Subscribe to RSSHIAWATHA, Iowa - Newt Gingrich was very critical of his GOP rivals Monday as he is continuing to get hounded with negative ads in the Hawkeye State and is asking Iowans to help put a stop to it.
“If they run into one of these candidates, tell them they ought to be ashamed of themselves,” Gingrich said before roughly 150 people just outside of Cedar Rapids. “They ought to take this junk off the air.”
And it is these negative attacks that are perhaps causing the recent drop in polls.
“Watch TV here for 2 days. You had all sorts of people, all sorts of these Super PACs who have been consistently running negative ads,” Gingrich admitted to a couple hundred people early Tuesday at an event in Davenport.
The former House Speaker has vowed to run a positive campaign and not attack his rivals even when they hit him… most of the time.
"Every once in a while I slip when they get my goat and I can't quite help myself,” he admitted inside Level 10, an apparel manufacturer. “But I think I’ve done a pretty good job at staying focused on issues.”
Mitt Romney, Ron Paul, and Rick Perry all have TV ads and campaign mailers attacking Speaker Gingrich on a variety of issues, such as being a “flip-flopper” and not being a “consistent conservative.”
“I am not going to comment on the people who are suggesting I am not a consistent conservative although one wonders how they would know one if they saw it,” Gingrich said.
But the campaign, as the Speaker pointed out himself, is still organizing itself and having to play catch up with just 15 days until the first-in-the-nation caucuses.
“We are still putting our campaign together. It is wild. It is amazing,” he said.
Gingrich, who is scrambling to get his name on the ballot in Virginia for the primary, told reporters in Davenport, “Some candidates have been running for five or six years and raised millions and millions of dollars. They're better organized than I am.”
But in the end, Gingrich said, it’s up to Iowans first and foremost to decide which type of campaign strategy should be rewarded.
“When you get ready to vote in 2 weeks ask yourself, do you really want to reward politics as usual, negativity as usual, attack as usual, consultants as usual, fundraising from Wall Street fundraising as usual,” Gingrich asked. “Or do you want to vote for the only person who has consistently, steadily been positive for the entire campaign.”
The Speaker continues with four campaign stops in Eastern Iowa Tuesday.

If he thinks the republicans are hard on him, wait till he has to face the democrats. I can see it now. Ads with Gingrich saying that Bill Clinton should be ashamed of what he did and should be impeached and then interviewing the women Gingrich had sex with. What I don't get is who would want to have sex with him unless it was for him money. I guess I whore is no different than the rest.

When polled people say they hate negative ads, but when the numbers actually come in, they work as very effective advertising. It's like the people who want fast food places to have healthy choices, but consistently still order the bacon double cheeseburger and large fries.

Perhaps if he were not the author of such terrible acts in the past, there would be NO negative ads containing factual events. If Newt had behaved, it would have been a different kind of negative ad for they abound.

Newt is the one who should be ashamed for even considering running. He is unethical, sleezy and I could go on and on. I would never trust anything he had to say - if he becomes president, we will be in real trouble.
I recall,during the 1990s, when Gingrich was leading the "Contract with America" campaign, that he did not object to the the negative ads against Dem candidates. I suppose it must be a case of whose foot the shoe is on. BTW, for those who do not understand the process of impeachment, when the the House votes for articles of impeachment, it is about like a grand jury bringing an accusation. The person still has to be tried and convctted before he is guilty. Bill Cinton was tried in the Senate and aquitted.
The altruistic side of me admires Gingrich for remaining above the fray of the attack ads but the cynic in me says that the reason he's doing this is because he's got much more to hide than his opponents.
What do you think of the President of the United States serving for one six year term. Therefore, no re-election.

Uhhhh Newt, Super PACs by LAW cannot cooordinate with campaigns or candidates.

See Newt doesn't like any negative ads about him, but President Obama, go for it, with every sleazy lie and half truths, you can come up with.But groups for the President, just as bad. I think that all ads should be fact checked, and a disclaimer put on the bottom that says what parts are deceptive. And that goes for all pacs, superpacs, ALL groups. Politics has gotten so sleazy, and almost all ads are deceptive and full of lies.
