Gingrich campaign directly hits Romney

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich speaks to supporters on Friday in Columbia, South Carolina.

DES MOINES, Iowa – It appears Newt Gingrich isn’t playing nice anymore.

The Gingrich campaign is out with its first opposition email directly hitting none other than GOP rival Mitt Romney -- a move that signals a departure from the positive-only campaign Gingrich himself promised to run.

“Can we trust a Massachusetts Moderate to enact a conservative agenda?," Gingrich Communications Director Joe DeSantis writes in the email sent out Monday evening. "Our campaign might have plenty of things to say about that, but the best response certainly comes from Mitt Romney himself: 'I think people recognize that I am not a partisan Republican. That I'm someone who is moderate, and that my views are progressive.'"

The email, labeled “FACT SHEET: MITT THE MASSACHUSETTS MODERATE,” makes fun of Romney’s new television ad running in Iowa during which the former Massachusetts Governor portrays himself as a "conservative businessman.” It quotes what people have said about Romney and a few things Romney has said in the past.

Ironically, the former House Speaker is currently running a TV ad in Iowa himself, during which he says: “Others seem to be more focused on attacks, rather than moving the country forward. That's up to them.”

The Republicans have serious problems. If they nominate anyone other than Romney or possibly Huntsman, they won't get a single independant vote, let alone any cross overs. But, the teabaggers, who are mot likely to dominate the caucauses and primaries, won't consider either of them. If somehow Romney or Huntsman were to be nominated, the 'baggers will likely stay home from the general election. The Republicans are finished.

Rick, I don't believe any GOP/TPer will stay home no matter who the presidential candidate is. They will be out in droves to ensure that the House and Senate are majority GOP/TP members. The president is inconsequential.

Obama/Biden 2012 and all dems. The worse dem is better than any republican at this point in time. And I never thought I'd say that.

This is hilarious ! What a bunch of clowns, GOP is in serious trouble against Obama if this is the only crop they can offer ! I am Independent, and vote for either party at different elections, but I think Ron Paul is the best this group of circus clowns has to offer, something genuine and likable about Paul, ain't feelin it from Romney and I am a Mormon, Newt, yeah right !

I've read too many articles about Paul to find him likeable or genuine. Read Any Rand's book - Paul's hero. That's not my vision for America.

I'd have more respect for Paul if he'd just respond to the newsletter problem by saying that it was a different era and a different way of thinking and that he has grown as a person since then. Trying to disavow something that has his name on it is pointless, especially when he had final say on what got published. He either wrote those articles or he approved them. He needs to own up to it and try to be contrite instead of trying to duck the question. Look how well that worked for Cain.

@Iowa-Guy: I agree with you 100%! Being black-American, I too would respect him more if he admitted that things were different then and now he has a different view. That would be just fine with me and I would not hold his past against him. His denying ANY involvement is NOT cool!

Newt was born in the mud as far as I am concerned. Multiple wife cheater and ripped us off through FanneiMae/FreddieMac is the least we know about it.

Do we really think that electing Ron Paul will work? What did he get done in all those years in office? His sometimes extreme views hurts his effectiveness. And Mitt? What a joke.

The GOP needs to get real about electing someone that can beat Obama and do there party well.

The primaries have a ways to go, so who knows at this point. I would not, however, call Mitt a joke. Look who was elected in the last presidential election. Some polls show Romney beating Obama. The press has not chosen to put Huntsman to the forefront YET, but could still do it. The choices are not the best so we will probably have another election to choose who is the best of the bad choices.

There is no one on the right with what it takes because their policies have been an epic FAIL proven decisively over the last 20 years. Their ship don't float, their plane don't fly.....and we have figured it out. Mr. Obama may not be the best candidate on the planet but he's clearly the best one in the race......

America needs to do the right thing this time, for a change, and elect Ron Paul. If that were to happen, then the country will have in the White House, for the first time in decads, someone whose primary concern is doing what is right for the country without any political calculations.

What a wonderful party. Only in the GOP can someone perceived as a voice for moderation and concensus be considered untrustworthy and devious. Ideological purity tests are always part of the death throws of any political group. Almost all revolutions have a thermadorian period which often burns up the best and brightest along with the intellectual originators of the movement and eventually the movement. Hopefully America's radical fundamentalists will go the way of Robspierre and his Jacobites, metaphorically hoisted on their own petard.
