Gingrich: Rivals 'ought to be ashamed of themselves' for running negative ads

HIAWATHA, Iowa - Newt Gingrich was very critical of his GOP rivals Monday as he is continuing to get hounded with negative ads in the Hawkeye State and is asking Iowans to help put a stop to it.

“If they run into one of these candidates, tell them they ought to be ashamed of themselves,” Gingrich said before roughly 150 people just outside of Cedar Rapids. “They ought to take this junk off the air.”

And it is these negative attacks that are perhaps causing the recent drop in polls.

“Watch TV here for 2 days. You had all sorts of people, all sorts of these Super PACs who have been consistently running negative ads,” Gingrich admitted to a couple hundred people early Tuesday at an event in Davenport.

The former House Speaker has vowed to run a positive campaign and not attack his rivals even when they hit him… most of the time.

"Every once in a while I slip when they get my goat and I can't quite help myself,” he admitted inside Level 10, an apparel manufacturer. “But I think I’ve done a pretty good job at staying focused on issues.”

Mitt Romney, Ron Paul, and Rick Perry all have TV ads and campaign mailers attacking Speaker Gingrich on a variety of issues, such as being a “flip-flopper” and not being a “consistent conservative.”

“I am not going to comment on the people who are suggesting I am not a consistent conservative although one wonders how they would know one if they saw it,” Gingrich said.

But the campaign, as the Speaker pointed out himself, is still organizing itself and having to play catch up with just 15 days until the first-in-the-nation caucuses.

“We are still putting our campaign together. It is wild. It is amazing,” he said.

Gingrich, who is scrambling to get his name on the ballot in Virginia for the primary, told reporters in Davenport, “Some candidates have been running for five or six years and raised millions and millions of dollars. They're better organized than I am.”

But in the end, Gingrich said, it’s up to Iowans first and foremost to decide which type of campaign strategy should be rewarded.

“When you get ready to vote in 2 weeks ask yourself, do you really want to reward politics as usual, negativity as usual, attack as usual, consultants as usual, fundraising from Wall Street fundraising as usual,” Gingrich asked. “Or do you want to vote for the only person who has consistently, steadily been positive for the entire campaign.”

The Speaker continues with four campaign stops in Eastern Iowa Tuesday.

Newt shouldn't be surprised at the new Dark Ages. “Pearls of Wisdom ... November 09, 2011 ... ”” ... conservative wing of the Republican Party is where the ideas are"” (the old, ugly and evil Rush “looting” Limbaugh with Hannity/Noory how to guide of extremist Republican and Christian outlets for creating legal illnesses, murders for hire, and failed antebellum states with willing accomplices and sham brides and sex tours, another GOP human trafficker by harvesting humans like Esso-Koch whose products kill people; unable to sell - NRA gun/other erection products, hair/other plugs, winter clothing except Mittens Romney, disaster insurance, Nazi products ‘cept Exxon chemicals, crayon-ready denier college textbooks/manifestoes, spontaneous abortion office products, while conserving the flamers of the new aristocracy; rushlimbaugh.com).

Actually we only need to know one thing or maybe a few but whatever. We started to seeing outlandish vitriole and hatred in the late 90's and now we know why. Newt Gingrich. Someone needs to make ads showing his correspondence. Now we know why the right thinks the left is lazy, pathetic, antibusiness, anti everything, shameful. Because Newt wanted them to think that. And he told them over and over to use that language and it worked. The right thinks every word of it. Now that we know why and can identify the source we can start repairing the damage. And it is nice when you reap what you sow. I think it is time Newt gets the full fruit of what he has done. Plus it needs to be shown his total hypocirisy whether you are talking about Fannie and Freddie, univeral healthcare. check kiting, Clintons affairs. This man is past evil. And no amount of invoking God will repair what he has done as Glenn Beck has found out too. God is not there to be used as a campaign or political aid. And as stated in the Bible all who have been lied about will be repaid double. I hope that is starting now. The Democrats and Obama are in line for good fortune for a while. It is a good thing that Newt is running for office as he has been exposed! We all needed to know where the hatred and vitriole started. So we can start putting an end to end and not keep up the cycle. And he wants to run a positive campaign. All that comes to mind as he says Merry Christmas is Hypocrite with a capital H. At least we are getting some insight in todays republican party. It has people like Newt in it.

Exactly. Let's assume I am a hard-core liberal who believes in big government babysitting. Say in 2012, it's Obama vs Ron Paul.

2 weeks before the election, a "juicy story" breaks that Obama had 2 affairs, one in 2006 and the other in 2009. Both women have come forward with all the soap-opera juicy details.

If I don't vote for Obama as a result, I would have a warped sense of priorities.

I see the droids of the left are out in full force today. Do any of you have jobs? As far as negative ads go, WHICH IS THE GIST OF THE ARTICLE for those of you that have more than a 2 second attention span, NOBODY should tolerate this crap from any party. It does nothing more than detract from what the candidates have to say. We've had Presidents that had party favorites kill people in public office, (Burr vs Hamilton), others that fought their own duels (Jackson), those that have lied through their teeth resulting in several World Wars (Wilson, FDR, Truman), those that couldn't keep their private parts in their pants (Harding, Kennedy, Clinton) and a plethora of senators that have done things FAR worse than getting out of a couple of marriages or being a conservative or liberal. Of course with much of the intelligence evidenced, which is minimal, on this blog, many of you would have to put down your IPOD's or latte's and open a political history book to examine how negative ads distortion, or dirt slinging have influenced the dumb and dumbers in the country to vote for people who have absolutley no idea of what they are doing. You only have to start with the election of 2008! Oh, Ozonator and ktlin, test for today - What does L O O N spell?

In the attacks Newt is complaining about..the only thing that concerns me is ...are these complaints by rivals true or not ? If true..then I can see why he would be concerned...the thing is,,,we voters have a right to know the reall truth about each of the people running for the office of our president....and all of them have a huge problem with the truth. They each slant everything to make either themselves look better or their rival look bad...the only true statement I have seen from any republican so far is this " do whatever to defeat Obama "....and so far they have done just that. Prefering to beat Obama no matter the cost to this country which has taken a back seat to this election..or for that matter, any election.

And, his group will be making horrible ads against Obama. Let's see how Newt reacts to those. My guess is he'll be quiet about them as he has in the past. It's only bad when it's against him.

Gingrich is everything we hate about Washington, from lack of ethics and morals, to pathological lying, to the revolving door and greed, to narcissistic egoism, to tin-foil hat ideas, to perpetual war, to attacks on freedoms and liberty -- He is the biggest turd ever squeezed out of Washington. And now it's not just Newt, but his fellow adulterer Calista who wants to be First Lady.

All the plotting and planning machinations we see from Teapublicans in the current congress, blackmail, hostage-taking, poison pills, threatening to shut down government every other day ALL started with Gingrich. And most of all, Gingrich started the Luntz and Rove "strategery" of using ugly words against the other Party, along with FOX Noise and Hate Radio taking off in that same 1990s time frame -- It is clear how things have become so divisive and hateful.

It's way past time to restore civility, sanity, democracy, truthfulness, etc., and for the pendulum to swing back to the center from the ultra far-right fascist theocratic plutocracy we are becoming on this very day. Throw the Teapublicans out!

I find it weird that Gingrich is saying shame to his rivals yet he knew fully that he might get that when he decided to run for president. I don't support mudslinging; in fact I want to have it cut down so they can focus on the issues. But to know that something bad might happen to you if you do something and then having it happen to you and then go whining to the press is pure BS. Gingrich knew that he was a hard-ass in the 90s; he should of known that it would bite him in the ass someday. Glad the GOP is turning on each other; November 2012 might actually be the start of an era of prosperity; or at least recovery and resurgence.

Ah, Gingrich is from the old school. The Reagan rule of thumb doesn't apply today. Sure, there was a time when "if you can't say something nice about a fellow republican, don't say anything at all" worked. Every republican walked lock-step in line with its leaders. But republicans are trapped into their own little corner.

Those days are long since over, when the teapublicans were elected. The offspring of the TEA party brings with them the venomous viritrol from the campaign trail. Like spoiled children, they don't listen to the words of Reagan or any other leader. Its a gloves off fight to the finish now.

You see Newt, you have a serious problem. In order to get nominated, you must wine and dine the teapublicans. In order to get elected, you need to avoid the teapublicans like the plague.

Don't feel bad, it's the same with any of the candidates on the red side of the aisle. The Koch brothers have set forth the beast and called it TEA to curtail and derail the current administration. Now, you have to play by their demands. Yes, just like the House, you are a hostage like Boehner.

The fact is that propaganda works - sometimes I think it's as simple as scratching a dog's belly to make his legs run. How else would the Republicans get a guy making 8.75 an hour to align his interests with millionaire/billionaire Wall Street paper shufflers?

I think we can give special thanks to the etymological team of Bush/Cheney who managed to complete the task of removing all meaning from the lanaguage during their time in office. (WMD, compassionate COnservative, Patriot Act, etc.)

What Newt does not see is that he has too much baggage to be a serious candidate with Independents like myself. Come on Republicans...get a serious candidate like Jon Huntsman and stop letting the minority TEA party tell you how to run your party.

Ron Paul was critical of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, arguing that it sanctioned federal interference in the labor market and did not improve race relations. He once remarked: "The Civil Rights Act of 1964 not only violated the Constitution and reduced individual liberty; it also failed to achieve its stated goals of promoting racial harmony and a color-blind society". This isn't the only safeguard that he is against. He is against dozens others like "Minimum Wage".

Newt is saying this because Ron Paul, who has been running many of these ads, is in the lead by the latest poll.

Gingrich - You better return the money you received from 'offering strategic advice' to Freddie Mac. Maybe then the American people will learn to trust you a little bit. He is just one of the few politicians from among both Democrats and Republicans who have benefited greatly from the financial bubble and eventual bailout.

Former Democrat, now voting Ron Paul.

As predicted, the Grinch is burning himself out with his bozo rhetoric, arresting federal judges for not issuing "Proper" decisions.

He is definitely NOT a republican. (Maybe he's trying to channel mussolini?)

Ron Paul has some good positions on foreign policy, as well as a handful of okay domestic policy views. But his opposition to the Civil Rights Act and the First Amendment is inexcusable. He needs to renounce those views before I'd even consider supporting him.

              Ok Toasty,

The first two links relate to The We The People Act, it has nothing to do with the first amendment nor the Establishment Clause. It was an act trying to make it impossible for the SCOTUS to legislate from the bench. This would put the federal courts back into their constitutionally mandated place.

The third one was a proposed amendment to the constitution reinforcing the establishment clause that the government can make NO law concerning any establishment of religion. Currently the government cannot officially support any religion, that would have prevented the ability of the government to ban religion, thereby correcting a misconception amongst some that official non-support for any specific religion is interpreted to mean that religion can be banned from the public.

It was improving the establishment clause, unless you are one of those that wish to ban religion.

the last one is an amendment to the one above (approved) to prevent the federal government from using federal money to effect the SCOTUS ruling in a specific case or to aid the precedent set in that case.

When I read them it appears to me that what he was trying to do was reinforce the establishment clause to prevent certain people from using it to attack religion.

So those links do nothing to prove your precept that he has any issue with the establishment clause itself, but in eliminating how people are using it to justify their attacks on religion.

They contain nothing about the first amendment nor the Civil Rights Act

              Wanna try again?

the Court's Establishment Clause jurisdiction is indefensible

You are able to read, you do understand what jurisdiction means don't you? He is saying that the court cannot legislate anything from the bench, they cannot alter the establishment clause, the court doesn't have that power. He was trying to preserve the constitution.

The case at hand was one of religion yes, but the law he wanted to enact was to prevent the court from making any ruling outside the constitution. An unsuccessful attempt to protect the freedom of religion the constitution protects. This is within the power vested in the Congress not the courts.

Twisting it into any other meaning means that you do not understand the actual effect of what the legislation was intended to accomplish, OR, in the alternative, you simply don't care and are twisting it to suit a political argument. (which is probably the case here)

Well dang Egilman you beat me to it! I usually try to disregard what Toasty says but his new "opposition to the first amendment" was so ludicrous I couldn't help myself.

Toasty I have given you more than enough info of where Dr. Paul stands on issues, I'm not trying to get you to vote for him, I'm trying to get you to stop spreading un-truths. Here's a few more tidbits to chew on.

              Dr. Paul

Voted NO on Constitutional Amendment banning same-sex marriage.

Voted NO on making the PATRIOT Act permanent.

Voted NO on Constitutionally defining marriage as one-man-one-woman.

No legislation to counteract the homosexual agenda

I could go on and on but I won't waste my energy.

Not that Toasty will EVER listen but here's a few tidbits proving once again how wrong Toasty is:

After 200 years, the constitutional protection of the right of the individual to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is virtually gone.

Today’s current terminology describing rights reflects this sad change. It is commonplace for politicians and those desiring special privileges to refer to: black rights, Hispanic rights, handicap rights, employee rights, student rights, minority rights, women’s rights, gay rights, children’s rights, student rights, Asian-American rights, Jewish rights, AIDS victims’ rights, poverty rights, homeless rights, etc.

Unless all the terms are dropped & we recognize that only an individual has rights, the solution to the mess in which we find ourselves will not be found. The longer we lack of definition of rights, the worse the economic and social problems will be.

Source: Freedom Under Siege, by Ron Paul, p. 14-15 , Dec 31, 1987

All rights are individuals. We do not get our rights because we belong to a group. Whether it’s homosexuals, women, minorities, it leads us astray. You don’t get your rights belonging to your group. A group can’t force themselves on anybody else. So there should be no affirmative action for any group.

This violates the principle on the importance of the individual, and confuses us about the importance of individual rights, which is the purpose of the Constitution. Defend our individual rights.

Source: 2007 GOP Values Voter Presidential Debate , Sep 17, 2007

Q: In a speech you gave in 2004, the 40th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, you said: “Contrary to the claims of supporters of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the act did not improve race relations or enhance freedom. Instead, the forced integration dictated by the Civil Rights Act increased racial tensions while diminishing individual liberty.” That act gave equal rights to African-Americans to vote, to live, to go to lunch counters, and you seem to be criticizing it.

A: Well, we should do this at a federal level, it’d be OK for the military. Just think of how the government caused all the segregation in the military until after World War II.

Q: You would vote against the Civil Rights Act, if it was today?

A: If it were written the same way, where the federal government’s taken over property--it has nothing to do with race relations. It has nothing to do with racism, it has to do with the Constitution and private property rights.

Isn't Newt Gingrich criticizing other candidates for negativity kinda like Charles Manson criticizing Michael DeBakey for using vertical mattress sutures instead of running subcuticular sutures on his patients?

The practice of personal attacks is something the Ginrich champoined when he was in office. But keep on believing, moron.

The GOP Chri$tian Teabag$ have no shame at all. They have done nothing but stoke up hate and fear while looting the coffers of the middle class and working class. A more freedom-hating bunch I have never encountered. They loathe the Constitution -- especially Bachmnn and Gingrich. They want far-right fundamentalist Christianity as the official Federal religion. They want to put the children of the poor in sweatshops for pennies on the dollar. They shriek about the specter of Shariah Law while at the same time doing their best to replace the Constitution with Levitical Law.

The GOP Chri$tian Teabag$ are also expert liars. They lie about gays. They lie about the poor. They lie about the real reasons why unemployment has been so bad for so long. They lie about Muslims, witches, and atheists. They even lie about science.

The GOP Chri$tian Teabag$ rejoice and applaud when their ilk make statements like "the uninsured sick should die!" and "let's replace janitors with 5-year-old children!". They rejoice in the idea of taking food off the table of the elderly to give big tax cuts for billionaires. They believe that no human being has any obligation whatsoever to any other human being, and that any suggestion otherwise is "Socialist Marxist Job-Destroying Communism! (TM)"

None of these fascist have a nanogram of shame.

Too bad you don't have a clue of what is really happening but you will, in the near future. Just think class warfare and who is promoting it. Wrong! both parties are. When the middle class is gone, who will be left? That's right, the rich and the poor. OR the powerful and the powerless. Where will you fall? Someone told me that this weekend and it woke my stupid rear up. We have 1 party that pays us to get back and another that pushes the rest of us back.

I hope this two bit, high IQ, well educated, well connected, no commone sense self appointed important person disappears from the race, from politics, from news, from everywhere and jsut gets on his million dollar yacht with his ditzy girlfriend and sails off into the sunset, never to be heard from again. Joe Biden gets up in front of the world and says the Taliban is not an enemy of the U.S., and there is not one peep about it on MSNBC.

I think MSNBC is the one who should be ashamed of themselves.

We all know Biden has trouble talking sensibly sometimes. It's well documented. Finely nuanced, he's right but in the larger context, there are certainly not our allies or friends.

Is it newsworthy, probably, but it's not a big story either way.

Why would there be, The Taliban were our allies for 50 years, Right up until Bush attacked them

They actually warned us 7 months in advance of 9-11 that Al-Q was planning it and offered to wipe out Al-Q and capture Bin Laden, Then again 2 weeks after 9-11 they again offered to wipe out Al-Q and capture Bin Laden,,,,,,,,,,So what else could Bush do but,,,,,,,,,,,,Attack our aliies??

Did the taiban attack us? I saw where Hannity was saying Obama didn't want to get rid of Bin Laden. Believe that too? When I can stand to watch Fox News I see their slant on things which is night and day different than MSNBC. What I think is happening is that MSNBC plays videos of actual events. Fox News gives opinions but don't play actual events that they are denigrating. I am checking that out but when I tune in and hear their hate it is very hard to listen to. Last night I tried to watch Greta butnearly everytime I flipped over there I saw a commercial. Are they only into making money with their chaos. I guess I did see her badmouthing Eric Holder while flipping but didn't stay there very long. I guess the badmouthing was too much to listen too right off the bat!

I think that was the end of the Newt train because he said that in a debate and even Fox can't rearrange what people see and hear with their own eyes. Assuming they were watching the debate of course. I guess they would have been since it was on Fox News. I wonder how they risked that? Maybe that is why Newt took a nosedive it was no longer propaganda anymore. Fox needs to think about that in the future. When people see and hear the truth they act accordingly.

I saw Rachel last night and she said something like we have two frontrunners who favor universal healthcare and something I can't remember now but was a big issue. Ron Paul is rising and he is against the wars and favors the Constitution just like Obama. Aren't their candidates supposed to be opposed to what Obama thinks. You can't get anyone more for the Constitution than President Obama. No matter what some have tried to lead you to believe. Freedom regarding religion. no unwarranted search and seizure, equality as provided by the Constitution, things like that. He used to teach it for petes sakes. Some of them can't even read it right. He is not quite the same as a pick and choose Constitutionalist. If some don't like it they just deny it is in there. Such clowns. President Obamas reelection is looking pretty good right now thanks to big help from the right. However, we do have to watch for someone sneaking up from somewhere like they did in 2010. Forewarned is forearmed. And they are sneaks.

Memo, Ron Paul doesn't give two @!$%#s about the constitution. He's made countless votes that directly oppose it. Don't just swallow the crap Ron Paul supporters try to spoon feed you, actually do the research and inform yourself. Being able to do this is an important part of becoming an adult.

                                          LOL ktlin:

                                          Freedom regarding religion.

I'll give you that one. It's one of my qualms about Ron Paul.

                                          no unwarranted search and seizure

The Patriot Act - which Obama extended - is biggest violation of the 4th amendment I can ever recall. I challenge you to find a larger one. But, of course, since Bush passed it first, it's entirely okay, amiright?

equality as provided by the Constitution

Unless of course you make over $250,000. Then you're subject to an entirely different tax rate than everyone else.

                                          things like that.

Like expanding the commerce clause into unprecedented territories? Regardless, if the Supreme Court rules it constitutional even you must agree, that it is BY FAR the biggest expansion of the Commerce Clause in American history - good or bad.

He is not quite the same as a pick and choose Constitutionalist.

You're right - he's much worse. He understands the Constitution is a charter of NEGATIVE LIBERTIES. He just doesn't give a damn.

The only way Newt could be better is if he also had sexual encounters with little boys in his closet
