Perry: Obama's health law threatens ill patients

URBANDALE, Iowa -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry on Wednesday warned that President Obama's health reform law could result in the death of ill patients, relating the story of a cancer patient he met Tuesday at a campaign stop in Creston, Iowa.

"She came up to me and she said 'Governor, if you don't get rid of Obamacare, I'm dead," he recounted. "She said they will never take care of me. And that's a powerful testimony by that lady."

The governor, who won cheers for his promise to use an executive order to gut the law, though most of the health reform law's major components haven't gone into effect yet. Perry spoke to a packed house at the biweekly breakfast meeting of the Westside Conservative Club at the Machine Shed Restaurant in Urbandale.

Perry, a veteran who served in the United States Air Force, also unveiled a new swipe at Obama for failing to schedule a "simple parade" for soldiers returning from Iraq.

"It really disturbs me that nearly after 10 years of war that this president wouldn't welcome home those heroes with a simple parade," he said, briefly appearing to become emotional. "Maybe it's because this war is unpopular with the Democrats, I don't know. But Mr. President, our soldiers come first."

The Texas governor, who has been haunted by a memorable debate gaffe from the CNBC debate last month, found himself in a refreshing position at the start of the event: correcting someone else's oops.

Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio, a top surrogate for Perry, especially on the issue of immigration, introduced the candidate at the breakfast meeting, beginning his remarks with a shout out to the "Buckeyes."

The home team for fans of the University of Iowa is the Hawkeyes; the Buckeyes are the mascot of Ohio State University. The crowd laughed and booed as Arpaio joked, "It's 3 o'clock Phoenix time."

Taking the microphone minutes later, Perry leapt in for the save, referencing another college team with dedicated fans in the state.

"Actually, there's probably some Cyclones in this crowd," he said, referencing Iowa State's team, after teasing Arpaio for the error.

If Perry feels the soldiers come first, then why does he like every other fool in that Klown Kar want to deny soldiers and their families basic rights, namely Healthcare?

And John, what reference can you cite that in any way, Affordable Care will fail to care for the woman w/ cancer. No, that is not a "powerful" statement by that lady. Did any one ask if she has health care coverage now, or why she wouldn't just keep it.? If she doesn't have it, she'll sure as hell not get it w/o the laws new provisions on pre-existing conditions. He should have asked the other "expert" in tow, Arpaio - geez, slug 1 and slug2.

Is Perry taking his cue from Michelle Bachmann?

"She came up to me and she said 'Governor, if you don't get rid of Obamacare, I'm dead," he recounted. "She said they will never take care of me. And that's a powerful testimony by that lady."

Remember this from Bachmann regarding the HPV vaccine?

Bachmann first raised the issue during a Republican presidential debate on
Monday as a swipe at Republican rival and Texas Governor Rick Perry, who issued
an executive order in 2007 mandating girls get the HPV vaccine as part of a
school immunization requirement. The order was later overturned.

In that forum, she questioned the state's authority to force "innocent little
12-year-old girls" to have a "government injection" that was "potentially
dangerous."

The following day, she told NBC's "Today" show the story of a woman from
Tampa, Florida, who approached her after the debate and said her daughter became
"mentally retarded" after getting the Gardasil vaccine made by Merck.

Of course Obama wouldn't want a parade. He wants the fact hidden that he pissed away the lives of over 4000 GI's and billions of our treasure by handing the country over to Iran by not insisting on a residual security force like we had in Korea or Germany.

How many iraqi's already got blown to smitherines after the poorly planned pullout? And all to get votes.

The war that Bush had won prior to leaving office is now lost in no time by an incompetent stooge!

Rob,

First of all Bush did not win the Iraq war. Second he is the one who signed off in getting out of Iraq by the end of 2011 and glad Obama did. The 4000+ deaths in Iraq did not all occur under Obama, most occurred under Bush.

Now as for him hosting a parade, parades like NY fifth avenue parade are not sponsored by US government but by the city of NY or a corporation.

Guess it does not count that your idol Bush got us in a war we never should have entered and is the main reason for the financial troubles we are now facing.

Just remember, anyone who votes for any of the Republicans running for President can not claim they are a Christian. A Christian does not do or adocate harm to the poor. Everyone of these candidates are in favor of hurting Social Security benefits, Medicaid and Medicare. Also, your Rick Perry has reduced severely funds to help the poor elderly pay their electric bills in order to keep one billion dollars of collected fees that Texans paid for to make himself look bettter. So sorry, but you cannot be a Christian and vote for one of these idiots

Rob,

Yes workers are paying less into Social Security, but it is temporary so that the economy can heal quicker. When more people are working, more people will be paying into Social Security. And NO, Obama never said he was a Muslim. Just like the woman who said if Obamacare was not killed it would be her death. Again, no proof.

Well one thing for sure, we now know you would support a evil governor. Has really hurt the poor yet spends 400,000 a month of Texans money for his security (flights, hotels etc.). Anyone with one ounce of class would use campaign funds for that. Sorry but he is the lowest of the low.

Yes Bush did set an exit plan for Iraq prior to leaving office after it was evident that the war was won but he would have without any doubt left 20 to 30,000 troops based there for years if not another decade. We did it in Germany and we did it in Korea.

Obama thinks he only has to worry about the economy being the Sword of Damocles over his head but he's wrong as months pass on and the reports of Iranian aggression in Iraq continue Americans particularly those that made sacrifices in Iraq are going to be none to happy!

The country of Iraq said they wanted us out, period. They were only willing to let some troops stay if they had the right to prosecute them for any crimes (their definition of crimes), including any accidental killings. Sorry, if we had never interfered the world would have been much better off. In my opinion, Bush just wanted to get back at Sadam for putting a threat out on his fathers head. He did not care how many US troops got killed or maimed. You have no proof again that Bush would have left troops. Seems you guys can make claims but have no real data to support it, just like the lady who claimed Obamacare would cause her death. No facts, just stupid statements.

Bush might have left 30,000 troops in Iraq, but would he have left them there without immunity? Left them subject to whatever reprisals Iraq chooses to impose should a soldier injure or kill an Iraqi citizen? Obama chose not to do that. The current Status of Forces Agreement that provides immunity to our soldiers expires on December 31, 2011. In the other countries where our troops are stationed there are Status of Forces Agreements that provide some sort of immunity to protect our soldiers. Iraq refused to grant us that. Obama did the right thing.

Rob,

An entitlement is not a handout. People pay most of their lives into it. For Medicare they also pay a monthly charge for it. There are also deductables etc. So buckup and pay your fair share.

Now as for the Youtube segment you show, it is obvious that it was an error that was immediately corrected. Anyone with half a brain can see that. You are probably even a birther.

You complain about Obama helping the middle class out, but I saw no mention about all the money Bush spent on an unneeded war that has put us all into debt. Also, you Republicans claim you will not tax the job makers. Well the quote job makers are now sitting on over a trillion dollars yet are not creating jobs. They are just keeping the cash. Give them more and they will keep that also.

You are so wrong. The US government did try and negociate a deal to keep some troops. Since we are not Occupiers we cannot go around and threaten a legally installed president of a country. Besides, we have spent enough of our treasure (lives and money) on this unnecessary war. And, what would we have gotten out of spending even more - nothing good that is for sure.

So I ask, what the hell is wrong with you, willing to risk US soldier lives, many billions of dollars (but I am sure from your perspective is OK but OK to help the poor American worker). Unless you put your butt over there and risk it, its time for you to end your whining.

You state it is their money. To a degree you are right. But this money was made using the support structure (roads, bridges etc.) paid for by all of us. The majority of the rich due to loop holes etc. pay a smaller percentage of their income than middle Americans. Sorry but they need to pay their fair share. Pretty soon Americans won't have the means to buy the goods and services these rich folks sell. They also rely on middle and poor Americans to protect them. A much higher percentage of poor and middle Americans fight in our armies than the rich. When Bush instituted his tax cuts, it by far helped the rich over the middle class/poor. Obviously you are not a Christian the way you want to treat the poor.

This is the same left wing progressive rhetoric that was used when Newt Gingrich pushed for Welfare reform. The mantra was one million american children would starve in the street but the result was 2 million americans found work and became self reliant.

The class warfare stuff is a lost argument. I'm all for helping the truly needy but that's not where all the money is going. 47% pay no income tax whatsever. The liberal lie of the rich not paying there fair share is just that a lie.

Bush didn't win any thing, he got us stuck in a muck and it won't be know for another 10 years if our presence and Iraq democracy will do anything, after how many U.S and coalition lives and how many trillions of dollars?

Also, Obama care hasn't killed anyone, one of the big cost saving measures that must eventually be dealt with is health care rationing of diseases with non-favorable out comes, you can spend billions to try to cure uncurable diseases or you can spend millions and have a sophisticated elaborate hospice network in this country, reasonable rationing must be part of the equation in managing health care costs.

He wants the fact hidden that he pissed away the lives of over 4000 GI's and billions of our treasure by handing the country over to Iran by not insisting on a residual security force like we had in Korea or Germany.

You do realise that most of our troops deaths in Iraq happened under the previous administration, correct?

With the current defense budget and pet projects, we are already spending over 1 trillion a year on our military, yet you want us to keep setting up shop in other countries.

I was personally in Iraq and can tell you, if the warmongering politicians in the U.S. and Iraq had it their way, we will would never leave.

Every attempt to train the Iraqi military ending in failure. They were never on time and showed little to no respect towards us. As far as I am concerned they can deal with it themselves. They claim if it is the will of Allah, then so be it. To that I say, good riddance. They can use Allah as every excuse why they were always late to training, they can also use it when they are steamrolled by another nations military.

Had we not eliminated our lap dog in Iraq to begin with, we would still have nearly 5000 more troops still breathing and a trillion more dollars. All we accomplished was to give Iran the green light to do as they please. Then again, it may have been the plan from the get go. Destabilize the region so the war mongers have an excuse to have a severely over bloated military budget.

Wake up for christsakes we went to war and toppled the regime

For no legitimate reason. Iraq was never a direct threat to us and despite what people want to believe, that was a known fact when WMD's were used an excuse.

UNSUSTAINABLE WITHOUT REFORM.

Social Security was just fine until the general fund crap happened. Politicians started using it for pet projects and to claim there was a balanced budget. The only reform needed, is to keep the dickhead politicians hands out of it.

It's always "temporary" with liberals spending money that doesn't belong to them.

You mean like Medicare Part D? That little gem allows big pharmacy to charge whatever they want and the government is not allowed to negotiate a better price. Nothing says fiscal responsibility like having the tax payers pay $1060.00 for a 60 count script of Oxycontin. To put that number into perspective, cash paying patients would pay less than $300.00 for the same prescription.

Your partisan blinders are keeping you ignorant of the fact that neither party cares about you. It's your choice to cheer lead for people that could give a crap if you live or die.

This fellow said “no way is hell would he let anyone force him to buy health insurance. “ So, my question to him was if he had a major accident or illness, that lets say cost $100,000 or more, what would he do? His answer, “go to the ER.”

Of course with additional questions of how he would you pay for this, his answer was to pay $20.00 a month. Of course my response was $20.00 a month was not going to satisfy the hospital or ever going to pay the bill. I went on to point out that such as a plan of action on his part flies in the face of what his far right friends believe in, and that he would be considered one of the dead beats he and his far right friends accuse the progressives of doing.

If Obama had thrown a parade for returning soldiers, Perry would have accused him of making a big deal of his ending the Iraq War for political purposes. Republicans are always complaining about Michelle and Jill Biden's work for military families. Of course, the Republicans can't understand why they don't get the same credit for helping the wealthiest families avoid paying Clinton-era tax rates. Apples to applies, right?

So Perry's idea of supporting the troops is throwing a parade, while Obama's is bringing them home from a war we had no business asking them to fight. I'll take Obama's, thanks.

Perhaps it would help if the Governor could explain the circumstances and why the woman was making the claim (could a reporter help here to garnish some facts). This would be more helpful than reporting a statement with no context.

Disagree. What exactly is a reporters job? They have reporters following the candidates for POTUS. When a candidate makes a statement like Perry just did and none of them ask for an explanation then we the electorate are left uninformed. For an old lady to make such a statement is fine, she's entitled to her own opinion, but a candidate for POTUS must be held to a higher standard, and we the electorate must demand that the fourth estate do their job as we are not in a position to ask the questions.

I think the issue is the fact that Perry used the woman's statement to illustrate a point. I presume the point was that Obamacare is bad, but I'm not sure how that statement makes that point. Who does she think is going to take care of her if Obamacare is repealed?

Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio, a top surrogate for Perry, especially on the issue of immigration, introduced the candidate at the breakfast meeting, beginning his remarks with a shout out to the "Buckeyes."

The home team for fans of the University of Iowa is the Hawkeyes; the Buckeyes are the mascot of Ohio State University. The crowd laughed and booed as Arpaio joked, "It's 3 o'clock Phoenix time."

Don't think the insurance companies control the doctors? Shortly after the Obamcare was being implemented I tried to go to a new doctor after moving to a new city and pay Cash because they were not accepting any more Blue Cross Blue Shield for some unknown reason. The told me they could not accept me at all even to pay CASH BECAUSE I had their insurance. Not exactly sure why that is the case but they told me they did not want to harm their relationship with the insurance company because evidently there is a policy the doctor's agree to that says they cannot accept cash from patients with their insurance??? Can we expect more of this?

      Reply#11 - Wed Dec 28, 2011 11:21 AM EST

This clearly shows the stranglehold insurance companies have over medical providers, but what part of Obamacare led to this doctor denying you?

      • 10 votes
      #11.1 - Wed Dec 28, 2011 12:01 PM EST

Merely a coincidence. Obamacare, or the more difficult to remember name (thus needs a clever moniker), the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) aka HCR (Health Care Reform) was signed into law THEREFORE MUST have been the reason he was denied paying with crumpled up dollar bills.

As Ryan stated, this is an insurance company and health care provider policy issue and has nothing to do with PPACA of which until recently, NONE of its provisions had yet to take affect.

If you want to pay CASH for medical services then find a doctor that accepts patients without health insurance or if you do have insurance you may have to file your own claims. After searching around on the net, as of October 2009, a comprehensive "first visit" will cost $300-400. Subsequent vists would be less.

I have to dispute your story. If you're paying cash, your medical provider shouldn't be sending in any kind of form 1500 to your insurer. BC/BS wouldn't know about your visit.

The American Health Reform Act, does NO such thing. "Romulian Romney" was the first one to pass American Health Care Reform Act, and President Obama incorporated a lot of his ideas. In fact all indicators are telling America. That the American Health Care Reform Act is working according to plan. It is saving our nation alot of money, and the lives of our fellow citizens. This is another GOP "Carnival Clown" spewing his "Crazy Conservative Crap" (CCC). Again! Old "Scary Perry" is spewing false information without doing any RESEARCH. Again! The insurance companies also dictate if you will live or by refusing to cover doctors orders, because they know more than your physician. The first thing that must happen is to allow competing insurance companies to cross state laws and to allow patients to purchase their medicine where ever they want to ( like Canada ).

Then Jerry, just make sure you have a nice big savings account behind you if you refuse to get insurance. Because I sure as hell don't want MY rates going up because you wind up with some big medical problem, run up hundreds of thousands of dollars in bills (only takes a few days), and then can't pay the bill. For every uninsured person who doesn't pay, the rest of us get dinged with higher premiums.

Because, gee, people are not turned away for critical medical care and left to die if they don't have insurance - even though the teabagger debate audience cheered at the idea.

                Here's how single payer works....

".... Danny Williams a Canadian Provincial Premier (the equivalent of a Governor) eschewed the oft-touted Canadian single-payer health care system to come to the U.S. for a heart procedure. ..... he came to the U.S. to get a specialized heart procedure because: It’s rarely performed in Canada, and when it is, it’s rationed, you could die waiting for it, and if you get it they use a method that is over 10 years old, more destructive to the patient’s health, much more dangerous, and requires a much longer recovery period."

“This was my heart, my choice and my health,” Williams said. ”I did not sign away my right to get the best possible health care for myself when I entered politics.”

"The implication here is clear – when it came time to an urgent matter regarding his own health, Williams, who has been a huge proponent of nationalized health care in Canada, preferred to go out of pocket and out of the country to get the best care available. Where did he go? Why to the “broken health care system” in The United States. The same “broken” system which apparently has the most advanced procedure for his condition available in the world."

"By the way, the man is a multimillionaire, so he could afford to go anywhere in the world. Except it appears, his home country, which we are told, has one of the best health care systems in the world. So good, in fact, he was worried that this same system wouldn’t offer him treatment before his condition killed him."

Your adored President Obama is disappointed that you won't stop the vitriol. he made a plea for people like you to stop name calling.

Sure LEONA -- stop the name calling?? What a joke!! People like you have called this president every name in the book -- Marxist, communist, socialist, foreigner, some clown on Fox last week called him a "skinny crack dealer from the ghetto. But then you whine about somebody calls you names. You right wing types just love dishing it out but when even a little bit comes back at you, you act like poor helpless victims.

If you're so very offended by name calling -- I suggest you tell your on talk radio buddies and your Fox buddies to end it.

                    Charlie,

With all due respect to your opinion, I've called Obama a Socialist because his policies reflect it. I believe he is a nice man, a good husband and father BUT I disagree with his politics and think they are bad for our country .....and I won't stop saying it because , so far, this is still a free country.

BTW, I remember that Obama tried to ban FOX news from the White House press until the general ranks in the press corps rebelled against it. If we lose our free speech, we'll be looking like No.Korea. I think you should criticize the Obama admin. for trying to stamp out free speech just because he opposes their opinion.

That story from FOX about the White House banning FOX was shown to be a misleading and "self-serving" attempt on the part of the network to make themselves look more important than they are...

I disagree with his politics and think they are bad for our country .

His politics are the politics of the left with a heavy dash of centrism thrown in.. the only thing socialistic about him is his adherence to preserving the social programs and policies that have been in place for decades in this country.. if you consider providing affordable healthcare to every American "bad for our country" and/or a threat to our freedom, I'm puzzled...
