Gingrich's daughter defends father on campaign trail

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Not fifteen minutes into her second campaign event of the day, Newt Gingrich’s daughter Jackie Gingrich Cushman got the question she seems to have come to expect.

“There’s been such a big fuss on the three marriages,” a supporter, who had come to meet Cushman at the Scarlet Chord coffee shop in Laurens, said. “How does he deal with the innuendo in that?”

Cushman, the daughter of Gingrich and his first wife, Jackie Battley, didn’t miss a beat.

“Most families have gone through terrible things, whether it’s divorce or tragedy. That’s life,” she said. “We’ve healed, we’ve reconciled.”

While Cushman may have healed from her parents’ divorce (she was thirteen at the time), many Republican voters still balk at her father’s infidelity and three marriages.

So Cushman seems to have taken it upon herself to tell the story of her family, and specifically her father, from her perspective – leaving no topic off-limits.

“I try to frame it in a way that makes sense and resonates with people,” Cushman told NBC News. “Like many families, we had a hard time and we’ve all moved on. And we’re all focused on helping each other.”

In fact, several times during her five-stop jaunt through South Carolina’s Upstate, Cushman chose to address the divorce issue head on, using a half/serious, half/humorous anecdote about when her father and then-boyfriend Jimmy Cushman met for the first time, at a bar.

Standing next to two other men at the bar, Cushman said she heard one say, “There’s Newt Gingrich. I heard he abandoned his wife and children.”

“I felt compelled to turn around and explain to this guy that that was not true,” Cushman told a group of supporters at a cocktail party in Greenville. “And I almost felt bad for him because obviously he was shocked and terribly embarrassed.”

He was, Cushman suggested, a consumer of misinformation, which Gingrich has been combating since his days on Capitol Hill.

“I let you know that story -- it is kind of funny -- to let you know that there are a lot of things out there that aren’t true,” Cushman said, imploring the 20 supporters gathered to visit the “answers page” at Newt.org for more information about the divorce issue.

Cushman also mentioned several times a different story dealing with a much-publicized scenario in which Gingrich visited his soon-to-be-ex wife Battley in the hospital.

Reports at the time said Gingrich demanded a divorce while Battley was on her deathbed; Cushman recently wrote an op-ed saying the divorce was already in progress and her mother was getting a tumor, which was benign, removed.

In Cushman’s anecdote, a woman who heard the hospital story said she thought Cushman’s mother was dead. “Because she had heard these terrible rumors on the Internet which are not true, she assumed that my mother must be dead,” Cushman said.

In addition to, as she puts it, “setting the record straight” about her father, Cushman also intends to show voters how Gingrich has changed since leaving the public eye. For one, his faith is deeper, she said, as a result of trying to move beyond his infidelity.

“He’s talked about how he’s made mistakes in his past. He’s talked about how he’s had to ask for God’s forgiveness. He’ stalked about reconciling with God and with others,” she said.

His professional demeanor has also changed, she said.

“Because he hasn’t been in the public eye for over a decade, when you first mention his name, many people think about the news reports that were reported when he was speaker. And he had thousands and thousands of negative articles at that time,” Cushman said.

“But in addition to being disciplined, he's now very cheerful and very optimistic and I think it’s a very good example of a happy warrior out on the campaign trail,” she added.

She also dismissed as sour grapes complaints from his former Congressional colleagues, like Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) who called Gingrich too erratic and self-centered to be president.

“He balanced the budget with President Clinton. He reformed welfare, cut spending and cut taxes. That is a level of real change in Washington and to go through that type of change, not everyone is going to feel comfortable,” she said.

Gingrich also occasionally defend her father’s recent proclamations on the campaign trail. One voter at the Spartanburg Republican Party’s Christmas party, the last event of the day, brought up Gingrich’s assertion that he would potentially subpoena “activist judges” to justify any controversial  rulings.

“It’s fairly steeped in controversy right now,” said Hugh McMillan, 63, of Spartanburg.

Just as she had with the more personal issues of the day, Cushman explained her dad’s side of the story, saying that he supported abolishing entire courts, like the Ninth Circuit of Appeals, if they were found to have gone “beyond how originally they were set up in terms of our Founding Fathers."

She then, as she had for questions over the divorces, referred McMillan to Newt.org, which addresses both the personal and the political, and those instances in which the two are hard to distinguish.

But Cushman did most of the defending of her father face-to-face with voters.

This close to the holidays, Cushman said that Gingrich was nothing like the grouchy Christmas antagonist with a similar name as his: the Grinch.

“He’s my dad and he’s never stolen my Christmas,” Cushman said. “He wasn’t that person then and he’s not that person now.”

Interesting, newts daughter recognizes his changes, but his political opponents will still attack on past issues. Oh well, that is politics. Changes are not to be believed but past errors are still today's and tomorrows errors.

Cool, obama thinking that there are 57 states. And all those shovel ready jobs! Must make obama incompetent to be re-elected. <end sarcasm>

Oh excuse me, we are guilty of being "Consumers of Misinformation" when Daddy has been, is and always will be a serial dealer in misinformation? (read liar)

I'm sure he's had a lot of "Accomplishments" in his political life, some more mentionable (or reputable) than others. Don't you think it's time to rest on his laurels and stop annoying the American People with his "Misinformation"?

Well then that's that isn't it? Hmmm. Arresting judges for whom you have a disagreement? Check! Young minority children in poverty into slaves..? Check. A master to over see them you say? Check! Repealing child labor laws in fact..? Check.

Dinner with Mr. Trump [because he doesn't allow you to call him "the Donald" as it were] this evening... Check!

And there you have it. A very cheerful disposition indeed. ;]

Are we all to see people in the same light that their families do? Well, the most loyal members of their families? I don't think that we'd be able to evaluate people well if we did--Mr. Sandusky's wife, for example, is still defending him. Shall we believe her?

The young lady seems to be a lovely individual--but Gingrich abandoned his family. It doesn't matter that it happened before her mother was in the hospital--the point is that the vow is "until death do us part," and that is not what he did. There was a series of infidelities and divorces--he did his best to cut his own minor children out of money that he had earned through his speaking/writing--this is a measure of his character.

If President Obama is to be continuously criticized for having been on a committee with someone--someone he neither invited to be on the committee, nor had the power to ask to resign--when he was a young, rising politician--I fail to see why the intentional acts of a middle-aged man should be forgiven.

Teddy Kennedy changed also--he became the great lion of the Senate--but he still had a lot to answer for in the death of a young woman, and he knew it there at the end. Gingrich would be fine in the Senate, if people want to elect him, but he doesn't belong in the White House. That he needs a young, pleasant, sweet daughter--that no one wants to disenchant by saying anything honest or critical about Newt while she is in the room--shows us mainly that he is still a devious individual dodging the ramifications of his own behavior.

Has he changed? Yes--he's learned to hide behind his sweet daughter. Not an impressive change.

Many successful politicians, CEO's and priests have had messy personal lives. Clinton and Kennedy are two that come to mind. This feigned outrage from the left is truly laughable as they have been so "tolerant" of their hero's over the years.

Bottom line is that Newt was a very successful speaker, with a proven record of negotiating with Democrats.

Obama, as a Senator and President has no such record, but instead has focused on dividing and fueling class warfare on top of his failure as a POLITICIAN to wisely negotiate compromise.

So for all the leftie blather, bottom line is that Newt is a far more accomplished POLITICIAN than Obama, and would be a far better President by any POLITICAL measure.

Now please return to exaggeration, name-calling and hate speech.

american/Paul: oh, please. what would you expect his daughter to say...That cheating on not one but two wives is simply a matter of 'making mistakes' ("oops") ....That "everybody" else does it, so we're supposed to yawn and move on?? The man is a stick of dynamite, a loose cannon completely ill suited to the Presidency. come on--abolish any judge and any court HE doesn't agree with?? There's a reason the judiciary is independent and that kind of moronic prounoucement is thrown around for only one reason: so the extremists in his own party will believe he can do it all by himself. Abolish child labor laws??? So she believes her daddy balanced the budget all by himself before getting thrown out of the leadership post on ethics charges (and voted down by a majority in his OWN party). We don't have to be so ignorant. He's a flame thrower and a bufoon no matter how much his daughter defends her daddy.

If he's changed then I'm glad for him and his family. However, that does not mean I have to trust him. HIs crime was never that he was a serial adulterer. His crime was that he was a serial hypocrit. With Newt, talk has been excesively cheap. His actions tell the story. He is not fit to be President.

If you think any of these clowns are the one thats gonna help bail you out then you are sheep. The best we can hope for is a president that won't put us in a worse place like the current one and the previous one. We are need of serious reform.

I've got no more time for Newt. Walking out on a sick wife has nothing to do with innuendos. Even if he were worth his weight, speaking politically, I'd give him the chance but he's not. He has no chance at winning the Oval Office, none... IMHO. Why waste the money?

What upsets me more than this is the fact that Ron Paul is gaining popularity all over the country by leaps and bounds but it is not being reported in the mainstream. Further, reporters, like Chris Wallace, have gone too far, as the following article points out...

“The Ron Paul people are not going to like my saying this,” said Wallace. “But to a certain degree, it will discredit the Iowa caucuses because, rightly or wrongly, I think most of the Republican establishment thinks he’s not going to end up as the nominee. So therefore, Iowa won’t count.”

From ignoring him, to making fun of him, to attacking him, the establishment media has bumbled from one failed approach to another when it comes to denigrating Ron Paul’s campaign. We’re still being force fed with endless editorials about how “Ron Paul can’t win” even as his numbers climb week after week. Now he has a genuine chance of winning in Iowa, they’ve resorted to ignoring the outcome of actual primaries if they don’t like the result.

Paul campaign spokesman Gary Howard quickly shot back; “Saying that Iowa would be discredited if Ron Paul wins is an insult to Iowans who truly care about where our country is headed and want an end to the status quo of elitist Washington, and those who would say such a thing only prove that they’re on the side of keeping the status quo.”

Of course, it goes without saying that a Ron Paul win in Iowa will be hugely influential and would provide the Congressman with the kind of momentum he needs to claim overall victory.

As the Daily Iowan points out, “The Iowa caucuses do hold weight. Former Gov. Mike Huckabee was the first person (Republican or Democrat) to win the Iowa caucuses and not secure his party’s ticket since 1992.”

Indeed, this year’s primary is seen as even more influential than usual because Florida has moved their state’s presidential primary more than a month forward.

Perhaps if Ron Paul does eventually secure the Republican nomination that won’t count either?

Perhaps we should just hand Obama another four years right now and save a lot of time and bother with the whole “democratic process” thing, eh Chris?

In reality, polls have consistently shown that Ron Paul has the best chance out of all the candidates of beating Barack Obama.

Just last week an NBC News/Marist Poll found that among all competitors for the Republican nomination, Ron Paul has the best chance of defeating President Obama in a head-to-head race. Indeed, Obama defeats all the GOP competitors except for Ron Paul in a hypothetical matchup

“There’s actually a legitimate statistical argument that Paul would be the strongest GOP candidate against Obama, period,” writes Public Policy Polling in a tweet today, adding that if the GOP united around Paul he would have a better chance of beating Obama than Romney because of his strong support amongst Independents.

But none of that matters in the eyes of Chris Wallace, who seems to think that election results don’t count if the establishment pick doesn’t come out on top.

Further, this is not about "beating Obama"; it's about turning our country around. Ron Paul seems to think that with help from the public, we can get this country rolling again. But he does say it will take all of us working together to do it. He's not promising rainbows and butterflies.

sygh - Ron Paul gaining popularity? That's pretty funny. Of all the candidates out there right now, he is the one I fear most. (After Obama) He has rabid supporters, but not much more. And in most ways it is about "beating Obama." Obama and his policies and supporters are destroying the country. Because of the Electoral College, it becomes a much higher priority to make sure he loses. Our country will go no where positive if we have another 4 years of Obama. The best case scenario would be Obama in the White House and a Republican Congress so we could have gridlock for the next 4 years. Obama and Democratic support in Congress would guarantee a further sprial downward for the country. If at anytime we need a change, it is now.

American: I am a very proud republican, and want to set the record straight. Obama did not simply misspeak saying there were 57 states. He actually did believe there were 57 states. I actually witnesses one instance, where he drove to the california coast, looking for "West California", scratching his head wondering what happened to it? Then he also thought Mexico was made up of several states, because he could see it from his house in Illinois. And most laughably, he thought some tiny landmass in the pacific was a state, I think he called it Hawayi or Hawaii or something. Everyone knows that's part of Kenya. Anyhoo, I wont be voting for that kenyan socialist big government do nothing warmonger. Go Bachman! And keep Going!

Paul F,

I see little outrage on the left over his lack of a moral compass I think it more amazement that the far right snake handlers are willing to embrace someone with such a history of disreputable conduct. The left, myself included, are not voting for him anyway not because of his inability to restain his penis but because of his truely evil politics. How do you convienently forget that he while carrying on an affair with a staffer while on a daily basis acting as Clintons Javert. Or the House ethics violations that cost him $300k and the Speakership, the only Speaker in US history so acted upon. How about The Gingrich Group and its healthcare lobbying, getting an FCC waiver for Rupert Murdoch the only one of its kind. Newt had one business raising money for charity and paying a different Gingrich business out of the funds. Regardless of his daughters whitewash Gingrich did arrive in his wifes hospital room 24 hrs post surgery and engaged in a violent argument over a potential divorce settlement. Gingrich himself admits to this his ex-wife is adamant about it and their pastor at the time had always asserted that a violent argument took place. Newt has shilled for Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae and never met a quick buck he didn't like. Like his suspicious co authoring of novels while on a constant lecture tour and year long travel it must be damn hard to get into delivering 1 or 2 novels a year which usually takes an accomplished full time author that long or theat his coauthor happens to write the exact same genre and that the novels are stylisticallyand contextually indistinguishable from his other works.

Most recently Newt thinks we should murder foreign scientists and engineers( Iran ) make poor kids clean bathrooms and advocates the forced rounding up of Federal Judges who don't rule as the president sees fit. I doubt if copying the Pinocet playbook will sit well with the general electorate. A decent research staff could keep Newts negatives on the airwaves for months at a time without ever repeating one.

Almost every child has a somewhat idealized view of their parents, more so I think girls and their fathers, but to give their romanticized rememberances too much creedance would be a mistake.

The point of the whole thing is this: Democrats don't see a person running for office and immediately ask if we agree with his marital situation and therefore judge his character as a politician based upon his personal life (see: Clinton, Bill). Republicans make it a point to "flaunt" their moral superiority because they feel like they are closer to their god's rules and regulations thereby making it supreme hypocricy whenever one of "their own" shows up as breaking the moral codes they think to which they should be held (see: Craig, Larry and Gingrich, Newt).

Obama never said he would end the Patriot Act. Actually, he said exactly the opposite. I remember very clearly because, like most liberals, I was shocked and angry over the way Bush abused civil liberties. In the beginning I was eager to see Obama win because I thought he WOULD get rid of the Patriot Act. Then, during his 2008 campaign he was very clear in his support of it. Before the election I actually considered not voting for him because I was so angry about his support of the Patriot Act.

Before we cheat on a spouse, we should remember those closest that we will be hurting for the rest of their lives. I hope the best for Gingrich and his family, but I know Gingrich is never going to win. I just hope that this process can help make life a little better when all is said and done for Gingrich's family to hurt a little less from what Gingrich has done to them.

Most gay folk are working too hard to get the right to marry to mess it up any more than Newt has. Between the way Hollywood and a lot of heterosexuals treat marriage, it can't get any more beaten down. Just because one is gay doesn't mean that they have any less of a commitment to their spouses than a heterosexual. Maybe if they forget how hard it is to get that right, but right now, the only couples you will see are committed to a long term relationship... well, except for the celeb ones. BTW, I'm straight and in a marriage, it's just that my Church believes that ALL people are equal regardless of their political, sexual, and national preferences. No, it's not a cult; in fact, it's the same religion a majority of the founding Fathers were.

...you're a little confused--Steve Jobs and John Lennon weren't elected to represent the interests of the American people. Don't want to work for Steve Jobs, you didn't have to. Don't want to buy John Lennon's records, you didn't have to. Hardly a defense for the "values" party that one of your own cheated on each wife before landing up with number 3 now is it...but if you want to hilariously claim that it's not HIS values that anyone your party was claiming everyone needs to adhere to...you go right ahead. See how that works for ya.

Gen X/Y, do not participate in repubs or dems primaries, only vote in the general elections... also, do not join and or sever all affiliations with said political parties... and absolutely, do not donate to the political party itself, only to the individual (not a repub or dem, if possible)

I always thought since he was trying to be President he had changed to a new man. Of course God helped him and showed him the path. Now if he can just keep up this front through the election is the answer to all of his prayers now. Then he can regress back to the greedy, self-centered, horny SOB he always was. He then can not only be unfaithful to his wife but to Americans also.

nobody cares who newt is cheating on or with.

what we care about is how the republican party bills itself as the protector of religion, morals, marriage and whatnot. but they are more than happy to throw their principles out the window when it is politically expedient.

newt being the front runner tells you more about the republican base and the republican party than it tells you about newt.

    Dave,

How exactly did Newt do that by passing Clintons budgets? Do you have any idea how the budget process works. In the budget process the Whitehouse submits to the OBM and presents it to Congress the House under Gingrich did not rewrite the budget or pass their own. The surplus was created by a democratic House and Senate passing a tax hike on the top 10% or so of earners and launching a stimulus pakage. When Newt reared his bulbous head his agenda and his party they tried to delay much like this Congress but when they shut down the government all blame was placed on their heads. Unless you are saying the Republicans raised taxes on the wealthy and launched a stimulus package you are grossly misinformed as to how government and the budget work.

Newt was working a budget, while Clinton was eating McDonald's and having relations with Monica in the Oval Office.

That's only because Clinton promised to veto an UNBALANCED budget, so what did Newt & Co. do? They passed an unbalanced budget. Clinton vetoed it, and the US Gov't shut down for a week.

    Do you remember? I do.

Clinton was the last President to balance a budget, and he did so while running roughshod over Newt.

I am tired of all the blithering. Rightous indignation from the right only applies to democrats. Think Clinton, Hart, or Teddy Kenedy. Indiscretions from the right are just minor items not worthy of discussion. Think Newt, Cain, Haggerty, Jimmy Swaggart. Lying by a republican is not an issue - think W, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Nixon.

So people, let's get it straight. Morality issues are only important when they happen to democrats.

    Then who did?

I am saying Newt is the only person running in this campaign that did.

President's do not pass budgets through Congress, congressman do. I never said Clinton didn't sign it or didn't negotiate it. Lighten up.

      #2.29 - Wed Dec 21, 2011 6:57 PM EST

Please read the message you replied to. Specifically, this is what you were replying to:

I suppose you give yourself credit for eating a wonderful meal, instead of giving the chef credit for preparing a wonderful meal.

The issue isn't whether the restaurant patron ate the wonderful meal or not, but rather who actually prepared the wonderful meal - that's where the credit for the meal being wonderful goes.

You've apparently forgotten how this part of the thread got started. It was your off-target statement, "Newt is the only man standing who ever balanced a budget and actually created a surplus in the US for decades." You didn't say that Newt was the only man who ever "passed" a balanced budget. Even that would be incorrect, since Newt was merely the leader of one of the houses of Congress. It was Congress itself that passed that budget.

It was rightfully pointed out to you by Jim that it was President Clinton's budget that was balanced. You objected to that; based on the manipulations of logic you're trying to apply now, you should have just agreed with Jim.

      Thanks for the entertainment.

So when confronted with uncomfortable truths, your response is to get flippant and try to divert attention away from what you don't want to grant. Okay that's fine; not a problem. However, please don't deceive yourself into thinking anyone is really being tricked by what you're doing.

On the topic: I would prefer a Bill Clinton-like leader. I think someone like that could both embody the compassion and consideration of others that President Obama covers well, as well as President Obama does, and also do a better job than President Obama at cleaning up the messes left behind by the Bush administration, both fiscal and with regard to foreign relations.

LOL. Who is talking about Jim? I responded to your (12/21/11-8:25am) gourmet meal comment, but it looks like you need to send it back to the kitchen.

In regards to my response to Jim, I objected to his dismissal of Newt's participation in the budget process. Presidents do not pass budgets through the House of Representatives, representatives do. If Presidents could, Obama would have already increased his credit card limit, passed his own budget and complete the destruction of our economy.

Getting back to my original point, Newt is the only man in the race that actually passed a balanced budget through the House of Representatives.

Of course, Newt could have blocked the "Clinton" budgets that came before the House...but that would be impossible since he didn't!

            #2.35 - Thu Dec 22, 2011 3:47 PM EST

            Who is talking about Jim?

Your response to Jim is the entire context of your discussion with me.

In regards to my response to Jim, I objected to his dismissal of Newt's participation in the budget process.

He didn't dismiss Newt's participation. He placed credit where credit is due: President Clinton.

I'll have to see if you've made any comments about this year's budget, given that the Speaker is a Republican. Do you place all the blame for all the spending and all the taxes squarely on Boehner?

Getting back to my original point, Newt is the only man in the race that actually passed a balanced budget through the House of Representatives.

Then perhaps he should run for that office.

Either vote 3rd Party or for Ron Paul, otherwise you're supporting war planned until 2024 in Afghanistan, torture, warrantless wiretaps, self-written search warrants by federal agents, and if the NDAA takes effect indefinite detention for U.S. citizens without so much as a trial.

He believes we should trade & do business with other countries, just not try to run them. Newt is pig in oh so many ways. He's a pig with tax-payer money (big government spending), he's a pig with bling(think tiffany's), he's a pig with women (cast-off wives, philandering), he's a pig with votes (unreliable on important issues).

And keep your innocent children out of it, you selfish pig!!!

That crap was debunked years ago... Another idiot hasn't done any research himself just wants to spew more of someone else's hate.

To anyone that wants to claim that Dr Paul is a racist based upon newsletters posted in his name years ago, they were debunked years ago. I have a few links for you to peruse before deciding that he is a racist.....

Yeah, we certainly haven't had any democratic presidents in recent memory cheating on their wives "IN THE WHITEHOUSE" while diplomats were waiting on him. Oh, wait, that wasn't cheating. It wasn't sex after all. It was only a bj. The presidential stain lasts forever, but he was democrat so let's give him a free ride.

You provide an excellent example of hypocrisy, although probably not what you intended. As you recall, one of the lead stone-throwers in the MonicaGate scandal was Gingrich--WHO WAS HIMSELF HAVING AN AFFAIR at the same time as Clinton. So, I think it is YOU trying to hand out "free rides" and hypocrisy to those who cum, er come, on your side of the political aisle.

Funny thing is, Clinton cheated and got off during work hours at work. How many of us would survive that little revelation at our places of employment?

There is a difference between Clinton and Newt. Newt is a republican--the party of family values. Clinton is not. Newt led the bandwagon against Clinton while having his own affair. And in regard to Clinton, his sex live should never have come up. They were investigating whitewater. When they did not find anything on Clinton there, they went on a witch hunt.

Clinton, you'll recall, was brought up on impeachment charges, so I hardly think he 'got away' with anything. Newt a hell of a speaker?? Did you also forget about shutting down the government on a fit of pique and being convicted of ethics charges (losing the vote even in his OWN party). How quickly we forget.

While Newt was "leading the charge" against Clinton, he was "the pot calling the kettle black", having his own affair with the woman to whom he is now married. That would really be classless, if in the longest of odds he should become president, to have a first lady who was having an affair with the Speaker (Newt) while he was busy trying to impeach Clinton. I'm surprised he would even consider having his mistress during his glory days in the House, become the first lady. If it was an impeachable offense for Clinton (in Newt's eyes) why would he even consider dragging this through the mud again. Has anyone noticed how much she looks like Cindy McCain. These guys seem to have to have a phony "Barbie doll" hanging on their arm, call them "trophy wives?" Wonder what she (and Cindy) would look like without their bottle of bleach; maybe a little more natural and even human instead of store-front mannikin with the fixed smile and plastered hairdo.

As someone who has lived awhile, I can understand and sympathize with Newt. Who hasn't made dumb, irrational mistakes in life? If there is love in a family, forgiveness and redemption are possible. If that is the case, then good for Newt. I am, however, bothered by his irratic personality which does not change. Newt has proven to be smart but also proven to be a terrible leader and administrator. In that regard, I think he is dangerous and reckless and, like Bush, would likely involve us in another disastrous foreign adventure, probably with Iran. Sorry, but I'm sticking with the Prez this time.

He was elected by the media and the liberal socialists, having no experience at all and is proving to be the worst President ever. If only he would save face once and a while and admit when he is wrong instead of acting like the arrogant college professor that he is.

Any of the Republican would do a better job, because they care about the country, Obama only cares about himself. He is the Commader in Hypocracy. Attacking millionaire on Wall Stree... What about the millionaire elites in Hollywood, Sports and himself.

I here he is on another vacation (17 days to Hawaii), him and the Mrs took separate 747's again. I guess I will run us in the ground one way or another. BTW, did he ever take long vacations to Hawaii when he lived in Chicago?

Why is it that you Republicans bash Obama and say "he's running the country into the ground" and yet provide no factual reasons for your claims? The country was already ruined by 8 years of the previous administration. How dumb can you be to think 1 man can fix this mess in 3 years. Especially with the worst Congress in the history of America run by Republican Tea Party members, who have no idea about economics.

How can you fix the economy when you have people like John Boener running Congress, who when asked if not extending the payroll tax cut to 160 million middle class workers would hurt the economy...he says "I don't know, I'm not an economist".

Of course it will hurt the economy. You don't need to be a genious to realize people having less money to spend means.....they will spend less money. Economics is based on supply and demand. Our government, in the form of the Bush tax cuts, have been catering to the suppliers for over 10 years now. And the only thing we have to show for it is higher unemployment and masive debt. These "Trickle-down economics" have proven to not work. These are Republican policies not Obama's.

Give Obama the Congress he deserves and watch how the country and the economy gets better.

Someone should ask Newt's daughter why he wants to deny gays the right to marry as often as he has done.

Or is it simply that Newt thinks he deserves special rights and privileges?

Well, three different marriages; three different religions; and at least two different positions on every significant issue.

Now...WHICH of those different facts is "misinformation?" and if we look at any one of them, which is the "real" Newt?

In reality there is no substance to Gingrich, and what his former GOP colleagues have said seems to ring most true. Gingrich is loyal to only one thing --- Newt Gingrich! There is no political position he will not betray or bastardize, no principle on which he will not prevaricate if it brings in money and feeds Newt's ego. And make no mistake, that ego is dangerous and megalo-maniacal. He openly states that he would feel free to ignore the Supreme Court rulings, if he disagrees with them. There is irony because his oath of office is to uphold the Constitution, which by the way clearly states that the Supreme Court is the ultimate interpreter of the law. Congress can CHANGE the law, but as long as it is the law the Supreme Court has final say, NOT newt Gingrich. He is also wrong on his historical facts about prior Presidents ignoring Supreme Court rulings. This is an issue of rule of law because there would be no standards as to when he might choose to follow or choose to ignore a Supreme Court ruling. Further, if he can ignore the Supreme Court, then certainly he would feel free to ignore any act of Congress he does not like.

Newt is basically asking to be elected dictator. This is a prime example of the mental instability and lack of judgment that got him kicked out of the Speaker position, only it is worse now.

Some Democrats say that the GOP should nominate Newt in order to assure an Obama victory. But let us not forget 2000 when a lamebrain was nominated by the GOP and through corruption in voting processes in Florida and Ohio the President was elected without the popular vote. So this is not a game that should be played. Diebold voting machines are still defective and easily hacked, so there is no assurance that another election will not be manipulated if it is close.

If you want a wacko, then pick Bachmann. She is ignorant and bat s@#t crazy, but not nearly as dangerous as Gingrich.

The position which will get him the most mileage in the given moment is the one he will adopt. He is a bright man, and a shrewd operator, and can do a lot for a constituency that is similar to himself--but he is not a leader for the rather diverse group of people who make up the US.

                          @ Underground Sanity,

Newt being more dangerous than Bachmann in your opinion is only because he is much more ahead in the polls. Any possible threat to Obama must be squashed immediately, in your opinion. Meanwhile POTUS hasn't made the lives of Main Street one bit better and in fact worse than ever.

Are we better off off then were before he took office and refrain from the Bush beating as it no longer works three years later.

                          Tad-401841,

It took Bush 8 years to ruin the country...it will take more than 3 years to fix it. Even more with the do-nothing Congress that our President has to work with.

Tad - we are on the road to fixing the mess Bush/Cheney left. No one can do that in one or two terms. It will take multiple Presidents to fix the quagmire the GOP left. And, while the GOP is blocking every attempt to repair their damage it makes it more difficult. Anyone with a brain knows this was never going to be a quick fix. We have two wars we paid for with lives and money we could not afford and little George spent like Daddy was paying for it.

Let the Liberals get complacent, as they gloat about the guaranteed second term.... Then WHAM!... A whole NEW Republican... who's spotless.

To truly understand the current Republican Party (otherwise known as "The RepubliClowns") you have to read Melody Beattie's book "Co-Dependent No More" and realize the pattern of dependency and abuse.

People with dependencies such as drugs, alcohol, sex, or gambling (or huge egos) abuse their authority and relationships to make their co-dependents feel guilty and coerce them into believing the crap they are doing and saying. They also don't know when they are lying.

It is why you have as spokespeople for the "ConservaNuts" people like alcoholic Glenn Beck, drug addict Rush Limbaugh, sex addict Dick Morris, gambling addict Bill Bennett, adulterer Newt Gingrich, tramp Sarah Palin, and misogynist Bill O'Reilly.

Or as alcoholic George W. Bush said, "You can fool some of the people all of the time...."

It is why Sarah Palin's bastard grandson is the poster child for RepubliClown "morality."

Being a ConservaNut or RepubliClown is no longer a matter of politics but a psychopathic (deranged) medical condition.

Or in the case of Gingrich, once a jerk, always a jerk.

When a politician (read Palin) and/or her family use thier children (read daughter) to advance their career then it is the politician and/or celebrity that is placing that child in the limelight and making it fair game. 'Shame on Palin and her daughter for using that child to further their careers.

No one said it was the child's fault. I believe the child's mother and grand mother were being called out. Sorry cutie, but I have to agree with the others. When you throw your personal life out there you invite the world to pick it apart. It's a shame for the kids, maybe their whore mothers should have thought about that before they pimped their kids to make a quick buck.

26,000 troops in S. Korea: what's that cost the taxpayers? Or consider the cost of troops stationed in S. Korea alone since 1953?

I know how I'd deal with a troop withdrawal: pay off some debt and/or defend the southern border of the US. Why just the payroll of 26,000 troops spent inside the US would bolster the economy in those states along the border if that's where the troops were sent, not to mention how many jobs would be created to support the 26,000 troops.

Candidates' pasts are completely relevant and fair game. Regardless of party if someone has baggage it should be looked into and discussed. Furthermore, if you want to stick to recent history regarding newt's character then how about his open accounts at tiffany's? How can one claim to be closer to God if he spends a half million on jewelry? Or how about we look into his whole campaign staff leaving because they say that his current wife is too controlling and wants to run the show when she doesnt know her left foot from right? To those who think hillary had too large a voice in the Clinton whitehouse, what do you think this woman will be like?

Presidents need to be able to handle the pressure. Somehow I see the first wife winning the debate---without ever having to open her mouth.

His mother got pregnant with him at 16 and got married and it lasted only days. His step father adopted him hence the name Gingrich.

Wow, does Pat Robertson know his back story? Since he has forgiven him for his sins on national television, so all is good in the world...

Save your breadth Jackie. To those who watch and surmise from te outside, your dad's a morally and ethically challenged creep.

Nut Gingerhead: A typical radical right wing radical cracked teanut who follows in the footsteps of Herman (9Kampf) Cain.

Vote for Harold Camping, the evangelical king and savior. He could easily win Iowa, the home of the braindead Children of the Corn. He just has to promise them that he will ban abortion, have creationism taught in every school, then lead them up to heaven to see and stay with the man in the sky if they vote for him. They will live in the Jesus Hotel, which is right next to Allah's Hotel, where the Taliban suicide bombers live with their many virgins. Then they can fight it out, with the Taliban banging the Evangelicals over the head with their Korans and the Jesus freaks using bibles to fight back.

and common sense. (You'd be angry too if you thought anyone with a brain cell actually believed old man Newt Gingrich was the very best the country had to offer its future.)

AP - sadly many on the right do. What has become of the GOP? It used to be a decent party. Granted not one I wanted to belong to but they weren't totally out of touch like they are now. It's very sad for them and for the country. We need a strong two-party (or three) system but when one party becomes so disconnected from reality it is a shame.

I tried and tried and tried to make sense of Life2's rambling, incoherent post but I just couldn't. I think Life2 should go back on the antipsychotics and then repost.
