CLINTON, Iowa -- Mitt Romney didn't need a new poll today to demonstrate that his prospects were looking up in Iowa -- though he got one anyway.
Instead, all he needed to do was take a look at the crowds overflowing out the doors of his events in Eastern Iowa.
"The response I'm getting is really quite heartening, and I can't tell you what's going to happen," Romney told reporters this afternoon. "I can't join the expectations game, but I can tell you that I feel pretty good about the support I'm getting here in Iowa and new Hampshire for that matter. And it looks like we're going to be off to a good start."
Moments after Romney spoke, the political world got confirmation of his good feeling, when CNN/Time released new poll results of likely Iowa caucus-goers, showing Romney in first place at 25% and Ron Paul next at 22%.
While that difference remains within the poll's margin of error, and the count includes only registered Republicans -- a fact which may leave out many Paul supporters -- it is likely still a welcome development for the Romney campaign, as it looks to lock down support in early primary states and avoid a lengthy and potentially damaging nomination fight.
Romney, who has spent just 11 days campaigning in Iowa this election cycle, brought an armada of supporters with him to the Hawkeye state this week. As the candidate and his wife travel the eastern part of the state, top Romney surrogates from neighboring states are also campaigning on his behalf here -- with former Sens. Jim Talent (R-MO) and Norm Coleman (R-MN) and current Sen. John Thune (R-SD) making joint stops today. On Friday, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will also stump for Romney.
Illinois Congressman Aaron Schock, whose district borders Iowa, also campaigned for Romney today, introducing him at his first two campaign stops.
"You know what it means to be a Chicago politician," Schock said ominously to the crowd at Romney's first event, just across the Mississippi river from Illinois, before extolling them to caucus for Romney, whom he said the White House most feared.
While Romney-supporting Super PAC Restore Our Future has been spending millions in negative ads attacking his GOP opponents, most notably Newt Gingrich, Romney himself has largely tried to avoid referencing his rivals by name on the stump. He told reporters today he intended to keep the focus on President Obama going forward.
"I think people want a nominee who can beat Barack Obama. So they are focused on the message and the passion and the organization and the energy to beat Barack Obama," Romney said. "Let's focus on the person who really is the target of our effort, and that’s what I'm doing."
But Romney did make a backhanded reference to Paul this morning, telling a breakfast crowd this morning that his closest competitor in Iowa thought it was "okay" for Iran to get a nuclear bomb.
"One of the people running for president thinks it’s OK for Iran to have a nuclear weapon. I don’t," Romney said in response to a question about keeping Israel secure. "I don’t trust Ayatollahs I don't trust Ahmadinejad. I don't trust those who back Hamas and Hezbollah."
But later in the day, Romney told NBC reporter Joe St. George he would "absolutely" vote for Paul if he were to become the Republican nominee. When asked the same question at his media avail this afternoon, Romney said he had a number of different positions from Paul, but that "relative to Obama," he would support him.

Looks like the GOP establishment is getting their wish, all the other clowns are fading away. (And Newt is having a tantrum about it)
Right-o phinephancy.
He was always the establishment's pick. And why shouldn't he be? He'll be the best friend Wall Street and the GOP have. So that I understand. Completely.
But a candidate who hides his hard drives from when he was a governor? People are actually going to vote for him? A candidate who put his money into off shore accounts and cost the tax payers billions of dollars? A candidate who saw people lose their jobs so investors could get rich?
Obama v. Wall Street 2012. That's what it's going to be. And the media will side with Wall Street.
I don't know Pat. I just don't see them "warming" up to Willard. And, he will have more things to hide - not just hard drives (how about those tax returns). Now, the super pac's funded by Wall Street, well, that's a different story!
Pat and Phinephancy, President Obama's second largest contributor was Golman-Sachs 1,013,091.
Question: Which politician was the largest beneficiary of evil, corrupting Wall Street campaign cash during the last presidential campaign?
Answer: Barack H. Obama. Top contributors included Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, CitiGroup and leading law firms to the evil capitalists such as Skadden, Arps, et al.
If you ever bother to do any research, you should note how many public educational institutions are on the top of Pres. Obama's list of contributors. Kind of reminds me of the millions of dollars Buddhist monks were contributing to the Clinton/Gore campaign back in the day. Who knew destitute public educational institutions and Buddhist monks had so much money?
So Mitts gets a little bump from the Grinch collapsing. No sweat, he still isn't polling over the 25% he opened Iowa with.
With a week to go now Mittney finally gets the bright spotlight. It's about time, actually, it's perfect timing for Dr Paul!
To start-- I like your picture and the play on your name. As for Ron Paul... I get it. I really do. But his libertarian positions will never get him elected and they would be dangerous for America if he was elected. Even if you accept Dr. Paul's argument that America's foreign policy has enraged the likes of North Korea and Iran, America cannot afford to allow a government that actively and openly sponsors multiple terrorist organizations to acquire nuclear weapons technology. When the leader of a country repeatedly denies the holocaust and states that he wants to help Allah wipe the Great Satan (America) from the map, it would be unwise to let that leader acquire a nuclear weapon to make his dream possible. I won't even begin to discuss the regulation of prostitution, hard drugs, or the possible benefits of having the government impose food safety standards.
Yes, the federal government is too intrusive, taxes too much, and prints too much money. However, Dr. Paul is not the right prescription if you are seeking a cure for Obama and his policies.
OMG Romney and strength in the same line? I nearly destroyed my keyboard with soda.

I have observed department store mannequins with more personality than Willard!
I wonder why Willard still can't crack above 25% in the polls...
He reminds me of a "programmed" candidate. Wasn't there a movie with Robert Redford about something like that?
They really don't like him much he only looks good relative to a very weak field, they already turned him away once for John McCain, he is simply seen as the best of a bad bunch, and republicans will hold their nose and select him because he has the best chance in the general as he has the backing by the republican establishment, not because he excites them and represents their "Christian conservative values". He is strictly a utility pick because for all the talk about their principles these people would rather have a political win if possible.
The difference, of course, being that at least you know where the mannequin stands!
I’m not wowed by Mr. Romney’s personality. Must all politicians smirk and smile when talking about serious issues?
I would like to have a President who is more business sense than political. I heard a Democrat Strategist the other day explaining the reason the net worth of our Congressmen has skyrocketed in recent years. He pointed out more already-wealthy businessmen and women are taking office. I realize there are reasons the country can’t be run like a business. But if we could have a leader with a business background, and a business minded Congress, they might shift their priorities and get this country back on the right track.
Romney, too, is trying to be hard right in his campaign. I have a feeling in office, he would lean to the center. I think that's where he really stands. Maybe it’s time we have someone in the center. All of this hard right and far left leaves the majority center with no voice in Washington.
Clean up at Feisty's house... lmfao!
Candice-
Actually, given his record of governing Mass. he stands left of center, a very hard left.
He will not be able to escape his history. Dr Paul is the only candidate that can beat Obama.
Da Noid
One other thing, they don't change their positions either.
Egilman,
Then, he might draw disgruntled Obama supporters. That would be fine with me.
(I looked at one of those sites where you pick the statement that most closely aligns with your philosophy to see which candidate matches you best. I was shocked that I matched up closest with Dr. Paul! Very shocked. ......Well, kind of shocked.)
I know conservatives are few and far between on msdnc but I'm not the only one saying....
ROMNEY/RUBIO 2012
For months in fact I think I mentioned that Romney would be the declared nominee by the middle or end of February
How do you know? Ever met him?
He's my neighbor, one heck of a guy! You will be surprised what he accomplishes for the country when he wins. He is actually a highly talented, hardworking, financially savvy, superb manager who is completely trustworthy and a family man and gentleman. We will finally have a president who is actually on par with our founding fathers. Just you wait and see. Someday you and I will be thanking our lucky stars that he was president.
Because there are so many idiots out there like you!
Romney is not the only one that seems like an automatron on stage; so does Ron Paul in my opinion. I guess its better however; than walking around the stage with a mic in his hand, aimlessly, like a certain Senator from the southwestern region back in '08. I first thought it was scripted because it was so weird, literally, the weirdest thing I'd ever seen in a debate; in my life!
Fiesty Redhead... I wonder why Mitt has a rock solid floor of support consisting of one in four of those polled? Compared to the Organizer in Chief, Mitt really will bring hope and change.
PS- I know you regularly, religiously, post your comments but I cannot imagine why your "News for Dumb Fux" clears the censors. With pithy slogans like that, you should work for Air America Media. Oops! I forgot there wasn't a large enough audience to keep them in business when their news consisted of similar "News for Dumb Fux" content. At least MSNBC gives you a forum to "lean" somewhere.
Are you suggesting that number should be higher? Maybe it would be higher if there weren't so many people who, like Willard, are trying to figure out just what hope and change a Romney Administration would bring to this country.
Da Noid- I would say that starting out with a solid, consistent base of one in four of those polled is not a bad place to be. Admittedly, the field has been fluid but Romney has consistently been among the top 3 and is now polling strongly in Iowa where Mitt's religion and more moderate views are doing him no favors and also in New Hampshire.
Somehow, I don't see the GOP "establishment" willingly picking a Mormon from a liberal state. Then again, I have never been invited to any of the Trilateral Commission, Illuminati or other backroom gatherings of the elites.
I have to laugh at the right on these threads. Just can't help myself. Ever since the current poll results came out with Romney in the lead, the sheep are heaping his praises. However, last week he was equal to President Obama in their attacks (they were worshiping at the feet of the Newt). Before that, Cain was "the MAN" What hypocrisy!
Don't forget Bachmann & Trump! lol
They remind me of ship wrecked sailors looking for any port in the storm...
Sooner or later Willard had to get his turn!
Best part of his turn in the sun, the tea party is gagging on their tea!!!!!
Their drunk and he is the last homely girl left at the dance.
Speaking of looking for any port in the storm... how do you explain a freshman Senator with no executive experience and a resume listing college professor and ineffective community organizer becoming the nominee for the Democrates? Be honest. You miss what a Hillary nomination might have given the nation, don't you?
Phine,
I have noticed the same thing. Now Romney is their guy.
Do yo think the NOJO and Joe fro A... will be singing his praises by Friday?
I think yes. I fI am wrong, I will buy at the DDI on Friday.
Northstar,
Someone else will be buying. Nojo and Joe will be saying Mittens is the greatest thing since sliced bread (white bread, of course)
It really is funny in a sad kind of way...
Poor sheep searching for their Shepard, have now received their marching orders! lmao!
Wonder Bread?
Speaking of food and NoJo, where is that gal(?), I'm in the mood to nail her Reverend White butt to a slab of jello.
Yep, now it's Mitts turn, all have been rejected except him and Dr Paul (his support hasn't dropped) and when they get done with Mitts we will be at voting day....
This is working out better than I could ever have imagined.
@Doug-3665390
Speaking of looking for any port in the storm... how do you explain a freshman Senator with no executive experience and a resume listing college professor and ineffective community organizer becoming the nominee for the Democrates? Strange how that Community Organizer, did what no one else could during W's time, isn't it? He somehow reeled in Anwar Al-Awlaki, Osama bin-Laden, Mommar Gadahfi and a list of others who were actual threats to America. Bush, on the other hand, hunted and killed the wrong man! Neither Saddam nor Iraq claimed credit for 911, but Osama bin-Laden did. Bush admitted he didn't know how to get Osama so he just left it alone. All Bush wanted was oil which he never got!!! Pres Obama promised he would capture bin-Laden and "kill" him for his part in 911 and he got him! So, not bad for that ineffective community organizer, huh?
As for Hillary; how can we miss her? She's in the news everyday having completed another job well done! Hillary is truly rocking her role as Madam Secretary. Da girl be AWESOME! Biden? Don't miss him neither! He be's busy as Obbie's full-back! Making a hole for the Pres. to run thru. Yayyyyyyyyyy! Score one for the nappy head and his team-mates! Not bad, not bad at all!
JC Breeze,
When Obama got the intelligence he needed, he sent the Navy Seals in to get OBL.
If Bush had the same info at the time, he, or anyone, would have done the same thing.
BTW, Bush did more to eradicate HIV Aids in Africa than any other human being on the planet. For that, he should have gotten a Nobel Peace Prize.
Instead, the European Socialists gave a Nobel Peace Prize to Obama , for doing nothing. What a bunch of hypocritical Socialists the Europeans are. They like Obama because he's a socialist too.
JC Breeze-- Strange how all of the foreign policy victories the Libs are now championing are the result of Obama's continuing Bush policies. Not only is GITMO still in business, enemy combatants are continued to be held indefinitely, predator strikes continue in Pakistan without the consent of the Pakistani gov't, Bush's anti-terror policies continue to reap victories in the war on terror, enemies of the US continue to be terminated abroad without the knowledge of US allies (Pakistan and Obama), and Obama continues to exercise America's military muscle (i.e, Libya-- although Obama "leads from behind").
Do you really think Bush and Cheney would not have acted on the intelligence Obama received as a result of policies and actions taken under the Bush administration? In the military, they call someone like Obama a "REMF." Look it up.
Where do you people come from? Bush started the invasion of Iraq based upon lies that he and Dick Chiney told Congress as well as the American people about WMD that DID NOT exist! It was his mess to clean up and, he had the wrong man hanged. Saddam Hussein did nothing to the US! He was a dictator in a country ruled by dictators. His crimes were against the people of Iraq; not the US! What gave Bush the right to have him executed? And, GITMO is NOT an Obama problem either but more sh!t that was left for him to clean up that W and Chiney started. They both caused the death of innocents and should be brought up on charges of war crimes and themselves executed! Obama is shielding both Bush and Chiney from Eric Holder's prosecution. They also call people like Obama "Sambo", look it up!
Bush had no wish to locate Osama bin-Laden and he said as much in a interview, after which, he simply gave up! Obama promised the American people that he would find bin-Laden and would have him killed because Osama took credit for 911; not Saddam. Bush didn't have the cojones to follow through because all he and Chiney wanted was oil, which they did not get. They could not even get along with the military and think; do you hear such uproars now over military issues? Colin Powell got away from Bush. Regan got away from Bush. But the generals respect Obama for treating them with honor and trusting their judgment in such situations. Oh, did I mention that no one has thrown shoes at Obama? Yeah, I know...strange huh?
Now this: Africa is the cradle of civilization, is it not? The people of African have been there for thousands of years, have they not? So why now, in the last century does AIDS appear out of nowhere? Any FOOL knows that white people took AIDS to Africa in a test tube! How else did it suddenly get there? Why didn't the people of Africa always have AIDS if it was indigenous to that region? I am to believe that it simply fell from the sky one day? Your bible says, "there is nothing new under the Sun." That means AIDS didn't come for the Moon or Mars and it also means that AIDS was CREATED; not born among humankind. Whites should be very dedicated to getting rid of AIDS since they created it! Remember, whites have always considered blacks to be sub-human, so if they were going to experiment with human lives as they searched for a cure to the common cold; who do YOU suppose the test "monkies" would be? Do you recall the Tuskegee experiments when black military personnel were used as guinea pigs? AIDS was returned to America from whence it came; but blacks owe no thanks to whites for making an entire nation suffer with THAT most dreaded of diseases! Gimme a break!!!
BTW, I have no way of knowing what Bush and Chiney "might have done" and neither do you? Supposition is a bottomless pit without walls. You can suppose forever but history records victory; not supposition. Suppose Bush and Chiney had not invaded Iraq in the first place. Four thousand troops might still be alive. Citizens of Iraq might still have homes to live in instead of rubble and rocks that they now call home. AND DON'T try to tell me that bunk about them not knowing where Osama was; not having the intel. News reporters interviewed Osama throughout the Bush administration, but with all the military's arsenal might, drone devices, stealth planes, and ground troops, they could not locate and take out ONE MAN? REALLY? And people have the unmitigated gall to say Pres Obama is incompetent?
JC Breeze-- You forgot to mention the difference between the "sun people" and the "ice people." All that is missing from your missive is references to the Satanic Jews and their ownership of everything.
You are scary. Goodbye!
The TRUTH is very scary at times. Evidence is even more frightening. If I am wrong, then tell how AIDS popped up in Africa? Set me straight and put my feet on the right path Massa! What? Whites did not experiment on blacks in the Tuskegee findings? Many died from the man-made disease and that information can be easily verified. Look it UP! Look under, Tuskegee Experiment, and I can assure you it is there and in detail. Whites have forever experimented on races that they believed are inferior to them. Just check out info on the Holocaust. Hitler ordered experiments on the Jews that is too horrible to print yet it is all there. I am the one who should be afraid of you!
Spin it any way you want ..this is still "CREEPY UNCLE MITT" ! Even republicans say they will vote for Obama over "CREEPY MITT" !
What Republicans are you talking to?
I don't know anyone who says that. There are Democrats here in N.Y. who won't even vote for Obama again. Obama had his chance and failed. Look what happened in A. Weiner's district. A Democrat couldn't get elected in an overwhelmingly Democrat district.
2010 was the resurgent year of the Republican Party.
2012 will be the repeat "shallacking" of the Democrats. Barney Frank is retiring because he knows he cant win and that's a good sign. Maybe if rid the govt. of crooks like Pelosi, we can get back to JOBS JOBS JOBS.
Say it isn't so--- Have you ever met the man? By all accounts (liberals and conservatives) Mitt is a warm, loving, supportive family man whose family reciprocates his love and devotion. The record shows he had great success in the private sector, turning around the SLC Olympics, and as governor of a very liberal state.
Perhaps you are experiencing transference and have some childhood memories you still need to work through.
That old buzzard, Paul would send us back to the dark ages, Newt is an adulterer and a liar and more, Bachmann and Perry are just plain loco and who the heck are Santorum and Huntsman? The only one of those clowns that even comes close to being a viable candidate is, unfortunately, Willard Mitt Romney.
Now that Michelle Bachman's State campaign co chair has defected to Ron Paul who gets her votes when in tears she goes home in 7 days?
Creepy ass Republicans! DAMN! Now I gotta drive all the way cross town, (Chicago), and get my old vintage Sherman Tank out of storage just in case a Rip-off Romney or an Eye of Newt should be elected. Round up all 50 of my kids and head for the Caymans I 'spose. Good thing I bought all them surplus grenades; I think I'm gonna need'em! Destroy Iowa! Shoot it to death b4 its too late!
Michelle Bachman<--->Ron Paul ?? ...Who cares!!
....Obama and Romney in the end with a "surprize" ending for all you bleeding hearts !!
I truly believe AMERICANS wear BLINDERS like horses !!!!
They have no clue how to listen and read behind the lines of CON ARTISTS.
ESPECIALLY THE ONES WITH MONEY TO BURN AND KEEP BURNING ! THEY JUST WANT MORE GREEDINESS !
HELLO ! CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW ? HELLO ! I AM OVER HERE CAN YOU SEE ME AND HERE ME NOW ?
Do you mean greediness like Pelosi's greediness??
She funneled "green" projects to her brother in law at the tax payers expense, is guilty of "insider trading" and brought her husbands partner to D.C. to speak to Congress about "economics" and no one knew the connection between him and Pelosi. Is the liberal media making that into a scandal?? ANSWER: of course NOT.
Pelosi should be dragged OUT of D.C. by her hair.
Leona...
The "Repubs" have a history of doing just that... and now you're upset about it ?? -hypocrite !!
For a party that is supposed to represent the "working man (and woman)," Pelosi ran up a bar tab of more than $100,000 during the last two years she was Speaker. How do you Dems explain the Obama administration's refusal to act on the Keystone pipeline? That would bring thousands of temporary and permanent jobs but it would upset the liberal elites.
More generally, the Administration has stated that it will need to see higher prices for oil and gas before green energy becomes cost effective. The Obama Admin. has cancelled 77 oil and gas leases in Utah alone this year. When key inputs such as energy costs go up, how do you think that impacts the economy and job growth? Go on... I know you can figure this one out. Working men and women, and the traditional private sector unions who represent them, are sacrificed. With the modern Democratic party, you better get a public sector job (like a college professor, community organizer, or other public agency bureaucrat) if you want to stay employed. So sad.
Here's the greatest irony.....
Liberals are attacking the private sector .
Without the private sector , there are no tax dollars.
Tax dollars support the govt. jobs and programs.
Liberal survive off the govt. jobs and programs.
A clear example of "bite the hand that feeds you."
Americans create jobs and make America great-- not the government.
Doug...
Wall St create jobs.. mainly for the rich, and nearly distroyed America !!
Now you blame the wrong people for all the countries ill's, while no one ever went to jail for doing what they did and getting rid of jobs that will never come back to americans again..!! The hypocrisy is over the top here..!!!!!
BigLou-- Wrong. But thank you for playing.
"Wall Street" never created anything. It is a mechanism to provide liquidity in the capital markets. Here is how it works: A guy has an idea like selling things at the lowest cost to rural areas that were traditionally underserved. He borrows some money and opens a store. He is successful and he borrows some more money and opens another store. He continues to be wildly successful and others want stores in their areas but that would require even more capital. At some point the man incorporates his business and sells bonds and issues stock with the assistance of "Wall Street." (I will skip the intermediate steps of a Reg D private offering, etc.) The store continues to grow. It becomes Wallmart... or Apple... or HP... or anything.
The great irony about idiot lefties (and not all of them are idiots) is that they champion the little guy, the mom and pop stores. But if mom and pop become really successful, grow and become the next Apple or McDonalds, then they suddenly become evil. I guess liberals want Americans to be successful but not too successful (with all the class warefare/envy thing going on). And if you think becoming "corporate" is inherently evil, what about Ben & Jerry's or P&G or any other "good" company?
Being successful isn't evil or wrong. If you have a beef with corporate policies, then focus on the management that implemented those strategies. But remember, the industrial revolution made life better for the majority of the world but it wasn't too great for those displaced by the changes.
Doug...
Nothing wrong with "Corporate America' as long as they do the right thing for the people of this nation and pay their fair share in taxes which in turn supports our government. The trouble starts when "Wall St" insulates itself by using the middle class to make up and pay for the wealth of the corporate fat cats who use tax loopholes, foreign investment schemes and bank accounts, and their shifting of jobs overseas, etc... which results many times in avoidance of any tax revenue going back to the coffers of the federal govt.. forcing middle class citizens to make up the difference while medicare and ss safety nets run out of money. You might rethink your business model by adding a human element to it... "or it might be displaced by the changes" it might foster...!!!
I for one am glad that Romney appears kind of bland. Obama isn't bland at all. He's not competent either. He had nothing of import on his record prior to becoming President and his accomplishments as President have been to follow Bush's foreign policy; lie about closing Gitmo; increasing the number of troops wasted in the futile war in Afghanistan; started a new war in Libya, placing us on the side of groups allied with al-queda; getting a health care plan passed which will end up being thrown out as its Unconstitutional; threw allies such as Israel and Britain under the bus; did a world apology tour he kissed Muslim ass so now in addition to hating us they no longer fear us; having gas prices double since Bush left office, despite a worldwide recession and ugh why anyone would admit they voted for this nitwit amazes me. He makes Bachman seem like a genius.
Jeff-1570172: Shouldn't you be attending your local klan rally today or did they revoke your card? Of course most rational/intelligent people have time off from their places of employment apropos to the holiday season, but what's your excuse? Get up on the wrong side of the bed this morning or did someone remove your teddy bear while you were nightmaring last night? Hang in there k-man; you'll be okay, eventually. Just stop sleeping so close to the edge of the bed.
That's your argument Hazen44? When the Supreme Court rule ObamaCare unconstitutional, will you allege that they are all card carrying members of the KKK? Besides, what decade are you living in? Here's a quarter, buy yourself a clue.
