Controversial sheriff in tow, Perry takes aim at rivals

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa -- He's back for the home stretch. And did he mention he's "an outsider"?

After a four-day break for the Christmas holiday, Gov. Rick Perry pushed his credentials as an enemy of Washington Tuesday at the first of at least 19 Iowa campaign events in the sprint toward the Jan. 3 caucuses.

Speaking to a standing-room-only audience at a cafe in Council Bluffs, Perry's remarks were notably more concise and brief than at events before the holiday hiatus that were characterized by lengthy tangents into energy policy and his efforts to create jobs in Texas.

"Ask yourself," he urged the crowd at the Main Street Cafe, "If we replace a Democratic insider with a Republican insider, you think we're really going to change Washington, D.C.? No way."

The governor, who was running behind schedule for his first event of the day, spoke forcefully while glancing often at prepared remarks during his less-than-10-minute speech. He took no questions from voters.

Without directly naming his rivals, Perry took aim at Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney as "Republican insiders" who would maintain the status quo, and he slammed Ron Paul's foreign policy as one that could result in the destruction of the United States.

"You don't have to settle for Washington and Wall Street insiders who supported the Wall Street bailout and the Obamacare individual mandate," he said. "You don't have to resign yourself to voting for the wasteful Washington spending culture of earmarks and of deficits and this ever-rising debt that we've got. You don't have to vote for a candidate, who would allow Iran to wipe Israel off the face of the Earth and then ultimately America.

"You don't have to stand for that. You don't have to settle for that," he told applauding voters.

Perry is joined Tuesday and Wednesday by controversial Maricopa County (Arizona) Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who endorsed Perry last month and previously campaigned with him in New Hampshire.

Arpaio alluded to recent action taken against him by the Department of Justice, which accused the sheriff of violating the constitutional rights of Latinos in his efforts to curb illegal immigration.

"I had a sneak attack last week by the Obama administration," Arpaio said. "The Justice Department went after me, took away my authority. However we still have state laws, and I know the governor believes in state laws. So we need him in Washington. Please caucus and vote for Gov. Perry on Jan. 3rd."

What has that man did that is racist? You Democrats have demeaned that word so much to the point where it doesn't mean jack anymore. Everytime someone does something or says something that is not favorable to a Democrat; he/she is racist.

ITM, no it's YOU PEOPLE who have demeaned the word "racist".

Just because you don't agree with the word being used to describe the "whites only" attitude expressed by people like the sheriff doesn't mean that the descriptor is inaccurate.

See, that is the problem with you "righties", you think that free speech, free expression, etc. only applies to the people you approve of and no one else.

By the way, are you a member of the "white only" crowd or do you belong to the group classified as "others", you know those Americans who are not Anglo-Saxon, Caucasian, religiously zealot, and generally dismissive of others outside of their circle?

Big deal ... it's not like the tax payers having to pay over $4 million for a few vacation days in Hawaii, right?

These republican candidates are a worthless lot.

As opposed to having to pay for a $4 million vacation .... for a guy that cannot create ONE NEW NET JOB after 3 years ... even under his own administration!

Maybe Barry and Michelle will bring back a T-shirt for all of us.

I'm an African American that thinks for himself. Thank You. What the hell are you talking about "Whites Only"... The only reason you have a lot of black congressional members in the Democrat party is because the districts are so rigged as to they come out of minority only districts. I live in a district that has been represented by Republicans for the past 30 yrs and it is a mix of ALL races and ethnicities. This district has thrived and the surrounding districts represented by Democrats are still in a state of depression. I wonder why???

With all these Democratic Congress people "not seeking re-election", are we running good progressive Democrats to replace them? With the Repubs only needing 4 seats to take over the Senate, we'd better be finding good people to replace the ones retiring.

What "Scary Perry" does not seem to comprehend is that he is poltically done, and has no clue of what 99% of economically struggling Americans are going through. His cultural intolerance, religious intlolerance, social intolerance, and his economic intolerance of others. "Scary Perry" has no problem spewing his economic themes of greed, and the economic destruction of all safety nets. This is a Confederate States Of American Poltician that has no idea of the US Constitution, the US Bill Of Rights, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964. "Scary Perry" socially believes in Southern Society values in or around 1855. This very "Scary" Confederate States Of American Politician wants to poltically dismantle the Federal Government on all levels. Well if the Confederates could not destroy the Union by starting an illega Civill War in 1861. Old "Scary Perry" will try to do it politically in 2012. His one of many problems is that he is just dumb on the issues, dangerous on Foreign Policy, and intolerant on all other issues. Everyone wave "Goodbye" to "Scary Perry!"

On one hand, the GOP candidates rant that President Obama has no experience and on the other hand, they dismiss his successes which are many as irrelevant. The Perry comments about being an "insider"are the latest GOP version of saying one thing and then implying the opposite.

As for Sheriff Joe, go back to Texas. There was a lengthy article about his failure to investigate child abuse in the paper this weekend. The article said Arpaio's supporters didn't have a problem with his prejudiced policies toward miniorities but they didn't like his ignoring child abuse at all. Perhaps if Sheriff Joe had been doing his job instead of chasing miniorities, the DOJ would not have conducted a "sneak attack" which was hardly a surprise since old Joe had been warned, he refused to cooperate, and the investigation had been on-going for sometime.
