all the time Obama spent courting the "Gang of Six Senators which included Grassley, Enzi and Snowe." Of course, all that was an effort by the Republicans to stall until they could gin up the mobs at the town hall meetings that summer. Grassley and Enzi more or less admitted they were not negotiating in good faith. Obama blocked a public option (foolishly IMO) in a vain effort to gain bipartisan support for the individual mandate.
The VP is a great place to eat, have you had a burger at the Habit yet?
Tried the Habit, didn't like it. In & Out much better, but 5Guys is the best! Love those cajin fries!
There was a video that ABC had on line yesterday that went all over the internet with a gentleman talking about what it was like for him and his neighbors to lose their jobs when Romney came to town.
"It was really one of the worst things I think I've had to deal with, because people … were at my desk crying, 'What do I do? I don't have a good college education… I just wanted to get to retirement,'" Johnson recalled in an interview with ABC News. "Families were devastated. In some cases, the husband and the wife both worked there. They lost all their income. It doesn't get much worse than that."
Bain Capital purchased Ampad in 1992, and Ampad purchased the factory where Johnson worked two years later. The new owners began cutting staff and wages at the plant, and raising the cost of health benefits. The unionized workers went on strike. Ultimately, the plant was shuttered and all the employees lost their jobs.
**************************************
Someone somewhere said yesterday - Romney isn't a job creator.
Romney is a job killer and a wealth creator.
What has Romney been doing all these years? Has he been helping/assisting with the economy? He keeps bragging about his work in the private sector creating jobs.
So? What has he been doing since 2007?
Nothing except putting on jeans (lol) about talk about being unemployed like us regular people. And the people buy it?
What about his offshore accounts? How much has that little adventure cost us the taxpayers?
I can't believe people are buying his "complete make over".
Barack Obama v. Romney/Wall Street - 2012.
Speak the truth , for the good of the country. Stop the liberal lies and drivel....
First of all ....Obama took 3/4 of all Goldman Sachs/Wall Street donations in '08. He is beholding to them. That's why Obama bailed out Wall Street/ big banks.
ROMNEY helped create Staples and other companies and thousands of jobs..........That is something the college professor ( Obama) knows NOTHING about.
Time for America to have a real Leader/ Job creator......vote ROMNEY 2012.
Romney / Rubio in 2012 for JOBS JOBS JOBS
Pat - You surely do not do research correctly and follow the bad side only. Not everything is perfect, specially in the economy. He has created many times more the jobs that were lost in the process.
Pat Boston- Stop drinking the Kool Aid! Mitt and Bain Capital are not the evil takeover artists portrayed by the liberal media. Mitt and Bain Capital contributed both capital and management experience to new and existing companies to make them successful and grow. Mitt knows how to create jobs and build value.
Staples went from a small chain to $24.5 billion in revenues and 90,000 employees. Burlington Coat Factory had $2.8 billion in revenues with 28,000 employees. Sports Authority-- $2.5 billion in revenues. I could go on but you get the point. Mitt, through Bain Capital, created wealth and jobs.
As for Ampad, a little research shows that when Bain Capital acquired it in 1992, it had revenues of $9 million. By 1996, it had revenues of $200 million. Yes, Ampad later went through bankruptcy when the economy started tanking but Mitt had left in 1999 to helm the SLC Olympics. Also, you seem to forget that the company was acquired and is still doing business. Some employees lost their jobs but many more still have jobs.
Do you blame Mitt for any layoffs while ignoring the thousands of jobs he helped create? Of course you do. That is what liberals drinking the Kool Aid do. Companies shouldn't be run for the benefit of their owners (the shareholders) who risk their capital. Liberals believe the owners of any company in America are merely stewards for the public good (stakeholders). Imagine the anguish your liberal forefathers/mothers experienced for the farmers facing the displacements of the Industrial Revolution!
Romney can win Iowa with just 25% if his rivals split up the other 75%.
That's is fine for a primary but in my opinion spells trouble for him in the general, the bottom-line nobody can talk honestly about is the fact that the reason people like Santorum, Perry and Bachmann get any traction at all is because of the evangelical Christian base period, and I seriously doubt if you can now tell these people after whipping them into a frenzy for years that they should just be pragmatic and cast a vote against Jesus Christ to elect a Mormon to the presidency. They have been tying their religion to their politics for years, telling these people that they must elect people who will represent their faith and religion through government and now they are going to tell them it's really no big deal to vote for a man that does not believe in Jesus as his lord and savior. They will have to pray heavily for the answer to that problem, and hope Jesus tells them to vote against him. The answer will have to be that it is okay to forsake Jesus, because you know it is just politics, it really has nothing to do with faith and religion, we were kidding about all that. This is why Romney never gets past 25% in Iowa religion does matter in their politics, the republican party has worked hard to insure that it does for many years, and now they suddenly want and need it to not matter to get Romney elected. Either a huge chunk of the republican electorate will have to flip flop on this, or Romney will have to commit the ultimate flip flop and convert to Christianity before next November.
ROMNEY helped create Staples and other companies and thousands of jobs..........That is something the college professor ( Obama) knows NOTHING about.
Time for America to have a real Leader/ Job creator......vote ROMNEY 2012.
Forrest,
Hope you had a Merry Christmas and hope you and your family have a happy and healthy New Year.
I agree with a lot of what you wrote, and I believe the evangelical Christians are a major problem for Romney and most politicians. The Republicans need to get over the social conservative agenda and push the fiscal conservative programs like smaller government, reduced spending, revising the tax codes, cutting waste and fraud, etc.,. Religion really should have no place in politics.
I have said before on several posts, it is hard to beat an incumbent president. I turned 7l years old yesterday and I have only seen two incumbents loose reelection. I believe the Republicans have to, and will, push hard to take control of the Senate and retaining the House, thereby forcing Obama, if he's reelected, to the center and maybe a little to the right, as Clinton was. Since Obama can not run for a third term, no need for constant campaigning, he has nothing to loose and we could maybe see some signs of cooperation and improvement in the economy.
A real leader has a sense of direction, Romney has changed his direction on every single issue, and everybody knows that, he can't even take credit for his own health-care plan, he does not even trust his own leadership. Ha he is no leader, he will, and has said anything and everything, he is easily lead, but not a leader by any stretch of the imagination. Baby Jesus is very skeptical of him, and you know babies have a sixth sense about who they can trust.
Thank you for the well wishes Sargent, I hope you had a Merry Christmas and wish you a Happy New Year. Congratulations on your 71st birthday, Happy Birthday. The republicans have merged their politics with religion so hard and for so long, that it will be problem for them to now promote a non Christian candidate. They have made it hard for many republicans to now disregard everything they have been told and vote for a non believer. Religion and politics are a dangerous mix, the founding fathers understood that. Many republicans are going to have to eat their words in order to promote and then vote for Romney.
Ignorance abounds, mormon's are christians.
Great now all you have to do is convince the Mormons of that, well them and evangelical Christians, and Christians of all persuasions. Do they profess Jesus Christ as their lord and savior, because if they don't it won't cut the mustard with the republican base, ignorance notwithstanding.
@tunanut - The next thing you know you'll be telling us that Muslims are Christians.
Mormons are not Christians, but they have done a very good job at duping the public into believing their lies.
All religions are s h i t.....designed to control and manipulate people and create divisiveness and distrust. So stop the crap with Mormonisn, christianity or islam. Religion has done more destruction than all the natural disasters in the world combined!
So only 25% like him but that means 75% don't like him. What a winning situation. The extremists who adore Bachmann, Perry and Gingrich don't like Romney as he is too far toward the center for them. Huntsman and Santorum are not known well enough to win in Iowa. They may rise but will fall quickly as soon as their skeletons are brought from the closet. They will also be too extreme for main stream Republicans and so what is left but the 25%er Willard Mitt Romney.
What a sick party the once Grand Old Party has become.
Speaking of a "sick Party".....
A.Weiner (D) resigned because he was sexting pics of his "weiner" all over the country.
Barney Frank (D) is retiring because he knows he can't win. He is responsible for the Fannie and Freddie debacle and had a gay prostitution ring in his house.
Nancy Pelosi (D) is guilty of "insider trading" and funneling "green" projects (money pits) to her brother in law .
Rangel (D) and Geitner (D) are tax cheats.....
Holder (D) lied to Congress.
Maxine Waters (D) bailed out her husband's bank with "stimulus" tax dollars.
The list goes on....
Baldeagle11-- Your logic is faulty. While it is true that 25% "like" Romney, the other 75% do not necessarily "not like" him. They may not have a preference or their first choice is someone else. I believe that Romney tops the list of second choice among those polled. Faint praise of course ....
GOP 2012 for jobs jobs jobs.
I could swear they said the exact same thing in 2010!
So where are they?
yes Leona: where are the Repub jobs they promised us?
Jobs Jobs Jobs is what will kill them in this election, they can't pull that again that's what was propelled them to take the House, but they have done nothing to fullfil that promise and everything to stymie any spending on infrastructure that would have helped. They squandered the excellent opportunity they had because they were to afraid to give this president any success so in the process they deprived themselves of any success as well, and the country knows it, that's why Obama's approval numbers are 4x higher than Congress's. They don't buy Mitt's tired old recipe of cut taxes and regulations and people will be hired even though there is no increase in demand for goods and services. Republicans in congress blew a chance to take all three branches, now they have doomed any republican nominee for president. They are the worst Congress in history and many people will take out their frustration with them on the republican candidate for president, not Obama. Welcome to Waterloo!
All the Repub. bills , passed in the House are sitting on Harry Reid's desk. They are DOA because Harry wont bring them to a vote, which is a fact that you should know.
Let's fire Harry so we can get to the people's business.
Romney for jobs jobs jobs.
Not taking a stance on Romney v. Obama here, but I do think it is a great thing for this country that we may see a republican in the general election who is center-leaning. It means the GOP is starting to realize that the religious zealots who have co-opted the party for years are doing more harm than good.
That bodes well for the future of both parties because if they start producing moderate candidates, we can dial back some of the polarization in the country, bring back the notion of compromise and actually get some work done. Imagine that!
Oh, and Ron Paul is just plain out of the question. His policies are unrealistic to say the least.
And the headlines in another article on this site: Romney wants ads on Sesame Street. MSNBC that was very misleading and you are at fault. Once the article is read it only states that we should not be funding that show with tax dollars and I agree, that show makes enough from selling products of the show to fund it themselves.
I'm positive that Mr. Romney is an ok guy, a standard-issue, old-school Republican who wouldn't damage the country (on his own) too much. He has individual flaws, but truthfully, he's much like Mr. Obama. They are both pragmatic and moderate, and they both want to solve problems. They have similar ideas related to health care, defense, education, separation of church and state, and civil rights.
However, the key difference is in their respective environments. Obama has had some excellent support - Bob Gates, Hillary Clinton, Leon Panetta, and others. Those people are also pragmatists, moderates, etc. They align with Mr. Obama's general direction.
Mr. Romney would find his cabinet full of the likes of Eric Cantor (State), Michelle Bachman (Treasury), Herman Cain (Commerce), and Peter King (Defense). None of those people are in line with Mr. Romney's moderate views. They will collectively move our nation far to the right. My belief is that would damage our country beyond recovery.
Here's the truth, not the liberal lies and drivel....
Obama would have the Communist Van Jones around ( he already appointed Van Jones to his cabinet but Obama had to let him go because of the outrage).
Obama would have the terrorist Bill Ayers around him, if he could. They are friends.
Obama would have the Rev. Wright around, whose "church" he sat in for 20 years but "we the people" found out that Rev. Wright spews hate toward our country.
Obama would have George Soros around him because they are both Socialists. Obama takes Soros' money and has had him in the WH.
"My belief is THAT would damage our country beyond recovery."
LEONA: Here's a clue for you. Joseph McCarthy is dead and along with him, the witch trials which the GOP is so fond of. I don't call you a Nazi (though it's probably not too far off the mark) so don't go calling everyone who disagrees with you a Commie.
That was an extremely ugly chapter in our history that ruined the lives of some of our most talented actors and writers. It took the courage of people like Kirk Douglas to name Dalton Trumbo as the real screen writer for the movie Spartacus & Arthur Miller, who wrote The Crucible, to put an end to that evil.
Try just for once, to not demagogue those you disagree with. I know it's tough but I'm confident that somewhere deep down indside you lies just a tiny bit of rationality.
intrepid,
If you read what I wrote, it was in direct response to the comments Madison made about "damage to the country."
I was responding to Madison's "FEAR MONGERING" and "witch trials" .
So, liberals should try to, as you put it, "NOT demagogue."
at least you know who MSDNC wants to win
lol
Matt, everything you said about Romney is true except for the part about losing to Obama. The generic Republican candidate is consistently polling ahead of Obama and eventually the Republicans will settle on a candidate. Historically the incumbent is way ahead in the polls at this time because most Americans aren't paying attention to politics. Instead, Obama is struggling. An incumbent has never been elected with an unemployment rate this high. He'd better hope for a faster jobs recovery next year (not temporary Christmas jobs) or it is over for him.
"The generic Republican candidate is consistently polling ahead of Obama and eventually the Republicans will settle on a candidate."
But generic isn't running and all but a few polls (Rasmussen -- and they're always wrong) show Obama beating Romney. And while it's true than the incumbent has never been elected with an unemployment rate this high, the public still blames Bush for the economy and -- Republicans have no answers other than than tax cuts and deregulation -- they same things that caused this depression in the first place. It is also important to remember than never before has any major party offered such a collection of clowns, idiots, outright crazies and religious fanatics as candidates.

"Let them get a job?" They have jobs, Ricky boy!
I think this is absolutely hilarious! To think a Republican is going to be the presidential nominee by garnering twenty-five percent of voting republicans?
Really?
I have news for Willard and his Republican followers:
You may have gotten by against the likes of Newt Gingrich, Rick Perry, MIchelle Bachman, Ron Paul, and Rick Santorum....
But David Axelrod, Robert Gibbs and the rest of the Obama team are going to point out the flip-flopping and total lack of substance that Republicans appear to be willing to accept.
I'm sure Willard's history of trashing companies and laying off thousands of American workers will come up too.
Enjoy your MINOR LEAGUE victories while you can, Mitt - because you're going to be up against the real deal when it comes to the general election.
Romney is about as stale as week old bread. Unfortunately, the other options are all fruit cake.
I still think it is unlikely that the Republicans will allow a Mormon to win the nomination for president, but I could be wrong. The whole not Obama crowd might actually overcome the not Mitt crowd long enough to get his name on the ticket.
More likely though as this drags on feelings will get hurt and those that don't get the candidate that they want will just stay home and not vote.

Romney is being bypassed because the men behind the curtain (who REALLY run the country) are putting him in the WH next...they're tired of calling the WH for the muslim and being told hes on vacation....JMHO
Everyone seems to forget....whomever is elected President in 2012..will have to work with a VERY dsyfunctional Congress. All these ideas, all these ideals, all these "promises"....can't be done without Congress...the corporate, special interest, wall street, billionnaire owned Congress. Presidential candidates (including current President) can spout all they want....but they have to work with a corrupt Congress...and therefore, most of what they "promise" will NEVER, EVER, EVER get done since it doesn't benefit their owners.
I think the reason that the other GOP candidates aren't zeroing in on Romney too much is that they don't want negative remarks on their record when it's time for him to pick his VP. And BTW, I'm not a Mormon, but I grew up in Michigan while Mitt's dad, George, was the governor, and he did an awfully good job. Like father, like son--I hope!
So it'll be Romney vs. Obama.Well, hello again Mr. Obama....:(
Gary Johnson 2012!
Mitt Romney, a bussiness man as President? As successful as the last business man we had as President, George W. Bush or the business man before him, Jimmy Carter or the business man before him, Herbert Hoover...
The notion that being a "businessman" makes you qualified to be president is absurd. The qualities required to be president are far different than those necessary to succeed in business. And keep in mind that Romney was born to wealth and privilege, went to the best schools, etc. You cannot exactly say that he "pulled himself up by his bootstraps". He may very well be a superb business person but if that is indeed the case itm provides little insight to his skills at governing.
You just described zero-bama in case you don't realize it. A "businessman" is exactly what we need now. The "community organizer" thing didn't seem to work out so well.
