Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman speaks and shakes hands after a town hall in Pelham, N.H., Wednesday.
PELHAM N.H. -- On his first day back on the trail since Christmas, former Utah governor Jon Huntsman stepped far beyond the boundaries of his usually polite stump speech to repeatedly slam Ron Paul as "unelectable" because of "out there" views on foreign policy. Huntsman is the latest candidate to join an intensifying Republican crescendo of criticism of the Texas Congressman as the Iowa caucuses approach.
"He is not electable at the end of the day. Let's be real about it," Huntsman told more than 150 voters at a town hall meeting in southern New Hampshire. "I'm not an isolationist. I don't share the Ron Paul world view. I am a realist."
Paul currently commands a strong second place position in the lead up to the January 3 Iowa contest.
Huntsman dubbed Paul's positions on Iran and American military presence overseas as "out there enough" to be harmful to U.S. national security. With issues like Iran "on the ascent," Huntsman warned Iran would become the "transcendent foreign policy challenge of the decade."
Huntsman didn't stop there. "Things like legalizing drugs -- I just don't think this is a position that is going to sell well," Huntsman told reporters on Wednesday night. "I just don't think he's going to get enough mainstream support to win."
'Make the math work'
When asked by NBC News, Huntsman declined to say whether he would support Paul if he does indeed become GOP nominee, bristling at a hypothetical scenario. Front-runner Mitt Romney has committed to voting for Paul if the latter becomes the Republican party's choice. Gingrich has declared he would not support Paul over disagreement on foreign and domestic policies.
"I'm just making a case for electability," Huntsman said. "You know at the end of the day we've just got to win back some people who actually voted for Barack Obama, just to make the math work. So who at the end of the day is the most electable? I believe I'm the most electable candidate in the race right now."
However, current polls indicate Huntsman has a long uphill battle to win in New Hampshire. He placed a distant fourth place here, the state in which he has centered his campaign efforts. According to a poll by CNN and Time magazine published Wednesday, the former ambassador to China sits at 9 percent of likely Republican support while Romney leads with 44 percent, followed by Paul at 17 percent and Gingrich with 16 percent in the Granite State.
Huntsman -- who until Wednesday night rarely disagreed with his GOP opponents by name -- added that the recently-discovered controversial newsletters published under Paul's name in the 1990s also undercut his legitimacy as a candidate.
"You gotta own up to that history and ultimately he is going to have to explain that to the American people if he wants to get enough support to be a legitimate player," said Huntsman.
Paul recently responded to the newsletters, saying that he was not aware of the content at the time and disavowed the remarks inside his namesake publication.
When asked if Paul's explanation was adequate, Huntsman replied, "Not so far."
Huntsman's long game was also questioned tonight as he kicked off a packed campaign schedule that leads up to January 10 primary. When a voter asked Huntsman about his failure to collect enough signatures to appear on the Virginia primary ballot, he brushed it off.
"I'm not too bothered about that," Huntsman said. "Our philosophy has always been, if we come out of New Hampshire with a head of steam, we're going to well in South Carolina, we're going to do well in Florida, in which case you're going to get the early delegate states who are going to want to be with the most electable candidate."

I guess they are all calling each other something......why not "unelectable"....better than other things...
I think Huntsman knew it was "pile on Ron Paul week" and he might get a headline for a change lol.
He's more fun when he is Romney-bashing.
Who is electable mitt the ball glove?
Ron Paul is the only candidate that is electable. He gets voters from all sides.
Ron Paul 2012
I don't think guys that wear magic undies are electable.
Huntsman, like the rest of the establishment elite, is terrified of Ron Paul. Ignoring him used to work, not any more. It's time for some real change.
Huntsman has the domestic and foreign relations experience to move this country forward in a world-based economy, and in peaceful coexistence with countries like China. He served as ambassador to China, has an adopted Chinese daughter, and an adopted Indian child. He understands what it takes to "get along with" these nations, as well as the impact of those relations on the American economy. He has also worked for Republican AND Democrat administrations - imagine that, a guy from the middle of the road...???
Huntsman is the man to get this country back on track in our changing world. Too bad the media won't even give him the time of day.
Huntsman didn't sign grover's pledge!!!!
There are those who are unelectable because of what they have done, those for their positions, and those for what they are alleged to have done. Paul suffers from all three. What keeps him in the spotlight is his fiscal mantra - which quite a number of people like.
Part of the Democrat playbook is to convince people that the republican field is unelectable. Turns out that's what the radical groups do. It's an embarrasment to watch the Republicans using the same practice, breaking the Ronald Reagan 11th commandment.
YA, the one candidate that isn't a GLOBALIST New World Order puppet like Romney, Perry, Newt.
Still not sure if Paul is for real. He should be preaching not only against the FED but da BANKSTERS. How often doe he mention Goldman Sachs and corrupt insider trading that allowed for Congress to increase their net worth 25% in the last TWO years?
How often does he mention the industrial /mercantile war the Chi-Coms are wagin against us?
As for defense, if he would articulate a little more about withdrawin MAJOR troop concentrations from around teh world, leave air bases and go after individuals dedicasted to attack Americans with extreme prejudice where ever around the world that they are found, and include the realities of Islam today within the world, he'd have a chance.
It's only a matter of time before the ELITES decide for Trump or Paul to run 3rd party for President Obama to win. I hope THEY place Hillary as his VP. Then we can see how long he will live. LOL!
concernedone you are one of the few on these boards that recognizes Huntsman's qualities as a moderate, however unfortunate that may be. He's not extreme enough for those voters on the far right who appear to want blood all the time. He doesn't pander like the rest of the crowded list of candidates do. I still can't get my head around any of the others including Mitt who so far has not shown one iota of what he'd do if he'd become President. His speeches are all the same-same about what Obama has done wrong, but what never what he's going to do. Just a glimpst into his playbook would be nice to help make a decision, but it's likely he doesn't have a plan. This is why Huntsman is appealing, his administration as governor of Utah was excellent as well as his knowledge of China which is going to be important to anyone who becomes President.
If its not Ron Paul, then let it be O'bama. The establishment must go!
Why can't the US become like Switzerland? NEUTRAL in other countries affairs. Nobody attacks Switzerland.
The GOP understands that Paul is their worst nightmare. They'll do anything to keep him out of the lead.
Funny coming from a man polling in the bottom of the bottom tier. Ron Paul is probably the most electable of the GOP candidates because of his broad appeal to the mostly libertarian leaning (fiscal conservative socially moderate even if they aren't declared libertarians or registered in that party) independents. Huntsman not a bad guy, but he's dead wrong on Ron Paul.
For those of you who don't think Dr. Paul can beat Obama...read this article below. His message reaches to all people. If he doesn't get the nod for Republican, he will run as independent...and then the gloves are off! I hear people saying that if he does, it will assure an Obama re-election, because he will steal Republican votes. But what about the Democrates who are sick of this game too?
We all remember the story of the totus and the hare, right? Slow, steady and consistent! Dr. Paul 2012!!! Get your T-Shirts now!
WakeUpNow, posting one of the most reprehensible, anti-semitic documents ever written is a disgrace, and only cements my view about Ron Paul (assuming you support him). Why don't you just post Henry Fords treatise on "The International Jew" and make some lofty claims about that, too. Same trash.
Huntsman just got less electable in my book.
dont you love these phoney politicians telling us whose electable and whose not? last I knew we the people were the ones who did the electing.. jerks..
Wake Up Now
Thank you for that non-sense. Your fractured mind is just what the people need in times like these. Get some help, friend.
Un-electable? I voted for Obama and will again unless Paul wins the nomination. Does this guy think I'm the only one out there? Paul is the only one who has any chance against Obama.
I don't think Republicans stand much of a chance after their collapse people are fed up with their corporate bull sh!+...But if I had to choose it would be Paul.
I'd have to go with Paul as well.
The last 30 years have been udder crap. Paul runs more as a independant, try some new ideas, real ideas, ideas that when you look at them, you can say, ok this might have potential of sorts. Whats really funny, being a single guy i look at the dating sites time to time.. you realise this whole Democrat/Republican nonsence has actually spilled into the questionaire for a couple? you choose, dem or rep and your answer is put in along with the rest to determin a match... how redickulous is that?
Reagans 11 commandment. He used that so no one would call him out. After a lot of searching for what are the causes of our economic peril, I call him out. His policies have lead to our current state. Trickle down, big tax breaks to the wealthy led to HIM to not being able to keep his budget. So what does he do? He taps into the social security funds and hides it. He sets a precedent. Both Bush's, Clinton and now Obama. Why do you think they want to end social security? Us boomers are in trouble and no one in DC has the balls to tell us. Republican or Democrat, it doesn't matter. Both parties have sold us out.
Simply put, America is the greatest military power on Earth; the military establishment would never stand for a lesser role in world affairs. In a time of globalization and international terrorism, it is naively unrealistic for the U.S. to back off the world stage, economically, politically, or militarily. We are not Switzerland.
The Republican Huntsman was appointed Ambassador to China by a Democratic President. Huntsman should have remained loyal to Obama; instead, he has turned himself out into the cold. His fellow Republicans will never include him the way Obama did.
The banksters own the FED!
Sorry, here is that article I made reference to above!
You Ron Dangerous Paul fans forget the country is NOT libertarian and he wont get on black vote. How do you get elected without a single black vote? unelectable is the correct word.
@ phlG, please learn to read or at least research before you post idiotic and ridiculous statements like that. Ron Paul was an HONORARY EDITOR of that good money newsletter and the piece in question WAS WRITTEN BY A SUBSCRIBER to the news letter. Ron Paul did not see it, proof read it, or publish it...why???? Because he was an HONORARY EDITOR. When he learned of it he disavowed, for 22 years he has done this. But I guess it is ok for our current POTUS to have sat in a racist anti-white Marxist church for over 20 years and only disavow it 2 years into his presidency (and not very convincingly). Get bent.
Ron Paul 2012! No more war mongering Obama, no more corporate welfare Obama, no more Wall Street pocket man Obama. And yes I am quite aware of it being a Republican issue as well, however that is not who is in the White House at this current time. No more of the continuing of Bush Jr's policies and actions.
I give up! Didn't realize they screened and removed articles.
Check out Slate . com. They have a few good articles regarding the Paul bashing going on. He is still holding strong in Iowa!
Dr. Paul 2012!!!
Huntsman is right about Ron Paul being unelectable, a vote for old Paul is a totally wasted vote.
Well, so much for my dream team. I really liked the thought of Paul/Huntsman 2012. Get Paul in there for four years to clean up the mess left by Reagan and Bush I & Bush II, then Huntsman will have the chops for the big chair.
Oh well, I do wonder who Ron Paul will choose as his VP. Critical information considering his age and how wearing the office of President is on a person.
@ Solutions539, you are 100% wrong on both accounts. Yes if you look at the Libertarian platform then you well see that is exactly what this country was founded on. And you can't speak for all black people, I know many of us who are voting for Ron Paul. So quit trying to speak to something you know nothing about and sit back with your color crayons and coloring book and color.
You can scream and holler Ron Dangerous Paul is the only person that can be elected all you want.
But his dangerous agenda is out:
Eliminate - Energy, Commerce, Interior, Education, and Housing and Urban Development, calling them "unnecessary bureaucracies. Also Social Security, Medicare, Student Loans I can go on and on with this nut job but you would just call me the nut job. Did everyone forget the cities were polluted with smog, the lakes had high levels of mercury in the 50's and 60's. Those protests lead to the EPA, eliminating the EPA would let the corrupt corporation create the same mess. The government should protect the people, we see what happens if the corporations continue on there path. The biggest financial collapse since the great depression, do everyone have a gaping hole in their memory?
Having states take over is the same argument the Slave owners used to continue slavery.
As an African American I did read my history books and did extensive research on slavery cause and effects. 150 years ago, that is two grand mothers ago, African Americans were slaves and there was a civil war about it. But yeah most white Americans today say there is no racism and if you read Ron Paul Newsletters you may get a feel on how he thinks on the subject. That type of thinking is dangerous to African Americans in the United States.
This is why he is unelectable.
Because while the US military is a force for good, and a force for world stability, Switzerland sits back and does nothing. Just look back at WW2. Sure, the war would have ended at some point without the involvement of the United States, but with what outcome? How far would the communist hand stretch? How many more people would have died - millions? How long would England have held out without our support? Suppose for a minute that if the Axis powers had not had to divide its military to cover the American led advance, they could have put 50% of that might on the Russian front. Make NO mistake... The war came to its expedited conclusion because of the involvement of the USA. I'm not ready to let it happen again, ever.
@De Tocqueville,
If you are African American and read his news letters you would get the feeling he is a racist.
I'm not sure this country was founded on The Libertarian platform, does that platform include bring back slavery again?
@De Tocqueville,
Ron Paul is on video defending statements in the news letter. CSpan at that. Are those statements in the video false as well?
@De Tocqueville,
You are on a losing stick. This country is NOT Libertarian Period Period Period.
Because the Hispanic, black and a portion of white vote is all President Obama needs to win. Please check the various races of the total Voting Population and you will see why.
For the first time in United States History minority born children in 2010 out paced the white born. So in 18 years whites will be the minority which is the reason they are making these crazy laws.
Any fool who don't think that have to deal with a mix population is futile. They can't be Whites only, Blacks only, Gays only, Hispanics only or Asian only. It would be political suicide to pick one voting block and pit it against the others, as in white only vote.
Get over it people this country is mixed and becoming more mixed as we type on this blog by the second. Catering to the right wing or The Libertarian platform as De Tocqueville would like to say would eliminate yourself with the other half of the voting block.
All must be inclusive not the few or just the rich.
Watch what President Obama do in this up coming election. He will include all groups and that will put him over the top by a good margin.
Vote for the Mormon you repukes
I'll vote for President Obama again 2012
Dissociate,
You and I know the FED is owned by the private BANKSTER families, however the majority of the people believe that the FED is owned by da Fed. Ron Paul could do so much teachin to awaken the SHEEPLE but does not. I beleive he is just another disinformation agent out there for the Puppetmasters to show CRAZY people want to get rid of da FED.
Another article is pushin Palin. While I agree with most that she says, she has picked up two advisories 6 months ago. One was a SOros man and the other a Rothschild. It's ALL a rigged horse race. LOL!
1. Secure da Borders
2. Dig, Drill and Build Energy Independence NOW!
3. ReIndustrialize America. Fair Trade, not sucker trade!
4. Quit bankruptin America, Fair Tax, not rip off tax so the SUPER RICH pay little.
5. Jail da BANKSTERS and corrupt politicians and seize their assets.
6. Git the US out of the UN and da UN out of the US and
Git the US out of the ME and the ME out of da US!
7. Stop ALL foriegn AID NOW!
AND SO ON! LOL!
98 % of the African American vote will go to President Obama, except De Tocqueville vote his will go to Ron Dangerous Paul.
@Dissociate,
Ron Dangerous Paul would not secure the borders please read his policies again.
Is that why you LOL and the end of your rant?
Ron Paul = wasted vote
"No War and Legalize Pot" - I guess the Paul mantra is live it up while everything around you is either falling apart (no regulation) or being destroyed (enemies of USA arm up). Not to be morbid, but what does Paul care anyway, won't he be dead in a few years?....He'll leave the falling apart of the USA to the rest of us who still might be living...
Time to focus on real issues people, not CLOWN issues. Vote the GOP clowns out and coalesce around Romney so we can start talking about some REAL issues. (I'll be voting Obama though)
Solutuions, I figure that's for me. The LOL is because we face serious problems, are BANKRUPT, rely on foreign energy and manufactored goods, and we ignore ALL the problems which have simple solutions. The New World Order owns them ALL and they are purposefully collapsin America, then we will live in the 3rd Wolrd Paradise like President Obama's granmother. I read an article that she STILL doesn't have electricity, does the brother still live in a mud hut? IF da MAN doesn't take care of his own kin, will he take care of you? Ya, bend over and spread dem. LOL!
Solutions539 You are so misinformed it's not funny. First off, Ron Paul did not write the letters in question. Lew Rockwell was the author. Second, Ron Paul would do more for minorities in a single day than the the last 6 presidents combined. You do know that he wants to let people convited on minor drug crimes (mostly minorities) out of prison the first day in office? Third, these newsletters are old news and I mean very old news. Fourth, a majority of blacks would vote for Donald Duck if he was running as a Democrat. The fact of the matter is that Ron Paul wants to move our country forward by reducing the debt and balancing the budget. In order to do that the governement needs to cut spending. Fifth, "whites" as you call them, will still be the Majority race in this country for the foreseeable future. I assume that you combine everybody that isn't pale in complexion into one group of people. And finally, Ron paul has stated that he wants to bring our troops home from over seas to secure our border with Mexico.
RON PAUL 2012: JOIN THE REVOLUTION
Obama won because of white votes period, will that happen again..Doubtful
@give it a rest---lolol you think whites are always going to be the majority? get educated. the hispanic population will outnumber whites very soon. ron paul will never be president period. way too looney for the majority of the people!
I didn't say "always". You just did. I said for the foreseeable future. Learn to read. I am educated. Obviously you are not.
Ron Paul revolution is full steam ahead! Watch all of the D.C. insiders shaking in their boots.
Ron Paul 2012
Republicans are stupid if they don't give Huntsman a real good look. The guy is 100% electable, has no real scandals or gaffs to speak of and is a moderate. He is the only candidate independants could consider. Come on, moderates are not going to vote for Ron Paul. He's a complete hypocrite. You can't want less government to the point of disbanding the CIA but want more government in the bedroom, the altar and the doctors office.
LOL...Huntsman is right, of course. But, don't tell that to the Ron Paul supporters...all 500 of them will take to the vine to tell you how he's the only person who can save this country.
DeminTexas I think you missed the part where Ron Paul said that the government should be GETTING OUT OF OUR BUSINESS.
I wouldn't really want to vote for a GOP candidate, seeing that all of them are pandering to the right. But if I had to choose, it would be Huntsman. He's got experience, he's got knowledge of China, everything we need to compete in the world. I'm still voting for Obama, but if I were him I'd offer Huntsman a post as a foreign policy adviser. I mean, the guy's brilliant. Obama is a bit more charismatic, but Huntsman has the experience. Oh how they'd be a great team to kick the Tea Party's ass...
A couple of you people have me confused. You say that if you can't vote for Paul in the general election you'll for for Obama? So it's either the libertarian wacko or the democrat? Do you realize how different they are on the issues? I guess it is true you get the government you deserve.
It's not his foreign policy views that make Paul unelectable, it's his nutty economic proposals. That, and he opposes the Establishment Clause and the Civil Rights Act.
Ron Paul is a foolish man. His obsession with the constitution is ridiculous, as is his obstinate consistency in applying libertarian ideas to every real world problem. This is one reason I could never take him seriously, let alone consider voting for him. And that's even while I like his position on U.S. drug policy-- I believe he advocates the correct manner of solving the whole drug problem, and yet even so, I can't give him credit for it because when a person embraces a particular ideological view and then insists upon applying it to all cases, he or she demonstrates a feebleness of mind which virtually guarantees the failure of such a candidate's leadership were the nation foolish enough to vote him into power.
He's neither consistent nor libertarian. You can like his positions, but don't do so because he calls himself those words.
The media and left leaning Americans are having consecutive field days with the Republican primary candidates. Seriously, though – does anyone actually believe someone actually capable enough, humble enough, and truly saintly enough would ever in their right frame of mind assume themselves worthy to run this glorious country? You would have to be a totally arrogant, narcissist martyr. And so- we wind up with the candidates we have. This has been the case consistently in recent times. My left leaning friends are having fun with the current process. I don’t blame them really. The field does seem to be slim pickin’s.”
However – looking back -- the previous Democratic primaries were quite similar. Due to our very short, reality t.v. American attention spans, we all forget the Primary Candidates in 2008 and prior…..
Remember Mike Gravel, Joe Biden, Bill Richardson, Chris Dodd, and Dennis Kucinich?
How about Tom Vilsack (who wanted to abolish the Department of Energy –oddly, just like the current Perry);
Wesley Clark (who blew up from demeaning McCain’s military service and time as POW);
Tom Daschle (wishy washy on abortion (like Romney), and was a politician turned lobbyist (sort of like Newt);
Howard Dean (where the media overplayed his supposedly cold-induced or poorly sound controlled concession speech scream. This one unfortunate gaffe sent his supporters scrambling like roaches in a sudden light --- due to the media ---kind of like Palin and Bachmann)
You all supported John Kerry who couldn’t get his “joke” articulated correctly to slam President Bush and wound up slamming our soldiers and military instead. Then there was his “out of touch” wealthy existence , and flip flop philosophies.
Any one truly qualified to run this country, and serve as the leader of the free world, would never take the position on. So we are stuck with who we are stuck with.
We have to choose the one, in my opinion, who will listen to the “down to earth” people --- not just the ideological right or the ideological left…. focus on the values upon which our country was founded, and focus on the values with which our country survived disastrous times.
It’s sad that this primary and election – as well as those recently past – have become simply events to blog and guffaw about. We have serious issues that need to be addressed and debated and solved. It would be nice if we would put all of our snarky and “for entertainment purposes only” attitudes aside, and think of our collective security, dignity, and well being.
Just sayin’…….
Obama is a great president. Just sayin'......
Yeah great at giving Goldman Sachs employees government jobs since most of his staff is comprised of Goldman Sachs AFTER them and their little banker buddies paid almost 1 billion to get him elected in 08. Oh and he's also great at stripping Americans of their right to actually be accused of a crime and have a fair trial instead of being locked away indefinitely on government trumped up unexamined claims they are somehow against the state apparatus and not for. In case you didn't notice he just signed the bill allowing that just last week!
You do realize that under the continuing patriot act, that that has actually been in effect for years? That if you are being accused of terrorism and that is also in the bill, that you can be held without counsel or as long as they want. Just saying, get your facts straight before you start making accusations, and this was a bill that was mostly spurred by the republicans in congress and as it really doesn't change much, he signed it.
However justvisiting, you seem to be exceptionally adept at trumped up charges on the president so why don't you get into law enforcement?
How is that 700 billion dollars that Bush gave the mortgage companies in New York for failing at their jobs without any accountability and that they have so far accumulated 77 percent more wealth because of it in three years, than they did in the previous 8. Yet they are still holding on to it and not creating jobs or lending money.
Honestly, the republicans have no business talking ethics on money, they signed a tax pact that essentially would keep the taxes lower on the top 1% lower than anyone else, no matter what happened to the rest of the country. And while they are 77% richer, the rest of the nation is at 50% poverty line. A pact signed to an unelected official who is in interested in keeping the rich even richer. Warren Buffet the wealthiest man in the nation has repeatedly called them out on the fallacy of the pact.
Very well put, Candace. Can I have a date? Seriously.
I totally support the extremist and stupid that has over taken the far right and left being kicked to the curb. Unfortunately we seem to lack the people willing to run.
takenaka, are you being sarcastic or on drugs?while i give obama a 50/50 on foreign policy,he's a complete failure on the economy.and as james carvell say's,"it's the economy stupid"
I would like to break down some of Huntsmans comments to see what he is driving at.
"I'm not an isolationist. I don't share the Ron Paul world view. I am a realist."
"Huntsman dubbed Paul's positions on Iran and American military presence overseas as "out there enough" to be harmful to U.S. national security. With issues like Iran "on the ascent," Huntsman warned Iran would become the "transcendent foreign policy challenge of the decade.""
Because Paul doesn't believe we need to have our nose stuck in the affairs of every country around the globe, that makes him unelectable, and would harm our national security? As though our standards are the greatest ever? Huntsman, take a closer look at what condition democracy has put this country in. We can't even call ourselves a republic anymore, they want us to be called a democracy. I also gather , other countries are not capable of running themselves, or making choices on their own without our influence? Our so called leaders have made a mockery of the Constitution, and treat it as though it was a piece of toilet paper. Again, that is just fine with you, right?
"Huntsman didn't stop there. "Things like legalizing drugs -- I just don't think this is a position that is going to sell well," Huntsman told reporters on Wednesday night. "I just don't think he's going to get enough mainstream support to win.""
That's ok Huntsman, there are legal drugs on the market, that do more harm than good, but, that doesn't really matter, does it?
You know Huntsman, after reading your drivel, I have come to the conclusion, that in your eyes, Paul isn't corrupt enough to suit you and those running Washington. And I didn't just pick that up from the quotes I used here.
@jan & justvisiting
Both parties are guilty of stripping away our former freedoms of which you speak. Bush & Obama.
That's one of the big reasons Ron Paul is popular - love him or hate him everyone knows he will defend the Constitution always.
I don't know why all the other candidates either support the changes or are quiet about the issue. Besides Ron Paul, none of the other candidates seem to give a rat's ass.
The problem with Ron Paul is, the more you hear him talk about his isolationist ways and his support of terrorist states, the more he terrifies you as commander in chief. Also Neo Nazi propaganda? How the hell does he get elected to anything? He wants to shut down intelligence to give us warning on impending attacks and feels they are justified in the attacks. If you too are interested in living in the middle east, where you have to have a automatic weapon to feel safe and your always fair game to terrorist attacks and the government doesn't care, vote for him.
@Jan
Support of terrorist states? Ok, now you are just plain lying. You are discrediting your entire argument.
3 wars in the middle east. It got us buttkiss. The middle east is still just as dangerous as it was 10 years ago. Probably more dangerous.
Your arguments make no sense.
It is more dangerous so why stick our butts up in the air and tell them to stick it to us like Paul wants to do? He supports Iran, he thinks 9/11 is merely a property dispute, look his interviews up. The man is a freak show, and his supporters are bigger freak shows.
Ron Paul doesn't support Iran any more than Meir Dagan. Just that neither thinks war is the first solution to any crisis.
I'd rather have a President who thinks long and hard about disputes than one who rushes to war. That's how we got stuck in that craphole Iraq for ten years.
I don't see in any of the debates or in his platform any sort of support for Iran or 9/11.
Why are you so hot on Iran anyways? Their airforce and army are no better than Iraq's.
The chance of Iran attacking America is about the same as England lobbing 5 missiles at Paris.
If you are so hot to attack Iran, then go there. Don't let the door hit yer a$$ on the way out. Everyone else is sick of paying for endless stupid wars.
Like I said, the Middle East is more dangerous now than ten years ago. So all the wars ain't done squat. Except bankrupt our asses.
Jan-21270 I dont know where you get your information but it is false. Ron Paul sees the same value as our forefathers did. We are not to be the police of the world. We had the French help us over throw the British which precipitated our relationship with the French. Ron Paul is a follower of the Constitution. If you look at the NDAA that Obama is going to sign you will see how many people voted for this and how many did not there names are right here http://freakoutnation.com/2011/12/16/the-86-senators-who-voted-to-pass-ndaa-need-to-occupy-the-unemployment-line/ maybe you should read this which addresses the NDAA which is against your Constitution. The rest of you Sheeple should look into what Ron Paul is actually saying. Everything Ron Paul stands for is based upon the Constitution. Start looking into your internet instead of relying on National News. There are a lot of other sites which supply an honest representation of what is really going on!!! RON PAUL 2012
Candice, not one of this crop of Republican wannabees measures up to the weakest of the 2008 Democratic candidates.
I'm a democrat. Sorry but the republicans are trying to kill me. I have no choice. But if a republican must win, I hope it's Ron Paul. He is for the constitution, and he believes in America. I think he would be least likely to play favorites with the rich.
Nice, articulate, no name calling. Good posting, Candice!
Here are a few points you bring me to consider:
-- Calling the main stream media "left-leaning" is more descriptive of you than of the media. It's true that many news articles appear to be more liberal than conservative, but that's (in my opinion) because fresh ideas and different approaches are newsworthy and tired, out-worn conservative ones aren't. Please note that I'm not saying that the fresh ideas and different approaches are good, bad, or indifferent -- I'm saying that they make for more interesting reading. That sells papers. It's good business. And that's what reporting is all about. For tired, worn-out, boring, "leaning" media, you need only turn to Fox, which finds itself having to spout all sorts of nonsense and distortions in order to get people to pay attention.
It is true that presidential elections bring out the worst in wannabe candidates. Your brief historical review was fun. But this particular batch of Republican hopefuls seems especially laughable. (And they make for fun reading, so the media is having a field day with them. See above.) Consider, for example: One front-runner was forced to resign as Speaker when found lamentably lacking in ethics -- and he's a front-runner! Wow!
The plea for "down to earth" candidates reflects a strange case of "double-think" (see Orwell's 1984). Some of us seem eager to shun a Harvard graduate who edited a prestigious law review there -- too elitist. But some of us seem able to embrace a pizza salesman who clearly had little if any education -- ah, but he was a businessman!
And that brings me to one final thought: We need a businessman in the White House --NOT!! The problem, as I see it, is that there is way too much laissez-faire being paid to "business" as it is. The "government" (i.e. Congress) -- made up of mostly business types already -- ought to be the counterweight to "business." The capitalist system is terrific, but it needs oversight. Unfettered free enterprise is good for business -- but it's bad for the rest of us.
Happy New Year, Y'all!
@Candace:
I agree with much of what you say and that's why I am supporting Obama in 2012!
I know that he is by far the best suited to enhance our collective security, dignity, and well being.
Wow, isn't Huntsman calling the kettle black. The guy spent a fortune with super pacs in NH and he's barely denting the polls there. If his administration is run anything like his campaign, Heaven help us.
I voted for Pres. Obama and am a progressive. Go Ron Paul! I encourage EVERYONE of his supporters to reach out to volunteer NO to the campaign, no matter where you live.
Go Ron Paul!!!!!
Candice, I just think the media is lazy...period. I was thrilled to hear that in NYC, WBGO is extending their broadcasting range (they are a jazz station in Newark, NJ). They have the best news...ever. Doug Doyle is the best news director and the most impartial. Other than listening to Democracy Now, Dylan Rattigan/Morning Joe and once in a while CNN and Fox (only in the afternoon with Megan Kelly), that's the only place to get decent journalism. Unfortunately it's only NJ politics.
Fox in the evening is horrible, CNN isn't too bad, Current is laughable and does not speak for Progressives (I think Keith Olbermann is still on Occupy Wall Street), and the rest of MSNBC are talking hand puppets.
Ron Paul doesn't know what is even in the Constitution, and he only believes in white Americans who are straight. He just had to scrub his website of an endorsement from Philip Kayser, a fundamentalist nutjob who advocates the death penalty for homosexuals. Note -- he originally featured this incredible jerkwad's endorsement on his page. Kind of like he used to admit that he actually read his own newsletter and contributed to it until the massively racist things that he and his friends published caught up with him in the modern day.
Ron Paul is a giant ball of bigoted hate. I would never vote for him, and I would never ever, ever acknowledge him as my President. He's a huge, ignorant JERK.
justvisiting-1857005 keep your friends close keep your enemies closer.
@thisbusymonster Thank you i advocated the same reasoning about Ron Dangerous Paul. A Jerk
Yes, Jungleboogie.
These two parties are the Jacob & Esau of our time. Both parties origin is the Federalist Party. At the time there were only the Federalist (favored the constitution as written) and the Anti-Federalists (did not favor the Constitution). The anti-Federalists crumbled leaving the Federalists. But the Federalists was Split between three groups. Those Groups could be seen as grow government crowd, the people who though people should be as free from government as possible (Republicans), and people who believed the people should rule the government (Democratic). Jefferson saw the strong Central Government Faction taking control of the Party and split away forming the Democratic-Republican Party.
After the Federalist fell apart, the Democratic-Republican split apart. The Democratic party preferring a government about the size it was and the National Republicans who wanted smaller government. The Democratic Party was larger and had the big name people of the day and held the government. The National Republicans were smaller, and wanted the government to promote growth, but not displace our original settler's, the Indians. http://dig.lib.niu.edu/message/ps-nationalrepublican.html
But Andrew Jackson was autocratic, and the National Republican Party joined a new wave of Democratic defectors to Whigs (english party favorable to the colonists in 1776). There was also anti-catholic and anti-immigrant factions that joined the party at that time. With the demise of Jackson, and the invasion of the anti-catholic/anti-imigrant groups, the Whigs began to crumble, and the founding members, Reorganized to a new party founded on smaller government, that was Anti-slavery and pro-growth policies. This theme earned them huge defections from the Democratic Party, which was Pro-slavery. The defections swept them into power.
Today the Republican Party is still as it is founded although the definition of "smaller government" has really become just smaller than what the Democratic Party wants, and Pro government growth policy has varied from Lazzie Faire to extreme progressive practices like the senior prescription drug program.
The Democratic party stance on slavery should have been it's death knell. The Republicans swept the southern elections, but the democrats countered by painting them as 'carpet baggers'.
The Republican Congress failed to support the following presidents with adequate funding to rebuild the south. Left high and dry and with the Whites being the majority in the south, one by one the Republican states fell into democratic hands, who promptly passed the Racist "Jim Crow" laws. Southern republicans, then pretty much blended in with the democrats in the south. It was the Democrats who resisted integration, not the Republicans. BUT not many Republicans joined the minorities on the front lines, but the republican majority in the 50's did propose civil rights legistlation, but the far majority of Democrats and a handfull of republicans opposed it.
In Fairness to the Democratic party, The Northern Democrats had a tendency to be more supportive of minoirites, it was the southern Democrats that were unified against equality. Even in the Minority Ranks, growth in the Democratic party was in the North, not the south.
The turning point was in 1963. The turning point wasn't to be moral or anything like that, it was to gain the minority votes. Slavery is more than physical. It also can be just as effective if done emotionally and intellectually. Pollitics in both parties practice emotional and intellectual slavery, but the best at it is Democrats. Why do I say that? Because they have very successfully painted Republicans as racists, anti-freedom, anti-individuals, and totally corrupt - when they themselves are at the least equally guilty.
Ron Paul in his past behavior lends himself to be a tool of proof for the Democrats. He may be reformed from the person who allowed a very racist newsletter to be published for 12 years. Being reformed does not matter to the democrats, only the facts that favor what they want to paint matter.
Shouldn't the Wrong Paul supporters be out preparing for the race war and barring the door against the AK47 wielding IRS agent? Why are they posting on these boards while the boogey man is hiding behind every event in the world. Paul likely never realized he would appeal to 20% OF THE EXPECTED 80,000 people that will participate in the Iowa caucus. He was printing his conspiracy BS for years, taking the money and cranking up the crazy to attract the fringe crowd. Now he acts like it is a shame to ask him about his prior loony tunes writings, what a joke.
Jesus would vote for Ron Paul.
Jesus wouldn't vote for Ron Paul because Jesus doesn't get into politics. He above all the name-calling and whining, unless you take out the condemnations of the greedy Pharisees. I do like some of Ron Paul's foreign policy ideas, like stop being so interventionist, but I still think America has to right to intervene in some cases, just not all of them. I'd rather take out about 144 of the bases that we have all over the world, cause it would save $400 billion over 10 years. As for Iran getting a nuclear weapon, I don't really want that to happen. I know that they would never use it due to the fact that if Israel shoots it down they have 80 nukes ready to turn Iran into a radioactive wasteland, but still it would cause an arms race in the Middle East and put nuclear weapons within reach of al-Qaeda supporters in Saudi Arabia. Plus I do think that al-Qaeda attacked America because of our involvement in the Middle East, but still it's not justified to kill thousands of innocent civilians. And I really want to kick some al-Qaeda ass. Ron Paul has some good foreign policy notes (notice I say SOME), but the rest of his ideas are kooky and unrealistic at best and insane/dangerous at worst.
Jesus would be ineligible to vote for Ron Paul, being an illegal immigrant.
He would likely not even be in the country, since being from the Middle East, he would no doubt be profiled by the TSA or on a terror watch list at the DHS. If he tried coming up from Mexico, likely as not he'd be shot by The Minutemen, or be locked up in Joe Arpaio's concentration camp. God forbid he make it to Alabama, lest he get pulled over by the cops and deported. If he dared preach all that love-thy-neighbor nonsense, he'd get a mental hygiene warrant, or maybe even Guantanamo Bay under suspicion of some weird new form of terrorist conspiracy.
No, if Jesus somehow managed to arrive here, the USA and her jingoistic citizens would find hundreds of ways to harass, persecute, violate, deny and deport the Socialist of the Sinai. Rush Limbaugh would dump him in with the rest of the hairy, lazy, spoiled mooches of Occupy Wall Street. Glen Beck would bring out a brand new whiteboard to show us how Jesus is actually a communist, funded by George Soros and ACORN.
Oh, and God Bless America.
Here's what's going to prove to be unelectable:
600,000+ senior citizens lost most of their life-time retirement savings;
4,399,000 citizens filed bankruptcy;
8,004,425 citizens homes were foreclosed;
6,351,000 citizens added to our poverty rolls;
16,489,000 citizens added to our food stamp program;
4,500,000 citizens lost their company-paid health insurance benefits;
171,255 U.S. businesses filed bankrupcy;
390 U.S. banks closed;
$4.43 Trillion dollars were added to our National Taxpayer Debt. And climbing.
Obama's got some explaining to do. Whoever is the nominee is going to rip him a new one.
That's not going to be Ron Paul.
Hate to break it to you, while the others are all talking about spending more money on defense and offering no real solutions to domestic spending cuts. Outside of doing the impossible for a president and overriding Obamacare. It took the dumb of the pact to point out that it is not in the presidential powers to override a congressional bill. It takes congress with the president, or the supreme court. By the way, while you are blaming all that on Obama, look who gave 700 billion of unaccountable dollars to mortgage companies before he left office. Look who took us into two unnecessary wars they we are still paying for. Look who said screw you to every ally we had and then left the nation in the worst economic shape since 1930. Seriously, until the republicans can take some accountability and make sense (Huntsman is the only one) Obama has mine and many other independent votes.
George Bush isn't running, so what's your point?
Right, so we elect another free spending neo-conservative moron like Bush to spend our way to prosperity.
Yeah right.
After Bush/Obama, Ron Paul is not looking too bad. More electable than Gingrich, and not a stooge like Romney.
That blaming Obama for the mess he left, is really pointless and electing republicans who want to continue the pattern of keeping the wealth at the top only, while not offering any reasonable answers on reducing our budget is even more pointless.
Unfortunately listen to him talk about 9/11 and him calling it a property dispute and his support of Irans right to defend themselves through terrorism. He is a complete isolationist, he wants to dismantle the CIA that feeds our defense information on potential attacks. He wants to dismantle the department of education because well, only the stupid would agree with the previous things.
Not to mention his making a living off of neo nazi propaganda during the nineties, that as Huntsman has put it, he has never adequately explained.
Defense spending, Interesting.
I heard a program on the radio today that was very interesting also, It seems that Monday the day after Christmas saw the second largest day of sales for one particular item in history. I was wondering if anyone else heard it also, or, failing that can anyone guess what the particular item was.
A bit of a clue? 100,000+ individual items in one day, it is a fairly pricey item most of the time and this covers nationwide.
The largest ever day of sales for this particular item was Black Friday, yep the day after thanksgiving this year. 120,000+ were sold on that day.
The data comes from a source that knows the exact figures with an impeccable record of recording such figures.
If no one figures it out I'll be back and reveal what that item was....(some just might be surprised)
I am all for cutting defense spending through getting out of wars and using special forces to protect us from threats to national security. In fact I think its the greatest accomplishment that Obama has done, was listening to the military on how to handle the military. Increasing special forces and pulling us out of war and decrease the foot soldiers drastically.
Jan, defense department spending and the CIA budget are so out of control, they can't even account for all the money.
This is our money. Things need to get back under control. Right now we are spending money faster than we can print it.
The President is supposed to listen to we, the people, not the military.
You do know we live in a Republic, not a military dictatorship, right?
As for Ron Paul, I believe he made a living as a doctor at that time.
As for that newsletter it sounds like he just signed his name to it without actually following the content closely.
I don't recall anything prior nor since which he was associated with.
The guy disavowed it over a decade ago, before it was a headline. That was faster than Obama over the Reverend Wright issue.
You know we are vulnerable to attacks, and last time I checked the military were not allowed to act on American soil for a reason. Its not a military state, that argument is completely flawed. Cut spending by stopping the wars and decreasing the foot soldiers, protect us from national threats through intelligence and special forces. Its really not that hard, and you the people are stupid if you think Ron Paul could get any of those things past congress. He would be a complete waste of a president, he would not act to protect American from foreign threats so there goes the commander in chief and there is no way that congress is going to allow him to compromise national security that much.
He went to a church he wasn't out there signing neo nazi propaganda and profiting from it. Seriously that is a flawed comparison. And disavowing it once he took public office and doing it while he was a doctor, tells me he disavowed it for voting purposes not for beliefs.
Uh, that's Ron Paul's platform. That's what he wants us to do. End the wars and stick to defending America.
You do understand me, don't you? You are actually supporting Ron Paul with that statement, you do realize that don't you? Go back and read what I quoted from your post.
You are supporting Ron Paul's position lol. *facepalm*
As I said earlier, Ron Paul disavowed the newsletters long before his first run for president, faster than Barack Obama, who disavowed Reverend Wright during his first presidential run. 'nuff said.
Yeah, and then you look at the rest of his platform, you cannot defend America without intelligence bringing in the information on potential threats. He calls 9/11 a freaking property dispute, 3000 American lives are nothing to him but the buildings were. He wants to support Iran who by the way is our biggest threat, and hates us. He is delusional if he thinks they will respond to diplomacy. They are funding the majority of the terrorism in the middle east, look at his platform and tell me how any of that makes sense? Tell me how I can feel safe from terrorist attacks if you are dismantling all information coming in on the attacks? Stupid, unsafe and congress will NEVER agree to it. Huntsman is saying bring the troops home too, but he doesn't support being stupid enough to stick our bottoms in the air and telling the world to stick it to us.
Ron Paul supporters are the most delusional group I have ever encountered. You really think he is going to get any of the stuff he is claiming done? We have a congress and supreme court to prevent a president from becoming the kind of nightmare he would be and they would. He would do absolutely nothing in any form, he is considered the most ineffective member of the house because he can never get anything through on his agenda. He just votes.
Ron Paul supports Iran? That's a plain whopper of a lie.
And you call us delusional?
Ron Paul was instrumental in getting the ball rolling on the Fed Audit. Yeah right, "he just votes".
If regaining control of the 'out of control' government spending is doing nothing, what can I say.
Your arguments still make no sense. That is a nightmare for you? To know where your tax dollars are going and to quit writing blank checks to the Fed?
When you are debating, please try to use actual facts, not invented facts Jan.
As for Obama somehow being for the poor, exactly how does that work? I keep hearing the rants about Republicans wanting to keep the 1% rich and richer, and yet in 3 years, Obama has done more to keep the rich rich and the poor poorer than any President in history.
Obama employs more former investment banker types than any President in history.
Obama spends more taxpayer money on his own personal fun than any President in history, and what is immorally worse, is that he is doing it during the Great Recession!
That anyone can post that Obama is somehow "for the common man" is beyond laughable, it is embarrassing. I almost feel bad for the loons still bailing the leaking boat, but not so much, as they are so damn arrogant and condescending.
We need a leader, not a whiner / complainer. Leadership is completely lacking in DC. Boehner is as embarrassing as the lying thieving Harry Reid, and Queen Pelosi, with her $10,000 a night Christmas Vacation hotel stay. Classic old-money rich people partying in Hawaii, laughing their butts off at all the dupes who keep voting for them.
You got 2 choices. Ron Paul as president, who will reverse the catastrophic course the US is on OR any other R candidate who will ensure the US continues it's march to oblivion.
Bombing our way to a peaceful world is NOT the way to promote national security. Hate to break it to you, but it's true. US international arrogance WILL come to an end, one way or another. That cannot be stopped. Ron Paul will do it with dignity. Anyone else running for prez will do it by committing more GWB war crimes.
Iran, will, sooner or later, get a nuke bomb, just as Israel has obtained them. It's just a matter of time. They will build one or buy one. Israel and the US would be wise to come to grips with that fact instead of pretending we can delay the inevitable forever.
Obama & Bush are equally bad, mostly in the same way, but also in different ways. The US has ended up with the two worst presidents when it was most important to have good presidents. I would not worry about foreign policy and drug laws when we are up to our neck in alligators. If Paul is unelectable, it is only with Republicans, I suspect that it is Huntsman that is more unelectable. The republicans might elect him, but as far as I can figure, only the independents seem to have anyone with any sense. The Repubicans have the Tea Party and the Democrates have the Obama supporters (who don't even realize that Obama is really thier enemy).
Jan - your post at 3.11 - "Last time I checked the military were not allowed to act on American soil for a reason."
You better check again Jan. Maybe you can ask your hero Obama why he signed into law the NDAA?
Some fun facts:
It explicitly repeals the Posse Comitatus - The law that says the US military cannot be deployed on the Homefront against American Citizens. Repealed. They can now be deployed in your hometown. Against you and your family.
It bypasses the Bill of Rights by allowing for indefinite detention of US Citizens with no habeus corpus. "Untill the cessastion of hostilities" What, terrrorism will be over someday? That means the US Military can come into your home in the middle of the night and snatch you away, with no phone call, no right to a lawyer, nobody will even know what happened. The Government can now make you *poof* Disappear.
It mandates that all returning US Military personnel be placed on a terrorist watch list. Thanks for your service!!!!
It says you can be considered a terrorist if you have morew than 7 days worth of food in your house. I guess that makes almost everybody a terrorist. A dozen eggs, a case of Ramen from BJ's, a couple of cans of chili and a gallon of milk. Poof! You're a terrorist! Congratulations!
Only Three Senators Voted Against This Bill!!!!!!!!!!!
ONE OF THEM WAS RON PAUL!!!!
I vote for Freedom. I vote for The Constitution. I am voting for Ron Paul!
(Bernie Sanders was another, but he's not running. I forget the third one)
When Obama signs a bill declaring the US is a Battlefield and the Citizens have no rights
How can you defend him?
Ron Paul cannot be bought or sold. He believes in what he is saying, and he is consistent in his message for over 40 years, he has not flip flopped, NOT ONCE!
We know Congress is Corrupt. If they're attacking Ron Paul, that should make you think a little.
WILL YOU GOP CONSERVATIVES JUST SHUT UP AND ADMIT THAT THE ECONOMY IS IMPROVING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The stock market and the labor market are improving, the housing sector is starting to recover, jobs are being created, etc. What more proof do you need?? Are you so against Obama that you won't admit that his economic policies HAVE ACTUALLY HELPED US?????? Or that the economy is improving under his watch??? No wait, this is too much to ask from Republican idiots. When Obama screws up you are all over it, but when he does something right you ignore it and go on the nitty-gritty stuff. After defending you from being called racists, I'm now concluding that you ARE racists. Why Obama?? Why now?? Would you have done the same thing to Hillary, bringing up the Lewinsky scandal. My God, you people are sick. So the right wing IS evil. They ARE anti-American. Well you have just met a powerful enemy, my dear Republithugs. Prepare to be vanquished in 2012, cause Obama and the Democrats are gonna kick your asses!!!!!!
OBAMA BIDEN 2012
GOP/TEA PARTY EXTINCT 2012
AMERICA 2012
DEMOCRATS 2012
Only Three Senators Voted Against This Bill!!!!!!!!!!!
ONE OF THEM WAS RON PAUL!!!!
When in the Hell did Ron Paul become a SENATOR???
Time for your meds...
"Jan"
another uninformed "independent" Obot.
You people are disgustingly stupid. Pay attention. If you did you will discover that supporting the Big O is not in your best interest.
sk-ntro -
Your right, the three votes against were RAND Paul, Bernie Sanders, and Al Franken.
The bill was revised and the following Senate vote passed it 85-14.
Here are the nays -
Cardin (D-MD)
Coburn (R-OK)
Crapo (R-ID)
DeMint (R-SC)
Durbin (D-IL)
Franken (D-MN)
Harkin (D-IA)
Lee (R-UT)
Merkley (D-OR)
Paul (R-KY)
Risch (R-ID)
Sanders (I-VT)
Wyden (D-OR)
Not sure what your point is otherwise.... The bill was cosponsored by McCain(R) and Levens(D), it was written in a closed door committee, and it passed overwhelmingly with both Dems and Repubs all agreeing in a matter of hours.
Ron Paul tried to stop it in the House, but was overwhelmingly outvoted
Notice only 6 Democrats voted against this Bill? Only 10% opposed.
Notice Obama signed it right away?
NOTICE THE DEMOCRATS WILLINGLY SIGNING AWAY YOUR RIGHTS???????
Ron Paul is not electable. By any stretch of the imagination.
Unelectable, I agree. But it seem everywhere I turn, I see die-hard Paul fans pleading their case. He reminds me of Pat Paulson from the 1970's...sort of fun to watch and laugh at, but....come on.
What concerns me is his son Rand will be next up, taking the mantle in 2016 (through...2044 maybe?). He's much more aggressive, extreme...and an even bigger wacko.
He's been elected about to congress for over 30 years.
He's been elected more times then Obama who was a first time senator who didn't even finish his term!
Yes. Obama didn't run on such radical ideas though.
I see people who probably haven't really looked into Ron Paul outside of seeing him in his non psycho debate performances. Watch some interviews with Hannity and his ideas on Iran really are scary, he called 9/11 a property issue, and supported their right to defend themselves. 3000 American lives were a property issue? Ron Paul, once people start seeing him has zero chance of winning.
First Ron Paul isn't even worth the media's time to talk about.
Then if he wins Iowa it doesn't matter.
Now they say Ron Paul is unelectable.
The left wing media says he's a racist and fascist.
The right wing media says he's supported by Democrats and socialists.
I don't recall the establishment being this worried in a long time.
Being elected to the house versus the senate and particularly the presidency is a joke of campaigning. Look at who gets elected at local levels? They don't study the candidates. Of course they keep electing Ron Paul, he seems sane until you listen to him long enough.
The right wing, justifiably is more worried about keeping a candidate that will not destroy their congressional seats chances with their extremism. Right now, they support Romney because he has an off chance of winning and he is milk toast, nothing offensive about him.
He's probably not electable, but it's great to hear someone who has the guts to say we should legalize drugs, stop the wars, and close our foreign prisons etc. Even so, I won't vote for anyone who is too extreme in any direction.
Its his lack of willingness to defend us from the ever growing threat of Iran that is worrisome the most to me. He wants to shut down the CIA and intelligence that would warn of us potential terrorist attacks and he called 9/11 nothing more than a property dispute. The man is as dangerous as they come as the commander in chief of the US military.
Huntsman has no standing to call anyone unelectable, he is jealous because Ron Paul has 10 times the people behind him than Huntsman ever had or ever will. Coming from Huntsman , it is a nothing statment but the news media will play it up. Vote Paul and get an honest person for a change, a big change. Vote anyone else and get more of the same, or should I say less of the same, just another lying politican.
Yeah, Huntsman won his reelection to governor by 80% and served as an ambassador to China. His refusal to sign the tax pact to Grover Norquist has slowed his progress, if people looked at him they would see he is the only one offering answers.
Not electable huh? PPP just released their 12/27 poll on Dr Paul....

PPP surveyed 565 likely Republican caucus voters on December 26th and 27th. The
margin of error for the survey is +/-4.1%.
Looking good for Dr Paul!!!!
Ron Paul versus Obama? Really that is the question every GOP should be asking because defeating Obama should be their goal if they had half a brain but unfortunately only the moderates and establishment have managed to keep their brain cells in the GOP.
@Egilman
Thanks for the stats!
Ron Paul 2012!
@ Jan21270
If you're so pro Obama, then why are you so HIGHLY concerned about what the GOP thinks of Ron Paul? Sounds to me like he will be your ideal opponent if he is so unelectable, no? Because according to you, defeating Obama should be their main goal and the best why for them to do that would be to elect someone other than Ron Paul as the GOP candidate.
It's obvious you are very concerned Ron Paul will get the nomination and win the presidency. Or, you are in fact not an Obama supporter at all but a Romney supporter fearing Ron Paul will get the nomination so you are working to discredit him.
The main point is Ron Paul respects and will protect the Consitution more than any other candidate and the Constitution stands for the rights of all Americans.
Better Paul than Romney or Gingrich. Vote for the one that's LEAST likely to screw up the country if you can't find anyone that's definitely able to fix things.
"Ron Paul is not electable. By any stretch of the imagination."
So Pat, if he is not as electable as you believe he is, where does that leave the rest of the corrupt lineup you have to choose from? And I'm talking from both parties!
Interesting that everyone says he is unelectable - all the while more and more people are supporting him, He has rasied 6 million dollars over the past couple weeks from actual americans (not corporations, like Newt and Romney) and I think people are tired of the status quo. I sent him a donation. You shoudl too. If not, good luck with the old worn our talking points from all the bloated establishment candidates that wont do anything to change things. Go Ron Paul 2012.
You people saying Ron Paul is unelectable are way off base.
I spent time in the Camps with OWS and Occupy Boston. Michelle Bachman and the Mainstream Media are lying to you. The Occupy protesters DO NOT SUPPORT OBAMA!!!
They support Ron Paul!!!
Obama's youth vote will fall to Ron Paul this November. All the former Democrats like me, who thought we were getting change, but now feel betrayed by Obama.... Most of us are going to vote for Ron Paul as well.
Anyone who supports Obama hasn't been paying attention. His tax break targets funding for Social Security, and 60% of the tax cut benefit will go to people making 100k or more. He cut Food Stamps by 29 billion to give money to the states to "save or create jobs". He put SS and Medicare on the table in the deficit talks, as his first negotiating position.
And now he signed the NDAA, which repeals the posse comitatus and allows indefinite detention of US citizens, in direct violation of The Constitution. The Military can now be deployed against US Citizens in the US. Your government just wrote into law that they can grab you from your bed in the middle of the night, and make you just dissappear. No, I am NOT exagerating.
Who can support such a man?
He's no Democrat, he's a republicrat!
Hey eveyone, I hear you all sayin it, but I keep seeing his support growing. It's been growing for four months now, hasn't slacked off one bit even with all the hammering everyone's been doing on him. Everyone else has risen to the top and then fallen on their swords, each time the good Dr get a little bit stronger, you can't stop it, although I know you would like to, but it just isn't going to happen....
Like in 2008, everyone was saying that Obama was a flash in the pan, young senator that hasn't paid his dues yet, I get the same feelings like I had back then when I was telling people before the Iowa vote that Obama was going to be the next president.
Ron Paul is going to be the next president. I don't think they can stop him....(I don't want then to)
(ps; I made a lot of money betting on Obama last election cycle)
Ron Paul is stopping himself, and I would take that bet hands down. The only bet I wouldn't take is on Huntsman or Romney, the only two moderately sane of the pact.
I have predicted the rise and downfall of all of the tea party candidates to date, in fact I said before they put their names in how they would go down. I am very good at predicting too, and I predicted Obama too, that was the smart money with Palin as his old selfs side kick. Not an impressive pick.
Let me save you from yourself, because you're now promoting 'psychic powers' as immutable political savvy. Jan - you have predicted the status quo.
Ron Paul is the reason the Electoral College was created. That group is the last defense against the election of a despot or a moron.
There are exactly no examples anywhere in the USA of expert opinion-makers (people with serious national security credentials) that agree that disengagement and isolationism is anything good for this country. To the contrary, we are painted into the very same corner every other empire in history has found itself. Yes, we created this insane state of affairs ourselves, but that is beside the point.
A Paul administration would preside over the conversion of America to a Eunuch State. It simply cannot be allowed to happen. 66 years of empire-building cannot be undone in short order. It will take a long time, as well as a complete rewrite of our national goals. Such cannot be done by the stroke of the president's pen. Such will not be done as long as American Jingoism reigns supreme.
FYI sk-, Tis Time for a "complete" re-write before we slide any farther down into this CESS-POOL of bull-shytt that MY republicano party, along w/O'bummuuh, has brought us to.
The idiot that was ambassador to China has really impressed me though! <> EACH and EVERY time I walk through a WALLY-WURLD I can see HIS glorious handi-work, first hand. <> Yessireeebillybobthornton!
Huntsman = a joke.
Oh Pleezeeee vote for Paul. Or any other jokers (except Huntsman). The GOP will likely implode if they keep going along with this circus. Each and everyone of the "top" 4 have a lot of issues. I will hold my nose and vote Obama in 2012. He is the only one that has a lick of sense. Huntsman is by far the best they have...but can't see it. It will be Obama V Mitt.
Not invading every country that we dislike or playing world police is not isolationism. Research the candidate's views before spouting Fox News propaganda. The simple fact is almost nobody outside the United States likes us anymore. If we do not stop pretending we are Rome, we are going to face the same bloody end. Ron Paul has stated clearly that the U.S. should not disengage from the rest of the world but should close most of our foreign bases, stop trying to dictate other countries policies, stop financially supporting our enemies and stop invading other countries. What part of that is isolationist? Is it the only way to move foreword in a time when nuclear technology is easily obtainable. We will NOT be able to stop countries we dislike from becoming nuclear powers over the long term no matter how we try. The more we attempt to subjugate the world, the more likely we are to face terrorist attacks, true global war and even nuclear war. Consider that many of our enemies are allied with China who has significant nuclear power. Also the former U.S.S.R. "lost" MANY nuclear weapons. If America keeps playing the role of bully eventually some little country is going to deliver a nasty blow. I know because that is exactly what I did when people tried to bully me. It did not go well for my bullys, it will not go well for us.
Jan
You are failing to acknowledge that "your" president is now on a 3 million dollar plus vacation (at taxpayers expense) when the rest of us can barely afford to go to our families for Christmas.
Very well said, youre the only one i have read that understands the human nature as I have come to understand it.I could not have said it better.I would just like to add that Jan needs to go back to bed and try and wake up on a diff side.Just sayin.
This is a nice article. Huntsman should be someone the GOP voters should be proud to vote for. Or at least listen to? He's gotten so little attention.
His questioning of legalizing drugs I agree with 100%.
I know; with this war on drugs being so successful and bound to be over any day now its utterly mad to begin to consider alternatives. Haha.
You the man. legalize it.
takenaka said,
Obama is a great president. Just sayin'......
then
You the man. legalize it.
A great example of a brain on drugs!!
"just sayin"...
Nooo, don't legalize drugs!
You would bankrupt the Drug Cartels!
Think about the children!
If you legalized drugs we might have an out of control drug problem in all our neighborhoods. Oh wait, damn we already do.
Ooooh shucky darn, (yusay we reddy do have a drug problem)??? <> Heey, you cannot yet buy drugggs on EVERY street corner in Meximerica. (JUST every-other-one)!!! Thass NO JOKE neither!
PUHLEEZE don get after ou'hhh poor drug cartel's funding, cause yuno thaa they hass' to pay-off alla the Local & Upper crust copzz & Polititions, on a "regular" basis or they getzz Rubbed-Out.
hmmm, <> yes, this is for real.
YA, President Obama has made war on the LEGAL medical marijuana growers in Cali. Is it cuttin into his Big Pharma sales? OR is it cuttin into the open border drug gangs kickbacks? How about an Obomanite explain this to me? LOL!
Look at this clown. Pat from "boston MA" entirely consumed and overly concerned about Ron Paul being a real face for the American people. The most trusted Candidate in the Nation has taken so much grief- even when the USA is hurting harder than ever before. Ron Paul has the most experience and has a track record for pure Excellence. He has more knowledge on the podium than any other Presidential candidate in the race.
He is a Gentleman - with nothing but class. Then there are bozos like Pat who throw dirt on his name, proceeding to jump on the bandwagon and make outlandish comments about someone who is more concerned with our borders, National (and the WOLRD) defecit, and other growing problems inside of our own Country. NEWFLASH - Congress still exists. We aren't looking for a God in the White House, Ron Paul vowed to take a REGULAR SALARY. unlike any other President we have ever seen; WAKE UP USA - Stop living in FEAR.
What are you so afraid of? Ron Paul is the answer in 2012, these Jabs on Ron are nothing more than pathetic attempts to scare the American people into thinking we need some sort of Fire Power to fix problems at home.
SAVE OUR HOMELAND. As Ron Paul said, the greatest threat to our national security IS THIS NATIONAL DEBT
RON PAUL 2012
emby, I hardly qualify as "entirely consumed" by Ron Paul. I've hardly said a word about him this entire campaign season.
Ron Paul is not going to win the nomination. The establishment in the GOP will see to it. Haven't you noticed them knocking each candidate down who get front runner status one by one on tv?
I have had enough of reading about Newt's extramarital affairs. I know waaaaaaaaay more than I ever cared to learn. If Ron Paul can knock Newt off the top, great! So Ron Paul winning Iowa is perfectly fine by me. I would love it. ANYTHING to stop the Newt marriage woes.
But regardless of what happens in Iowa, Paul is not going to be the nominee.
So take your "entirely consumed" somewhere else.
I have next to zero interest in Paul. I think he's a first class jerk who doesn't have an ounce of concern for anybody.
SAVE OUR HOMELAND! (huh?)
btw, Paul has directed his supporters to shave & get rid of the booze. (Personally, I wouldn't do it myself).
" ... Ron Paul is the answer in 2012, ... "
If that is true, then just wtf is the question being asked?
Never mind I really don't want to know. It can only mean trouble. For me. For you. For this country. And the Right has done enough damage as it is.
Nominate Paul. Please. I have a cat that can beat him.
" ... pathetic attempts to scare the American people ... "
That is a Republican tactic. They have been using it for years. Example: The War in Iraq. Another example: G. W. Bush and his entire Administration. And the Godfather of fear? Former
President,God,Dictator for Life, Vice. President Dick "Darth Vader" Cheney. Now that man knew how to use fear as atool, weapon, crutch, a baseball bat, to get things done. Yep the Right is about fear. Not much else. But who needs anything else when you have fear.Well there is hate, bigotry, guns, and the Bible. The Right does pretty good with those things too.
Oh, and the Constitution.
Just saying.
Except when the constitution doesn't suit their agenda George, don't forget its the supreme courts job to interpret the constitution, not the extreme right wing nut jobs out there who would like to change it to suit their agenda.
I have a cat that would be your cats running mate that could beat him George.
Even the cat would be better than Bush/Obama.
Bush I, II, Clinton and President Obama are ALL Agency developed for the New World Order. How many BANKSTERS have gone to Jail? How many TRILLIONS have been squandered?
Bush II was just John da Baptist for "The One". Look at what Bush II had done since 2006. This new President has continued with steroids. LOL!
Don't fall for the Red/Blue game, different puppets, same puppetmaster. LOL!
The US is paying 8 BILLION dollars a WEEK just to cover the INTEREST on our national debt....and we're going farther into debt every DAY. RON PAUL is the only one that would stop the insanity. IF we don't elect him as our next president, you can KISS the USA goodbye.
RON PAUL 2012
Riiight Jon ... and you are so electable, Mr 2 Percent ...
What is it about Jon Huntsman that Republicans dislike? I heard Rudy Guliani state that the reason is that Mr. Huntsman is an "intellectual, state department type," whatever that means. It seems to me that Mr. Huntsman is exactly what the GOP should be looking for; he's extremely conservative, he's intelligent, and he's fairly consistent. In my opinion, he has the best chance to beat President Obama in the general election.
As a conservative Democrat, I will vote for President Obama. However, if Jon Huntsman was to become the POTUS, I would not be scared, as I would be if any of the other candidates would win the election. And, I would be the most scared with Ron Paul winning the election; I agree with Mr. Huntsman.
Repub's hate Obama, and want someone that'll really go tooth and nail, against him. Huntsman started his campaign off in a civil manner and hasn't straid too far off course since. Repub's aren't happy that Huntsman worked FOR Obama in China either.
Personally, I think Huntsman is a moderate and might do adequate in the general election...but wont get anywhere out of first gear in the primary. He just doesn't fire up the 'we hate Obama' in the bellies of repubs.
As an independent I would vote for Huntsman>Obama>the rest scare me.
I gotta say... What is it that makes Big Brother and the rest of the gang so scared of Ron Paul....really!What is it.... I will admit as most of you will...he has some pretty good ideas....now on the other hand I will also admit... he has some that will cause you to just shake your head and say WTH! However as you all know it is not the POTUS alone that brings these ideas to pass into law or even reality. It is the Congress and the rest of those ya-hoos that have a say in the deal as well! Fact is what we need is CHANGE....cause the present path we are trodding is headed downhill in a hurry and someone has most likely cut the brake lines. From what I know RP is an honest guy that stands for rights of ALL peoples reguardless of race, creed, color, or sexual orientation! I personally dont care if the man has acted fool hearty some 30 years ago, fact is most all of us have done some stuff in the ignorace of younger days that in hindsight... we would rather have not done or said, and probably would change it if we could! But WE CAN NOT! As I see it he is the one that has for the last 30 years been steadfast in his ways and hasnt conformed to the corrupt ways that our elected officials of today seem to have gone. He has stuck to his guns even if it meant he was not always popular and with the "In Crowd." We need CHANGE and TRUTH now more than ever...and I believe Ron Paul is the man for that job. An old saying comes to mind..."Son always tell the truth in everything, you may not always be popular...but you will always be right!"
Kettle to pot: "Black."
If Ron Paul is nominated, I will vote for him. Otherwise, I will vote for the Libertarian candidate. Jefferson warned of treaties that create "foreign entanglements", and Ron Paul appears to be the only candidate prepared to heed this warning.
I have already quit paying US taxes, and will pay no more to US government until fundamental US policy changes are made.
I guess the IRS will be coming after you soon. Maybe you can explain Ron Paul's views to them when they get there.
Wasn't Ron Paul the shmuck who in one of the debates said that building a fence along the southern border would be for keeping us all in?! If RP gets elected should he do away with the Secret Service or double its size?
When you admitted being a tax-dodger, you ended any hope of credibility. To me, you are nothing but a lunatic and a parasite. Go build a freak ranch in Montana and wait for the Feds to come for you.
Society, even this one that you obviously hate, has costs. Such is the price of civilization. By shunning your duty as a citizen, you are little more than an invader and squatter on the good will of the People.
S'ok. Your day will come. They will be happy to house you in a tax-supported penitentiary. What the Hell, you'll even get free healthcare coverage.
There are many legal ways to avoid paying taxes. I am not a criminal and break no laws. I accept no public assistance, so I am not a parasite. I simply refuse to work as a slave to government or society. Find somebody else to bash.
I legally pay no taxes to US government. IRS will not touch me.
I have already quit paying US taxes
That is a copy/paste quote.
You accept and use public services and benefit from public investment every day of your life, unless you live in an entirely primitive and remote existence, which would mean that you would have no computer or Internet access. Unless you were educated entirely at home or in totally privately-funded schools, your literacy is a result of publicly funded education. The electric power that runs this communications technology is taxpayer-subsidized. If you are the victim of a crime, if you use products that have any safety regulations, if you take medications, if you drive on public roads and bridges, if you ever fly or take waterborne transport, if you buy any products in any store, if you are the beneficiary in any way of the fact that our society is ordered by a system of law, you are the recipient of tax-funded government services. That is a fact.
You cannot avoid paying all taxes legally, period.
NO MAN IS AN ISLAND, not even in the dystopian world of present-day conservative economic anarchists (the GOP). We Americans have allowed the institutions of civil society (our governments, federal and state) to become dangerously underfunded, through a combination of defective tax policy, improper spending priorities, the dodging of responsibility for monies already spent or pledged and the full-body embrace of greed at every level.
So, while you may walk around blissfully ignorant of the taxes you still pay, or of the myriad services you still receive, your status, in spirit remains the same. That society you hold in such contempt and will not "slave" for is US.
ALL OF US.
All GOP candidates are delectably unelectable.
BS, though true that Obama is incumbent and therefore must be favored. I will not vote for Obama.
I am independent, and never in 7 presidential elections since I became eligible to vote have I voted for a Republican. I might vote for Ron Paul if he is nominated.
Gary Root
BS, though true that Obama is incumbent and therefore must be favored. I will not vote for Obama.
I am independent, and never in 7 presidential elections since I became eligible to vote have I voted for a Republican. I might vote for Ron Paul if he is nominated.
Proving my point!
Loving Obama. A great leader.
But John, proves nothing! In the eight elections since I started voting (yes, I said 7 before), Republicans have won 5, and Dems have won 3, for president. But Dems have controlled congress most of that time.
takenaka said,
Loving Obama. A great leader.
dude, put the bong down and look around... get some help... you are delusional!!
@Gary Root:
Respectfully, I do not believe you. You may be telling the truth, however, I find your claim dubious.
Thats the great thing about Ron Paul, Is he a republican?
Ron Paul 2012
End the Fed
He's unelectable because he is as big a fool as 0bama.
I'm not happy with the RNC! They have a chance at putting up a real candidate, yet they fail. Where is the conservative champion? Is it Romney? Gingrich? Paul? Probably not. They are no putting forward a Powell, Bloomberg, or Christie. They've tossed some sh!t on the table saying ... "Hey, choose one turd from another!"... not a good election... AT ALL!!!
"They have a chance at putting up a real candidate, yet they fail."
They don't have a real candidate because they haven't had a new idea in over 30 years. They have two solutions to every issue -- deregulation and tax cuts. That's it. We saw the results of that under Bush -- the worst economic crash since the depression.
Charlie, it took more than fifty years of US government mismanagement to create the crash. Bush could not have prevented it no matter what he did. He was a piece of the problem though --- as are all Americans.
It's too bad Huntsman has labeled Ron as unelectable. Even though John's point has some merit his comments reflect what the "establishment wants the masses to hear". Both parties should have a clue by now thatmost Americans are very frustrated with D.C and their lack of concern for future America. The two partied "establishment" may under estimate the sleeping giant that now appears to be somewhat awake!
Ron Paul ~//~Gary Johnson 2012....I'll support what a majority of our Troops support!
I suppose there are some things about Ron Paul that the GOP can live with, like abolishing 5 agency's or returning to the Gold standard. Paul's isolationist stand as well as many other things mean that if he wins the party will try to derail him.
I'm hoping Mitt Romney wins both Iowa and New Hampshire, which would effectively force the GOP to accept him and hopefully end this circus. I realize the GOP did not have their "A" team running but at least Mitt Romney is a moderate candidate who has conducted a dignified campaign.
The President has been the beneficiary of all of this. He has been essentially an observer and the polls show him with a 50-50 chance! Imagine if the GOP had someone like Paul Ryan in the race!
How about we return to the Clinton era tax code, with some major reforms added.
Go ahead and keep President Obama for another term. It will only cost the Dem party the Senate and the House. Then neither party can complain about Deficits don't matter "from dick weed Cheney"or a vote of present on major issues like a previous Senator turned President did with his outstanding political record.
The republicans are going to lose the house, they have a chance at the senate and an off chance of the president. The house republicans have proved to be bigger childish failures in leadership than any other in history. Look at the polls, people are blaming their ineffective job this year on them. Although to be fair, I blame it on the drooling idiots from the tea party. Apparently all you have to do to get a tea party to support you is say you hate everything Obama does, no matter how stupid it makes you look.
The Gold Standard?
That alone convinced me of Paul's idiocy. A gold standard makes it impossible for the government to intervene in any meaningful way when the economy tanks. Funny, how during the Great Depression, SPAIN was entirely missed by the misery. They were the ONLY major nation at the time NOT on the gold standard.
Entire books have been written, by very credible people, as to why the gold standard is a disaster, and has been so for hundreds of years. But, no matter to these blind worshipers. Paul is the second coming of the Messiah; no sense in trying to talk sense to them.
I would no more support Paul than Lyndon LaRouche; an extremist is exactly that - extreme, and unsafe.
wow, so fake money that is printed with zero value is a great idea? You obviously have no clue about history... The second coming of the Messiah? Literally the dumbest comment on this post
SK-nitro,
So the Government can intervene in a meaningful way? Yah the government has done such a great job recently of "intervening in a meaningful way". For the most part, whatever the Government touches turns to sh!t and costs a ton of money in the process.
Maybe a little unsafe is what we need. Everyone votes for the safe bet (a.k.a one of the two parties) and we get the same political shaft. Maybe its time we shake things up a little.
The meaningful way the Government can intervene is what has driven the dollar down in value! Just because you can print more money doesnt make you rich! It devalues the currency! It essentially places a band-aid on the leg you just cut off....You will Bleed to death! At least with a solid standard currency you know exactly where you stand... be it broke or not! This will allow for proper budgeting...not hyper inflated spending of money you really dont have to spend as fast as the ink drys!
Ok. ECON-101 for all those of you who have no clue:
The gold standard is a system in which the amount of money in the economy is FIXED by the amount of actual, redeemable gold in the "treasury," or otherwise owned by the government. That means that the value of the money is fixed. It could be gold, or any other limited commodity (silver, platinum, palladium, etc.)
If the economy grows, meaning more products and services, it won't matter, as there is still only so much money to pay for it. Unless we can find more gold, there is no greater amount of money to pay for these things, so growth grinds to a halt. The vast majority of newly discovered/recoverable gold is needed for industrial purposes, so the actual supply will NOT get appreciably bigger, even as the population continues to grow. Even the Roman Empire found out how bad specie currency was, especially when they went to crank up the war machine. As much as we hate it, the only way to pay for drastic change is to print more money, absorb the devaluation in the short term and try to grow out of that hole in the future. We did it after the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, WWII and Viet Nam. And, we are doing it right now, albeit with the huge bailouts of private companies costing the fortunes of King Midas, along with two unbelievably expensive wars.
Today, the Eurozone Crisis is the poster child for everything wrong with a fixed-value standard. In the case of Greece, their debt level, even if it was reasonable in times of high growth (it probably wasn't), is locked into a currency they cannot adjust, which results in the government becoming impotent, and the citizens living under worse conditions than if some inflation could be used to dilute the debt. That fixed value currency only amplifies the downturn.
The idea that our money being worth so little now, compared to 100 years ago, is a cosmetic myth. How many people could afford to own 2 cars in 1930? How many could afford to send 2 or 3 kids to college, take a vacation, have fairly new appliances, as well as much of the rest of our standard of living today? The value of money declined, but wages went up - way up. Only since the Reagan Era has real wages stagnated or started to decline, and not because of the value of the dollar, but because of the deliberate concentration of wealth. This also happened before, in the 1920's.
Having a fixed value for the dollar means (because it is fixed) that every recession will be felt in its entirety by the people, period. No way to adjust the money supply means no way to hold unemployment, business failures and all the other evils of a crash in check. This is not a theory, but a proven fact, demonstrated time after time over 2000 years and literally hundreds of governments' experiences. A flexible currency did not prevent recessions, but very certainly reduced their severity.
Lastly, today's world is global in terms of commerce. The only way to institute a fixed standard, and still have international trade without huge capital flow problems, would be the one thing we could never do: institute a single, worldwide currency. That is the definition of lunacy, as evidenced by the Eurozone disaster currently unfolding. Even the famously contrarian economist Nouriel Roubini hates the gold standard, for these and many other reasons. The only economists out there who like it are of the Austrian School, which is an entirely new level of stupidity, even if the KochHeads love it.
If you don't think the government's intervention in the Great Recession was meaningful and vital; if you don't have a clue how disastrous the economy would have been without it, then you are hopeless as far as any understanding of economics goes. Yes indeed, we would know, without a doubt where we stand - in the soup line, if we were lucky.
The reason today is so bad is NOT because of fiat currency, but because the concentration of wealth has left too little in the hands of those who drive demand (the masses), wages have been stagnant for 3 decades, and the reliance on artificially easy credit and abnormally low interest rates that fueled most of our growth since 1988 has vanished. Amazingly, the latter 2 reasons are ALSO big issues for none other than Ron Paul. THAT is why he is a loon. You cannot believe in both a] the gold standard and b] free-floating, real-value credit markets: they are incompatible together. That is, there are exactly no examples anywhere in history where a+b worked together, sustainably.
Unsafe is what we have been living. We certainly do not need more of it.
It only took two responses on this thread before Huntsman calling Paul unelectable was somehow a "liberal media conspiracy." I am begging you righties - for your own good and for the good of the rest of us who are bored out of our minds with your silly, mindless, mind-numbing, repetitive, unbelievable and downright bald faced lie...GET A NEW TALKING POINT. Pick one. Any one. That one has NEVER worked. Are you inbred morons so stupid as to not realize that? Blaming the liberal media may be what that drug addict Flimbaugh tells you to do but check the results. So far you're batting zero for 100. You have your own full time tv network for Christ's sake. FNC. You have just about every radio channel in America spewing right wing hate and more than half the newspapers in this country are run by the GOP. You can build as many right wing web sites and Facebook accounts and Twitter accounts as you like. If there's ANY media bias it's toward the right. So PLEASE - when a republican attacks a republican and all the media does is report it - don't blame the media - blame the candidate who did the attacking. If you people raise your kids to be this stupid the country is really going to be in some serious trouble.
Foxnews the company, admits to hacking the personal data of murdered little girls and dead allied soldiers. Thats just a fact. You would think that would give their viewers a clue.
They really haven't figured out that the only one that they have made even a half hearted effort on is Romney who is their threat. The DNC isn't going to go after the weak inbreds the tea party offer up. The middle will never elect them once they start seeing them. They virtually assure Obama another four years, in a time where this should be a no brainer. If they got behind Huntsman, he would win.
Maybe they will drop them when you liberals drop your talking points. I am an independent and don't follow either party specifically. If you think that ONLY the republicans have talking points, then you are very biased and misinformed. Therefore, I cannot take anything you say seriously. Drop the party mantra bulls#!t and do some thinking on your own. The news sucks in both directions... you know why? They are in business to sell papers!
Not a single Republican has impressed me yet, they all have some good points but continually fall short in the "intelligence" factor. I see no future plan laid out for America. Finger pointing, other candidates misgivings, he said, she said. Makes me want to puke. These people want to run my country?
John should be elected Mr. Obvious! Care to wager on a Republican? AHa hahahaha!
Romney is your only chance to win the White House...although Paul is certainly your most innovative, but truly unelectable at this point in history. The rest are a dog and pony show...can't you GOP fools see that?
"can't you GOP fools see that?"
No they can't see it. People say love is blind --- and so is hate. A good number of Republicans, fueled mostly by Rush the junkie and Fox, absolutely hate this president. Due to their hate, they simply cannot realize what fools they are making of themselves and how they are driving the Republican Party over a cliff. The Democrats have a good chance of taking the House because the tea party people, in their unending effort to make Obama look bad, make themselves look even worse. Republicans have a chance at the Senate as long as they don’t nominate idiots like Christine O'Donnell and fanatics like Ken Buck but --- who knows what the tea bag people will do. President Obama will be reelected not because he's such a good leader but because the Republican candidates are the biggest collection of clowns, morons and lunatics any major party has ever offered up as presidential candidates. Yet the haters can't see any of this reality because they are blind.
bytheway
The biggest fools in 2012 election are the democrats that still believe that Obama is a good President, not a great President but a so, so President that they will vote for.
If you haven't noticed it, and apparently you haven't, under Obama this country is getting turned into a 3rd world nation. Of course, all the political whores in Congress have help him succeed at turn this country into a land of poverty.
Ron Paul 2012
@what happened,
Are you serious? Can you really consider yourself a reasonable thinking person? Do you have the judgement to know if a nut job is in your house?
President Obama will go down in history- Healthcare for all, Kill terrorist and the big name ones, Financial reform, Consumer Protection Agency, Job growth although slow but growing and if when he get re-elected the debt will go down down down. Like it is not 1.7 trillion Obama - 7.5 Trillion Bush if you want to be fair about it. But if you don't and want to blame Everything that has happen on President Obama it wont stick no body on this planet thinks President Obama created this mess. No even you.
The US is like an obnoxious Mother-in- Law, shoving it's nose into everyone's business all the time. No wonder the rest of the world hates us.
We do not need military bases in 300 countries, we need not send American troops to fight battles all over the globe.
We DO need to solve our own problems before we try to help others solve thiers.
Matt
How many problems is Congress going to solve when its debating whether or not Pizza is a snack food or a veggie.
Or debating whether or not to lift the ban on horse meat for human consumption.
It won't be long before you are reading new labels on dog food cans. " Reformulated for Human Consumption, but what is even worse; it will be the only meat the American people will be able to afford at the rate people are getting pushed into poverty by Congress and this President.
The real difference between Paul and the rest of the pack is that Paul places the interest of the USA before Israel.
Huntsman is just using weasel words to confuse the fact that all the rest of the contestants really should be running for office in Tel Aviv.
You know it's true, just listen to them talk, they worry more about Israel than the place they're running for office in.
At least with Ron Paul you know his stand. As to the others... They'll tell you anything you want to hear...
On that we agree but he can't win - the far right will only vote for an anti-abortion candidate and Paul DOES stick to his ideals. He *unlike almost all right wingers* actually believes in less government and he gets that you have to be a complete hypocrite to say you want less government but think it's okay for that same government to order women to have children they don't want.
His ideas are crazy, delusional, and could never be passed through congress but yes he does stick to his ideas.
I am with you on the women thing, I had a vigorous argument with someone on Perry saying that victims of rape should not be allowed abortion. They call women murderers and they are men that are just revictimizing everyone that hears them speak. I hate teabaggers as much as anyone.

We heard Obama's idea and promises didn't we. We're almost at the begining of his 4th year and what did we learn.
Obama is just another political whore who tells people what he thinks they want to hear. That is the problem in a nut shell as to why this country is being turned into a 3rd world nation by these political whore.
That is the problem with the other candidates; a political whore of one party is no better than a political whore of the other party.
History for the past 40 years have taught us so. The past 3 years with this President and this Congress has proven that they are all political whores who can no longer function for the good of the poeple.
teabaggersux, if you knew Ron Pauls stance, which is that abortion isn't the concern of the federal government, which means he wouldn't sign an abortion law, your responses would get some attention.
Sure - Obama will sell our country to the highest bidder, What a Guy!
@Johnny is it poor reading comprehension? Is it that you are not paying attention? Or are you just hoping and praying that by deflecting, conflating or outright changing the subject that we won't keep talking about what this thread is really about - a rightie attacking a rightie. If you're the best the right has to offer President Obama wins in a landslide. And by the way he can't sell the country - that drunken AWOL coward George Bush already did to his family friend - Osama bin Laden and company.
@John
Your attempt at spin and deflection is quite lame and ineffective - please confine yourself to the topic at hand.
It's not just Ron Paul who is unelectable -- it's Newt, Perry, Bachamn, Santorum, or anyone else the tetards are running.
Does ANYONE really care about what JH/newt/MR think about Ron Paul?
I certainly don't. After 50-65 years of GARBAGE A-Wholes in our GOP, we find ourselves in a world of "HURT" sinking deeper & deeper without any hope in sight.
Just keep voting the "Establishment" (that we have had for 50-65 years) BACKKKKK into office again. <>WOWWW what a bunch of FOOL/idiotz/morons/imbiciles. (especially all my - - - one - lever - puller friends) that do not have the brain power to split their pea sized brains/tickets up.
Hey Denko,
Your one lever friends is how Obama got in office. My daddy always told me, "Son, no matter who is running, always vote straight democrat." Yeah, right. Not gonna happen dad.
Hog, your dad was right.
