Gingrich: Rivals 'ought to be ashamed of themselves' for running negative ads

HIAWATHA, Iowa - Newt Gingrich was very critical of his GOP rivals Monday as he is continuing to get hounded with negative ads in the Hawkeye State and is asking Iowans to help put a stop to it.

“If they run into one of these candidates, tell them they ought to be ashamed of themselves,” Gingrich said before roughly 150 people just outside of Cedar Rapids. “They ought to take this junk off the air.”

And it is these negative attacks that are perhaps causing the recent drop in polls.

“Watch TV here for 2 days. You had all sorts of people, all sorts of these Super PACs who have been consistently running negative ads,” Gingrich admitted to a couple hundred people early Tuesday at an event in Davenport.

The former House Speaker has vowed to run a positive campaign and not attack his rivals even when they hit him… most of the time.

"Every once in a while I slip when they get my goat and I can't quite help myself,” he admitted inside Level 10, an apparel manufacturer. “But I think I’ve done a pretty good job at staying focused on issues.”

Mitt Romney, Ron Paul, and Rick Perry all have TV ads and campaign mailers attacking Speaker Gingrich on a variety of issues, such as being a “flip-flopper” and not being a “consistent conservative.”

“I am not going to comment on the people who are suggesting I am not a consistent conservative although one wonders how they would know one if they saw it,” Gingrich said.

But the campaign, as the Speaker pointed out himself, is still organizing itself and having to play catch up with just 15 days until the first-in-the-nation caucuses.

“We are still putting our campaign together. It is wild. It is amazing,” he said.

Gingrich, who is scrambling to get his name on the ballot in Virginia for the primary, told reporters in Davenport, “Some candidates have been running for five or six years and raised millions and millions of dollars. They're better organized than I am.”

But in the end, Gingrich said, it’s up to Iowans first and foremost to decide which type of campaign strategy should be rewarded.

“When you get ready to vote in 2 weeks ask yourself, do you really want to reward politics as usual, negativity as usual, attack as usual, consultants as usual, fundraising from Wall Street fundraising as usual,” Gingrich asked. “Or do you want to vote for the only person who has consistently, steadily been positive for the entire campaign.”

The Speaker continues with four campaign stops in Eastern Iowa Tuesday.

  • Charged with 85 counts of ethics violation.
  • In return for his resignation, 84 of those were dropped.
  • Fined $300,000 for the one not dropped.

Biden is a lot better than he was. I never thought I would say it but if necessary if the republicans ever pick a candidate it might behoove Obama to select Hllary as VP. Stranger things have happened and I think she has proven that she is not the evil person that Fox News tried to portray her as as many of us believed it. Neither is Barney Frank. I love the fact he is out there voicing his opinions. I may not agree with all of them but I think he is set on getting the record straight. And Al Sharpton one of my favorite shows and to think Fox News made a lot of us simply hate him. My eyes and ears are open why the Fox News gang bray that it is brainwashing. It is is on their part though. How does one show get so many people to believe what they beleive and most of it is entirely baseless. Now Obama is spending all his time in Hollywood. Does he do stealth fights or what?

Newt doesn't like the negative ads because he has the most negative things against him. He just doesn't like his lack of ammunition

With Government: He's been driven from Government by overwhelming vote of his PEERS.

Don't they have a rule in some states about being a THREE TIME LOSER ???

Well I see the liberals are up this morning and repeating the same talking points over and over and over again.

Where I agree with Newt that negative ads do nothing for the GOP and should be saved for Odumbo and the general election. There is ample amunition for truthful negative ads for Odumbo.

For the candidates to run negative ads against their fellow republicans is just dumb. Newt is doing his best to stay neutral to positive and that is the best course of action.

Running negative ads against other candidates tells me nothing about the candidate paying for the ad. Americans are tired of hearing and seeing negatives ( we have seen enough in the last three years ) and are ready for some positives.

I don't need to hear and see what one candidate doesn't like about another candidates, I need to hear and see what the candidate, him/herself believe, what their positive ideas are, and what they want to accomplish. The rest is a waste of time, effort, energy, and money.

You can't change the FACTS dude....no matter how many times they repeat the lies on Fox News and Editorial entertainment.

Gingrich is a serial loser. And the rest of the TEAPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL "LINE UP" are even worse....except for Huntsman....and the CRAZIES THAT RUN THE GOP RIGHT NOW WON'T VOTE FOR HIM.

Hey, Newt! Can you spell Hypocrite? It's okay for you to demean Obama and your rivals; but when your Rivals do the same in return, you say they "should be ashame" of themselves. (BTW, Obama has said nothing negative about you....yet!) This whole Republican campaign, which began in Dec. 2008, has been nothing short of a nationwide circus. We've already seen the damage those Republicans elected in 2010 can do. Do we want more of the same? I think not. I did not vote for Obama in 2008. But thanks to the Repulican display of ineptness, I have no choice but to change my vote to Obama next year. That's just MY position, unless and until the Conservatives can get their priorities and principles in order...if that ever happens!!!!

I agree with Newt about all the Super Pac and secret money being used on both sides of the aisles. Its out of control. As far as negative ads go, they work and as long as they do opponents will use them. I just wish the ads were subjected to some type of screening to make sure that lies and half truths weren't allowed to be aired.

Yet another “poor me” statement from the pathological hypocrite, Gingrich. He has done more, along with Karl Rove, in turning the Republican party into the republiCon party - one that is made up of cynics interested only in their personal wealth at the expense of the country.

Here’s one for you prof. Newt, those negative ads? That’s just your history coming back to bite you. What, you think the whole country is just a bunch of mindless dittoheads that you can feed one liner slogans and cliches to? You think the whole country has as short a memory span that won’t remember your serial lies?

You underestimated the American people Newt. As usual, your ego and mouth takes you down. You phoney.

Negativity and mud-slinging will always win out over decency and civility. That is why the only "good" politicians are unsuccessful; and the selfish, vile, lying, pieces of @!$%#e always win and put their countries in ever deepening messes.

When the choice coomes to a stammering senile old man, an arrogant texican, or a plastic imitation of a man the republicans are in deep trouble. When the choice is a lying, socialistic community organizer the country is in deep trouble. Either way the American citizen will be the loser.

Sadly, they won't...negative campaigning has been a staple of American politics for as long as I can remember. If we got more info on what candidates DO believe and what they DO want to do, we'd be better off...but all we get the majority of the time from BOTH SIDES is name calling and negative spinning.

Hey JP, get your head out of your arse! So, according to you, the US liked and WWl, WWll and the Korean conflict starting all three conflagrations. Jesus man, what school did you attend? I believe the Germans had a big hand in both WW conflicts, the N. Koreans invaded S. Korea, just for openers. HST, during his time which was ended in 1950, struggled with a landing in the islands of Japan, and thought better of it. That is still debatable. But where did they lie? Bush/Cheney inherited a surplus and a calm world, and turned it into a firefight with billions wasted, 4,004 dead, 32,000 severely wounded, and for what? Oil JP, oil. All your guys are big oil guys, and the hell with alternative options for sustainable fuels, right baby, oil and natural gas is profitable for the corporations and the stockholders. I think you can backtrack to their lies, innuendo and deceit and lack of creating jobs. Lastly dumbbell, the election of 2008 was not marred by what had previously occurred in Florida when old "W's" brother Jeb rigged that state for his worthless brother, and then in 2004, what happened in Ohio? @008 was pure democracy in action without poll rigging or denying minorities the right to vote. You and your counterparts, the GOPers and TPers think minorities have less intellectual capacity therefore they should be discounted, as Bus/ Cheney did with our servicemen during both of their fraudulent elections - by debying their vote due to an address change. The rich like money and power and hate to relinquish it to the good of a nation as so well evidenced by the current batch of Congressional members and the most blatantly effusive and petulant group of candidates. Obviously JP, you lack the ability to think, to allow reason to enter into the dialogue that your mind is additcted to hearing.

WOW: I think I wrote that...But you did forget that the Bush/Cheney wars cost us over 1 trillion dollars....And that's not counting what it will cost to take care of all the service people that had their lives destroyed....But, as Oreilly and Hannity said, "they volunteered", so I'm sure the Republicans in the House will find a way to "screw" them....And to think I was once a Republican!....Very sad.

Perhaps Mr. Gingrich's campaign would be doing far better if he had not wasted 3 weeks of prime campaigning time taking his vacation in Greece? Hmmmm It's funny, he's starting to sound like Obama. "I was irresponsible and failed, blame everyone else."

Ron Paul is the best medicine for our ailing country period. Like him, or hate him, he has the nads to get the job done, and to turn us around! God Bless Ron Paul and those like him!

Of course Newt wants everyone to keep all those ads "positive". He's got more baggage than the cargo hold of a Boeing 747. He wants to run away from all that history and just focus on ideas. But that history is who he is.

Exactly...he defines "negative" as anything about his past. And, "Mr. Nice Guy" is just part of the make-over. Even then, he has problems not reverting...as in his suggestion that federal judges be arrested if they ignore a Congressional subpoena, making them subject to the whims of any Congressional Committee Chairperson. [Congress has the power of impeachment over BOTH the Executive and Judicial branches.]
